Am I a Rebel? Find out here!

<strong>Am I a rebel?</strong>

We get this question here a lot. The odds are not; there are some rules that people think are rules, but really aren't! So we're going to touch on the most commonly asked ones. The first rule of NaNoWriMo: If you think it's a novel, so do we. Some people like to know if they are or are not rebellious, though, so we'll let you know if you ask. If you'd like to know if something's against the rules or not, ask in the <a href="http://www.nanowrimo.org/forum/160" rel="nofollow">Rules and Regs</a> forum.

Here are the basic rules for winning, as outlined on the <a href="http://www.nanowrimo.org/hownanoworks" rel="nofollow">How NaNoWriMo Works</a> page.

    * Write a 50,000-word (or longer!) novel, between November 1 and November 30.
    * Start from scratch. None of your own previously written prose can be included in your NaNoWriMo draft (though outlines, character sketches, and research are all fine, as are citations from other people's works).
    * Write a novel. We define a novel as a lengthy work of fiction. If you consider the book you're writing a novel, we consider it a novel too!
    * Be the sole author of your novel. Apart from those citations mentioned two bullet-points up.
    * Write more than one word repeated 50,000 times.
    * Upload your novel for word-count validation to our site between November 25 and November 30.

<em><strong>What does being a rebel mean? Does this mean I can't validate, or use the site, or participate in NaNoWriMo?</strong></em>

Absolutely NOT! You are 100% welcome. In fact, you're so welcome we gave you this very shiny forum, where people won't accuse you of being a cheater or "not doing it right." Some rebels validate, others don't. We don't check, and we don't care! Some people feel that if they're not doing it by the book, they shouldn't validate. Those people will still get shiny green bars of completion once they hit 50k. Others feel they worked hard, and should get their purple winner's bar and winner's certificate.

<strong>Neither is wrong!</strong> This is a self-challenge. The REAL prize of NaNoWriMo is the accomplishment, and the big new manuscript you have at the end. Everything beyond that is icing on the cake.

<strong><em>I won't be writing crap. I'll probably be editing while I write. Am I a rebel?</em></strong>

Nope. Writing crap is allowed... not required. Chris Baty asks you to give yourself permission to write crap... but you aren't required to write crap to win. Some of us even manage to churn out pretty decent drafts! Those of you who edit... you're not rebelling either. Editing is discouraged, but not forbidden, and only because when you edit, you slow yourself down and may end up bogged down in worrying about whether or not it is perfect. Plenty of people edit, win, and validate!

<strong><em>I'm writing fanfiction. Am I a rebel?</em> </strong>

Not even a little. The only rule we have for content is that it must be fiction. Beyond that...

<strong><em>I'm writing a collection of short stories. Am I a rebel?</em></strong>

Probably not. There's no actual rule on this one. We define a novel as "a lengthy work of fiction." However, we the moderators feel that since you find short story collections on the shelves alongside longer works of fiction, if they're related, they count. They need to have some common theme, or linking thread that weaves them together that makes them a single, "lengthy work of fiction." Which leads us to the next:

<strong><em>I'm writing a series of unrelated essays/short stories/vignettes. Am I a rebel?</em></strong>

Probably. Again, there's no official rule on this one, but if you're just combining unrelated work to get the 50k, it's probably not a novel.

<strong><em>I'm writing a memoir/biography/guide to Europe/creative non-fiction. Am I a rebel?</em></strong>

Yes. Nonfiction is outside the bounds of the NaNoWriMo challenge. If it's not fiction, then it doesn't fall within the confines of "a lengthy work of fiction." The exception to this is fictionalized memoir; we don't tell you how MUCH fiction you must include. It's up to you to decide. Fictionalized memoirs are okay, true, non-fiction memoirs are rebellion.

<strong><em>I'm continuing last year's NaNo, or another work I've been writing on before November. am I a rebel?</em></strong>

Yes. You have to start from scratch... scratch doesn't mean with nothing (you can plan), but it does mean that you can't start writing before November 1. To win officially, you need to write your novel, or at least the first 50k of it, between November 1 and November 30.

<strong><em>I started this idea, but it never got far. I won't be using the stuff I wrote, but it's the same idea and characters. Am I a rebel?</em></strong>

No. Ideas are fine! When you make biscuits from scratch, you sometimes use a recipe, and you don't make the flour and water out of nothing! As long as you set anything you've written aside, don't refer to it, and don't include any of the original prose... it's fine.

<strong><em>What if I don't finish my novel at 50k? Am I a rebel?</em></strong>

No. 50k is a threshold... <a href="http://www.nanowrimo.org/50klinkFAQ" rel="nofollow">not a limit</a>. If you're a vet, you may remember when Chris encouraged you to hit "The End" on November 30, but that's not even recommended anymore. It's a great goal, but if you don't finish, you're not a loser. The goal is to write at least 50k.

<strong><em>I'm writing a script. Am I a rebel?</em></strong>

Yes. BUT, if you wait until April, you can join The Office of Letters and Light's <em>other</em> challenge, <a href="http://www.scriptfrenzy.org" rel="nofollow">Script Frenzy</a> and write a 100 page script in 30 days.

<strong><em>I'm writing a video game/drawing a graphic novel/poetry/music. Am I a rebel?</em></strong>

Yes. while these are incredible art forms in and of themselves, we focus on novels. Graphic novels are novels, but we don't have a way to validate them... it has to be text.

