Re: Graphic Novel Rebels!

I started on a comic story during NaNo 2009 (I never do a script first though, I just start drawing and see where I'll end)
Took me till October 2010 to finish it (141 pages) so during NaNo 2010 I started editing the drawings (I just draw directly in ink, so some drawing need to be straightened a bit and so does A LOT of the text) and inking them (that's fun but also harder than I thought!)

This took waaaay more time than drawing did, but I still managed to do over 90 pages. I still have 50 left though, so I'll try and finish those this NaNo.

Count me in! I've been doing NaNo for seven or eight years, and I've always finished within a week. I don't find the 50,000 words even remotely challenging, and I eventually got bored of going for 200k or any other amount. I absolutely love drawing, so my goal is going to be 50 pages (planning, sketching, and polishing) in 30 days.

Even though I have a graphic novel and a short story comic (and several more ideas I'd like to work on) I'm still writing a novel this year. The graphic novel, I really want to have the first volume finished by the end of December, so I'll prolly be doing some work on that in November... somehow... Anyway, good luck to all of you. I'll be cheering you on, and if anyone wants to be writing buddies/friends, I would love to have some fellow graphic novel writers as amigos~

Er, I'm writing a graphic novel script. Was going to do it in prose, but my artist worries that it won't be visual enough that way (and she's probably right).
Who knows, maybe it'll dither back and forth between script and prose! &lt; -- incredibly likely. Prose is my weakness. Don't know bout no pages or word counts, but I'm going to try to get as much of the story down as I can. :)

*rises out of the lurk* I'm writing the script and bible for a (hopefully) ongoing webcomic. I don't have a set page count, but I have at least 3 pre-planned story arcs (maybe more) to play around in, so with any luck that will get to 50k. I am REALLY hoping for the 50k, but want those arcs completely scripted/thumbs as a minimum.

Best of luck to you! I hope the story arcs do get you above and beyond 50k, and/or you develop more ideas during the writing process to get you there. I was practice-writing some scenes... it's tricky to get pages to add up to a significant word count (for me, at least).
But with 3 story arcs, you've got a good base, definitely, so good luck!

No script for me. I may end up with a mix of written pages and drawn pages with graduated stick figures in them (I'm using marble notebooks, so there's no room otherwise).

In previous years I've written about 100k of autobiography (using yWriter4.) This year I'm ink-drawing and plan to draw some jobs/people/places from memory, but I'll be applying writing techniques like timed 'sprints' etc, so I have no idea how many pages to aim at yet or quite what will come out. I'm hoping my subconscious will wake up and play.

Drawing under time pressure will force me to keep the pen moving, and that's all I want to do.

Re: Graphic Novel Rebels!

I'm up in the air whether or not I want my young adult story to be a graphic novel or a traditional novel, and it's good to see other graphic novel folks right here. Initially I planned my story to be a comic, but I've been so tempted as NaNo draws close to scrap my plans to write the script and do basic storyboard, in favour of doing a more typical novel. I'm in a bit of a writing mood, and I feel like I'd probably get more readers with a traditional story. Hum.

I'm still sort of bouncing around on the idea.

I'm an artist but I haven't been drawing or very productive with my projects, which is another thing that makes me think I should do a comic. I've done some basic sketches of her bedroom and the characters, so I have something to WORK with to begin.

Any thoughts on the subject?

Re: Graphic Novel Rebels!

Alas, I'm merely novelizing the manga idea I've been working on since 1992. However, I'm writing it as if it <em>were</em> a graphic novel (of telephone-book size, actually), all the better to adapt it back into what it should have been in the first place. It's because I like to play around with words the same way I do my layouts. My base style is a hybrid of Masamune Shirow, Hayao Miyazaki, CLAMP, and Neal Adams, but lately I've been changing the way I do layouts under the influence of <em>Raw</em> and Chris Ware, and my prose style has similarly mutated. But then, I'm really less a novelist or cartoonist than a multimedia artist...

The easy way to cheat would be the Marvel-type script in which one paragraph represents a page of comics, possibly with dialogue added, then going back and fleshing it out (my full scripts can get pretty detailed) or just adding filler to pad the word count. Anyway, I always write the script before I do layouts, or at the same time. Just as I edit my novels until I get them right, I draw only when I feel the script and layouts are right. So I guess I wouldn't be rebelling anyway...

Yep, I'm writing some comic books in an attempt to get past the incubation stage of a bunch of stories. Although I've done the traditional NaNo (twice) and won (once), in the past year I've switched my focus to telling stories through comics. This last year has been mostly spent on recovering my drawing skills and therefore my poor stories have been languishing in the form of notes and supporting documents. I'm going for 100 pages per the Script Frenzy rules.

I've no idea yet if any artwork will enter into my scripts. I could see it happening though, since I seem to think naturally create stories in this sort of free-flow amalgam of both words and pictures.

