Awesome music that no one else seems to know!

There's so much music out there that I just absolutely love, but I never find anyone else who has the slightest notion what I'm talking about! (And when I share, they usually don't really care anyway.) Soooooo....in my musical loneliness, thought I'd start a thread where people like me can tell everyone about all the great singers/groups we love!

Here are my favorites, tthat no one else seems to know:

The Gaslight Anthem
The Horrible Crowes
Fake Problems
William Elliott Whitmore
Larry and His Flask
Old 97's
The Black Keys (yes, more people seem to know them, but nobody I know!)

What about the rest of you?

Jimmie Spheeris. He was a Californian singer/songwriter in the 70s and early 80s. I found a record of his in my dad's collection when I was going through my "record phase" in 2004. He's just...he's amazing. Most beautiful music I've ever heard, and it just breaks my heart that he died so young (motorcycle accident). I've never met anyone IRL other than my dad who knows about him. His music is on iTunes though, I believe.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpJ3feEbSv4 - "I am the Mercury" (this is honestly my favorite song of ALL time)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y30P9OMZ4HY - "The Nest"

http://youtu.be/jTEASj0I3jw - "Blue Streets"

<a href="http://music.weareempires.com/album/howl" rel="nofollow">Empires</a>. They're a Chicago-based band that I was directed to by somebody on a forum somewhere and fell madly in love with. Apparently they have a small following, though I haven't met anyone else (other than the person who recced them to me) who's even heard of them.

Ohhh even when I listen to awesome "popular music", no one still knows what I'm talking about. Blah. :c
But here's a few of my favorite bands that no one really knows about.

The River Empires. They're A M A Z I N G. It's cinematic folk/bluegrass! And their album(s) is based off of a script written by the lead singer, that starts from the epilogue going to the beginning. - http://theriverempires.bandcamp.com/

The Gloomcatcher. Same lead singer as the band above, a bit of a different, more classical sound. - http://thegloomcatcher.bandcamp.com/

Far-Less. They broke up some time ago but they had great lyrics and I loved their guitar solos. - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipwI_dfwnw0

Denkare. I assume they're decently popular in Japan, but hardly anyone knows them in America, and they have the stigma of mainly making music for erotic visual novels.

They have several styles, the most famous being a sort of power metal with soft vocals, but they also do softer, slower songs as well. I love the musical backing of all their songs, and I adore the singer's voice.

Here's a great example of their work:

Also, Machinae Supremacy is a Swedish band that combines metal with chiptunes and lots of videogame references.

Also, Evans Blue seems to be a hidden band that I magically stumbled upon.

I'm sure they have other fans. I mean, if it was just me, then they'd still be in the garage, playing shitty instruments. I just can't seem to find other fans.

Re: Awesome music that no one else seems to know!

Totally different end of the spectrum (which means Techno and Trance):

Benya - totally underrated remixer and producer. His music is so beautiful and epic!
Mat Bradshaw - the same. And he never even made a EP or something that I know of :(
Jupiter Ace - so very underrated it's sad. The man is a god. Seriously.
The Shamen - should get their act together and re-band RIGHT NOW!

Tiesto, Armin van Buuren or Deadmau5 are so overrated it's not even funny anymore. They are mediocre at best but they are everywhere and they give us Tranceheads a bad name :(

Or Greek music:

Why has no one outside of Greece or Cyprus ever heard of Sakis Rouvas, Despina Vandi, Anna Vissi or Konstantinous Christoforou or Giorgos Mazonakis? Wonderful music, beautiful language, EPIC!

And the only really underrated Metal group I can think of is Turisas. So much love! Well, and probably Aztra or Toccata Magna. Wondeful stuff, Folk/Pagan Metal of the Inca-variety (not that I'm sure they are Inca; they could also be Aymara or something like that). And Northern Kings! Given that their are the creme de la creme of Finnish Metal musicians and their music is very, very mainstream for Metal (they are only doing covers of pop songs) it's strange that they are so little known.

I could go on like this forever. OK, I admit, my mp3-folders are full of Weird Things.

