Welcome to Rebellion! You are NOT a cheater.

<strong>A brief word about Rebel etiquette:</strong>

OLL chose to call this section Outside the Box &amp; this forum NaNo Rebels for very good reasons. It's for people all over the world who would like to join with other crazy/wonderful/terrifying writers to write 50K in the 30 days of November--but who will be doing it on their own terms. Marching to the beat of a different drummer. Having it their way.

We did NOT call it The Cheaters Corner, or The Fraud Forum, or the Wannabe Hangout, or... well, we could go on, but, again, you get the picture, right?

The good reason? First of all, we wanted to make this an inclusive event--but we chose the words we used because words are powerful. Using words with provocative, inflammatory connotations is negative. Please keep this in mind &amp; respect the spirit of NaNoWriMo &amp; the folks who use this forum when posting to this forum

I think I may be joining you guys this year. It's my 7th NaNo and I'm extremely busy lately and short on story ideas so far, so I'm thinking I may write a "quarter life memoir." I think it'll be a fun exercise (because the only non-fiction I write at the moment consists of blog posts) and a little bit less stressful (I don't do any planning, so the story is sometimes a bit hard to uncover). But I haven't decided for sure yet!

Hello, the usual rebel here (although I onlycall myself a rebel on the forrums, heh.) I always do first-draft WIPs during nano because I write 300k stories soooooo an extra 50k works for me!

Although technically last year it was a fresh draft and I wasn't a ~rebel~ but eh. Why fix something that ain't broken?

Hello Rebels... I'm Kaidee (as you could probably piece together from my username...) and I am half joining your ranks for this year, my second adventure with NaNoWriMo. Last year I found out about NaNoWriMo like three days before it was supposed to start, so I took a drabble I wrote (100 words of pure fiction) and expanded it mightily to meet the 50k words challenge that is NaNo. Unfortunately, I never actually finished said NaNoNovel, as I got pneumonia in December and I am a terrible patient, buttttt I'm finishing that novel this year. I plan to take it from 56.609 words (my current count) to just over 100,000 and to write a book of poetry alongside it, with its own total of 50,000 words. Too much? Probably. Will I try it anyway? Yup.

Since I can't decide on one idea in particular, I'm considering writing a collection of short stories. This may change before November 1 but for now, I'm here.

I'm going to officially join the ranks. For the past few years, I've started several novels over the course of the month... only to get bored 5K words into them and move on to the next one... and cycle through them all month. Now last year, I kept it down to 3, but still. They weren't related, so that's that.

's gonna be a good month.

Hello, fellow rebels! I have the greatest difficulty in finishing anything in one wrimo, so I am going to be redoing something I started in Camp. I probably won't be using any of the material I wrote--at least, not in its present form--but there might be some rewriting involved, not to mention all the free/preliminary writing I will be doing to get a feel for things. At least I'm not completely cheating...one of my nano novels is a rework, but my other nano novel will be a new effort. But that makes a total of 100k words, which is definitely going to be crazy.

I think I've claimed Rebel-status for the last 3 years running, and then ended up not Rebeling at all.

But this time I have an ironclad Rebel-excuse. I *love* my current novel, and I've only written maybe 10k on it, but I have a fairly good outline that will get me at least 50k on it. At least. I'm continuing my Danielle-story for NaNo, because honestly I'm in the middle of three different novels at the moment and just don't want to start a whole new one.

Howdy everyone! Last year was a disaster and I mean it. Got a creativity crashdown that stopped me on my tracks and my first writing after it was last month.

So, as I was really enjoying my novel and I want to be able to read it, I'm gonna finish that thing, 50k words or as many as it takes. Historical Fiction makes great stuff for being on the edge, as no matter how much investigation you have done before Nano, you still need to spend precious hours reading and figuring out instead of writing... ^_^

So, let's rock! (or scissors! or paper! :-)

I'm a rebel, Dottie. A loner. At least for this year! It's my second time doing NaNoWriMo and I'll be continuing work on my half-finished memoir. It's already at about 55,000 words, but I'm committing to working on finishing it (at least getting 50,000 more) by the end of November. So glad to meet my fellow rebels!

Re: Welcome to Rebellion! You are NOT a cheater.

Yeah, woohoo, proud to be a rebel! *grin*

I am a wrimo since 2003 and a rebel since 2008. In 2007 I did a 'cartoon of the day' about Nano on the Dutch forum, next to my NaNo novel of that year, and it was those cartoons that ended up being my first book (together with the series I did in 2008 as well). So after miserably failing at doing a rewrite in 2008 of my 2007 novel (how do you 'count' a rewrite?? Counting 'time' doesn't really work for me) I decided to throw myself at comic creation instead.

In 2009 I did 65 pages of a totally bizarre 'off the top of my head' comic story that I loved so much, I kept working on it the rest of the year until it was 141 pages long. Last year I edited and inked over 90 of those pages and this year I want to do the rest so I'll be able to finally finish and publish it!

Together with the 24 page comic I did earlier this month during 24 Hour Comic Day I will actually have THREE whole books, all thanks to NaNo and the legitimacy of being a rebel!
Yay!

