There's so much music out there that I just absolutely love, but I never find anyone else who has the slightest notion what I'm talking about! (And when I share, they usually don't really care anyway.) Soooooo....in my musical loneliness, thought I'd start a thread where people like me can tell everyone about all the great singers/groups we love!
Here are my favorites, tthat no one else seems to know:
The Gaslight Anthem The Horrible Crowes Fake Problems William Elliott Whitmore Larry and His Flask Old 97's The Black Keys (yes, more people seem to know them, but nobody I know!)
GASLIGHT ANTHEM. 8D Last year someone put '59 Sound on the NaNo music share accounts, and I downloaded it on a whim, then proceeded to go find as much of their music as I possibly could. Ever since I've adored them to death, but I can't get any of my friends to listen to them. Silly people. *shakes head* I'm glad to see another fan out there. :D
Yeah, I've failed to convert any family or friends yet, and I don't know why -- just like everyone on here, it's hard to understand why other people don't love what I love!
I can't say I've ever heard any of those before but I'm certainly liking them! The singer for the Horrible Crowes has a gorgeous voice, and I especially like William Elliott Whitmore. The song that I listened to had a beautiful melody and made me nostalgic. I really like when songs can evoke emotions like that.
Thank you for sharing, I've definitely gained some new favourites!
It's so awesome to see Larry and His Flask coming up everywhere. They're from my area, used to play shows with them and stuff. They put on such an awesome show.
Jimmie Spheeris. He was a Californian singer/songwriter in the 70s and early 80s. I found a record of his in my dad's collection when I was going through my "record phase" in 2004. He's just...he's amazing. Most beautiful music I've ever heard, and it just breaks my heart that he died so young (motorcycle accident). I've never met anyone IRL other than my dad who knows about him. His music is on iTunes though, I believe.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpJ3feEbSv4 - "I am the Mercury" (this is honestly my favorite song of ALL time)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y30P9OMZ4HY - "The Nest"
Empires. They're a Chicago-based band that I was directed to by somebody on a forum somewhere and fell madly in love with. Apparently they have a small following, though I haven't met anyone else (other than the person who recced them to me) who's even heard of them.
Ok, I didn't know them... and they've passed my unofficial 30-second "Can I stand your voice?" test, so I'll be listening a bit more. Thanks for posting!
Ohhh even when I listen to awesome "popular music", no one still knows what I'm talking about. Blah. :c But here's a few of my favorite bands that no one really knows about.
The River Empires. They're A M A Z I N G. It's cinematic folk/bluegrass! And their album(s) is based off of a script written by the lead singer, that starts from the epilogue going to the beginning. - http://theriverempires.bandcamp.com/
The Gloomcatcher. Same lead singer as the band above, a bit of a different, more classical sound. - http://thegloomcatcher.bandcamp.com/
Far-Less. They broke up some time ago but they had great lyrics and I loved their guitar solos. - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipwI_dfwnw0
I've just listened to all The River Empires stuff - you're right they are amazing!! Thanks you for introducing me to such a wonderful band!
Have you tried:
The Antlers - they are really incredibly, easily my favourite band to write to - a lot of their songs are based on the lead singers time working in a Hospice and it's incredibly emotional stuff.
Dry The River (my favourite band) - seen them live 3 times now and they are awesome, also gathering quite a big following now, do check out 'New Ceremony' it's such a tune!
Portugal The Man - only got into them recently but I'be been quickly converted to their music :)
Denkare. I assume they're decently popular in Japan, but hardly anyone knows them in America, and they have the stigma of mainly making music for erotic visual novels.
They have several styles, the most famous being a sort of power metal with soft vocals, but they also do softer, slower songs as well. I love the musical backing of all their songs, and I adore the singer's voice.
Here's a great example of their work: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTcjSxjpO4U
Also, Machinae Supremacy is a Swedish band that combines metal with chiptunes and lots of videogame references.
You are no longer alone Earthbound! I have three quarters of those on my writing playlist, plus Sirenia of course. It makes a nice contrast to Sylver & Milk Inc.
StuartH wrote: You are no longer alone Earthbound! I have three quarters of those on my writing playlist, plus Sirenia of course. It makes a nice contrast to Sylver & Milk Inc.
I love Sirenia here too. And Lacuna Coil is good too.
There's only one I don't know on that list, the rest I've been fans of since I was twelve :D But it's fun to introduce my older sister to these bands. She's absolutely obsessed with The Birthday Massacre at the moment.
Okay, I just checked out all of the stuff you had listed and it's amazing! I love music like this and it's so hard to find. How do you find this stuff? The only ones I knew about were Birthday Massacre and Within Temptation.
I really don't even remember, actually... xD Um, if you type in a certain band or genre thing in Pandora, awesome stuff usually comes up. Or if you're on YouTube, there's bands with similar genres to the song you're listening to. I honestly have no idea.
I've noticed a lot of my friends, internet and local, have no clue who Theory of a Deadman are. It makes me sad, because I'm in love with their music. Also, Evans Blue seems to be a hidden band that I magically stumbled upon.
I'm sure they have other fans. I mean, if it was just me, then they'd still be in the garage, playing shitty instruments. I just can't seem to find other fans.
A couple of the stations up here play Theory of a Deadman, but, still, very few of my fellow Vermonters know who they are. >;(. Kind of sad, really. They have some great songs. ~<3~.
Really? I thought TOAD was a lot more well known. There's even a PS2 game, Indigo Prophecy, that contains a whole bunch of their songs in it (there's a cool scene when you're in the MCs apartment and you get to play with his stereo and pick which TOAD song you want to hear).
I thought Theory of A Deadman was really popular. At least, it was here.
And I'm glad most of the bands/artists so far are actually bands I've never heard of. I remember seeing a thread where people would put "Neutral Milk Hotel" or "Vampire Weekend" as "not well known" and I'd just facepalm.
Omg, I'm a huge fan of Rise Against! Saw them live with Thrice (my fave <3) Gaslight Anthem and Alkaline Treo. Seeing them live again soon!! So excited :D
This thread is rather funny because I'm going through and saying "know them, know them..." For like 90% of the bands people have listed. :P
My one that people never know? The Receiving End of Sirens ... Since they don't really exist as a band anymore, not many people have heard of them and their entire newest album was released on youtube recently. If I think of others, I'll reply again...