I went searching for indie music a couple years ago and this band popped up and I became completely obsessed with them. Look for 'Question Everything' on youtube it's soooo good! I have an acoustic version of it that I randomly came across that's even better, but I don't think it's on youtube.

My absolute favorite, could listen to them every day for the rest of my life, band is Billy Talent. Yes, I know they're immensely popular in other places, but where I'm at I have only found ONE person that's heard of them.

HRRNGH WHY DON'T MORE PEOPLE KNOW THE CLIENTELE.

They're an indie band, I guess, but their music has a lot of themes from 1960's rock and sounds very warm and fuzzy, for lack of a better term. So much love in that music and almost nobody's heard of them. It's not fair.

Go listen to them. Seriously. They're on YouTube. Are you still reading this?

Re: Awesome music that no one else seems to know!

I have so many obscure artists I adore, from celtic music to... well, I'm really not sure what genre they are.

First up is the band Albannach. They're a pipes and drums group from Scotland, with music like I'd never heard before. I discovered them playing at a Rennaissance Festival in Maryland and was blown away by their stunning live performance. They were so lively, so real, I felt like I was transported to another place as I sat there listening. They played three performances that day, and I sat through all of them, then bought all the music I could afford from them. This makes really great writing music, especially for fight scenes!

The Rogues have a similar story to Albannach, another Celtic-type group, though more of their songs feature lyrics than with Albannach. They're a bit more modern concerning their sound. Again, I first found them playing at the same RennFestival on another year.

And, one that a friend of mine just introduced me to a few weeks ago, Sabaton. I have no idea how to classify their music, except to call it "war music." Most of their songs deal with war, death and bloodshed, coupled with good lyrics and catchy tunes. I've had "The Price of a Mile" stuck in my head for days! I have no clue how popular or not this group is, but since I'd never heard of them before by buddy said, "Hey, go look these guys up," I figured I'd post 'em here. ^_^

I hope you people know that this thread has postponed my writing for at least an hour by influencing me to shove songs from these bands onto a grooveshark playlist so I can sample eveything :P but anyways, my current music of obsession (and no one ever knows the bands I'm listening to) are:
Imogen Heap
Everclear
Good Charlotte
Arctic Monkeys
Foo Fighters
The Veronicas
Most of these bands are old and the only one I know the specific genre to is Foo Fighters = rock

So many!

Mother Falcon - Classical-inspired semi-pop goodness. They have an EP, Still Life, on iTunes for something like $5. Well worth it.

Oh Land - She's new, but going places. Plenty of music videos on YouTube.

Dawn Landes - Alt-folk and wonderfully so. "Twilight" is my favorite (nothing to do with the books, of course :D)

I'll leave it there for now. I'll definitely be looking up as many of your suggestions as I can!

My personal favorite for action scenes is Globus. It's in the "epic" genre, and has lots of latin lyrics to orchestral themes to movie trailers and stuff like that. Odd, but it's really powerful music for that epic fight scene you're writing!

Hm, about some of my obsessions/loves:
Evaline &lt;== I saw them perform at a Dir en Grey/Apocalyptica concert and was floored by how amazing they are. You can find their songs on Youtube. I highly suggest their songs 'Hours', 'Patterned', and 'a protest in lines too thin to read'.

Margot &amp; the Nuclear So and So's &lt;== I dled their song 'Skeleton Key' at complete random one day and have been in love with them ever since. So far, I think I'm the only one who even knows about them (though they've been around for a bit now). xD

Oh Land &lt;== Just, yes. She's beautiful and her vocals are great. I definitely rec 'White Nights'.

Chevelle &lt;== They've been around for a long time now, but I still tend to feel like the only one who's ever heard of them, which is a shame since they are really great.

There's also two bands that I've very recently discovered but I'm absolutely in love with:

Foster The People
The Naked and the Famous

Ghost Voyage - An awesome Finnish prog/death/doom metal band that I hope will become more known in the years to come; they are only working on their debut album after all, so that many people can't have heard of them yet. But they're well worth getting to know.

Pressure Points - More Finnish goodness, in the form of progressive and perhaps death but definitely without the doom. They were supposed to release their second album this year but looks like there's some issues with it. Anyway, check out their previous one, 'Remorses to Remember'.