Hello, rebels! After completely failing in an attempt to write fiction (despite *technically* winning...), and being banned from writing a full novel, I'm going to try and write a poem a day for the whole month. I'll keep trach of my word count, to keep in the spirit of things, but I'll be happy if I end up with a poem everyday~

I look forward to joining your ranks

Oh my goodness, I never thought I'd find myself in this part of the forum. Not because I thought it was bad or anything, I mean who doesn't love to rebel from time to time. I'd just always had a story to write. But this year I did Camp Nano in July and won, got burned out half way through August and quit, and thought for November I'd try a new kind of novel, but I needed to do some research and just didn't get to it yet, so I was at a loss of what to do. I can't miss Nano, that's for sure, and then it hit me. I did Script Frenzy this year and won but didn't finish, it's kind of a long script for a photostory I am doing. I need more script and had always planned to finish it up earlier this year. Yeah, that didn't happen. So I figured, screw it, I'll do it for Nano. And that brings me here today among you awesome rebels. I look forward to writing along side of you all and sharing my excitement and glee over getting work done on my script while cheering you all on with your writing adventures. So thank you for letting me join the Rebellion, I promise to wave my rebel flag with pride. And I'll meet you all at the starting line!!! :-)

I found out about NaNo last year during the month of November. It seemed too overwhelming last year to try to write 50,000 words in only half a month, but this year somehow I got the reminder of the event early in October, so I've been outlining and listing out topics to write about. This year I will be writing my life story. Plenty of material there for 50,000 words. I've even got an idea for a novel for next year, but I'll save it for then. I'm so happy to be part of the rebels group. No one has ever called me "normal."

I think I've pretty much always rebelled, but never stopped by here (pretty much stuck to my regional forum). I basically use NaNo to push out 50,000+ words of something I want to eventually publish/get published. So it's often a work in progress, or with already developed characters and ideas.

Happy to be here! Hope to get to know all of you over the course of November!

Failing NaNoWriMo has become a yearly tradition for me, but this year I hope to do better with a little rebellion. I am pretty determined to write 50k words, and I've decided to do it in the form of a letter (or a series of them) to my long-distance boyfriend. I expect long stretches of "all about me" laced with commentary and occasional patches of mushy-lovey stuff.

Hey everyone! I tried to do NaNo last year, and it totally didn't work out for me. It wasn't conducive to my writing style at all. But I think part of that may be because I was trying to write fiction. Deep in my heart, I know I am very much a memoirist. Trying this again, but now I can proudly call myself a rebel.

Thank you, and hello fellow rebels.

I think I'm going to have to trade in my shiny pretty 'winner' badges this year for 'rebel' status- because the novel I started last year (and have not been able to finish due to health issues off the MAP and life issues beyond belief) is haunting me, day and night, and I feel I've abandoned my poor characters.

They're stuck in my head, and it's dark and cold and I have to go in after them!

Unless something whacks me over the head at 12:01 on November 1 and I have to start something new, I'm really thinking this year it's more important to me to finally give my characters the finished plot they deserve.

but i can't imagine not being around/here so thank you for this forum (and for not calling us 'cheaters'!)

Viva la Nano!
(yes, be warned, the Coldplay will soon follow...)

so I guess I'm as well a Rebel! Because I don't want to start a new novel because I've started one in february and got stuck at 40.000 words in the middle of the story... and haven't written any further since march. But now I guess is the perfect opportunity for me to write the second part and the end of my story. Maybe it gets better if I have a time pressure. And so for me it would be stupid to start a new story if I'm still stucked in another one, which is totally not finished and only in the middle. So I'm here with you! :)
Mh, ... it's just my first year at the Nano and I'm already on the 'dark side' with the rebellions! *grea* :D

Craig, that's completely up to you. Some rebels feel that not going by the book means they shouldn't validate. Others, like me, say that because Nano is meant to be a -personal- challenge - if you did the work, then heck yes you should validate! Whether you did it by the book or not. So it really is a personal decision.

Greetings! I won Nano as a non-rebel in 2003 and all attempts since then have been a bit half-hearted. This year, though, I am very committed and very rebellious. I've been wanting to start a blog for some time, which is going to be a mix of technical articles (i.e. really non-fiction-y non-fiction), creative non-fiction, and speculative fiction. Basically, I've been collecting post ideas/inspirations for some time now, and I have never actually WRITTEN any of them. Also, enough of them are fiction-based that I think I can approach the project as though I were writing a collection of linked short stories, some of which just happen to be factual. Sort of like the aesthetic at the Museum of Jurassic Technology in Los Angeles.

Anyway, I think I'm firmly in the rebel camp, but I think you can see how I thought Nano might be a good way to jumpstart this long-overdue project.

This is my third NaNo, but my first time being a rebel, but it doesn't feel that way, because writing is 'only' a hobby, and drawing is my real passion. So I'm planning on drawing a novel. I still have to figure out how to translate drawings in to a wordcount, but I still have a some time to do that.

This is my first year here too. I have started a new story already, but really want to focus on it during NaNoWriMo. I haven't gotten far into it yet but really think a month of nonstop writing would probably get it really going.

Greetings rebels. Another finishing-my-novel-rebel here. The start was a proper victory in 2009, and last year I intended to finish it, except accidentally forgot which novel was which and ended up finishing my 2008 novel (also a victory). So this year I'm finishing the 2009 novel for real this time. 50,000 new words, and a bona-fide end required to declare personal victory.

This is my second year. Last year's fiction attempt was an epic fail so I've decided to rebel this year. I'm just going to write 50,000 words however they come to me: poem, short story, journal entry, letter, whatever. Who knows, it might lead to starting the blog I've always wanted to start but have been chronically procrastinating about.

Viva la rebellion!

This my first year doing NanNo, though I've known about it for a couple years but have always been way too overwhelmed to participate. I have a half-completed novel sitting at just over 50,000 words that I haven't touched in months because of a massive wall that I hit mid-story. I'm going to use November to flesh out that second half so my characters can finally have some closure!

Re: Welcome to Rebellion! You are NOT a cheater.

This is the first time I'll be attempting this if I don't chicken out before it even starts, though I've been aware of the existence of NaNoWriMo for a few years. And I think I'm going to go rebel even as a noob because something I've never been swimming in is good ideas, and I tend to just modify and rethink the same handful of ideas over and over. I have 30,000 words of "experimental" writing about the world of that story, and because I plan on using the same characters and plot points for NaNo, I guess I'm a rebel for saying that I will probably refer back to some of the things I've written during November and not work 100% from memory alone. I'm not planning to lift whole chunks of things I've written previously, but I do think I'll be rewriting ideas I've committed to paper before, and referring to those older versions to figure out how to improve them. I guess that classifies as being a rebel, since they're more than just plans I'll be looking at.

