"My Immortal" by Evanescence and "24" by Jem. I imagine the Evanescence song as a conversation between my two MCs. One of them (Yana) finds the other (Alyssa) on the floor at the beginning of the novel with her wrists slit. So when the song says "When you cried, I'd wipe away all of your tears / When you'd scream, I'd fight away all of your fears / And I held your hand through all of these years / But you still have all of me," I imagine that as Yana's words. When the song says "I'm so tired of being here, suppressed by all my childish fears / And if you have to leave, I wish that you would just leave / These wounds won't seem to heal, this pain is just too real / There's just too much that time cannot erase" I imagine those as Alyssa's words. And the other lyrics are a duet, because by the end of the novel, Yana's state of mind is almost indistinguishable from Alyssa's at the beginning of the novel. As for "24," I heard it on Pandora after I thought of the ending of my novel, and it took my breath away how perfect it was, because it's a countdown to a moment when the singer knows she's going to die, and that's exactly what happens in the end. The "dangerous minds" in this case are both the antagonist/anti-hero and her own brother, the MMC. BP points for simply being epic! When they reach the moon, she's literally reminded of that song. And even after they leave, it still brings back memories, of a planet of gray and black and white, of a world of death that's oddly alive. Music really affects her. She's very artistic and dramatic, and loves writing her own songs as well, and though the lyrics are depressing and are often in about 4 languages per song, the tune is strange and alien and oddly beautiful, kind of like Exogenesis Symphony. Lost but serene, dramatic but graceful. And, just like ES, all her songs have a meaning hidden within, some obvious, some carefully camouflaged. (That's how you spell it right?) I still love that song and it always makes me think of my novel, but the story has changed quite a bit and some of the lyrics don't really fit with the story any more. I recently listened to "The Light &amp; The Glass" by Coheed and Cambria and as I listened to the lyrics I was just like "asdfghjkl this is perfect." I think it's becoming my new theme song for this story.
