I chose to do NaNo not to reach 50k but to reach certain goals I decided to set for myself as a writer. Honestly I had no hope of reaching 50k I just wanted to finish the guide to promoting I was writing and I've almost done it. I also decided I wanted to finish a few shorts I was working, not so much there but the month isn't over. Basically I used NaNo as a kick in the pants.
Has anyone else made goals for themselves, other than reaching 50k?
Well, I set myself of a finishing a novel I had started, however many words that was. But it ended up being 62k to the end. So the answer to your question is yes, but also no?
Yes, I started out to write a whole book, but I was pretty sure it wouldn't reach 50k. My handwritten draft came out at about 22,500. It'll probably be a little higher when typed, because I didn't count every handwritten word, just used an average of words-per-page. Plus I'm adding little bits as I type. It won't come anywhere near 50, but I'm happy to be making my goal!
THANK YOU! This is my first year working full-time (gone at least 9-1/2 hrs from home most weekdays, working Saturdays, hanging out with Husband on Sun-Mon) and I am so physically tired that my "leisure" time doesn't allow for much writing. Yes, I SHOULD discipline myself, but I'm in that middle-aged-granny slump. Also there's been precious little uninterrupted time to learn to use the new computer (switched from years of Windows to Mac, plus LibreOffice, and can't even figure out how to configure my keyboard to do what it used to do, despite having a disc with Mac software on it). [insert rest of whining rampage here]
I tout NaNo so much, and ENJOY it so much, that I have decided almost from the get-go that I am not out to "win" -- but I need to participate. It gives something to me. And I want to encourage others, esp newbs and locals, but can't do that unless I myself am taking even a vague and sporadic stab at the novel from time to time.
My goal: add to word count, explore the characters, have a ball, let NaNo be my excuse for "me" time.
I guess I am the board wimp, huh? But I'm a happy wimp. :D
Hi! Me to. I knew that with 2 small kids (almost-4 and 14 months) and miscellaneous other commitments (mother-in-law visit, an article I was paid to write, birthday party for 4-year-old to plan and throw, husband roping me into his projects) there was no way I was going to get to 50 K this year. I'm writing up/drafting a story which I envision as a screenplay, and my goal is to complete the project or reach 25k, whichever comes first. I'm a few scenes away from the end!