It seems like it's ill-advised to do NaNo with stuff you'd previously worked on because you're already too attached to the characters and ideas to totally throw caution to the wind, but I'm going to try it anyway because the chances of me coming up with a wholly new idea in the next few days are slim to none.

Hello everyone - I have attempted NaNoWriMo several times in the past, and all attempts have crashed and burned. I am not much of a fiction writer, unless I take my specific experiences and fictionalize them. I may be incorporating some of this strategy this year, but I mainly am going to try one of the following:

* short stories, of whatever length, in whatever quantity that is required to get up to 50k words.

* nonfiction: family, personal or professional history; musings on life and metaphysical speculation (RIP Professor Roberts)

I am now proudly and officially joining the NaNoWriMo Rebel Movement. Good luck everyone!

I've finished two NaNos before (08 and 09) the non-rebel way, then lost focus last year by the end of the first week. This year I am determined to write 50K, but I really don't want to move on to something new when I have two stories I've already started and want to finish. (Neither is the 2010 NaNo effort; that one stank.) After going back and forth with wanting to play by the rules, I've finally decided to join the rebel movement and finish one - or both - of these stories this November, writing at least 50K of new material. I intend to validate, too, when I meet my goal, because hey! 50K and at least one completed novel! What's not to validate! (If the NaNo police are reading this and see it differently, I suppose I'll be getting a visit from their goons. What do NaNo goons look like anyway? Might be interesting to meet one.)

Hi all, I'm being a rebel because I want to finish what I started last year. I got to 50,000 words last November, but we all know 50K isn't really a novel. So I'm going for another 50K to finish it.

This being my first novel, I think it's more important to finish it before moving on to my next idea. I don't want to put aside what I've already got going, just because of some arbitrary 50K goal. But I love the nanowrimo idea and spirit, because it helps me stay focused. I'm here to finish my novel, and next year maybe I'll follow the rules again.

I'm a rebel since I've something I've been working on since earlier in year which is an epic. I'm near end of current saga so my goal is to see to it that the saga is finished.

I almost didn't do this because someone really pissed me off with their attitude to NaNo. They wanted me to literally stop writing when I've worked hard on my own, under my own standards, and so forth while they've been lazy, never getting anything done and now trying to use NaNo as their location to "Well, I'll finally do it here" then try to tell me to stay out of NaNo because I'm not writing it within the month.

I guess I will be a Rebel as well. Certain that there will be moments where I feel differently, but right now i am convinced that what Edmund White said to me in Paris held some weight: Write What you Know about. And nothing do I know more about, or feel is more interesting, than memoir. I almost don't understand why memoir is rebellion;but maybe I will understand that after I have the 50,000 words down. I do want to start a new thread within this Rebel forum, made only for us rebels who want to write memoir: the question is this: if you're excellent at telling detail, and everything you write about in detail is somehow fascinating at least to you and those who care about you, how do you weed through the memory to decide what is "pertinent" to your story?

I am going to write. I might use some things I've written in the past or I might not and write everything, a new. I wrote a little in this month of October concerning an outline and I really don't do outlines well. Some people are good at plotting their journey, well some people are very good writers.

I am just going to write anything I want, anyway I want, and although it may not be great, it will be my book. I suppose that attitude makes me rebel? The goal is 50k with a beginning and an end - when November 2011 comes to a close.

If I finish my 50K words in time, then what I'll be doing is taking my story and finishing it the rest of the way or at least adding another 50K to it. Wish me luck!
Third NaNo
First time as a Rebel

I spent the past year doggedly gnawing at my NaNo2010 draft trying to finish it. Having come to terms with the fact that the story needs a complete rewrite, I have chosen my place as an Official NaNo Rebel. I am going in from scratch and starting the novel over from word One on November 1st and plowing through until November 31st.

Thankfully, I am in good company

I guess I belong here too. Got out 68K in last year's nano and never touched the work after Nov 30th. I want to pick up the project and maybe finish it, since I already have the outline of most of the rest. Been wondering about the "correctness" of this since I signed up for Nano 2011 and I'm glad to see this space exists. Fits me nicely. Go rebels!

Hey Rebels!
I'm thinking of continuing my novel, I'm about 6000 words in, so 50,000 words would really help! Then again, there's this mad little idea running around my head of free-writing something completely organic and not already plotted out and see where it goes...either way, I'm glad to be in the company of other Rebels:)

Hi, I create in my dreams sometimes that seem like a whole novel but awake I find it difficult to make up stuff so I am going to have to rely on personal experiences to put together my novel. I've even considered a sort of journaling format with entries spread out over several years because I have had some really intense experiences but spread out. Or images get from meditation versus my everyday trials and tribulations. Or starting from where I am now to a fictionalized account of how I want things to turn out. (I am 62)
Or writing about my cats, I have or have had enough to have a chapter for each cat. I believe it will fall under chick lit because its written by a woman about a woman's journey.

Re: Welcome to Rebellion! You are NOT a cheater.

Hi, fellow rebels!