<strong><em>I'm writing my novel in journal form/as a fictional guide/in verse/insert other strange form here. Am I a rebel?</em></strong>

Is it fiction? Then no! We don't care what the format's like. If it's a lengthy work of fiction, we don't even care if you write it on stone tablets in unrhymed verse... it still counts.

<strong><em>I don't have a computer, and I'm handwriting my novel. Am I a rebel?</em></strong>

No. In fact, we even have a special clause for you handcrampers out there to validate. Check it out <a href="http://www.nanowrimo.org/en/faq/word-count#writebyhand" rel="nofollow">the Luddite Clause</a>.

Obviously, this is not an exhaustive list, because you guys always come up with something to surprise us. But feel free to ask your "am I a rebel" questions in this thread. We'll try to answer!

I'm planning on writing two separate 50,000 (or more)-word novels, both in November. They're perfectly 'normal' novels otherwise, I'm just writing two of them simultaneously. Am I a rebel?
(Also, the title of this thread is missing the word 'a.' Don't know if that's fixable; just thought I'd point it out...)

Re: Am I a Rebel? Find out here!

Fixed the title.

And it depends miss_technicality - if what you mean is that you're writing two novels but both of them will be 50k individually, then no you're not a rebel.

But you -would- be a rebel if you're planning to write 50k combined between the two novels and they're not related.

In other words.. a collection of short stories which are related or have a common theme - as listed above.. aren't considered rebel work because they have a common theme.

However, from what I can tell you're not write short stories - you're writing two legitimate 50k novels - which will total 100k by the end of the month. If this is the case then no, you're not a rebel :)

Hopefully that made sense (.. dragonchilde feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about this XD)

Re: Am I a Rebel? Find out here!

I think I'm rebelling.

I started a novel over the summer and have put it aside until I can squeeze out time to work on it. I've got, oh, 9K words written on this thing, and I need the Kick in the Pants and/or The Excuse to Tell My Family to Get Out and Leave Me Alone, I'm NaNo-ing. Do your own laundry, people. Cereal in the pantry.

My plan is to build on what I've already done, but NOT to include anything I've already written in my word counts. It's locked up in my desk, and I ain't touchin' it until December. No edits, no checking the work for continuity, nothin'. (Okay, fine, it's really on a jump drive, not locked up. My teenage daughter would probably lock it up for me, and laugh in my face if in a fit of insanity I begged her to retrieve it.)

It doesn't really matter to me if I'm rebelling or not - I'm going through with the plan. But I like things defined. It's fiction, it's a novel, it'll be 50K words written by me and no one else in November, Lord willin' an' the crick don't rise. It'll just tack on to previously written stuff.

Whaddya think? Rebel or no?

Re: Am I a Rebel? Find out here!

So, I have this idea for my contribution to this year's NaNoWriMo. Basically, I'm going to write something in the style of James Joyce's -Finnegan's Wake-, which essentially amounts to writing something very surreal and borderline stream-of-consciousness. Now, I'm wondering if that is really rebellious of me to do so, since I feel that not only am I abandoning plot, I'm also going to abandon normal cohesion, instead opting to cram in as much symbolism, puns, and other types of literary devices I possibly can into the space of the "novel".

So, is my idea a rebellion or not?

Mals86 - Welcome to the Rebel fold! You're definitely a rebel as, even though you won't count the words you wrote earlier in your 50k total, they say you have to start from scratch.

Joseph Staleknight - Nano defines "Novel" as a "Lengthy work of fiction" -regardless of whether it's plot, stream of consciousness or what have you - as long as you think you're writing a novel.. we do too! - You're probably not a rebel.

73LadyB - Fictionalized Memoirs (i.e. a memoir combining true events + original fiction) is perfectly legit and not cause for rebel status.

One of the problems with ADHD is forgetfulness. It causes a certain lack of follow through. Sometimes I think it takes me a thousand beginnings to stumble my way to one conclusion. So I figured, why not just accept that. Why not schedule the time to sit and make enough beginnings to reach a conclusion. Hey, It might work.

I'm going to be starting out with autobiographical vignettes, but I expect to slide into non-fiction and fiction, just because I have so many collected cool facts and unfinished stories cluttering up my computer. I'm calling my genre Navel Gazing and Found Writing. The "novel" is A Thousand Beginnings. A plot may emerge. Or an ending. You never know.

If I get very self-indulgent, I may write entries to three blogs that I've been thinking of forever. Or I may just talk about them in a loose and rambling way. The blogs are: Science With Shit, Geek Vacations, and Fossils Without Dinosaurs. Fear my titles.

I've never attempted Nano before, but I'm definitely a rebel. I've been working on my opus, off and on, since 1995. I'm finally on a roll with it again, and don't want to write anything else right now. I'm not sure I need 50K to finish, but at least I'll write until it feels finished. So, how many pages are we talking about? Does anyone know?

I want to write a novel, but I'm not exactly sure if it's right to do.
I plan to write about my entire life so far, with my softball. I've been playing softball since I was little and have some great achievements. I want to write about what it took to get those. This is my first year of NaNoWriMo though, and I want to make sure I do it right.
Would I be a rebel if I wrote about my softball career, sticking to the facts of my life...?