Eternal Deformity - Polish, this time! And I've no idea what genre to put them into, or well, subgenre, as they're definitely metal. They've released a few albums and are working on another one at the moment. I discovered them totally by accident a bit over a year ago when I met their singer at another band's gig and he gave me their CD. And I'm glad I did; they're great.

Leprous - Representing the Norwegian department! Well, not sure if it's exactly correct to say that "nobody" knows them, anymore, as they seem to be gaining fame very rapidly, but still. Another band that's difficult to put into any single subgenre so let's just go with progressive metal. Einar's voice is amazingly powerful and there's something very unique about their sound overall.

Re: Awesome music that no one else seems to know!

I'm going to mention a couple of bands that have been around for a while, but don't seem to get a lot of hype.

First off, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnMXoyUqzkw" rel="nofollow">Treat</a>. Swedish 80's hair metal band, definitely my playlist of choice when I'm writing something epic.

Second, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSxxolWQ10s" rel="nofollow">I Am Ghost</a>. This is an awesome Gothic Hard Rock band who also has a violinist who is just fantastic. For comparison, I'm a huge Rise Against fan and I've had I Am Ghost pop up on Pandora several times on my Rise Against station.

Third and last mention for the time being, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zouwHtoBZz4" rel="nofollow">Voltaire</a>. Very tongue-in-cheek Gothic soft rock. His songs tend to be both humorous and creepy, so it's great background music for any quirky villains that need that slightly disturbing edge.

I'll probably think of more later, but those are definitely the three least known artists that I adore, so hopefully some of you guys will too.

I listen to a ton of foreign music, which apparently is not popular among my peers (except for the obligatory Asian pop/rock--which I also like a great deal, incidentally, but it isn't the only foreign music I like). =P Yulia Savicheva, Kari Rueslåtten, Ruth Koleva, Agatsuma Hiromitsu... No recognition, ever. Of English-singing artists, the ones I have the most trouble finding fellow fans for (which is saying something, since I have numerous friends with music tastes as eclectic as mine) are Josh Woodward, Washington, Kings of Convenience, and Bella Ruse. And, of course, the endless bands/singers that my classmates inform me are "ancient" (read: more than a decade and a half old).

I will now waste my entire evening going through this thread looking for new music and squeeing at artists I recognize. :D

Dar Williams. Love her to teeny tiny bits and pieces. Folk-pop win timez. Favorite song probably "The Ocean", but I love everything she does.

Over the Rhine. Jazz-folk AMAZINGFULNESS. Favorite song is "Professional Daydreamer".

Rachael Yamagata. Go look up "I Want You". Do it. And then "Faster". And then "Accident".

A Fine Frenzy. SO PRETTY MUSIC PRETTYNESS "Rangers", "Minnow &amp; The Trout", "Electric Twist".

Imogen Heap. Everybody knows "Watcha Say" but nobody knows that isn't an original song. He borrowed the chorus from Imogen Heap's song "Hide and Seek". Look it up, it's AMAHZING

Default.
They're a Canadian rock band, and they have some of the best music I've ever heard.
Maybe it's their name that makes them hard to come by. It's not catchy, so if you were to hear it, you wouldn't remember it.

Don't get me started on this stuff, I operate in the underground music industry quite a lot (mostly Metal and Rock, but I dabble in any style of music that has artistic merit)

A bunch of bands for some people:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNwQ2UeV3ec

Really cool little band, this is one of the more aggressive songs on the disc, his voice may take some time to adjust to.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eghgAnlhPGw

Glassjaw are an incredibly emotional post hardcore band that continue to just wow people. Here's one of their earlier songs.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBPqjkle6U8

Dead Letter Circus are a really cool little band and I love this song. This video is also beautiful.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjW-j2PAv-I

Fair to Midland and Dead Letter Circus are currently touring across the US together at the moment and they are both really, really worth checking out. Some great proggy rock/metal but still accessible.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnLNXquIBVs

This album is basically one of the greatest albums of all time and inspired a phenomenal new wave of progressive experimental music. Such a gloriously weird album.