Pretty much, it's a joke among my family and friends that I'm always writing and never finish anything. Sadly, this is true. So now I finally have a story that looks like it might turn out cohesive, and I'm absolutely determined to finish it. My problem is motivation. I've been working on this thing for about a year and a half now, and for all that time, there's surprisingly little of it. That's because it's been rewritten almost from scratch twice. It's a sort of hybrid of three other stories that never did get finished, plus more original ideas. I did NaNo in 2007, and things didn't go so well for a lot of reasons, but I love the spirit of this event, of all of us joining together to accomplish a more or less common goal. So I'm breaking all the rules. My goal is not to start from scratch, because no way am I abandoning something that finally, finally looks like it might work. My goal isn't even 50,000 words. I have more than that already, and I don't like what happens to my stories when I focus on word count instead of what the words say. My goal is simply to write every single day in November. No excuses, no getting out of it, no putting it off for other things. Originally I wasn't going to register because I didn't feel like there would be a place for this loose approach, but Aniremi, who is my roomate, and best friend, encouraged me to do it anyway, and I couldn't resist becoming a part of this community.

To the Staff, thanks for making a place for those of us who, for whatever reason, can't or don't want to play by the rules. And to the rest of you, good luck and let's have fun!

I'm joining in this year, my first year at nano to do &gt; 50K words of content for my blog! I hope to develop 50 posts (typically run from 500-1000 words), 10 one week ecourses, a blog series (that will become an ebook later), a 10K ebook, 3 shorter 5K ebooks and goodness knows what else! Lofty goals but I'm sure I can reach some of them. I'm shooting for 2000 words a day which isn't much more than what I do now.

I hit 50k words in 2010 in spite of rewriting nearly 2/3s of it at week three. (I hated what I had written already so much I lost the will to continue it). However that didn't finish the book so I am planning to pick it up and finish it this year... hopefully it has another 50k in it... but I'm terribly garrulous so I suspect it does! If nothing else I'll describe LOTS of scenery as the MCs hike through the National Park!

This is my first NaNo! I've never participated before because I don't write fiction and I didn't know that there was an option to do otherwise. I'm glad that I found you! I'm working on my second book with a good friend but this will be a great way to get a kick start towards meeting our publishers deadline of June 15th.

Looking forward to rebelling with you all!

I belong here, I'm sure. The last couple of years I decided I wanted to do Nano mid October, and by the time Nov 1 came around I had lost all steam. I decided I needed to keep the momentum, so I've started early, with a goal to also finish early. It will also accommodate that I'll be away for a while at the end of the month. Cheater? Probably. But in every other way I'm following the rules.

I'm going to be a rebel for two reasons. One, No way I could do it in November, my Exam Month. Instead, I'm likely to start between mid November to early December, and spend 30 days on it.

The other thing is that I will be using approximately 2000 words from a prior attempt. The final product is likely to be more than 52000 words so I will be writing at least 50000 words - but I'm still a rebel anyway.

So glad to find this and be a Rebel instead of a cheater! This is my 3rd Nano. First one I did the novel thing but only got about 30k. Last year I crashed and burned in the fictional writing arena. Maybe if I do it my own way, this year will be more of a success.

I love the energy and challenge of Nano but my goal is to write- doesn't matter what, just write. I do have a faint outline of a story I want to write and will try to focus on that but I will probably find days that I just want to freewrite or write poetry or blog posts. I thought this might be cheating but I will be keeping the ideas I excavate for future projects and meticulously minding the word count. I'm glad to read that I am not alone in the rebel department and when I get 50k I will consider it a win!

Happy Furious Writing~

Last year was my first year and I won. It was a freewriting attempt with a clear plan in my mind, although my story was pretty much finished at 40,000 words, so the last day of writing was hell, but I did it. The concept is good, but I think salvaging the novel would be much more work than what it's worth. Therefore, it was nothing more than an exercise to prove to myself that I could do it. Even though that's all it was, that is still one hell of an accomplishment.

This year, I'm writing a completely different genre, although I've already started it. I have a research outline and the very beginning of a plot outline. I've already written some scenes. Hey, you can't shelf that stuff when creativity strikes! We've all been there when the well was dry. So, even though I'm starting November as a rebel, I still have the goal of writing 50,000 words, this month. I'm shooting for a story of about 100,000 words, and I already have ideas for sequels. I'm very excited!

Can NaNo rebels go to the NaNo meetings? I saw mentioned on one site that they were not.  the group seemed very sweet and possitve and I am sure they are just uninformed.  They sound mostly young and very excited and happy. So I definatellly would not want anything done to dampen their happy spirit.   I did see that the leader mentioned, only real NaNo's sorry.  I definatly think they are great and maybe just dont know?  and being 47 I can't stay up very late and plan on meeting a few people for coffee on saturdays. so i wont even be attending their young peoples stuff.   Anyhoo, just a small mention and if anyone knows;

Are NaNo rebels are also included in the regular meet-ups? My guess is yes; although I could be wrong. It might be worth a small blurb somewhere if the answer is yes. but nothing directed specifically at anyone because i really do honestly believe its young peoples enthusiasm and wanting to follow the good rules and everything; it might be cool to just explain that NaNo rebels can also join along? I dunno?

Maybe as simple as a thread by the leader that says, yes NaNo rebels can go to the meet-ups? that might be useful?
whadda think? whatever solution it is so minor and should be reallly really really low key, like its just a passing thought,

This is my first time to Nano and I find out that I'm a rebel as I am writing a therapeutic baking book. I've never rebelled in life before and I find that I'm liking the title already. Perhaps it will impact on other areas of my life too! Maybe my time to rebel has finally come.

Hello to all other rebels. Look forward to checking in with you over the next 30 days.

May I join the rebellion? I wrote my NaNonovel, all 50k of it last year and had a blast. However, a lot has gone on in the last year for me, and my novel was set aside an not touched since last December. This year I am going to rebel and write 50k more words for the same novel. Tighten, tweak, and hopefully end the month with a completed draft.

I came to a place where I didn't know where the story was going...bummer. Now, I have ideas and am chomping at the bit to finish! Glad there's somewhere for all of us : )

This looks like the place for me. (and hello Jettasun!) After three (almost four) years of on-and-off work I have 42,000 words of a novel that looks to be about half-done. So I'm joining nanowrimo (first time) in hopes of just clawing my way to 50,000 words. Which doesn't sound like much to all those folks out there planning to write the whole 50,000 in one month, but for me would be huge. It means upping my output from (on average and occasionally) 50 words a day to about 260 words a day with (gasp!) no missed days. Any support for this modest goal will be most welcome.