I wrote a few poems over the past year under a collective title, "The Medication Chronicles." However, I haven't written any short stories or any lengthy prose under that title (yet). I am however using my poems as inspiration and using "The Medication Chronicles" as my NaNo title. No idea if I'll eventually include the poems as chapter headers or anything, but the plan as of right now is no. Am I a rebel? XD

I know I'm a rebel this year. I'm planning on writing a training manual for flyball, a dog sport I participate in. No new training manuals have come out in a long time, despite great changes in the sport, equipment, and training methods, and if no one else will do it, I will. But, I want to participate in NaNo without putting off writing this. Not technically fiction, so not technically a novel, but it will be a complete book draft of at least 50,000 words by the end of November, so its close enough for me :)

I've participated in NaNoWriMo twice before, but didn't complete my (actual) novels either time, because of running out of steam. I know I won't run out of steam on this project, and would like to get that official completion at the end of the month. Am I allowed to Validate my book at the end of the month?

Hi loracarol,

If it's a sequel (i.e., separate novel with its own cover), then you're not a rebel. If it's a continuation (not separate, in the same cover), then you are a rebel.

Hi The Love Mutt,

If you're not using previous prose, you're not a rebel. Recycling titles is fine.

Hi Destyrenee,

Yes, you'd be considered a rebel since you're writing a non-fictional memoir. Here's your rebel flag :)

Am I a rebel? I'm going to be writing something that definitely qualifies as a lengthy work of fiction...but it is certainly not something that I would ever, ever call a novel. What I am going to write is a reference grammar of the language I have constructed as a hobby; basically, pulling together my disparate notes and compiling the information contained therein in a coherent format. So it'll be lengthy, and it'll be a work of fiction since the language is entirely made-up, but it's really not anything like what I would include in the group of things I call novels.

I know I'm a rebel. I've got more than 20K written--it was originally a novella--but I need to expand the story by 30 to 50K and do some extensive rewriting. I know that I'm not going to be able to keep up with the people who write about 5K a day; I just want the impetus to finish the work on the book. I even know that I may not finish by December--that's okay with me as long as I get myself going and am continuing work on it.

The main thing that I'm worried about is getting stressed out over NaNo and quitting. I really, REALLY don't want to do that. For that reason, I probably won't be posting much about the book until it's done. I don't want to get all kinds of encouragement and then find that, due to time pressures or illness (my two betes noire), I can't finish.

I just posted my question about writing a draft that is very, very different from the 1st draft, but I guess it's not posted here yet.
I just wanted to also say that I am not really concerned about getting validated.
I also have a concern about posting my entire ms (or the 50K words that I finish). I don't want my writing out there for the thousands or so NaNo writers to be able to read. I mean taking someone to court for stealing your writing is costly and could take years. I tried to find the proper place to bring up this question. I have seen people steal other people's writing many times. It is not uncommon and I can't believe no one has addressed this issue here.
I even had a classmate who plagiarized our professor. How stupid can you be thinking he won't recognize his only words.
Am I totally confused about how this is done? I looked through the site, but don't see anything addressing this issue.

You can completely re-write something from word 1 without using or looking at or referring to your previously written text, without being a rebel.

Your novel is never posted anywhere where anyone can see it. No one ever sees it. It goes into the word count validator, which is nothing more than a bit of software which counts the spaces between the words and then immediately deletes it. **this means be sure to keep your novel on your computer or online place where you actually wrote it.

I'm writing a poetry anthology, since I can't write a novel this year (long story), but I'd still like to include it somewhere in my word count that I'm not just bumming around the forums. Sould I just give each poem the arbitrary value of 1,667 words, to keep track? Should I count each poem as a word so that you can tell have 30 at the end? Should I/should I not validate? I'm rather lost here.

http://quotesnack.com is my site. I publish credited excerpts, often following up with my own input. I'm thinking of using NaNoWriMo to push myself towards writing a series of essays that I may eventually package together as a book.

I'd be happy if I ended up with a personal-use-only "today in quotesnack" almanac that I can scribble in. I'd be happy and satisfied if I also end up with the draft of a book for public consumption.

Is there anything I do that can be NaNoWriMo legal? If so, where does the word count begin and end?

.........................

Sometimes QuoteSnack posts are as short as this:
http://quotesnack.com/oscar-wilde/who-being-loved-is-poor/

These are my own observations and poems:
http://quotesnack.com/elizabeth-able/

Sometimes they're more personal:

http://quotesnack.com/c-s-lewis/if-you-are-on-the-wrong-road-progress-means-doing-an-about-turn-and-walking-back-to-the-right-road/

Sometimes they're primarily observations about the author of an excerpt:

is any of it a lengthy work of fiction or shorter-but-related works of fiction? then it counts.

anything non-fiction -- including personal essays and literary criticism -- makes you a rebel.

it's okay to use quotes and stuff from other people as they are relevant to your novel, but just using quotes and exerpts by themselves probably wouldn't qualify.

I'm writing a memoir (somewhat) that's going to be fictionalized but...I'm think of fictionalizing it in Harry Potter/Alex Rider/Gallagher Girls/whatever I can fit in. Which basically means it's a Memoir Fanfiction Crossover.

So that basically means I write the memoir but say I turn my school into hogwarts and all the characters into students, and then add more people for different fandoms into it...

So...I noticed it didn't say anything about Crossovers (which if you don't know is when you cross two or more different fandoms together)...

Sorry if this sounds a bit stupid but I want to be sure. ^-^"

Forgive me great deities of NaNoWriMo, but I just have one more question...What in the world is a fictional guide?

Thank you.