RISE AGAINST. When you actually look for fans, you find some, but they're never as obsessed as I am...
Also, this J-rock band called Bump of Chicken. Apparently they're pretty popular over in Japan, but on this side of the world it's like my friend and I are the only two existing fans.
I love Bump of Chicken! But I'm in Japan and, yeah, hadn't really heard of them before coming here. I'm not really into a lot of Japanese artists, but they make really good music and I'd love to see them more popular internationally.
Totally different end of the spectrum (which means Techno and Trance):
Benya - totally underrated remixer and producer. His music is so beautiful and epic! Mat Bradshaw - the same. And he never even made a EP or something that I know of :( Jupiter Ace - so very underrated it's sad. The man is a god. Seriously. The Shamen - should get their act together and re-band RIGHT NOW!
Tiesto, Armin van Buuren or Deadmau5 are so overrated it's not even funny anymore. They are mediocre at best but they are everywhere and they give us Tranceheads a bad name :(
Or Greek music:
Why has no one outside of Greece or Cyprus ever heard of Sakis Rouvas, Despina Vandi, Anna Vissi or Konstantinous Christoforou or Giorgos Mazonakis? Wonderful music, beautiful language, EPIC!
And the only really underrated Metal group I can think of is Turisas. So much love! Well, and probably Aztra or Toccata Magna. Wondeful stuff, Folk/Pagan Metal of the Inca-variety (not that I'm sure they are Inca; they could also be Aymara or something like that). And Northern Kings! Given that their are the creme de la creme of Finnish Metal musicians and their music is very, very mainstream for Metal (they are only doing covers of pop songs) it's strange that they are so little known.
I could go on like this forever. OK, I admit, my mp3-folders are full of Weird Things.
I would say Homestuck, as it's popular online, but I can't find anybody reading it IRL. Otherwise some obscure videogame perhaps, like Disgaea, The World Ends With You or so...
Oh my god I'm obsessed with the World Ends With You music. I will literally sit there with my DS open just to listen to all of Neku's CDs... not to be a creeper or anything. I've heard Broken Clock by Homestuck and it's pretty good but nothing else yet
I did the same thing with my game. I made sure that I collected all the CDs and I just listened to it while not doing anything else for half an hour. I desperately want to buy it on iTunes, too bad I'm broke as of now.
BOY (they're Swedish or something, they have an album called Mutual Friends) Tegan and Sara Counting Crows Civil Twilight Decemberists (Some of their songs aren't so good, but ones like Rox in the Box and Shankill Butchers and okay)
People might know some of them, but not many people I know do
Where do you live?!?! My radio is strictly 'normal' music! I can't get in the car without hearing Bruno Mars and had to introduce a lot of my friends to Tegan and Sara!
Anna Nalick is well known, but how many people know about her second album? (Broken Dolls and Odds and Ends.)
Apparently she had massive problems getting Broken Doll out, left her label, and salvaged a few of her old songs (Shine, Broken Doll, Walk Away, and I'm not sure what else) There's supposed to be another one soonish.
I have two that I really like. Driftless Pony Club. They're a small Indie-ish band out of Chicago that I found on YouTube. I have never EVER met anyone who has ever heard of them IRL.
Closer Your Eyes. They are kind of bigger, but the only fans I actually know are me, my dad, and one of my friends from school. They're a hardcore band out of my hometown, Abilene, TX. The lead guitarist was actually my guitar teacher for awhile!