I have a macabre urban fantasy movie script that I'll be reworking into a set of graphic novels. My goal is to modify the story arc to harmonize with the new media and iron out the page layouts by the end of the month. I'll also do some concept work on the leads and the environments so that I'm ready to draw the final sketches after November.

I'll be doing a fair bit of illustrating, but I won't be pushing for any finished designs this month.

Wow, you are all so impressive to me! This is the first year I've ever tried writing a graphic novel for Nano (oh, and the first time I've ever actually written a graphic novel!). I've always been more of a novel-kid, but I think the story I have for this month fits much better in a graphic novel format.

So, I'm going for it. I don't have a page count, but I have a pretty clear sense of where I want the story to go from beginning to end. For this month, I think I'm going to try to script the first two books? I really don't know. I guess I have to see how far I get.

How do you all do your word count? So glad this forum post exists! I could use some graphic novel advice!

I was planing writing the script and designing the layout for 2 pages a day. That's 60 pages by the end of the month, enough for two books. A page count seems much more useful than a word count in this case

Woh! I'm thrilled to see other people attempting this! My focus isn't going to be my graphic novel (though I plan to do some illos for it during this month) but instead to do all of the illustrations for the children's books I'd written over the years and never illustrated. My goal is 50 illustrations.

I've been involved in NaNo for years now and never gotten up to the word count goal... perhaps by adjusting my perspective to illustration I will make more progress.

I'm not quite in the same situation as you, as my script is written.

Last year, I decided to equate 1 page of artwork to about 750 words. This year, I might be a little less ambitious, and let each page of artwork = 1000 words. That's 1.67 pages of finished art per day. Difficult but doable. :)

Re: Graphic Novel Rebels!

You can certainly do it that way.

An average comic book (the short ones with the staples) are generally 22 pages + ads, roughly 30 pages in all.

But a graphic novel can be anything you want, including varying chapter lengths. My published graphic novel has chapters that are between 29 and 45 pages long.

If you are writing a comic for monthly publication, though, you will have more stringent page limits. Hope that helps! :)

I did the rough version (but in black on white ink already) of my comic story in 2009 and posted it on my blog: <a href="http://hannahsnano.blogspot.com/" rel="nofollow">http://hannahsnano.blogspot.com/</a>
You have to go back to November 4th 2009 to read it from the beginning. I did 60+ pages in November that year, but took me almost a full year to complete it (at 141 pages) and I need(ed) both last years AND this NaNo to edit the drawings (and the text mostly) and ink them in full colour.

Last year I also posted to examples of the edited and inked drawings (and in between I posted other comics I did.)

Re: Graphic Novel Rebels!

So how is everyone doing with their scripting goals?

There seems to be a lot of us first timer's here and I was wondering: what pleasant and unpleasant discoveries you've made?

I'm back on target!! with my self-imposed 100 page goal after having a melt-down, procrastination day yesterday in which I wrote absolutely nothing. (Yay, me! I was feeling so discouraged yesterday.)

I've been pleasantly surprised to find out that I was right; this IS my ideal medium. For the first time since I began to seriously try to write stories three years ago, I feel like I'm really breathing. Also, I've been pleasantly surprised by my characters so far. I did no character sheets before hand, although I did have some basic (really basic) drawings, and they are just coming to life and taking on voices and actions and it's just so exciting! Noveling was <em>never</em> this much fun. :D

I've been, well I don't know if it's really <em> unpleasant </em> or not, but I've definitely been surprised to discover how many comic pages it's going to take to tell this story. All my previous comics were sort of annotated thumbnail scripts (and shorter), but this one is turning out to just be all text. I'm sure when I actually panel it out and do the rewrite, it will tighten up a little, but still I'm really surprised. I can't even begin to guess at a final comic page count.

Since I'm retelling a classic folktale, I copied the folktale and then broke it up into numbered "plot points" and then basically made a point to point correlation outline. I guess I should have known something was up when "The Bremen Town Musicians" broke up into 74 points. Obviously I'll have quite a bit of condensing to do. That's not such a bad problem to have though.

Re: Graphic Novel Rebels!

I'm pretty sure things are going to get harder. I have 10 pages scripted for issue one, with some more to break into pages and panels, and seven pages for issue two. I'm pretty consistently doing six panels per page. I'm not sure how I feel about doing a basic grid. It makes it easier to plan, that's for sure, but is it boring? I'm probably over-thinking it.

Hoping to finish issue one tomorrow. I'm mostly to the boring bits, but if I get issue one done, I get to write about ferrets robbing banks. With a little tiny scissor lift so they can reach and move things.

Trying to decide if I'm going to start planning layouts. On the one hand, as I plan poses and such I can add to the script. On the other hand, I want to keep moving forward. I guess I'll decide how I feel.

