STEP RIGHT UP ALL YOU MUSIC LOVING NANOERS!! It’s that time of year again. I’m LaMishia (thelonephotographer) an M.L. from Virginia and I’m seizing the reigns of CD SWAP again this year. So let’s get it started. WHAT’S NEW! … THE CD SWAP BLACK LIST That’s right ladies and gentleman. We’ve been doing this for a while now and EVERYONE should know by now, if you sign up and don’t send your CD’s, you WILL be reported and this year officially BLACKLISTED from swap. THIS WILL BE YOUR ONLY WARNING- If you don’t have the TIME to burn 3 cd’s or the MONEY to mail them out, PLEASE DON’T SIGN UP TO DO THIS. If you didn’t receive a CD from a swap mate last year, send the name and info of that individual to me at nanocdswap@yahoo.com with BLACK LIST in the subject line. Those who sign up this year will be checked against the black list before being paired with a new group. NOW THAT WE’VE GOTTEN THAT OUT OF THE WAY…ON TO THE FUN PART Here's how CD Swap works: After the sign up period, you will be put in a group with three other Swap Buddies. You will then receive an e-mail from me telling you the names and addresses of the people in your group. You burn 3 identical music CDs and mail them to your swap mates. In return, you should then receive three CDs from the other three people in your group. SIMPLE RIGHT? WHAT I NEED FROM YOU: Copy & Paste the following info in an email to: nanocdswap@yahoo.com Name: Street Address: City, State, Zip: CD Type: Mailing Preference: Number of Groups: Email Address: Nano Name: SEE BELOW FOR DEFINITION OF THE ABOVE CD Type:DATA (capability of holding 100+ songs that you then download on to your computer) OR MUSIC ( holds @ 18 songs and playable in most cd players) Mailing Preference: North America Only (U.S. & Canada) OR All (this includes international countries) Number of Groups: One swap group OR Two swap groups (be aware that if you have two swap groups that means you’ll be sending out 6 cds) if you don’t specify you will be placed in one group. NOTE: Please be sure to put your Nano Nickname & e-mail on the CD you mail to your swap buddy. People got several CD’s last year and didn’t have a clue who had sent them. So please put some kind of identifier so that we can make sure everyone received a CD from everyone they were supposed to! It will definitely not be easy-I have a LOT to choose from and very eclectic music tastes. I'm so excited to see what kind of music I get in return, too! This is only my second year doing NaNo and my first time doing the CD swap, so I'm really looking forward to this.

This is really cool. How cool? Amazingly cool. So cool my first post is in this thread and it might even be my last even though there's more to NaNoWriMo than just jamming. But that's half the fun! OI've signed up, new adress this year but I still love this thing. One thought maybe people should get one chance to explain themselves, because what if there's a postal strike or for some other reason they send it and it doesn't get there (I had someone send me goods from canada and she sent them but they never arrived. She was very nice and gave me free goods next time, but it wasn't really her fault). Maybe if we all email you when they've been sent you can take a record and check peoples complaints against that. No email and no cd = automatic blackist. Email and Cd= chance to explain self first?

Gahhh I want to do this so badly! I have a quick little question though: I'm doing two novels, and I would fully intend to send out 2 CDs to each person. Is this acceptable? I don't expect multiple CDs in return - I just want to send out both soundtracks!

My CD is 71 minutes long. I've stuffed it full of everything even semi-appropriate to my original playlist, to the point where I'm considering adding Tune Ups from "Rent" (20 second songs that say things like "Close on Roger; his girlfriend left a note saying 'we've got AIDS' before slitting her wrists in the bathroom"). Can I say 'close enough' or must I pack it full?

My CDs are already finished. I worked hard on the playlist and a friend helped me a bit with the song order (but of course the song desicions were all mine :D) and I'm really happy about the outcome. The desicion of the songs took me quite some time, I choose 17 songs and have a totalplaytime of 67 minutes and 28 seconds. I hope that the three who will get my CDs like the songs, I'll send the music away soon because it takes some time to ship internationally. Around next week, so they can get the CDs just right in time for the NaNoWriMo!