I could rewrite a book I started but I am more interested in writing a semi-fictiionalized story about my personal experience having learned I had a strange "thing in my head" which no one else in the world except some woman in Germany also has. The story is pretty odd and funny although more than anything--I think I might call it something like Help. I Might Be a Zombie I also have an idea based on my funny quest for finding a mate at my age which would be based on a series of Facebook status entries from my date match fiascos. Are either of those two non-fiction? Should I stick with the mystery novel?

I'm writing fanfiction, but since I have so many different ideas I'm just gonna get 50k combined for my goal to win. I'd rather have a lot of different stuff written instead of 50,000 words of one story, since most of them won't get over 50,000 anyway. Oh, and they're all unconnected. :p Rebel time!

She has some pretty famous parents (both died, in 1968 en 2004). For now I am investigating the parts of the parents, how they met, the childhood of my MC etc etc. I am also collecting proof she exists. Most part of the book is a fact.

Are any of your ideas going to end up as completed stories/novels? Because it kind of sounds like you're planning to write 50,000 words worth of partial stories? You might want to consider putting your NaNo effort into finishing just one or two things (regardless of length or whether they're related or not) instead of writing a lot of half-finished stories. Finishing a novel takes practice, and NaNo is perfect for making yourself do that.

I kept a few scenes in mind that were going to appear in the new version, but I wrote them from scratch, straight from my head, instead of copying or using the old text. If you rewrite from the beginning and don't copy or refer to your previous version at all, it counts for NaNo.

Does it count as continuing last year's novel if you're completely rewriting it? I may end up using the odd line here and there but the majority will be rewritten and plot-tweaked, and I plan to keep track of how many words I reuse so that I can make sure I write at least 50k more than that.
That's more editing than writing from scratch. I'm fairly sure that's rebellion.

Yes, that's rebellion. You're not writing from scratch, you're rewriting in a different language.

That does not sound as rebellion to me, as having ideas etc from before, writing fanfic, etc. are all prefectly within the rules for Nano. Using characters from mythology is perfectly OK also, as it is not the word-by-word story, but the characters. People rewrite fairytales etc, and that is perfectly along the rules.

The only thing that might be rebellion is the fact that you are doing several short stories. But as long as there is a connecting thing, not even that.

(I have been playing with the tought of retelling Sumerian legends - not this year, though, that needs research, i.e. hunting the legends down in good translations from original, not only sloppily told history book plot synopses)

There's no prescribed amount of fiction that you have to have for it to count. We just state that the work must be a lengthy work of fiction. How much is up to you... in general, there's no partial rebellion. You either are, or aren't. :)

hmm, apparently being a rebel is real easy. i'm going to work towards finishing a novel i've been working on off and on since 2006 or so. my goal all this year has been to finish it by the end of this year. another 50,000 words will take me very close. i find this WAY more difficult than the complete-ish novel i wrote for nanowrimo in 2009. but to top it off, i also have to be careful with the 50,000 words. i do want to push myself but not too hard - i do have a body and a mind that need TLC. so i still need to work on figuring out how to do that. but i tell you, if i honestly think i've gone and done what i've set out to do, i'm a gonna get myself that badge! so there!

I am taking the outline for last years NaNo novel and completely rewriting it from scratch. Word One on Day One. The ideas have merit, but it took me a year of mulling the old draft over to decide how to best treat them. So, I am not sure if this counts as rebellion or not, but I have taken a stand and will not fail my fellow Rebels.

I intend to write a series of short stories, but they are only loosely connected. They are going to be horror stories, but with different plots. I want to self-publish them together as one book after NaNo. (once they are edited of course) so while they aren't linked by actual characters or a specific theme, they are all of the same genre and intended to be published together. Does that make me a rebel or not?

I just raised my hand in the Rebel Forum to stand strong with the brave fellows there.

Nope... reusing old ideas and scrapping the old novel is not rebellion. :) You are not a rebel with this project. :)
From the first post:
<strong><em>I'm writing a collection of short stories. Am I a rebel?</em></strong>

Probably not. There's no actual rule on this one. We define a novel as "a lengthy work of fiction." However, we the moderators feel that since you find short story collections on the shelves alongside longer works of fiction, if they're related, they count. They need to have some common theme, or linking thread that weaves them together that makes them a single, "lengthy work of fiction."
I'm a Rebel, no question.

I first intended to read lots of fanfic and write 50,000 total words of comments/feedback to the authors -- of course that's non-fiction *about* fiction.

Reading 50,000 words of fanfiction and writing at least 1667 words worth of comments seems a more realistic goal. If I divide 1667 by the 30 days of November, that's about 56 words. I Tweet a LOT, which has honed my editing skills to a razor's edge because 140 characters (including spaces + punctuation) = about 20-25 words. So Tweeting 56 words a day = about 3 Tweets.

I have a novel I've been puttering away on. I have about 32,000 words written and lots more to go. I'm using NaNo to light a fire under my butt and give me the discipline to finish it already. I'll only validate what I've written in November, of course, since I want to add 50,000 or more words.

So... in my effort to actually outline/make notes for my novel, I came up with a very short introduction for the story. If I don't write things down when I come up with them, I can never remember them correctly later, and this was a week ago -- it would be long gone by Nov. 1.

Does that one 57 word paragraph make me a rebel?

Re: Am I a Rebel? Find out here!

This is... dicey.. I think you'd get a lot of different opinions. Some people would say yes - even one word makes you a rebel. I -PERSONALLY- and this is not necessarily Nano's standard - don't think 1 57 word paragraph is enough to be concerned with if that's all you do and don't write anymore. Because in that way it makes it more of a "thought" you don't want to forget.

