Actual soundtracks?

Does anyone write with (or just listen to) soundtracks from movies and TV shows? Sometimes I just listen through random albums but other times I listen to nothing but soundtracks for a long while (even if I end up making my characters sound like pirates or the Doctor for sudden chunks of my story). I especially like - as I'm sure you couldn't guess - Doctor Who's, Inception's, and Pirates of the Caribbean's. Anyone else use them for creating certain moods in your writing? Good ones you'd like to share? (I can upload all of the ones I've mentioned.) Go ahead!

I am super into soundtracks, mostly from movies and video games. I have a giant 700+ song playlist that is just fantasy-style music (which I primarily use when we play D&D). Right now I seem to really be into Hans Zimmer's stuffs, with a dash here and there of Dragon Age and Portal 2. I do find that the Conan the Barbarian (the original one, not the new one) soundtrack is great for suspenseful scenes, especially if it has something to do with spying or hiding. :)

Soundtracks are gonna be the majority of my music for the month (with some rock, because I'm writing teenagers, haha); I use Pirates of the Carribean 3, Deathly Hallows part 2, X-Men: First Class, and Doctor Who. I feel like I'm missing something though...but I'm hoping based on those my novel turns out pretty epic. :D

For general writing, I love listening to Moby, both enjoyable to listen to, and the story behind the lyrics are always so deep.
For the one I'm going to do though, since it's about parallel universes and sci-fi stuff, I think I'm going to listen to the soundtrack of that point-and-click game, Machinarium.

Here's one of my favorites: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ar1iQGAyWNM

The rest of my playlist is composed of songs from various other artists that seem to fit the feeling.

Oh, I love Hans Zimmer! It seems like he turns out to be the composer of beautiful soundtracks really often.
Is the First Class one good? I don't seem to have noticed the music (even though I watched it twice). I love the Who soundtracks but I get distracted by thinking about the episodes the music is from all the time, haha. I bet it will, that's a lot of great setting :D

Hi Alice! I adore your icon. That's my favourite Doctor Who episode. :D

Lately I've been listening to a bunch of versions of "I Am the Doctor." My favourite is the Proms one. I also second Midnight_indigo about XMFC. That's my favourite soundtrack at the moment.

I also really like The Moulin Rouge! soundtracks. My favourite songs are "Your Song," "El Tango De Roxanne," "The Show Must Go On," and my extra special favourite is "Bolero." That's an amazing track.

I also really dig The Heroes CD that Wendy and Lisa put out. Some excellent music on that. Finally, I'll recommend the first Transformers CD.

Hey!

I generally listen to the three Transformers Soundtracks when writing. I haven't done a nano before but that shall be my main music. Other than that I listen to a bit of Skillet, Corrs or Bruce Springsteen depending on what I am writing. Occasionally I'll listen to different war tribute songs if that is where my story is heading.

MUSICALS.

I have a playlist on my laptop (which i recently bought speakers for XD) which is literally just songs from musicals - both stage musicals like Rent, Seussical, Jekyll & Hyde etc, and movie musicals like Reefer Madness.

Showtunes just have so much character to them. I find them inspiring because each song tells part of a story, in lyrics as well as tune.

Right now I may be on a bit of a Prince of Egypt kick (according to last.fm, I have listened to little else for three or four days), but I frequently turn to Lord of the Rings, Sherlock Holmes, How to Train Your Dragon, Pan's Labyrinth, Les Miserables, anything at all by Ennio Morricone (and by proxy, the soundtrack to Tarantino's films), Tales of Symphonia, Shadow of the Colossus, Hunchback of Notre Dame, and probably dozens of others. Most of it is from movies, musicals, and video games, but I do have the theme song to just about every show I've ever seen, as well.

Also the Lord of the Rings OST, especially Into the West. Then we have the Fairy Tail OSTs 1-3 and Death Note. I still need some soundtracks for the fighting scenes, so I'll have to look up some new ones.

Re: Actual soundtracks?

I find music with lyrics very distracting while I'm trying to write and classical music really needs to be listened to, not just played in the background so, for me, soundtracks are almost the only option.
On the brigter side, this year I'm doing fantasy, so it isn't really that hard to find bucketloads of inspiring pieces. In addition to everything already mentioned (Inception=love), I can whole-heartedly recommend the oh-so-otherwordly soundtrack to the document 'In the Shadow of the Moon' (composed by Philip Sheppard, yay for cellists!), and of course anything by Tan Dun (Hero, anyone?).
And thank you for all who suggested game soundtracks - some movie soundtracks are in my mind so intertwined with the movie itself that it's hard to listen to them while trying to be original. I've never played Final Fantasy, but the orchestral version of 'A Man with a Machine Gun' is just _perfect_ for my MC.