I found an easy way to automatically generate a detailed tracklist: 1. Download and install MediaMonkey if you don't have it already, which you should, 'cause it's pretty neat. It's also Windows only, sorry. 2. Add your playlist to MediaMonkey's library. The details of this will vary, but the easiest way is just to drag all the files onto an open MediaMonkey window. 3. Make sure your tracks are in the order you want. If they're not, click and drag to move them around until you're happy. 4. Select all the tracks. 5. Click the "File" thingy in the upper left and select "Create Reports"->"File List (HTML)". 6. Choose a place to save the file and a name for it. You should get a nice little web page, with separate columns for Title, Artist, Genre, and so on. You can then print it or, if you're sending a data CD, stick it on the CD. I'm sure there are other, easier ways to do this, but it worked pretty well for me.

Just tried to email my info in and Gmail says, "Technical details of permanent failure: Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. The error that the other server returned was: 535 535 Authentication failure (SMTP AUTH failed with the remote server) (state 8)." Advice? Thanks! mC

I'm just starting to burn my CD's and was wondering how many songs is everyone putting on? roughly.. I recieved my first CD today with 115 songs... which makes my 19 songs look kinda silly..how many is everyone else putting on?

I did a standard music CD. iTunes is happiest when I do that, so I haven't experimented much with other ways. I sent my E mail in a couple days ago. Can't wait to get the information on who to send it to.

-_-;; So... Due to a financial thing going on, I wasn't able to get jewel cases for my CD's... But when I started asking around at school, most people said that it should be fine, as long as there was nothing else in the I was sending them with, so I should just be able to send them as is, so they'd get there in time for Nov 1st. Well.... Apparently that didn't work out so well. :/ So, if you're one of my swap partners, and got a scratched up CD, I'm really, really sorry about that... I can re-burn the CD's, and send them again, but not until after November 1st. If you're one of my swaps, (and I don't know your usernames, so I can't PM you), and you'd like me to re-burn the CD, please just let me know, and I will do it as soon as I can. I'm really sorry about all that. ;_;

Just wanted to say that this is an awesome idea. I can't afford the postage and wish it could be done digitally (I make mixes with art and share them at livejournal, and find the best writing music I never would have thought of through other people's mixes) but maybe someday I'll be able to participate. (I did check out the music share thread which is also lovely, but not the same as having somebody mix up music I may never have heard before. C'est la vie.) Anyhow, thanks for bringing this back every year!

Just a little Question: What kind of Music ist to swap? I mean, it´s illegal in Germany to burn a CD with copyrighted Material and send it with post to someone you don´t even know. You can get a really big bill from a Lawyer or even get arrested for up to 5 Years ... So, are you sending your own selfmade music, or just some downloaded music/copyrighted material? I´d love to participate, but i´m a little afraid of getting inn trouble, if the Letter/Parcel is opened by customs duty/Zoll..

I want to sign up for this but there is no way that if I join the international group (can't join the n.america group because i am not from there) that the cds will get to their destination on time. Sending cds over the internet sounds like a good idea though i am thinking there may be copyright issues.

Having a country at the end of your address for the people that are doing international swaps is helpful. Google search came in handy figuring the countries using the postcodes.

Gotta figure out what ma did with the envelopes either that or try and get a chance to stop and pick up a few today or tomorrow... I had to sit and convert a few to an mp3 format since I had them on my system in a format the program I use to burn doesn't read, so that was fun...XD But I do hope when those of my NaNo'ers get mine, I do hope they enjoy...:)

I can totally understand how Rob from High Fidelity agonized over his mixes, but mine are done & I sent them off today. Hopefully they'll survive the transit in their bubble envelopes and cases.

I've gotten three of my six so far and loved them all. I think the highlight of this was totally seeing a different Regina Spektor song on each of the mixes I received since I put her on the one I mailed out as well. I wish I would have included little notes about the music I picked like some of my swap mates did. I suppose I'll have to get a headstart on the mix next year instead of throwing it together last minute.

Post Issues! Hi, I'm putting my CDs in the post a few days late. My mailbox receives, but does not allow me to send mail, so I have to make a trip to the post office to send anything. I could not make it on Friday, and I arrived 2 minutes after they closed today. I have my CDs ready to go in envelopes and addressed, but they will not be sent until Monday. I apologize greatly for the inconvenience to my swap group, but I promise they are on their way!

Still waiting for two out of three :( i know overseas can take some time but i passed 50k yesterday....i hope i didn't get in a groups of people who do not ship....still keeping my hopes up ... I shipped mine on november 3 rd and i shipped a couple of other things to the US way later but they already arrived, so the mail is working fine, everything arrived within a week. Keeping my fingers crossed and checking my mail box everyday.