Sometimes in my outlines I'll have a character give me a quote I don't want to forget - such as the first year the tagline for my novel is also a quote by one of the characters ("Being a man isn't just about glory and honor.") and I came up with it before November and I wouldn't have considered myself a rebel for that. (I was already a rebel because I was continuing the year before's story but that's way beside the point). So yeah.. that's my own opinion on that.

This question could be complicated, but I'm honestly not sure whether I'm a rebel or not, so here goes. I've been writing on my blog a series of short episodic stories with a single character, Catrina. She's nearly to the end of her second story arc (one more episode and it's done), and then I was going to write a full-fledged NaNo novel starring her. So it would be a third story arc, so to speak, but written as an actual novel, not a series of short stories.
I'd planned to use some of the characters from the previous episodes, but I hadn't planned to copy any of the episodes themselves into the novel. At most, the characters in the novel might refer to previous events. I suppose the best way to describe the novel is that it's a sequel to the blog posts, sorta like the Serenity movie to the Firefly TV series, except Nathan Fillion isn't in it. (c'est tragique). So.....am I a rebel?

Not even a little bit. Sequels and using preexisting characters are both fine. It sounds to me like you're writing a standalone novel without using any pre-existing work.

Is it a separate novel, as in a sequel, or part 2 of the same book?

If it's the latter, it's rebellion. If it's the former, it's not.
So... in my effort to actually outline/make notes for my novel, I came up with a very short introduction for the story. If I don't write things down when I come up with them, I can never remember them correctly later, and this was a week ago -- it would be long gone by Nov. 1.

Does that one 57 word paragraph make me a rebel?
Strictly according to the rules, yes. However, most people don't see any big deal with a start that small. In the end, it's up to you whether or not you're rebelling. If you feel like that 57 word start will invalidate your win, don't use it. You could set it aside, not refer to it, and call it a false start, and you'd be legitimate.

I know I'm a rebel: I'm hoping to write in German, a language I'm not terrifically proficient in, and as such I'm going to modify my word count to something ambitious but theoretically possible. I know I can't validate a less-than-50,000-word-novel and win, but is it okay, if I succeed at my chosen word count, to say that I won this year?
Well, you really wouldn't be winning, as you aren't abiding by the spirit or rules of the challenge. Whether or not you want to claim a win, in the end, is up to you.

MINE IS AN EVIL LAUGH
Yes, that's rebellion (although this thread is more for asking if you are a rebel, not declaring your intention to be one. :) That's the other sticky thread!)

I'm a Rebel and proud of it.

I have a novel I've been puttering away on. I have about 32,000 words written and lots more to go. I'm using NaNo to light a fire under my butt and give me the discipline to finish it already. I'll only validate what I've written in November, of course, since I want to add 50,000 or more words.

You should probably post this on the other thread. This thread is more for asking if you are a rebel, rather than declaring that you are. :)

Not at all! Many artists do NaNo, and like to illustrate their stories. The only problem is that no images may be included in your document to be validated, simply because it only takes plain text copy and paste. :) That doesn't mean you can't include them! In fact, we have an entire forum for artists, NaNo Artisans!

I'm with ya there, Caren4u; I had a bunch of projects to choose from for my first NaNoWriMo, and I originally settled on a sci-fi/fantasy that's been brewing in the back of my head, but just today I realized what I needed was a more realistic goal, something I'm more certain of. Heading to my dashboard to change the description of my project now, in fact. I'll be writing a fictionalized memoir as well - same kind of thing as you described! Feeling this is borderline rebellious, so I'm joining the rebel ranks here. Go, us!

Same here. I actually validated a book I didn't feel good about because I had written about 60000 words worth of original content. But it was in no way okay in my heart. So I didn't follow through on anything clean-up-wise. I am actually going to follow through on my idea (rebellious, because its a fictionalized memoirs), use some of the content I have previously used, but write 50,000 (probably more!) words worth of new material, not typing or planning a thing until the stroke of midnight (17 minutes from now, here).
Who knows? I may just use my previous material as planning notes? I may not like any of it. But I am rebellious nonetheless. Rebelliously playing by the rebellious..uh..book. heh.

I'm going to fictionalize my memoir at least start that way and see where it gets me. I may write it as short stories with a common thread. I'm attempting to be "legal" but my past tells me I may be most comfortable here in the company of fellow rebels! Glad to be here!

Fictionalized memoirs aren't rebellion. :) But you're welcome to post where you like.

Rebelliously playing by the rebellious..uh..book. heh.
Fictionalized memoirs are not actually rebellion. :) We don't have a rule about how much must be fiction to count.

However, using existing work is indeed rebellion.

What if I have an idea for what I want my fanfiction/crossover to end up being, and have a super detailed outline, but have started writing (just this morning ^_^) in what will be the third arc of the plot-line... simply put, I have not started at the beginning, and don't expect to continue in any sort of "chronological" (or otherwise) order.

am I being rebellious?
Is it a standalone novel, though? If it is, it's not rebellion. You're not required to write in any order, nor start at the beginning.

I am going to write two inter-related stories. One will be the holy book of the characters in the other book and will be rather short. However, these stories are inside of a series which has already been established... at least in my head. So despite being blasphemous, is this a rebellion?