Oh yeah. I love film scores! But I tend towards dark, atmospheric scores rather than big, epic scores. Pretty much anything by Paul Haslinger (Underworld franchise) and Charlie Clouser (Saw franchise). I'm not a huge Hans Zimmer fan, but I adore the Inception score. And the Harry Potter film scores - particularly the later ones by Nicholas Hooper and Alexandre Desplat - are incredible.

I'm writing a vampire novel this year, so I'll be listening to a lot from Underworld and other various horror films. And possibly some video game soundtracks (think Resident Evil) if I can find them.

Re: Actual soundtracks?

Soundtracks are my favourite things. Ever. seriously, I love them. This is my first year doing NaNo, but some of my favourites range from tv shows (even some I no longer watch!) to films, with a smattering of video games. Depending on what specifically I'm aiming for, one of my favourite composers is Bear McCreary (he did the music for Battlestar Galactica which I haven't seen in ages). Dario Marianelli's Atonement and Pride & Prejudice soundtrack is also about eighty shades of amazing.

Another one that is heavily dependent on what I'm writing is Jesper Kyd's Assassin's Creed soundtracks, although I must admit I don't play the games. Doctor Who also shows up, but I find that unfortunately my favourite pieces of Murray Gold's have me focusing more on the theme (“I Am The Doctor” and “The Face of Boe” are especially notable examples), so he doesn't make much of an appearance on my instrumental playlists.

Also, while not actually technically soundtracks, certain pieces of classical music (mostly pieces that aren't overly familiar to me to the point where I focus more on the music than on the writing) can be very effective for the same purpose. (A really great example, though, of classical music meeting soundtracks can be found in Clint Mansell's reworking of Tchaikovsky for Black Swan. Also a fantastic composer!)

Now, of course, I'm babbling, but I just happened across this thread and I love music (especially soundtrack music) way too much not to speak up.

Death Note has some beautiful tracks, but I never listened to it all that much, and I haven't watched LotR or Fairy Tail (though I'm reading both). As for fighting, haha, how do you feel about Naruto? Bleach?
The soundtrack to the recent 'Thor' film, by Patrick Doyle. It's one of the things I noticed about the film other than the general wonderful-ness. Just so...epic, and heroic, and yet soft and lovely. I hear a tiny snatch of this soundtrack and my mind just whisks away far away and long ago.

His 'Sense and Sensibility' is also one of the most wonderful soundtracks ever for gentle Regency love stories and his 'Henry V' is dramatic and full of choral grandeur.

For swashbuckling, obviously PotC, but also 'The Man in the Iron Mask' soundtrack, the earliest soundtrack I ever bought.

For disturbing horror, the 'Silent Hill' and 'Bioshock' instrumental soundtracks, maybe with 'The Wolfman' soundtrack (yes, the film was rubbish, the soundtrack's good) and 'Bram Stoker's Dracula' for more gothic horror, and the 'American McGee's Alice' and 'Alice: Madness Returns' for slightly less even but more tonally distinct tracks.

For heroic awesomeness, on top of 'Thor', I'd add 'Dog Soldiers' (wonderful, epic) and any of the 'Halo' soundtracks.

This year, I'll be listening to a whole lot of James Newton Howard (I LOVE his music!). Most particularly, I'll be listening to Water for Elephants. It's such a stunning score and so wonderful to write to!
However, my old standby is my Hans Zimmer collection. When you combine the fact that he's a fantastic composer with the fact that he's covered so many genres in his career, you get an incredible musical library that gives you a song to listen to no matter what kind of a scene you're writing!

Some of my favorite music to listen to are movie soundtracks. I have every Harry Potter soundtrack, and intend on listening to them for the majority of my time writing. I also have The Lion King, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast and the Alias soundtracks on standby for when I'm stuck in a writer's block.

I've also been thinking of compiling my John Williams collection for this year's novel writing as well. I'm still debating that one, however.

I don't know if it's particularly similar to my novel this year, but there are so many different ways that people can identify with any of it, even if their story isn't similar to that in the musical.

Soundtracks are among my favourite kind of music, I think it makes up for a good third of my library on iTunes. The ones I prefer are probably the Battlestar Galactica and Doctor Who ones, especially Roslin and Adama for the former and The Mad Man with a Box for the latter. I also love the Game of Thrones main theme.

As for movies, I especially like Carter Burwell for In Bruges and Howard Shore or The Lord of the Rings but Dario Marianelli is equally awesome with Atonement and Pride and Prejudice. Hanna has an excellent soundtrack as well, and a bit more "modern" one so it's a good change of pace from more classical/slow soundtracks.

I also really love videogame soundtracks, despite how odd that might seem--Dragon Age 2 has a gorgeous soundtrack. Other favorites of mine are Avatar: The Last Airbender (the tv show, not the movie), Black Swan, Harry Potter, Mass Effect, and Lost.

