What songs are sung by girls? Anything is fine - cover versions or originals, though I would prefer that there be something of a tune involved and not just people screaming.
What kind of music are you looking for specifically?
For mellow to relatively up beat I would recommend: Feist, Regina Spektor, The Noisettes, Erykah Badu, Emiliana Torrini, Elysian Fields, Frou Frou, Ohbijou, Tegan and Sara
For more upbeat to intense I would recommend: Florence and the Machine, Company of Thieves, Metric, Janelle Monae, Kate Nash, Sia, The Bird and the Bee, The Ting Things, Adele, Amy Winehouse
For the slightly more obscure taste: Bat for Lashes, Oh Land, Elysian Fields, The New Pornographers, Imogen Heap, the Dresden Dolls, Ladytron, School of Seven Bells
There's a plethora of female artists out there. It really just depends on what you're looking for
My favourite band is Rilo Kiley! Their lead singer, Jenny Lewis, has some great solo music as well.
I love Ellie Goulding, Robyn, Emmy the Great, St Vincent, Vanbot, Lights, Neko Case, Lykke Li, Eisley, Laura Marling, and honestly, everything else that's been mentioned! This thread is like a party with all my favourite music! I hope you find an artist you really love. (:
Not sure how you feel about prog, but the band Introitus has a great female singer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2LuH3r_uj4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2s_BacOT80&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybIffy6jeCU&feature=related
Also, there's My Brightest Diamond. I don't know them that well, but Shara Worden's got a great voice.
Of course you can go with some of the more classic rock female singers, too, like Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks, Kate Bush, Nico, Janis Joplin, Patti Smith, Tori Amos, Siouxie and the Banshees...I'm sure I'm missing more.
I love female singer-songwriters, particularly Kate Bush. There's also Sarah Slean, Bjork, Goldfrapp, Suzanne Vega, Maria Taylor, Anna Calvi, Kate Miller-Heidke, etc.
On the Good Ship Lollypop - Shirley Temple Somewhere Over The Rainbow - Judy Garland I have no idea what she sings, but Miley Cyrus is a girl who has certainly put a lot of music Blue and The Cattle Call by LeeAnn Rimes I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas by Gayla Peevey Whip My Hair by Willow Smith Alanis Morissette put out some fluffy dance stuff when she was a teenager