When it comes to writing stories though, I love music that tells stories of their own:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsJpy84ZiGk

Haken amazingly debuted last year with this album and just blew everyone in the progsphere away. The album tells a story of a couple who have a daughter who is born as a mermaid and is a really great and beautiful concept album.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dte3-sSkWic

Check out Steven WIlson's latest release "Grace For Drowning" the guy is a musical legend anyways (Porcupine Tree) but this new double album is one of the most beautiful records you're likely to hear...

I have 500gb of music... lol. So, I'll stop there, if there's any particular stuff people like I can always try and pull things out in a similar vein :)

Wow, lots of cool stuff to check out! I'm not a contrarian but I do find that most of the music I like is obscure, at least in America.

A few of my favorites:

The Bones - Punk band from Sweden that hearkens back to the days of The Ramones, the Sex Pistols, and Motorhead. None of this Blink 182/Green Day pop punk nonsense.

Diablo Swing Orchestra - CRAZY diverse band that incorporates all sorts of influences into what's been called avant-garde metal. Opera, flamenco, disco, jazz, classical, rock, Tin Pan Alley, Spaghetti Western, all rolled up into the soundtrack for a cabaret from Hell.

Miranda Sex Garden - They describe their music as "seductive garden of earthly delights, full of colour and chaos." It's a good description.

Nightwish - Very popular in Europe--they're celebrities in their home land of Finland--but very little known here in the U.S., except to metal heads. I would describe them as a Hans Zimmer score with guitars and vocals laid over it.

Okkervil River
Spoon
Andy Bull
Gregory Page
Kind Of Pluto
Split Seconds
The Basics
Husky
Chris Pickering
Darren Hanlon
Steve Poltz

Many of these bands/artists are Australian, and all are defintiely worth a listen. Also, if anyone here know who Kind Of Pluto are, you can have my first born child.

I know (think) Blur was a pretty big deal in England, but here in the U.S. it seems like very people know them, and they're brilliant. Portugal the Man is just awesome but no one seems to know them either :(

Fastball: Kinda old band and the ONE person I've found that even heard of them was almost as old as my mom apparently xD. Favorite song by them is "You're an Ocean"

The Rasmus: A few people have heard of them but not enough! They're broken up at this point so they're not making anymore music but they're still awesome. They do kinda dark music and favorite songs from them are currently "No Fear" and "Heart of Misery"

t.A.T.u. (or Tatu or T.A.T.U or T.A. T.U. depending on who you ask xD): Met one person who's obsessed with them (which is how I got into them) and one person who's heard of them and that's it. They're a duo from Russia and are (I believe) popular there but no one in US, Canada or Thailand seems to know (since I live in Thailand now but I used to live in the US right on the Canada border.) They are also broken up at this point but it was quite recently (in March I think?) Favorite song by them is "Friend or Foe"

Anyone?

Dude, Into It. Over It. and Jose Gonzalez and his band Junip is so incredibly amazing. Into It. Over It. is more of a rock and Jose Gonzalez is a soft acoustic type. Also, Of Monsters &amp; Men, Moscow Olympics, and Faded Paper Figures are amazing ear candy.

But if you want beautiful ambient music that honestly mainstream would never play on the radio (but is still incredibly beautifully heart-grabbing) start with "Paper Birds" by Parachutes (or just any of their songs) and then just look at any of the related videos. It will lead you to this beautiful world of beautiful music.

John Frusciante. (Most well known as a former guitarist of Red Hot Chili Peppers.)

I mean, Red Hot Chili Peppers is well known (at least I hope so) and probably a lot of people know Frusciante as their guitarist. But how many have really listened to his solo work? Not so many. And I love his solo work! And RHCP. You can find his fans and most of them are fanatic like me.

Only problem is that I can listen to his work in RHCP or his solo work because I get too distracted. Just loving the music too much. It makes me want to play my guitar,

Re: Awesome music that no one else seems to know!

Oh man, this thread is fantastic! My offerings are mostly local(ish) folk/singer-songwriter types.

<a href="http://www.paperboys.com/Paperboys/Home.html" rel="nofollow">The Paperboys</a> - Canadian band, sort of folk/rock/Celtic/Latin/jazz. Hard to define, but their songs are catchy and most are uptempo, so they're great to write to when you need that sort of thing.