The soundtrack of the French movie Amelie is wonderful. I love accordion music, and all my stories end up being set in fantastic European cities no matter what I do -.- Then there's anything, absolutely anything by Yuki Kajiura, and the occasional Final Fantasy soundtrack as well. (I have nerdy tastes...) And if ballet music counts, I love Tchaikovsky. And heck, all that Mozart I listen to could be considered the soundtrack for Amadeus.

Soundtracks!!

I listen to em more than I do anything else, by a fair margin. I'd say at least 60-70% or so of all the music I have is a soundtrack from a movie, game, show, or anime. This is year-round, but it does come in handy for Nano, since I have a ready supply of suitably appropriate music to make playlists themed around whatever I'm writing about in a given year, haha.

Hans Zimmer is generally just "good" to me, but the Inception score in particular is fantastic. Jeremy Soule has done some excellent high-fantasy music in the Elder Scrolls games. The OST from Puella Magi Madoka Magica has some really great haunting, otherworldy sounding stuff, and there are always at least a couple of tracks from the Star Ocean 3 OST in most of my playlists. To name a few. ^^ ;

Oh, also game music remixes! OC Remix and affiliated artists; if anyone is a fan of Metroid (or really, of amazing, distinctly sci-fi music in general, even if you've never played any of the games in the series), check out "Harmony of a Hunter." REALLY great stuff.

As someone else mentioned, Dario Marianelli's body of work is some of the best music to write too. However, a female composer I adore is Lesley Barber, who did my all time favorite Jane Austen movie soundtrack- "Mansfield Park". The music shifts from being light and playful to very emotional and almost simplistic in a very beautiful manner. I'm also a sucker for the "Ever After" OST by George Fenton. Fenton also did the music for the movie versions of "The History Boys" and "The Crucible".

As far as single songs, "Gabriel's Oboe" by Ennio Morricone (which was the main theme for the movie "The Mission") is just breathtaking. The first time I heard it my father was actually using it for a bride to walk down the aisle to. I have the version that Yo-Yo Ma did, and it's my phone's ring tone.

I usually end up writing like the film or show that the soundtrack is coming from if I listen to them while writing, I noticed this while doing last year's entry to Yann Tiersen's Le Fabuleux Destin D'Amélie Poulain. I love them otherwise though!

Anything Ramin Djawadi does is gold to me. The Game of Thrones soundtrack is my personal favorite.

I'm also a fan of the soundtracks for Thor, X-Men: First Class, Dead Silence, The Hills Have Eyes, Iron Man (more Djawadi <3), a couple of tracks off of My Bloody Valentine 3D... the Supernatural series soundtrack is pretty good as well. I also love the PotC soundtracks, but currently don't have that. I probably should get on with fixing this problem.

...ahahaa as I go to post this, a track from PotC2 came on Pandora. Clearly this is a hint. xD

Re: Actual soundtracks?

I love soundtracks!!
I must confess my favourite composer was John Williams (I'm a huge Star Wars and Indiana Jones fan) but I have to admit that James Newton Howard right now has very differetn soundtracks. I mean, there are some composers which works could sound very similar. But for me J.N. Howard is able to re-invent himself in every score he does. I love from hom The Signs and The Village.
I know Hans Zimmer is very good, but their scores sounde very similar to me (all full with techno-drums :D), but has some very brilliant like Inception, Sherlock Holmes, Gladiator...
Some of you have mentioned Thor from Patrick Doyle (wonderful), Michael Giacchino (I love the Super 8 theme) and X-Men First Class. Very very good soundtracks.
By the way, Thomas Newman is good, and his scores are very smooth (all I've heard): The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, Wall-E, American Beauty, The Horse Whisperer...
Oh, @Captain Lonewolf, yes, Narnia soundtracks from Harry Gregson-Williams are nice. And from him too, try Kingdom of Heaven and Prince of Persia.

I love soundtracks too, and Pirates of the Caribbean, Lord of the Rings and Interview with a Vampire are my top movie ones.

I see that A LOT of you like the Hans Zimmer stuff, which is really good. However, if you want something that steps up in action and speed, E.S. Posthummus is amazing, and for something even more EPIC, Two Steps From Hell is the best! It is very much worth it and this music will give you energy to last for days if not weeks. XD

About 75% of all the music I listen to is from soundtracks. I am- as I can see most people here are- Hans Zimmer fanatic. I especially love the Sherlock Holmes soundtrack (always listen to forever) and Inception soundtrack. I also listen to a ridiculous amount of Doctor Who and Torchwood soundtrack music. Oh, and I like Clint Mansell a lot.

I need to get Pirates of the Caribbean and Transformers as well.