Proudly embracing my rebel status! I'm currently working on a tv-series bible, and have just gotten an idea for a spin-off in a parallel universe, so my goal this November is to finish these bibles and pilot scripts for both of the shows, and then as many episodes as I can / it takes to reach 50k.
I guess I could have started a new novel, but what would make me feel accomplished the most is finishing this project, and that's exactly what I'm doing! Go rebels! :)

Yep; count me in as a rebel. I'd originally decided to write the sci-fi/fantasy novel that's been brewing in the back of my head, but *sigh* I'd just be setting myself up for failure, and gosh I don't want that. So for my first NaNoWriMo I'll be writing a series of articles. I'm using NaNoWriMo - in the rebel forum! yeeeahhh! - to help me establish a more productive habit as a writer. My aim: To write enough articles to fit the 50,000 word goal. I write a LOT every day, but need to put some focus into it. Thanks, all you rebels! I'm so excited!

Re: Welcome to Rebellion! You are NOT a cheater.

I'm thinking of something completely different this year... I've done (and won) three NaNo's under my old name, and having just switched usernames this year, I think I'd like to switch MOs too. I had word goals of 150K and doing three novels and all this whatnot but.... I'm cutting the word count in half, to 75K (still more than I've done before, topping out at 60K one year), and I'll be doing a series of longer short stories (about 10-20K a piece) to fulfill this personal quota. THEN with that other 75K I plan on doing a lot of fan fiction!! (I don't count this during NaNo as, for me, this is the time of year to work on original pieces.) So I'm glad to find others thinking Outside the Box!!

Howdy, fellow Rebels!!! :-D

Hi folks. I have never written a story more than a few paragraphs long. I do write decent poetry. I was encouraged by the person I am dating (who is a writer) that I could indeed write if I tried. The thing is that the only story I have ever wanted to get down on paper is my own. My life often feels like a crazy work of fiction but it is not. I am going to be a rebel and write my autobiography.

Here I thought I was being all creative on my blog when I created a challenge called "NaNoRebels" -- to write 1,500 or more words per day and spend an hour or more per week refueling to keep motivation up.

Okay. Just a quick check in, now it's back to business.

HI fellowrebels

I'm rebelling this year, having done the fiction thing here two years ago. This year i havea non-fiction book to finish on CSR, and then I hope to start the fantasy book that was to be my original effort this year. So I'm rebelling, but will be keeping word count like a demon accountant - not validating though.

Looking forward to the rebel experience

Hullo Hullo.

I suspect I've been a rebel since 2006. I was a straightlaced and traditional NaNo-er from 2003-2005 but then I joined academia, and my writing life also got exciting in different ways. I'm really not supposed to be doing ANYTHING related to writing that isn't academic this month but I am a creative writer first, and I LOVE the energy this time of year. October 31 comes around and I start to twitch. I can't /not/ NaNo. But I can't do 50k in a month ever again, if it isn't my thesis, it's my RSI. Instead, my goal is adding a chapter, or even half a chapter to my novel draft. One chapter closer to second draft would be nice. Like some of you, this novel is a previous NaNo novel. My first, as a matter of fact, though it is much changed now into something even more richer and stranger.

I look forward to this month and hanging out here!

Hullo and huzzah!

I was a straight-laced by-the-book NaNo Winner in 2010, but this year I actually have *paid* writing projects on the go, plus I have a great project idea for a 25,000 e-book that I would love to get off the ground before the holiday season. So since I'm writing anywhere between 800-1200 paid words a day, I think I can squeeze in another 800 words or so and get my e-book completed by the end of the month. I'm going to be combining my paid and unpaid word counts ("Heretic!" I hear them shouting in the distance), but that's the reality of NaNo 2011 for me.

Glad to see I'm in good company!

I wasn't actually going to do NaNo this year, but this morning it seemed like a good idea so here I am. Last year I was also a Rebel. I like to write non-fiction, and have writing projects for my business that I need to do, but I procrastinate! Hopefully this community will help me get engaged with my writing and complete a presentation that I hope to use at some upcoming conferences. Good luck to everyone!

I've debated, in years past, of doing a collection of short stories [making each story either 2000 words at least [and therefore having 25 stories when I'm done] or doing 4 at 11662 words each [one a week, approximately] or some variation of that. But, I always worried that I would be considered a cheater, and that it wouldn't be counted. But, I feel a bit better, and I might do that next year. Or maybe for Camp NaNoWriMo :)

Didn't even realize I was a rebel! Both this year and last, which was my first year, I started writing before the 1st. I didn't mean to, actually. Each year, I started a novel in early to mid-September, and they kinda became my NaNo novel. I did not get far at all last year, so, I'm hoping to make it this year:)

I'm a rebel this year :)

The time has come to seriously prioritize my business so I am using the spur of Nano to create 50000 words of mixed content - articles, reviews, essays, maybe an ebook if the muse comes upon me (or complete one of the ones I have half written somewhere!) related to that.

I did Nano for the first and only time so far in 2009 and 'won' but 'it' was a heap of steaming poo, that said I did about 40000 of the words in the last 5 days! I'm planning to be more organized this year.

I didn't do Nano last year as I had some workshops and an assessment to undergo.

modest word count

A good first day, by my own (admittedly modest) standards: 327 words. It's been many months since I've been able to stay on task for three hours straight and rack up this many words--and since my personal goal is only to build from an existing 42,000 words and reach 50,000 by the end of the month (about 260 words each day) I am already ahead of myself. Yes, I know the spirit of NaNoWriMo is quantity not quality but on this forum we are all about rebellion, right? And those 327 were all GOOD words, pardner!

