OLL chose to call this section Outside the Box & this forum NaNo Rebels for very good reasons. It's for people all over the world who would like to join with other crazy/wonderful/terrifying writers to write 50K in the 30 days of November--but who will be doing it on their own terms. Marching to the beat of a different drummer. Having it their way.
We did NOT call it The Cheaters Corner, or The Fraud Forum, or the Wannabe Hangout, or... well, we could go on, but, again, you get the picture, right?
The good reason? First of all, we wanted to make this an inclusive event--but we chose the words we used because words are powerful. Using words with provocative, inflammatory connotations is negative. Please keep this in mind & respect the spirit of NaNoWriMo & the folks who use this forum when posting to this forum.
Hi! I'm coming into Nanowrimo this November as a rebel- adding to my already partially written novel, hoping to take the plot to the finish line by the end of the 30 days. I'm not expect any great language out of this, just the story and it's twists all the way to the end. I'll be traveling to China and Chicago (based in LA) during the month so I'll be looking to this thread for strength and inspiration. Good luck everybody- Crazy or not, here we come! Xx Phizlair
Have fun in China! I'll be waving from below in Japan as you fly over. I'm going 'legit' this year, but next year will be split between studio time and writing. Cheers to rebellion!
I'm less than 2,000 words into my novel but wanted to hit it HARD in November...but felt like I'd be "cheating" if I did NaNoWriMo. I'm so excited that I'm not a cheater, but a REBEL...and can participate this year. YAY! Thanks so much for starting this thread and being so inclusive. :o)
Hi Heather. If you are starting your a non-fiction work and have no words but are following the nano rules and produce 50,000 words at the end, does this still qualify for a nanowrimo winner certificate at the end ? Thanks

The thread for asking if you're a rebel is right over here. This thread is just for introductions and rebellious declarations!
Well, when I came in, I have a very small word count, a few chapters, that I had started a week ago. This is the first time that I have attempted to write anything of this length that isn't erotica, wanting to break out of the box that people have put me in. So, I am glad that I can take the challenge as a Rebel, I only started the novel recently, I just need some support while I attempt to break or hopefully surpass the 50k mark.
We're entering as rebels because we're a duo of writers! We're twins and we've always wanted to write together and see if we can get published in the future. We see no harm in writing together, it shouldn't be against the rules! Besides, only one person writes at a time! We just both come up with the ideas :P
Could have been worse we could have used our already about 45000 word novel!

My main project: a serial comic script (rebellion? It's script, not prose) set in the Green Lantern Corps continuity - because damnit, we need more female Lanterns, and once my brain entertained the idea of a woman from the Victorian Era being a Green Lantern, it couldn't let it go. Because come on, that is an idea that is so awesomely weird, it NEEDS writing.
At this highly optimistic point though I'm ALSO hoping to continue work on a novel I started during my last NaNo: the first in a comedy/paranormal romance series about the unexpected complexities of human/vampire dating. It's set in Queens. (Although, ugh, given what happened recently to NYC, I don't know how well I'm going to handle the idea of begging people for research on the city o.O Especially since it hit part of my location!). If I finish or get stuck on the GL story and feel too uncomfortable to research this one, I may switch to a YA fantasy series I've been working on for a while (set in the same universe, but with less vampire focus)... though because of the sort of "serialized" feel (it introduces a lot of characters, mostly one by one), I've been toying with the idea of converting it from a YA novel format to a YA graphic novel.
Either way, I'm going to be very much a Rebel this year. ;)
1) finish a project I started years ago and just sort of fell away from (life got in the way)
or, 2) start a new project that isn't really fiction, not quite biography, a little bit of "how to", and some good old spirituality thrown in for good measure.
I already chose, "2", but... what do you all think i should do?
I chose to take this NaNo to a) finish a few projects and b) generate a lot of material for new projects. So, I'm using last year's novella and making it way better, writing a few short stories and flash fiction, and doing a LOT of brainstorming. The goal, on top of reaching 50,000 total words, is to enter at least 5 writing contests by November 30!
My partner and I thought we were going to have to do this on our own because we're co-authoring our novel. ^_^ I'm so glad we can still be validated!! *does a little dance*
Turns out I'm a rebel. I'm wanting to finally begin my "active memoirs" as they say, based on my time as a hired Companion. I have no idea if I can fictionalize it "enough" to make it a valid NaMoWriMo submission, but I really wanted to try this site because of the people, not because of the competition!
I am definitely a Rebel. NaNo has been helping me to make the tranistion from Non- Fiction to Fiction Writing. I need a lot of practice.
Definitly makeing progress. I took last years work to a Finish your Novel Workship. lol. I still write like a historian. Gee imagine that.
Okay, I have been working with a mentor and writing group since January. I have learned a lot. Now I need to redo my whoule manuscript from last year. Some ideas stay, but the whole thing needs a rewrite.
I have worked over and over on the first 50 pages, now it is just time to write the rest. My family is used to me writing full-time in November, so I will use NaNo to do that and get a full draft, with real dialogue and scenes. lol
Yes, Rebel here. Starting count at where I begin November 1.
I'm a nonfiction writer through and through, but I have a new book idea to work on, and it just happens to be in time for NaNoWriMo, so I'm excited to be taking part for the first time. I'm super excited that there is a place here for those of us who are totally *writers* but are not necessarily writing novels in the traditional sense. Thanks!
I'm targeting 50K of short stories - however many stories that takes. Sci fi, fantasy, maybe even some lit fic. There's a file of prompts growing on my computer. Lots of song lyrics (one line per story is my plan) along with some character names and situations. It's going to be interesting. I hope to laugh a lot.