I wouldn't worry about making your paneling "interesting." FWIW, I think the most important thing is the story and you should do what ever best supports the story you want to tell. I've been working my way through <a href rel="nofollow">"Panel Discussions"</a> (Good book!) and thought that Mike Mignola's thoughts behind why he likes the grid and what they do for storytelling were great. He talked about how he tries to take away anything that takes the reader out of the story.

That said... I have no idea if <em>I'm</em> using a grid. ~_^

Seeing as I'm trying to be an illustrator, I don't even know why or how I did not think of this. Always next year! You guys are ballsy to be writing a 50k word graphic novel script. Good luck all! Also, if any of you are artists/illustrators, I'd love to see your work.

I'm about half-way through my second book. I've noticed that as I got along, I'm not as concerened with things like layout and details and have also focused more on just telling the story. I'll probably go back later and have more specifics, but I really just want to finish that story for now. I'm shooting for about a book a week at this point. Won't have the time I had earlier in the month to quickly crank out another book. Best of luck to all you guys!

Re: Graphic Novel Rebels!

I had been going to try to get the first 30(ish) pages of my graphic novel done. However, I realized about three pages into it that I don't have the word design or the script/story planned out nearly well enough to start drawing the actual pages yet (It's a political drama with quite a few plot twists, so planning is going to be pretty important). So instead I'm going to see if I can't get 50K words out of either writing it in script or novel format. Here goes!

How's everybody doing?

I have the page limit for issue one done, but it's still going. I'm inching closer to the climax. Two, maybe three more pages before that. What's amazing is that, even with doing it in script format, I'm only 2525 words short, and I haven't written anything today yet (about to go to lunch and see what I can get done in 20 minutes).

Want to get to issue two and the ferrets robbing banks!

I've been inspired by the work linked from this thread!

I'm now steering my generalised ink-drawing towards telling stories in frames. I know practically nothing about graphic novels but have ordered a few books to help:
"Expressive Anatomy for Comics and Narrative: Principles and Practices" Eisner, Will
"Alan Moore's Writing For Comics Volume 1"
"Making Comics: Storytelling Secrets of Comics, Manga and Graphic Novels" McCloud, Scott

Anyone got other recommendations? (I can draw reasonably and once published a couple of cartoons but don't have any graphic-novel style. I'd be aiming for a humorous take on daily life, not superheros or noir.)

Re: Graphic Novel Rebels!

Today, I found a section about James Kocholka (American Elf) inside Danny Gregory's 'An Illustrated Life' (collection of other people's artwork.) Some of the sections in Illustrated Life show beautiful, skilled, drawing-and-watercolour artwork, but these sections don't tell you anything about the people who live in this beautiful world.

By comparison James Kochalka's section appears to be simple almost 'goofy' black-and-white doodle-style comic strips, but it's alive. These little four-frame stories capture daily life in nuggets. I loved them and they've made me realise how much more powerful than beautiful paintings this kind of art is, at least if you want to tell 'people stories', which I do.

Finished issue two! It ended up with more gang stuff than I thought was going to happen, but it desperately needed more action so I tied something from the MC's backstory to the opening AND got a cameo from a character who isn't going to show up for a while out of it.

On to issue three, which will hopefully have more ferret action.

Gazoinks, thanks for that recommendation. I've put 'Making Comics' on my Xmas list. (I read 'Understanding Comics' a few years back and it was on my shelf until I loaned it to someone.) I didn't think I was interested in Noir but I'm also adding 'How to Draw Noir Comics' for tips on that dramatic lighting style.

Poppy H, as for how it's going:
&gt; I'm pleased to have found a better direction
&gt;I've abandon working directly in ink. (Fine for a drawing a real scene, but for rough ideas I'm enjoying pencil work.)
&gt;There are a lot of ideas to sift out.

Your 'Man Alive' story seems to be going very well. Is it all mapped out to the end?

Like 'outliners' and 'pants-ers' in writing, I'm curious to know if you guys mostly start drawing and see where an idea goes, or sketch out the whole story first?

Cheers watercolour! Yeah Man Alive is coming along slowly, I've got it basicly mapped out until the end. What you see on the blog is my horrificly rough first draft for each graphic novel page. I tend to write things up a couple of times and then it takes me a few goes to get a good looking page so at the moment you're seeing a bit of a mess.
I've had a look at your blog Watercolour, your artworks looking fantastic, really like your style!

I'm thinking that canberra boy redux!! It looks like I'm going to keep going after NaNowrimo has ended!

I actually wrote the scripts for TWO graphic novels (actually one is a webcomic/graphic novel) for NaNo this year - unfortunately they only got me to 45k so I have to fill up the rest of my wordcount with short stories. XD
It's a great thing, though, because I had already started the artwork for both of them (with a few pages written beforehand) and I really needed to get the scripts done - NaNoWriMo was the perfect motivational opportunity for that. XD

Yay for graphic novels!