I'm continuing and rewriting last year's novel, so I'm a rebel. But in my defense I haven't touched it since the moment December 2010 rolled in...and now i'm tearing it apart and starting over using pieces from the older version. I still think it should get validated because last year I didn't finish the novel, I only reached the word count.

Hi everybody! My name is Michelle and I decided to participate in NaNo this morning. I have never tried to do this before. A friend of mine talked me into it the other day when I asked her if it was cheating to add 50,000 words to an already existing manuscript. "Heck no," said she, "You're just a rebel!" So here I am, flying my tie fighter at the Death Star. Good luck to all of you!

Hello, I guess I am a Rebel as well. Not only am I planning on using Nano to finish three different stories (a sherlock holmes I have been needing to finish for about 5 years, a Pride and prejudice what if story and a surprise for a fellow nanoer) but also I am only shooting for 25,000 words. Why this may not seem like much to most people I have never been able to get past 10,000 before life ended nano for me. Yep so that's it I am a rebel, but oh how much fun we shall all have!!

Re: Welcome to Rebellion! You are NOT a cheater.

Hallelujah! Sweet Jesus, Mary and Voldemort! There is a place for me in the great NaNo Universe! My plan all along was to get back in the saddle with a novel I started a few months ago but had to put aside late in August for health reasons (surgery). I was resolved to use the "push" of NaNoWriMo to make me get back into regular writing and complete what I started. But, after reading the rules and discussing it with a few other NaNo-ees, my honesty got the better of me so I started a new story last night. After 600 words of a comedy that just wasn't cutting it, I began another idea and got 1.2K done. I really like the story and it is a good start on what could be a dyn-o-mite book but I still have that other novel in the back of my mind whose characters keep screaming at me, "But, You promised us! It's not fair!! Now you are abandoning us for ....another thriller with a different mass murderer!"

I'm telling you, I was contemplating heavy medication!!

But now...with all you wonderful rebels...God bless you everyone, I can keep my promise to my original novel and gently let the other mass murderer know that the first group of characters and their story really deserve the lion's share of attention. I mean...A promise is a promise, right?

Maybe I'll award the second one a Mr. You're-a-really-great-bad-guy-with-loads-of-potential-and-I'll get to you next- Award?

Anyway...thankyou all!!!!!!

I have a 25,000 WIP novel and I am going to finish it out at roughly 75,000 using NaNo as my inspiration. I have a great story but it's been languishing and I'm going to use NaNo as the butt kick I need.

So glad to know I'm not the only one :)

Re: Welcome to Rebellion! You are NOT a cheater.

Looks like I am a rebel this year because I want to use NaNo to get the novel I 'won' with last year (as a brand new novel) closer to the 100k that a mainstream novel requires. I, too, am going to start a brand new draft but I will be using some sections that I have already written but I won't be counting them toward my NaNo totals along the way, so that it's clear that I am expanding my total not just going in circles. Obviously, when I validate my novel it will (I hope) be substantially more than 50k, but only after I validate - unless of course the new ends up completely outweighing the old, which is always a possibility.

I think that if I manage to add 50k to my novel and only count those new words, I won't be dishonoring NaNo, or other NaNo-ers for validating it, especially since NaNo is supposed to help us write a novel, not just half a one. I think.

Hey there! This is my first NaNo, and I hadn't even heard of it until the middle of last week when a good friend of mine suggested we do it together. I got SO EXCITED! YAAAYY I'll finally have the motivation to work on that novel I started a while back (only got 3K words written though) then found out I couldn't use it, I tried to think of another idea, but I'm in a bit of a dry spell, so I decided to use it anyway and just subtract the words I already wrote... then I found out that was against the rules too. I started feeling a bit discouraged, then I found you guys. Now I am ready to press forward, be a rebel and validate when I hit 53025. I'm so excited!!!

This is my second NaNo. I didn't even crack 2000 last year, so when the time arrived for this year's event and I still didn't have a story to write, I decided to write anything that pops into my head. A kind of messed up stream-of-consciousness/unconsciousness set of diary entries. Or, seeing as I'm writing down any kind of crap that pops into my head, I should probably call it stream-of-excrement. Wanna read my diarrhoea?

I started with 42,893 and I'm hoping to get to 50,000 by the end of the month--yes, I know, a very modest goal, but the book has been stalled or inching along for such a long time that this actually would mean h-u-g-e progress.
Anyone else out there with goals as minimal as mine? I'm shooting for 260 each day. Day one, 327. Day two, 403. At this rate (though no promises) I'll beat my goal into the ground.

Hi, I'm Karen, and this is my first time doing NaNoWriMo. I've just read the first page of this thread and i see there is a freewriter and a journaler here. Yay! I did have a novel sort of planned, although my few tries at fiction have always sucked, because i thought we had to. Now I'm thinking of just freewriting and see what comes out. Especially since I just wrote 2400 words in the last hour and a half on a subject unrelated to my novel, which i've barely got 400 words done on. I have journalled, morning paged, just written to work things through - i think on paper mainly. i guess it would be cheating to get out old journal entries, dust them off, and make something out of them? maybe that's a project for another time. I think I'll just freewrite and see what my inner writer comes up with. Then maybe i can edit it into something readable. This sounds like fun!

Oh wow. There's a NaNo group for everyone, even me. Cool.

I'm not doing a novel this year. I'm going to overcome my lack of output over the last 11 months by writing short stories. Every day. From whatever writing prompt or other source that interests me. Of whatever length the stories turn out to be. I doubt my total output will be anywhere close to 50K, but I will come out of this month with a bunch of completed stories, to revise, shred, get critiqued, or even submit.