I was debating whether to do NaNo this year, but I decided to try for something like this instead. My brain's a little too scattered right now to focus on a novel-length story, and I tend to do a little better with short stories as it is. I'm at a loss for prompts, though. I'll just need to see what pops up.
I think I'm going to be a rebel this year - that is, if I find the time to write at all in my currently extremely busy life! :-(
I only got halfway through my NaNo11 novel, even though I reached & past the 50K mark, so that needs addressing. I reckon to have about another 15K to write on my June Camp novel, so I might start with that, first. And I've an idea to plan / develop / whatever for an off-shoot novel from the Camp one, which might mean that I can't actually finish the Camp one because both novels start & finish together. So I might work on planning that out, too. It's all fun! :-D
I'm definitely coming in as a rebel. I have over 7,000 words in the novel I'm working on and I will continue to write right up to November. I will then work for the 50,000. It's one hell of a motivator.
I've started my novel early and hit a "wall" and plan to have NaNoWriMo help me pick up the pace. I have barely 8500 right now but I plan to be at a fresh 10,000 by the time Nov.1 rolls around so I can keep track of the word count I add on, easier. First time being a rebel but I'm too hooked on my current project to tackle anything new. So wish me luck. And of course everyone else, good luck as well! :) This isn't my first attempt at NaNoWriMo but I hope it'll be much more successful this go around.
I'm continuing a novel I've been attempting to write for years. I'm at 17,400 words and not sure I'll ever complete it. I tried to rebel and finish at Camp Nanowrimo, but only did a few thousand words.
Hello, My name is Cody, and I am a rebel and sooo not ashamed of it. This year I am going to finish the NaNo I was writing last year, (And had already started several years before that) which is a Harry Potter Fanfiction. I hit 50,000 last year, and this year I am doing everything I can to finish this story. And No I am not waiting until November to start, I am so desperate to finish this thing I've been up at 3 AM if an idea wanted written, however all new words are being posted in a separate folder I still plan on validating because I am a rebel and I am not ashamed!
Hi, I'm Chris. I'm a non-fiction writer. I chose NaNo with my friends for the accountability. I simply don't have an ounce of fiction in me and I'm okay with that.
ChrisJones wrote: Hi, I'm Chris. I'm a non-fiction writer. I chose NaNo with my friends for the accountability. I simply don't have an ounce of fiction in me and I'm okay with that.
Hi Chris! I'm in the same boat.
The book I'm writing has been floating in my head for a couple of years now. It's screaming to come out of my head and onto paper. I am challenging myself through NaNo so I don't give up, get bored, or find any other reason to quit.
Ok, I hate to say this but I don't have the time this month not to rebel :/ (I have a ton of stuff going on that needs my time. So to still work on story writing this year I'm rewriting an old draft and plan on finishing it in November even though I've ; already worked on it some already. :) I couldn't help myself it's been so long and now I know how I really want it to go.. But I'm not rewriting it word for word so if I win I think I'll count it thank you very much. :0
Thanks for the validation that I can write non-fiction, non-novel, and still be a NaNoWriMo participant. I'm cool with being a Rebel. That really works for me, at least for my first experience.
I'm so excited to have signed on, but I've been struggling with the stories within me because they're not novel material. I've read (and loved!) Emma, Pride and Prejudice, Wuthering Heights, and Jane Eyre, and cannot see myself even remotely (or poorly) being in that league. I do journals and reflections but would still enjoy the 50K challenge and to be among fellow bards.
Best wishes to everyone as you share the stories within you, fiction or non!
Well, I'm a rebel then. It's half term soon in the UK, and for the first 4 days of November - no way can I reach the word count if I lose those days...so, I've started already. I'm doing 4 days writing now, and then I'll put those word counts up when the children go back to school.