So then you can't empty your diary into a novel? What if I did? Already through with about 2.4K words. . . what do you think? Should I restructure the rest to seem like a work of fiction, or should I continue writing. I want to write what's happened in life so as to capture it like a time capsule. Blogged about it here: http://wp.me/pouJD-cc

So rebel or not? And if there are chances that I shouldn't be, then please do suggest any ideas to restructure the rest of my auto-biography

Strictly pouring your diary into a novel without fictitious content makes you a rebel - if you do restructure it to include fiction and make it a sort've fictionalized memoir of types - that isn't rebellion. As to which way you should go - that's something only you can decide.

If you set aside the old work and do not refer to it, no, you're not rebelling. However, if it's a true rewrite (as in editing the old work) then it's rebellion.

It's totally fine. Many rebels feel it's not ethical to claim you win if you didn't stick to the rules, others feel that they should claim a win if they win their own personal challenge. It's up to you.

If it's truly not fiction, then it's rebellion. The fact that you're continuing an existing work AND it's nonficiton means that you're rebelling.
I'm just wondering..... I've technically written 4 chapters, but as a fanfiction. I'm converting it to an original work (with some themes also changed) with all new characters and several different character traits. I know I'd be counted as a rebel if I copy and paste stuff, but what about if I just rewrote it? Every word is written in November, but the ideas were already there and mapped out.................. Am I rebel?
Reusing ideas is fine, and not rebellion. Set aside the old work, and work from your head, and you're not rebelling at all. Not even close!

I think that what I am doing would make me a rebel, but I wanted to check. I found out about NaNoWriMo on October 31 at 11:45 PM so I didn't have any time to prepare and I have never written anything "just because" it was always for assignments so I thought that I was going to do an autobiographical fiction novel, however tonight I realized that I didn't really want to continue what I had started. So I just set my fingers on the keyboard and typed whatever popped into my mind. What came out was a rather humorous short story, well at least I think it is humorous. If I continue on this way I will have a bunch of random writings from this experience. So because the writing is random and doesn't really fit together that would make it not conform, correct?

Sorry this is so long, I tend to ramble when I am up too late!

It seems I am not a rebel. But for the sake of my clear conscience I would like to say that I am trying to put my name, my life situations, add a fictional spin on it and go on towards the goal of 50,000 and more. And I strongly feel I can call it a novel.
And I basically write for my own enjoyment. I enjoy when I write and have pleasure when I re read it after some gap. And I am happy to notice that some other people too find it interesting sometime. So I look for some formal forums, which helps by acting as an inspiration and a means of reaching it to those few who like it.

Huge thanks to NaNoWriMo for being one such forum.

I've decided to finally finish a novel I started as a series of short pieces and excerpts in a fiction workshop/class a few years ago. Since I'm a first-year PhD student (living in a new country, no less), I know that the likelihood of me actually reaching that goal this month is pretty much nil, but I figured this would at least motivate me to devote a little bit of time to the novel every day.

I'm using some of the pieces I've previously workshopped and throwing out others. As what I've previously written is in bits and pieces all over the place (some of them handwritten), I don't actually know the word count I'll be starting out with, but I'd put it at around only 10k, maybe less after I finish scrapping bits of it.

In 2008 I told myself that I was going to write 50,000 words for NaNo. I did. That month turned into an incredible trajectory and might be the single most helpful thing I've ever done for my fiction career.

Sooo....I'm writing words. Novels will spawn from these words. If I am booted from NaNoWriMo, I'll treat it like Steve Jobs getting booted from Apple. (So who was the rebel?)

No, using any preexisting work (continuing a work in progress) is against the rules, and is rebellion. Even if you don't count the previously written part.

The rules are clear: It must be from scratch. Anything else is rebellion.

I started the work then, didn't touch it until now and I started NaNo 2 days late. Since starting I've gone from writer's block to holy raging words streaming from my mind to finger tips to screen.

I can't stop and really have no desire to do so. I'm honestly using NaNo for that kick in the rear end to finally finish what I started in 2009. Darn it, I'm going to finish what I started because that's just the way I roll.

Re: Am I a Rebel? Find out here!

I've done Nanowrimo 4 years and won, the proper way, but this year I won't have the time.

I've never read a novel that is like what I'm writing, but I think that's because experimental stuff probably doesn't sell well or get published. Readers might find it disjoint, meandering, repetitive, unskilled. That's not really the point. It's still a novel in my mind, just a weird one. (Fantastic autobiography is how I'm listing the genre on my page, but so far it's really just a bunch of scenes based on my dreams that flow from one to the other and are loosely connected and probably develop over time.)

The point is that I'm not aiming for 50,000 at all (which is the point of Nanowrimo.) I don't really give a damn what word-count I hit, and that seems inherently rebellious to me. I just want to spend a minimum of six hours a week doing thoughtful writing. I know that I could possibly hit 50,000 just writing for six hours per week, but only if I made word-count my goal, which it is not. I won't reach 50K and that's fine with me. I don't really have any problems with my pace.

Therefore, everyone around me is writing in the True Frenzied Spirit of Nanowrimo and I'm just sort of chilling. I think at this point for me it's more important to set up a sustainable routine of daily writing (which I'd been having problems with) than write like crazy for a month (abandoning all of my school work) and just sort of only write every once in a while for the rest of the year until November again. During previous Novembers I picked up a pace which I could never hope to sustain once the month ended.

I guess my question is similar to Hunty's. Am I a rebel, or am I just a sad person with no ambition?