Of course this will vary wherever you are but perhaps this will give you an idea: I shipped from Virginia to Idaho, New Jersey, Colorado and Alabama and it cost $1.77 each. I also had an international group where i shipped to Germany & Ireland and it cost $3.46 each So shipping internationally is roughly double what it costs to ship in the states.

Rebel, it depends on your cd type. please read the directions and decide which cd type you want. could be a normal 18 track playable cd. or a data one with a whole heck of a lot more.

here's how i do it. i have windows xp, i think and under the accessories i use a program that came with the computer called SNIPPING TOOL....its the equivalent of screen capture. while i have the cd open in windows media player and it shows all the songs and the artists, i use the snipping tool to take a Jpeg picture of it and then print out that image and include it in the cd. It saves me from re-typing the whole thing.

hi Safria, this is completely acceptable if someone has a problem that is beyond their control. however i would expect people to have some common sense and to just write and say there is an issue. but what we've typically experienced is people not letting anyone know and then i have frustrated swappers contacting me because they didnt get cd's. so the bottom line is, let your swap mate or myself know why you havent sent a cd. but i dont have time to track them down and find out why.

do not assume this! i believe we had issues last year with people getting mp4 files from itunes playlists and having them be unplayable until a converter was found. please make sure your files are MP3 so that they are playable for all.

First, double and triple check that you are absolutely certain you are using the correct email address; especially the part after the @ sign. If you got the address right and it still isn't working, it's a problem between Gmail and Yahoo; nothing you can do about it but try again later.

I mailed mine in paper sleeves, and wrapped them in printing paper. I mailed them parcel post, so they do not have to go through a machine. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT, OR THEY WILL SHATTER! It cost $1.71 for two to Alabama, and $1.72 to England. Go figure.

Have you ever actually heard of someone being caught/punished for this? They don't usually check the content of CDs - I don't think they'd be allowed to without good cause (but if you want to be on the safe side, maybe send the track list as an email and don't put anything on the CDs that indicates they contain music files.) AFAIK there's a huge difference in German law between giving someone a mixtape for free (it's not like they know whether you know the folks you're sending them to), and uploading something somewhere anyone could download it, or charging money for your mixtapes.

I had the same thought about the tracklist. I don't want it to be obvious that the disc contains music. Also, for a data cd I'm not sure I see the point anyway.

I did that - just make sure to ask your group if they don't mind getting DVDs instead. I'm fairly sure I'm recieving CDs though. You do get a lot on a data CD. o.o

music(audo) will fight 18-22 songs depending on how long the songs are. Data CD's can fit at least a hundred or more.

Shipping overseas can take quite some time, unfortunately. Last year some of my CDs from the states spent three weeks(!) on the road. We Germans tend to be spoiled by our super fast, there-the-next-day postal service :)

Oh Gosh....i hope not. I send stuff to the US quite often and it is usally there within a week and from the US to Germany its usually not that much longer. I only had a few things that took a bit longer. (I send a letter to china and it took about a month to get there) Well i guess i have to wait, but the anticipation is killing me ;)

I have mixed experiences with the states, but it's been a while since I sent stuff there regularly (when I moved back to Germany I sent a letter (airmail) and a 70 pound box (as cheap as possible) at the same time, and the package got there within a week while the letter took over two...) I got my first CD from the states on Wednesday, that one took about a week... we'll see (still waiting for three from the states as well. Apparently mail to/from Australia is (much) quicker xD )

I just got my first CD yesterday. I send mine on November 3rd and I was also kinda worried. The CD i got yesterday was sent on Nov. 14 and it took a week from the US which is totally normal.(it can take longer) Remember that the deadline for sending the CDs was on Nov.11 and it has only been a week and a half. Be Patient...i know its hard. I was really worried but then i came home yesterday and foung my first CD waiting for me... If you are still worried or do not want to wait, why don't you send your swap buddies an email and ask them about it. <3 But hey you'll get your CDs and you'll love them. If not I'll be your swapbuddy next year=)

Can we make sure people contact those folks first? Sometimes things get lost in the mail, sometimes shipping takes ages (I know one of my CDs just arrived a few days ago, and I'd sent it before the deadline. Haven't heard from any of my swap buddies in the US yet, so I'm afraid they might not have made it there yet)
