I love to listen to the Harry Potter movie soundtracks, whether or not I'm writing. When I write, the music just feels so epic and I guess it inspires me to write a lot. :) Also, music with lyrics tends to distract me. So, does anyone else listen to the HP soundtracks (or something similar, like Lord of the Rings) when they write?

I have two Harry Potter soundtracks, three Star Wars soundtracks, and a two-album collection of selected music by John WIlliams. Best composer alive, in my opinion.
Soundtracks make great music for writing novels.

I have six Harry Potter and six (well, seven, since the special edition Empire Strikes Back had two discs) Star Wars ones, though I admit that I was listening to HP5 a lot years before I actually went to see the movie. When I finally got around to it, I found out my favorite parts corresponded to montages. Still, I like the original HP1 themes the most, especially when it plays on the carillon at the top of the local bell tower, filling the outside air with mystery and magic while I sway and dance to them.

I've noticed that the soundtracks I actually use the most are WALL-E and Corpse Bride (how unlikely. This explains a lot). There's plenty of others in my library, I just don't use them as often.

I have a playlist on my iPod of just movie soundtracks--I think it's something like almost 800 songs. Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Chronicles of Narnia, Gladiator, The Last Samurai, The Rock, Band of Brothers, Titanic, Doctor Who, Torchwood, Black Hawk Down, Firefly, Serenity, The Dark Knight, Hidalgo, Interview with the Vampire, Indiana Jones, Master and Commander, The Patriot, Saving Private Ryan, We Were Soldiers, Shawshank Redemption, Transformers, Van Helsing, and several others.

I have a separate playlist of just Hans Zimmer, and just Star Wars, for when I'm aiming for certain moods. And a playlist of just Disney movies.

Pretty much anything by Hans Zimmer, John Williams, Harry Gregson-Williams, James Horner, Steve Jablowsky, James Newton Howard, Alan Silvestri, and a handful of other composers is just pure gold.

Try listening to the theme from Jurassic Park. It is amazing...

I don't have that soundtrack, but I've listened to it before and I do adore it--John Williams, after all! Apollo 13 is another fantastic one. I really need to get it though.... oh, Crimson Tide is another great one too that I don't have.