No, you're not a rebel. There's nothing in the rules about wanting to hit 50k or not. It's just that you don't win unless you do, make sense? If you write 30k, you've got a great thing going, but it's not enough to validate as a winner... but it's not rebellion. you just didn't win. :)

The True Frenzied Spirit isn't required, or even necessarily expected. I don't think you're a rebel, just doing things at your own pace.

I think I am too. I've heard of NaNoWriMo, but I get discouraged because of the great big 50k. I'm more of a fanfiction writer than anything else, but every so often I'll write something original, but then back out worrying about whether people will like it or not. :/ I'm too scared to show my work.

That, if not being busy with work. I KNOW I WON'T make the 50k by 11/30 because the muse just comes and goes. So does that make me one?
No, it doesn't. Not reaching 50k isn't rebellion, it's just not winning.

I wrote a script for Script Frenzy (and won!), but the script didn't contain allll of the detail I wanted it to since you're not supposed to 'direct from the page'. As such, I want to do a novelization of the script, adding detail, inner-monologues, more dialogue, etc., and essentially 'fleshing out' the story into novel form. Since I am technically re-using 'previously written prose', but this prose is more like an outline/notes, am I a rebel?
Novelizations of scripts are fine, as long as you aren't including any of the text you actually included in the script.

Would it be rebellion, or something worse than rebellion, to use 50k words, written within a consecutive period of 30 days (April 26th to May 25th), but not in November? I recorded the daily word counts, so I can put them in just as I wrote them.
Definitely. To win NaNoWriMo, all words MUST be written in November. You've written 50k, and that's laudable, but you haven't done NaNoWriMo.

If you're referring to it, yes, that's rebellion. It doesn't matter if you're not copy and pasting. If you can remember them, you can add it from memory, but if you use existing text, that's continuing an existing work.

There's no "legal" or "illegal" - this is an on your honor challenge, and there are no rules police who will throw you in rules jail.

What you're talking about is absolute rebellion. The point is to write a novel, not just combine words to get 50k. Combining more than one work to get the word count would be reblling.

I did NaNo last year. I was completely dissatisfied with my characters. They were absolutely flat and the details of the plot were... Well, the whole thing was pretty much crap.

I've spent the last year developing back stories on each of my main characters, focusing on where they came from, their experiences, how they see the world. I've also done a lot of research and elaborated my plot outline greatly.

This year I am working on the second draft. Everything I am writing, starting with word one is fresh and new. But I am referencing the notes I've accumulated over the past year. In essence, they are not locked in a drawer, but hung on the wall where I can see them easily.

Does that make me a rebel or a boyscout?

No one has answered this, so I'll give it a try. The saying here is, "if you think it's fiction, then so do we." I think this can also be, "If you think your stories are related, then they are." Maybe just taking place in the same century isn't related enough, but I think a collection of stories set in the history of your country would be an awesome idea :-) Maybe it can even have members of the same family through the years, showing how the different periods and events of history affect them as individuals and also the family's history.

From the very first post in this thread:

We really don't get that specific. We don't have any actual rules about short stories, so it's entirely up to you if you think it's a novel or not.

I'm rewriting a classic Victorian novel as SF, so i'm basing my work on someone else's. The main character in my book is a minor character in origina, so much will be different. I do plan to reuse some of the dialog from the original book, but, for example, in my version, one of the characters whose dialog I want to reuse has her mind taken over by another character in my version, (but not of course in the original), so even though some of the dialog will be same, the feel and the meaning should be completely different.

So, does this count as rebellion?

I'm pretty sure I'm a rebel. I'm taking characters and plots from last years novel and trying to turn it into a graphic novel. While there are sections that are actual storyline, the majority of it is stream of consciousness plotting and clarifying of those plots, working through potential plot holes and how to best plug them for dramatic effect. Its been really helpful and spawned some interesting ideas to use later in the story.

Not really, no; We do allow quoting by the book. How much is up to you. Is it possible for you to write your own dialogue now, and come back and add the original stuff after November? Either way, I think it's okay. I've always felt, though, that if you quote, you should at least write that many original words. AFter all, if you didn't write them...

There's no official limit on how much quoting is okay. It's up to you.

I'm not sure but I think I'm joining the rebellion. Can anyone tell me if I'm a rebel?

My Nano didn't even have much of a plot to begin with.

The place where it's set in is a world where anything goes but that world itself was broken.

The "plot" that was supposed to help "fix" the world never showed up, the "thread" that was supposed to connect the fragments I think got lost and the "novel" somehow managed to get hijacked by fragments and become even More broken and Still fell apart and now it feels like it's a whole lot of fragments that might not be connected; I can't seem to incorporate them all into the pretend story -- or I am/will Somehow figure out how, but right now it doesn't feel or seem like it -- and I think I have a bunch of random floating dialogue or voices in the air that seem to resist being connected or developed into scenes. &gt;.&lt; I think it's going towards incoherent. I think _I'm_ going towards incoherent.

I guess I could say the narrator got infected but it feels like narrator (and writer/me) got much more infected than I intended (wonder if this is any or much due to the story being told in first person perspective, but I'm not sure).*

Kind of getting depressed at this (stupid, I know) and for a while I was just happy to be writing again too, when I wasn't getting stuck or completely blanked by writer's block and completely unable to write Anything (random and/or fitting into the story or not), that is. -_-

Am I a rebel and should I just join the rebellion? I heard there were cookies.