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/franceyvideos" rel="nofollow">David Francey</a> - also Canadian. Mostly folk/rock, I guess. I first heard him when our college radio station played one of his songs and I just had to track down more.

<a href="http://www.caseyneill.org/" rel="nofollow">Casey Neill &amp; the Norway Rats</a> - from Portland. I heard them on <a href="http://kboo.fm/" rel="nofollow">KBOO</a> (which is incidentally a great station and available for online listening!)

<a href="http://heidimuller.com/discography.htm" rel="nofollow">Heidi Muller</a> - originally from the Pacific Northwest. Excellent folk musician. (If you scroll down on that page there are samples from some of her earliest albums.)

<a href="http://klezmatics.com/klezmer-music/" rel="nofollow">The Klezmatics</a> - My favorite band in the universe. They do mostly klezmer (Eastern European Jewish music) but put a modern spin on it, and the album they won the Grammy for was completely different, but just as great.

<a href="http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=111310" rel="nofollow">David Rovics</a> - more folk, but with a decidedly liberal political bias. He's got some songs that are better than others, but when they're good, they're GOOD, and also <strong>FREE FREE FREE</strong> as a bird to download, completely legal and everything. I especially recommend the songs "Jenin" (warning: it's from the point of view of a terrorist, but mostly about the story behind it), "I'm a better anarchist than you" (tongue in cheek, it does have some profanity), "Behind the Barricades," "The Saint Patrick's Battalion" (fascinating piece of history there, and the genesis of this year's novel!), and "Black Flag Flying."

<a href="http://www.stacyphillips.com/sounds.html" rel="nofollow">Stacy Phillips</a> - He plays lots of music types, mostly bluegrass but there's Hawaiian and klezmer and even Greek music. The dobro is just an amazing instrument and he's great at playing it.

<a href="http://www.myspace.com/songwriterTracySpring" rel="nofollow">Tracy Spring</a> - Her music is wonderful, mostly folk with a bluesy edge to a lot of it. "Her Baby Rides a Hog" is a super-fun song. :)

And Minnie Driver; she played Carlotta in the Phantom of the Opera 2004 movie, but I don't think many people know that she has her own solo career. She's more of a mezzo-soprano/alto in real life, though :P Rambling over!

I love listening to the Skullmonkey's [PS1 sidescroller game] soundtrack. It's a lot of music that can just blend into the background. Unfortunately there's a few songs that I find to bouncy and fun and I feel I need to dance along with them and that usually stops me writing.

IE
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tCFrI8TQgw" rel="nofollow">Psychedelic Boogie Child</a>
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uw4UuhuqoFA" rel="nofollow">Castle de Los Muertos</a>
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NEmxtBzbRVs" rel="nofollow">The Incredible Drivy Runn</a>

And has the best Bonus Level song ever created!

ENTER THE HAGGIS. PLEASE. They're essentially an Irish Rock band, but they're a little more Rock than traditional Irish. Their newest album is slightly more indie, and there seems to be a tiny bit of country-like stuff involved too, but it's not mostly country at all. I would highly recommend 'The Litter and the Leaves' and 'The Death of Johnny Mooring' for more rock type songs, 'Another Round' and 'One Last Drink' for the more traditional, catchy feel, and 'Of a Murder' and 'The Hunter and The Phantom Limb' (Or pretty much all of their new album! XD) for the indie-type songs.

Guadalcanal Diary - They sound a bit like R.E.M. (they're from the same time and place) especially on their first album, but I find them more interesting. They have a bit more punk, a bit more rockabilly, a bit of an African influence, and they write about a rather eclectic range of stuff (including: spontaneous combustion, the civil war, the three stooges, Michael Rockefeller, ghosts, and cowboys in the congo). One of my favorite bands and almost no one else has heard of them. All of their albums are on Grooveshark, so check it out: http://grooveshark.com/#/guadalcanal_diary/albums

WAAAAIIT a second...

Have none of you heard of the band Muse?