I rarely do things properly. Knowing myself, I boldly chose to align with the rebels. My 50,000 words may not all be ascribed to the same writing project. One is a fantasy novel. One is non-fiction book. One is a compilation of short stories and blog posts. Viva La Rebellion. Here's to all of us, to our goals, to our words, to our sharing! I'm proud to be among the crew!

Re: Welcome to Rebellion! You are NOT a cheater.

I am so happy there is a place for me. I am using nanowrimo to push me to rewrite a novel I started 4 years ago. I am primarily an acrylic and mixed media artist, so I am taking the month of November off of painting to concentrate on writing. My novel has 78,000 words and needs plenty of revision and additions. I am working on a chapter a day, and am posting my word count as I go along, but it includes what I have already written, so in the end I won't be validating my novel and won't be able to be a winner of nanowrimo, but I will have "won" if I get this novel ready for professional editing. I love the forums and the community of writers. I'm always a rebel at something, so why should this be any different?

Hi there, I am a rebel! I am sort of righting an autobiography with a twist. It is based on my life but coming at it from the perspective of having a mental health disability, what may have contributed to it, and how it has affected and does affect me life and my relationships. It is an exploration and its so far been mostly on the fun side. I am seriously motivated this year. I was new to nano last year and didn't get very far due to lack of time and motivation. This year I have all the time in the world and happily some motivation to go along with it. I am excited about the nano journey and being a rebel absolutely fits me to a tee. Smiles!

I can't wait till April to work on my radio play, I want to get this thing done now so I can start producing it. The NaNo challenge seemed fitting since I've never written anything of significant length so far and wanted to see how far I could get in a month. I'm almost to 5K words in the radio play and have ideas for short stories and other nonsense along the way. I'm hoping this will be a very productive month for my writing.

Viva La Rebellion!

With that said, it's nice to meet fellow Rebels. ;-)
I started my novel last year, and before Nov 1, 2011 I hadn't touched it since Nov 30, 2010. Last year I managed to do 34k words before Nov 30. But my laptop broke and the only backup I had of my novel was what I had emailed to myself in the middle of Nov last year. After some tears and 20min breaking things fest I decided to go ahead with it anyway even though I had to basically start all over from chapter 5. I started this year with 15,022k word novel, but I haven't included that word count in my NaNo word count for this year. I just took 15,022 to zero in my head and used only the words I actually had wrote each day this Nov. Finding that I was not alone was a great burden lifter and opened up the original giddiness of creative writing. So for now I bid you all adieu as I am off to be a slave to my mind and my characters.

I've done Nano a few times before and I knew I wasn't going to do it strictly by the book this year. But it's only in really digging into this forum that I realize that what I'm doing is a perfectly legitimate/illegitimate way to approach it. I had the beginning of a novel from a Muse Conference workshop I'd attended but felt sort of guilty using something I'd already begun, so though I decided to just do it anyway, I'd been sort of dithering around this last week. Now I'm in the groove with the story and find out that my approach by writing 50K of new words is totally copacetic with the rebel forces. Yey! Nanochallenge, you just got real.

After attempting to start again on my novel, I have succumbed to the fact that personal circumstances mean that making 50 000 words in 30 days is a virtual impossibility. Hence, on my first NaNoWriMo, I am here.

With 47 000 words already done, and a year-long writer's block behind me, I just need to hammer through the closing battle scenes and a nice little denouement in the final chapter, then I can start the rewrites and tweaks.

Thanks for having me chaps.

Re: Welcome to Rebellion! You are NOT a cheater.

Heh. I think I may be one of those individuals who's not merely a rebel but an actual cheater. I'm not writing a novel, or at least nothing meant to be a novel, and I'm not starting anything from scratch. I'm also working on more than one story at a time here, and a lot of what I'm doing is typing up stuff I have hand written previously. I'm also counting stuff that's not related to any of my stories just my general ramblings, rantings and musings. Basically I'm just counting any words I do, whether they even go toward a story or not.

I've participated in NaNoWriMo several times before and never once won it. That gets pretty discouraging. So this year I decided what I would do is just use NaNoWriMo as an excuse to increase my writing/typing to more than double what I normally do for 750 Words by aiming to write/type 50K words no matter what they are about. I'm using it as a productivity booster to incentivize me to get more writing and typing done and hopefully complete some of the many stories I've got partly written. I've got a whole series of stories set in my own original scifi world that are all part done. It would be great if this event pushes me to finish a few of them.

Re: Welcome to Rebellion! You are NOT a cheater.

My first year doing NaNoWriMo, 2010, I got 50K.
I "cheated" by using an outline that I'd developed some time before, but just never did anything with.
Ran out of story around 35,000 words and it felt reasonably tight.
Cue the word barf. By the time I hit 50k, I hated the story for having to add so much junk just for length.
Haven't opened the file since that December, I hated it that much!

This time around, I'm throwing Doctor Who fanfic at the page to see what sticks. I'll be surprised if I get 25,000 words, I got off to a late start and I'm not taking it seriously.
Really I just came for the forums - love the random weirdness of the Reference Desk!

I'd written 60 pages of a YA novel I've been planning for years, and I was stuck. Doing Nano this year has enabled me to add 73 more pages already (or 21,786 words so far), and it's only 11/11! If I'm a rebel, so be it! Last year I tried starting from scratch on a new novel and got about 10k words in and gave up (well, my laptop died too). This year is working out MUCH better, and maybe I'll finally get this novel written!! I'll be 40 in December, and it would be wonderful to have a first draft written before that milestone birthday!

I'm a serious rebel as well. I won't manage 50.000 words in story probably as I'm tight in time and most importantly, in writing hours, as I managed to get RSI when I did an amazing last sprint for the one time a finished nanowrimo in time (12.000 words in 6 hours on a netbook).
And I write a lot as schoolpapers, reflection reflection reflection. It starts to look more like a diary then as schoolwork, so I thought it would count. I'm still going to try and get my story on 50.000 words in time, but I don't think I'll manage, but this way. I write bigger reports for school than I would do for it otherwise. As more words is more wordcount.