First matter of business: FRENCH THE LLAMA! Second matter of business: I like them too, but that might just be because I love Wheezy :) I have friends who like them, but only because I introduced DPC to them. Like any other DFTBA stuff? I love pretty much all of it :)
I've fallen in love with a ton of unsigned bands lately. There's Like The Stars from Point Pleasant, NJ, and Since Forever from Nashville, TN. They're both more of a pop sound. And for something darker and a little more rock, I love ViFolly from Eaton, OH.
Some of the bands that no one else seems to know about that I like are Trapt, OK Go, Thriving Ivory, Hedley (really popular in Canada but no one in the US ((where I live)) seems to know who they are), and Blue Foundation
I'm Canadian and love Hedley. Jacob(singer for those who don't know) was on Canadian Idol one year and I loved him! He didn't win but a few years later Hedley's first CD came out and they got famous. They are great.
I absolutely love Jeremy Messersmith. He's an Indie artist and offers all his albums for free (or donation if you like) on his website. Really great melodies and lyrics that tell stories. He is my favourite artist right now.

Ah, Trapt! <3 They're not popular in Australia, and you'd see flying pigs before they'd come on the radio. I heard them when I was listening to the Michigan radio station, Banana [insert channel number here].
Just click the "download audio" link, and you can download all their music for FREE. ALL OF IT. FREE. FREE FREE FREE FREE FREE SO DOWNLOAD IT NOW OR ELSE They're really good. Kind of unusual, I guess, but really really really good. I especially recommend Nighttime Sabbaticals.

EARSHOT!
Or, maybe I will keep them as my own little secret. =) I'm gonna marry Wil someday and have his babies. He just doesn't know it yet.
But, he's a great guy and they are an amazing band.
Everyone should check them out, right... NOW!
Re: Awesome music that no one else seems to know!
I haven't heard of any of them.

I'm pretty sure they were one of the bands in the cover contest Rolling Stone had. Think they made it to the top 8.

Oh, the Irony are awesome. They're just starting out, but I love their song Kingdoms :3
Re: Awesome music that no one else seems to know!
I'm always listening to music that nobody around here knows about.
Nightwish, Ayreon, Epica, Mortal Love, The Birthday Massacre, Arkona, Draconian, Theatre of Tragedy, Leaves' Eyes, After Forever, Therion, Elis, Eluveitie, Kamelot, Lacuna Coil, Opeth, The Gathering, Tristania, Within Temptation... so many.
Re: Awesome music that no one else seems to know!
You are no longer alone Earthbound! I have three quarters of those on my writing playlist, plus Sirenia of course. It makes a nice contrast to Sylver & Milk Inc.
Re: Awesome music that no one else seems to know!
I love Sirenia here too. And Lacuna Coil is good too.
Re: Awesome music that no one else seems to know!
Lol, I know like 90% of those bands and my friends do too! :D

Aha, lucky, nobody, and I'm being literal here, absolutely nobody including my friends know about any of these.

Yes! The Birthday Massacre :D
Re: Awesome music that no one else seems to know!
Major fan of Nightwish and minor fan of Within Temptation here. :)

Yeah I know almost all of these and have almost all of them. Theatre of Tragedy's best CD (Velvet Darkness They Fear) is on right now. :)
Re: Awesome music that no one else seems to know!
I thought everyone knew Nightwish and Withing Temptation and Lacuna Coil...or is that just my friends?
Re: Awesome music that no one else seems to know!
I LOVE ALL OF THESE. *cowers in fear of caps button*
Re: Awesome music that no one else seems to know!
Did you...did you just, like, steal my playlist? XD
Same. None of my friends know who any of these bands are. Attempts at converting the relatives have not really been successful. =P
Why does everyone I know like only pop music?
Re: Awesome music that no one else seems to know!
I listen to most of them - Lacuna Coil, Nightwish and Within Temptation seem to be very well known ones!

Apparently she had massive problems getting Broken Doll out, left her label, and salvaged a few of her old songs (Shine, Broken Doll, Walk Away, and I'm not sure what else) There's supposed to be another one soonish.
Re: Awesome music that no one else seems to know!
I'm been listening to a lot of Chris Ayer, his song Warmer is kind of the perfect song for my main character falling in love.
Re: Awesome music that no one else seems to know!

Re: Awesome music that no one else seems to know!
I've fallen in love with a ton of unsigned bands lately. There's Like The Stars from Point Pleasant, NJ, and Since Forever from Nashville, TN. They're both more of a pop sound. And for something darker and a little more rock, I love ViFolly from Eaton, OH.
Re: Awesome music that no one else seems to know!
Some of the bands that no one else seems to know about that I like are Trapt, OK Go, Thriving Ivory, Hedley (really popular in Canada but no one in the US ((where I live)) seems to know who they are), and Blue Foundation
Re: Awesome music that no one else seems to know!

Ah, Trapt! <3
They're not popular in Australia, and you'd see flying pigs before they'd come on the radio.
I heard them when I was listening to the Michigan radio station, Banana [insert channel number here].
Re: Awesome music that no one else seems to know!
I've heard some Blue Foundation. They're good.
Re: Awesome music that no one else seems to know!
I've listens to a few songs by OK Go. Can't say they're my favorite but I like the songs I've heard.

Rollerskate Skinny.
Maybe the most amazing sound I've ever heard.

They're really good. Kind of unusual, I guess, but really really really good. I especially recommend Nighttime Sabbaticals.