A lot of people associate them with Twilight, but they're too good for that kind of thing. They do EVERYTHING- Their earlier songs are, I've heard, rather depressing, if you like that stuff. Then around Black Holes and Revelations (album, also a line in their song Starlight), they turn into mostly love songs- and war, of course, with Knights of Cydonia. And then in the Resistance (album, also song) there's CLASSICALZ!!! Like, amazing classical, not the fail songs I write when I'm bored. What really suprises people is that one classical piece, Exogenesis Symphony part 1. It's like, godly epic win :D

No, really, search them. Satisfaction guaranteed :D

Also, if you like classical, go for the Avatar soundtrack. Or the Alice and Wonderland main theme, the more recent one.

Pop fans for Hangover by Taio Cruz

22-Pistepirkko. Nobody I know has any clue who this awesome Finnish band are and it's a TRAVESTY because they are bloody brilliant and should be world famous. Or at least famous enough to come play in the UK so I don't have to keep schlepping to Finland to see them :D

Suntrap. Brilliant folky band I discovered by fluke and now can't get enough of. And I'm a heavy metal chick by trade, so me liking folk is just "eh?"

Inkubus Sukkubus. Again - TRAVESTY! They're phenomenal and I worship the very ground Candia and Tony walk on.

Sarah Jezebel Deva. Some people have heard of her as "that chick who did backing vocals for Cradle of Filth" but didn't know about her solo albums or her own band Angtoria. And Sarah is one of the sweetest people I've ever met, not to mention a really, REALLY hard worker; she deserves to be better known and appreciated than she is.

Haggard. Pure genius. End of.

Van Canto. They do acapella heavy metal, which sounds mental but is actually fantastic.

Then there's others which people on here have mentioned - Abney Park (who I saw on Halloween and am still squealing hysterically about because I never in a million years thought they'd tour the UK), Diablo Swing Orchestra, Leaves Eyes, Tristania, Within Temptation, Voltaire, Emilie Autumn, Draconian, Epica, After Forever, ReVamp (oh hello, Floor Jansen, I appear to rather love you...) etc.

Re: Awesome music that no one else seems to know!

Ten bands that will seriously blow your mind:

1. Menomena. I will seriously put Menomena head-to-head with any other band out there. They are absolutely, unbelievably brilliant. They make the kind of music that holds endless surprises, that constantly zigs when you'd expect it to zag, and that worms its way into your brain and refuses to leave.

2. Titus Andronicus. Because ballsy punk needs more hyperliterate lyrics, and hyperliterate lyrics need more ballsy punk. Plus, they just put a big grin on my face whenever I hear them.

3. Art Brut. Similar idea to Titus Andronicus, with one of the sexiest accents I've ever heard.

4. Janelle Monáe. A relatively new artist with just jaw-dropping amounts of talent. You want mind-blowing? Just <em>try</em> wrapping your mind around <em>The ArchAndroid</em>, my favorite album of 2010.

5. The Jayhawks. They have that all-too-elusive quality Neil Young once called "ragged glory".

6. Doves. Take the good qualities of Coldplay and remove the bland commercialism, and add an extra dash of blue-collar authenticity and wounded soul, and you get Doves.

7. White Rabbits. These guys kinda got lost somewhere in the buzz between vaguely similar bands like Cold War Kids and OK Go, but they're seriously great; the pre-release <a href="http://tbdrecords.com/releases/white-rabbits-milk-famous/" rel="nofollow">stream</a> of their upcoming album has me hooked.

8. The Builders and the Butchers. These guys gave one of the most riotous, high-energy rock shows I've ever seen... and they're an acoustic band. Somehow they aren't quite able to capture that on record, but don't take that as a knock on them. The best capsule description I can come up with for them is "doom-laden punk-folk".

9. Wire. Only one of the most important and influential rock bands of all time... which you've never heard of. Their three albums between 1978 and 1980 (<em>Pink Flag</em>, <em>Chairs Missing</em>, and <em>154</em>) I would take to a desert island with me.

10. Devo. OK, so you probably <em>have</em> heard of Devo, but trust me, "Whip It" was the worst thing that ever happened to them. Let's just say there's a good reason Alan Moore name-dropped them in <em>Watchmen</em>.