I'm in much the same boat. due to the work load I'm going to have over the next month I'm doing some of the writing now for the days i won't be able to write next month. so I get the same 30 days to work on it just not back to back thus I won't be technically cheeting just not playing by the rules lol. so I guess you can say I'm a rebel with good intentions (well I alway did like anti-heros lol)
How wonderful to find this forum and all of you Rebels! I'm Cynthia and I had no idea it was quite so OK to be a Rebel. I was considering being a Cheater. But this is much better, all around.
I 'won' NaNoWriMo in November 2010 with the first 5OK of a historical novel set in the Crimean War. I figured I'd whip out the rest of it and have it done by Spring 2011. Wrong. We moved to Malaysia instead (from the UK) but that's really just an excuse. I had no idea whatsoever how involved it would get or how many threads I'd be attempting to hold together.
In November 2011 I made a stap at NaNo, living in Malaysia, and wrote the first 12,500 words of a murder mystery--sort of a challenge from a friend--set in Malaysia. After that, I went back to the Crimean War thing.
And then everyone we know in the US and UK and Australia decided they needed a holiday in Malaysia. So we've had nonstop family and friends visiting, some people twice. Needless to say, that provided ample excuses not to finish the book. Reality set in. I'd plug away, put it away, forget what I'd done, get it out...and so on.
Fast forward to now and it's up to 110K words and I have been so scattered and unfocused on it that I feel it's a mess. It probably has another 40-50Kwords to go to complete the first draft, less what other junk I take out of it, so the NaNo month seemed like a good time to do it, support and deadlines and daily discipline and all.
And here I am, overjoyed to be a rebel. I do have the time and I plan to let NaNoWriMo help me maintain the focus.
I'm so glad to find a group of fellow Rebels. I'm a complete nonfiction writer, and couldn't do fiction if my life depended on it. I'm using NaNo for accountability on a new book I'm about to start. I'll be awake Halloween night with the rest of you, waiting to put my first words in my book after midnight.
First time rebel here! I started my novel back in June, but it came from a plot idea I've had for a couple of years. I thought that I'd finish since I had nothing else to do all summer. I was wrong. I only hit 26k.
My NaNo novel is a fanfiction (I'm so ashamed), but the characters and settings have changed so much in my mind that it wouldn't take much to turn it into an original story. My mom would hate me if I did that, though.
So now I'm hoping to finish my novel at last, and figure out how exactly any of it makes sense. Science got in the way if my worldbuilding as well, so there's that...

I am working on the 2nd half of what I started last year.
All the best to everyone,

Woot! Viva la Rebellion!!

Cheating, I suppose, would be writing the same word fifty times, hitting select-all, then copy, and then paste until you have 50,000 words.
Happened in one of my novels, actually.
But then, what would be the point? It's not like we're even competing for a chocolate eclair on this site.
I'm starting at 7K. I couldn't wait. I'm a rebel.