Another rebel here, adding 50k to a WIP. I won Nano last year the traditional way, but was so unenthusiastic about the result I haven't opened the file since. However, I was completely excited about this year's idea when I started plotting it in October, I didn't want to let that creative energy go to waste just to abide by the rules that ultimately don't matter to anyone but myself- firmly placing myself in the Wild and Rebellious category. =)

This is my 6th NaNoWriMo but 1st as a rebel. I have to say, it's way way more difficult writing non-fiction under pressure than a novel, where the characters take over. Still, one has to do what one has to do - and I have a book to write. So I'm doing it through NaNo. I planned to 'cloak' it in novel format, in that I'd have an opening and closing few paragraphs, with the non-fiction in the middle - well most of it. But having read most of these messages, maybe that's not necessary.

Back to writing! keep up the good work folk!

I'm a rebel! Aside from regular writing, I've heavy!edited and drawn some comic pages. editing was worth 1/2 of words edited, page of comic book, finished, was worth full day of writing for me ;) On the other hand, it was split pretty darn even between writing and editing old writing.

Congrats to all you heavy-hitters who made your word count, and to those who worked hard at writing. Travel and company in the holidays decimated my intentions but I still had a blast and I have more done on my writing text than I had when i started Nanowrimo so I'm thrilled. See you all next year!

Hi! I joined Nanowrimo just before November, downloaded Scrivener, but then excuses and Christmas happened at work...and my Scrivener has expired. I read that the developer says a nanowrimo REBEL can pass on the 50% discount. Would anyone be willing to do this for me? I still have hopes of starting a novel...

Thanks,

Hullo, rebels! I wrote little snippets of my novel, mostly last year, most of them less than 200 words and I plan to rewrite them all, but as I have actually touched my novel it's technically not from scratch. I'm basically doing NaNo as an excuse to get as much of my novel done as possible before I go to university next year, so....
Anyway, as I have written a little bit I'm joining the rebel ranks :D

Woohoo! A place for me! :D I don't know if I'll post much on the NaNo forums (Because when I'm all NaNo'd up, I'm usually busy writing!) I'm going to be doing a snarky non-fiction book. I managed to finish my story last year but was only using the time to generate ideas for my webcomic. This year I actually want to make a book that I can edit and refine for at least another year. So glad to see other people are also doing non-fiction and other such things!

I just discovered I'm a rebel and I'm totally embracing it. This is my first NaNoWriMo. I know there's no way I'd reach 50K in one go so I'm working on a non-fiction short piece as well as two short stories. I was just using NaNo as incentive. I wasn't going to validate but now, that I learned that others are doing this, I just might. My word count is a combo of 2 right now, I'll be adding the third later. I can't focus on one work I have to have several going my plot bunnies won't leave me alone, they're tenacious little things. Thanks for giving us a spot and letting us know were not alone.

Before that, I was wishing I'd never signed up, since the only writings I have done are journals, for the past (ahem...) 20+ years or so. I've never written fiction; in fact, I've always thought writing a novel was somewhat of a miraculous feat!

I would validate if I felt I've done at least as much work as if I had done it by the book. 50 000 words of original nonfiction or short stories, 50000 additional words to a WIP are clear cases...

I was rebelling during camp by revising and continuing last year's nano. It was not near a "win" anyway - I tried to estimate how much new text that revision would have corresponded to, and was somewhere under 20000 in the end, but if I had had more time and energy to put on that I really would have had a dilemma: how much of the revised work I could have counted... The added text was naturally a clear case.

First year for me, but I'm going to do the same type of rebel-writing that you are; in other words, whatever ends up on the page! I, too, have procrastinated starting a blog. I find myself composing imaginary blog posts in my head, but I never seem to get around to setting up the dang blog! Ugh! Maybe I can write a bunch of blog posts as part of my 50,000 words, then plug them into my future blog. I have a feeling that once I finish this experience, I will have alot more confidence, and much less perfectionism!

Thanks, that does indeed interest me and I will search for that group. I would imagine, though, that such a group is more geared toward posting on a blog each day for 30 days??? Whereas my goal is to come up with a massive amount of raw material that I can then thoughtfully edit down to be posted in the following months. So I view the Nano philosophy of "just get something down on paper and worry about edits later" to fit very nicely with my goals.

Yay, good to be back among the Rebels! Have already posted my bad on my site (thanks, Pax!).

NaNoWriMo is always at a bad time for me because of a week long conference right in the middle. This time, I'll be out of town for about 10 days and will likely not get in much writing during that time.

BUT I'm going to aim to work as much as I can on my novel during NaNoWriMo month!

Debbie

Back from Tai Chi class, where we learned a movement called Cloud Hands. So now I'm about to start Day Two writing, and I'm visualizing this book as a cloud I'm holding between the palms of my hands. Can I carry it forward to my modest goal, 260 words? Uh, okay, that's not working. Let's just open up Scrivener and get to work!

I hear you. That's why we're Nano Rebels: we do what we can and do what we must. Two weeks ago I was slammed, really slammed and didn't do any Nano writing for several days. A friend asked me for my chicken soup recipe, so I wrote a little blog around that and counted the words for my Nano project, which is a textbook on fiction writing. Now I just have to figure out a way to include the recipe in my book on writing....

In case you don't have time for turkey this week and will settle for soup--or you want to make soup from the left-overs--here's my California version: http://louellanelson.wordpress.com/

Thanks,

Karen

Karen, while no one can do this here in this forum, if you head up to the Life After NaNoWriMo forum, you can find a thread stickied at the top there for people to give their unneeded codes away. Just contact one of those people privately if they should offer, and do not post in that thread asking. :)