Re: Awesome music that no one else seems to know!

I'm back with more obscure prog to make you hate me! Yay! :D

First off, did someone say they like excellent complex catchy prog with incredible female vocals? No? Too bad, here's Introitus:
WARNING, FOURTEEN MINUTE SONG: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2s_BacOT80&amp;feature=relmfu
Comparatively shorter beautiful love ballad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2LuH3r_uj4&amp;feature=relmfu

Okay, you say, that's great, but I really want to ROCK. Also, I have a fondness for the works of Stephen King, especially when they're a thousand pages long. Well you're in luck, because the first half of this band's second album is based on The Stand. In addition, they've written songs based on The Talisman, Something Wicked This Way Comes (where they got their name), and the Twilight Zone and their next album is based on A Wrinkle In Time. Ladies and gentlemen, Shadow Circus:
The first part of The Stand suite: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTXkWNYUnxU
Here's the Twilight Zone one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgoP0-7dbIg
Their entire second album (and their new single) is streaming on their website. Their first album might be harder to hunt down, but is definitely worth it.

Okay, so that's great. You've got some prog, you are satisfied with prog (though I have more to recommend another day), now you want something else to listen to. Maybe alt rock with a twist, plus being depressing is a bonus. Not sure how obscure they are, but here's Eels:
Great song, bizarre video. What more do you need?: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TfqbuTBqX8&amp;ob=av2e

The "music none else knows" is tricky because I lost the notion of what other people are hearing, but, anyway:

Dead Combo
Noiserv
Diabo na Cruz
Wraygunn
(all are Portuguese bands, which half explains the obscuracy. First two are mainly instrumental.)

Alela Diane
Clare Fader &amp; The Vaudevillains
El Perro del Mar
Elizabeth &amp; The Catapult
Emily Jane White
Vermillion Lies
Sons and Daughters
Rasputina (don't remember seeing this one mentioned before, which is a bit surprising)
Queen Adreena
Patrick Wolf
Marina and the Diamonds (not all that unknown, I think, but nowhere as superfamous as it ought to be)
Jonna Enckell

Tom Waits-I have no idea how people don't know who Tom Waits is, but apparently it happens.
Voltaire-For all your folksy, monster slaying events.
Creature Feature-Morbid and references Edgar Allen Poe and cult-classic horror movies? I don't know how they aren't more well known.
Sea Wolf
Portishead
Lords of Acid-NOT FOR CHILDREN AT ALL I AM DEAD SERIOUS ON THIS ONE JUST TRUST ME
That Handsome Devil-One day I will find someone else who has heard of THD. It hasn't happened yet.

Two bands I love and get no appreciation for, Protest The Hero (amazing prog-metal-mental band from Canada) and Breed 77 (London/Gibraltan flamencore band). I have been a Breed 77 fan since 2001 and Protest The Hero since last year.

I also love Diablo Swing Orchestra, Celldweller, Nightwish and a few other obscure (and not so obscure) bands from this thread!

GASLIGHT ANTHEM. 8D Last year someone put '59 Sound on the NaNo music share accounts, and I downloaded it on a whim, then proceeded to go find as much of their music as I possibly could. Ever since I've adored them to death, but I can't get any of my friends to listen to them. Silly people. *shakes head* I'm glad to see another fan out there. :D

I can't say I've ever heard any of those before but I'm certainly liking them! The singer for the Horrible Crowes has a gorgeous voice, and I especially like William Elliott Whitmore. The song that I listened to had a beautiful melody and made me nostalgic. I really like when songs can evoke emotions like that.

Thank you for sharing, I've definitely gained some new favourites!

I've just listened to all The River Empires stuff - you're right they are amazing!! Thanks you for introducing me to such a wonderful band!

Have you tried:

The Antlers - they are really incredibly, easily my favourite band to write to - a lot of their songs are based on the lead singers time working in a Hospice and it's incredibly emotional stuff.

Dry The River (my favourite band) - seen them live 3 times now and they are awesome, also gathering quite a big following now, do check out 'New Ceremony' it's such a tune!