I'm writing a poem for NaNoWriMo 50,000 words long if possible. I should have at least 30 different plot changes and i'm refusing to break it into smaller poems. It might be fiction but only in that the autobiographical nature is sometimes overtaken by ideas of talking with selkies and learning things from trees. I'd say it's probably more fantastical word choices than fiction is this rebellion and if it's not what forum do i go to?
thanks for helping.

I started off NaNo w/ a new novel but it's stalling b/c I'm seeing it in chunks but the next book in line to be written/released (I have one being released on Dec. 1) is pouring from me like water. That was started before Nov.1

To date I have 12005 words in the NaNo original
I have added 14k - ish to Book 2 (the next in the series to come out)
and worked on a short that needs revised, reworked and released w/ book 1 on Dec 1....

I'm pretty sure that w/ all the writing during Nov. I'm a rebel, but I think book 2 is going to end up being my focus over the original one planned/worked for NaNo - although I like where it's going, it's just going there VERY slowly.

I've decided I'm a rebel. I wrote my 'novel' last year from scratch = 50,500 words - it's was great BUT it didn't gel. So during the run up to Nano this year whilst thinking about what to do out of my never ending pile of ideas I woke one morning with the answer to how/why my last years novel went wrong and a few ahh's ho's and so that's it's later had the whole plot/beginning/ending formulated. It meant writing the whole thing from scratch as characters changed level of importance/storyline, the murderer changed, the reasoning behind the disappearance of my main character changed and I suddenly 'knew her'. So i have 'abandoned' Nano this year as i need to 'write' this not explore it. So... thank you gratefully Nano as without you who knows!!

It depends on how literally you're adapting it. If you -just- use the script as an outline you're not a rebel. But say you take dialogue from the script and put that into your novel, because it's prewritten -that- makes you a rebel.

Re: Am I a Rebel? Find out here!

In my case the novel was begun twenty-five years ago, started up in the language of crap, and was pretty soon shelved indefinitely. So what I needed from Nano was the kick up the ass to get me back on the keyboard.
And it worked! I've written 30,000 words from scratch, and given myself a whole new framework for the old novel, which I've rewritten accordingly. And suddenly it all makes sense. The story arcs and the characters all hang together - and the characters write their own journey as they travel through the landscape. The landscape hasn't changed a lot in twenty-five years, but the characters have.
I'm breaking every rule in the book, and am definitely a REBEL in big block caps. But the novel is being written, and it's been a really worthwhile exercise.
So whatever the Nano rules are, I can only advise everybody to Release Your Inner Rebel!
I thank you, because I'd never have done it without you ...

I feel so much better now that I fall into the category of Rebel than Traditionalist. Even at time when I'm not trying to be, I tend to swim against the stream (and at times, much to my wife's chagrin).

I was tasked with writing a screenplay, as well as my book. I also completed a few short stories which were graciously accepted by a literary magazine. And they are all make-believe words.

After a few days of frustration not thinking I was going to make my goal, I am renewed with a drive to achieve the cross the fictional cross line.

Maybe speculation on the future can be the actual fiction included. Also I can change some names to protect the innocent and not so innocent.

So... a quick question. I know that combining the wordcounts from two unrelated novels is rebellion if NEITHER is 50K individually, but it's non-rebellion if BOTH are 50K individually. What if one is and one isn't? I'm at 13.5K on my second novel and feeling a bit edgy about whether I can make it to 50K on time....

I am writing my autobiography again. I won doing this a few years ago. I call it a reboot though many of the events I write about will be the same since I am the same person. If I am not the same person, I have a lot more on my plate than a nanowrimo I just started working on yesterday.

Maybe speculation on the future can be the actual fiction included. Also I can change some names to protect the innocent and not so innocent.

This isn't really a thread for announcing your rebellion. :) It's for asking if you ARE a rebel.

No, it's not. Many of our overacheivers write more than one novel; once you've reached 50k on <em>one</em> novel, you're not a rebel anymore, and you can include whatever you like in your word count. :)

Thanks :) That's something of a relief, though I'm going to try to reach 50K anyway (I need to have a target, or the last four days will just be no fun). But... I can include "whatever I like"? I've also written some additional chapters to a fanfic I started before November; can I now include those as well?

Hi guys! I'm a bit late to the party, but I want to know if I'm a rebel. I gave up on a plot a while ago, but since I really like my characters I've made this NaNo a really long characterization exercise. There's sort of a connecting thread, but I wouldn't really call it a story. Ideas?

Not sure about this one at all, but my novel is based on a true story. The key word is based. It's about my brother-in-law going to prison, but beyond that, I'm filling in the rest with my own spin on it. Am I a rebel, or not?

Sounds like fiction to me... not rebellion. :) Basing something on a true story doesn't make it not a novel... heck, the bookstore's shelves are full of novels based on a true story.

If you don't think it's a story, then it's probably not a novel, and probably rebellion.

You've officially won. You can add anything you want to it.

I already know- next year, I'm going to be a rebel. XD I'm continuing this year's story (my word count lies, I lost almost 10,000 words in a computer crash, so I have 19,000) next year. But still, I have a question. It's still being a rebel either way- continuing with a fresh, new 50,000 from the 19,000 I have and just continuing from where I left off, keeping word count and all?

Continuing an existing work is indeed rebellion. Even if you write all 50k during November. :)

For June Camp NaNo I'm considering rewriting my 2008 NaNo novel. I don't intend to copy and paste any of the text, just reuse the plot and characters. Am I a rebel?