Portugal The Man - only got into them recently but I'be been quickly converted to their music :)

Did you...did you just, like, steal my playlist? XD

Same. None of my friends know who any of these bands are. Attempts at converting the relatives have not really been successful. =P

Why does everyone I know like only pop music?

You are no longer alone Earthbound! I have three quarters of those on my writing playlist, plus Sirenia of course. It makes a nice contrast to Sylver &amp; Milk Inc.

Really? I thought TOAD was a lot more well known. There's even a PS2 game, Indigo Prophecy, that contains a whole bunch of their songs in it (there's a cool scene when you're in the MCs apartment and you get to play with his stereo and pick which TOAD song you want to hear).

I absolutely love Jeremy Messersmith. He's an Indie artist and offers all his albums for free (or donation if you like) on his website. Really great melodies and lyrics that tell stories. He is my favourite artist right now.

Ah, Trapt! &lt;3
They're not popular in Australia, and you'd see flying pigs before they'd come on the radio.
I heard them when I was listening to the Michigan radio station, Banana [insert channel number here].

I thought Theory of A Deadman was really popular. At least, it was here.

And I'm glad most of the bands/artists so far are actually bands I've never heard of. I remember seeing a thread where people would put "Neutral Milk Hotel" or "Vampire Weekend" as "not well known" and I'd just facepalm.

Omg, I'm a huge fan of Rise Against! Saw them live with Thrice (my fave &lt;3) Gaslight Anthem and Alkaline Treo. Seeing them live again soon!! So excited :D

This thread is rather funny because I'm going through and saying "know them, know them..." For like 90% of the bands people have listed. :P

My one that people never know? The Receiving End of Sirens ... Since they don't really exist as a band anymore, not many people have heard of them and <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hUpm7CzjuM&amp;feature=list_related&amp;playnext=1&amp;list=SP10F774639D8C6CE2" rel="nofollow">their entire newest album was released on youtube recently</a>. If I think of others, I'll reply again...

[/quote]

Thank you for mentioning Steven Wilson! I'm trying to figure out how I'm ever going to get any writing done on Sunday, as I will be in Boston for his in-store performance, then concert at Berklee, then backstage meet &amp; greet after the show. This will be at least the sixth time I've seen him live, including Blackfield &amp; Porcupine Tree and the second time I've gotten to shake his hand and say hello.

Keep your eyes open for the next issue of Carbon-Nation to read my review of the Blackfield show earlier this year at the Royale Boston.

Pick a song, any song. I don't think there's another lyricist in the business today as gifted as John Darnielle. That said, most of his earlier material was basically recorded on a boom box, so if lo-fi recordings annoy you, I'd try newer albums like <em>Tallahassee</em> or his latest, <em>All Eternals Deck</em> first and work your way backward.

Just warning you that it is very different! If you want really weird music, listen to his oldest solo work. If you want more maindtream, listen to for example, something from Shadows Collide With People. His solo work varies very much.

And Frusciante has had also other projects and so have other members of RCHP. I haven't checked other so much.

Ps. I was wondering for a while what do Nightwish and Foo Fighters do here but then I realized that Nightwish isn't probably so well know in other countries. But I still don't understand what Foo Fighters do here...

Yes! I've heard of this band through a few of the other bands I listen to, and I've looked them up a few times. It's still a little early to say I'm a devoted fan, but I've been really impressed by their music so far.

I LOVE Muse!! Mainly their older stuff, actually, although I thought Resistance was really good. I think my fave album is either their debut (because it has "Unintended" on it and for that alone is made of win) or Absolution, but to be fair it's kind of hard to think of a duff Muse song... :D

Muse are my favourite band! I mention them and everyone I know except my family and 1 friend are like, 'Who the hell are they?' Why does nobody know them?
But I got really excited when I saw the 'register your iPod' button on iTunes and one of the pics it had was of the Resistance artwork. Yay!
I think their first 4 albums were the best. I think Resistance is awesome but I only listen to 5 of the tracks regularly. Origin of Symmetry is really good as well and it was amazing when they played it live at Leeds! Ah, the flamethrowers....
And they should NEVER have been in the Twilight films. They are so much better than that *insert insult here*. Plus I don't think that Neutron Star Collision really sounded like them to be honest.
