Can it be done on a Kindle keyboard?

Does anyone have a word processor to suggest?

I have Notepad by 7 Dragons, but it's limited to 3000 characters per file--like 600 words. Yeah, I could write a zillion little notes, but it breaks up the flow of dialogue. I just hope one of you can suggest better.

I have heard one can write by creating a text file and then doing the writing in Notes on it. I can see this working wth twice daily down and uploads but so humbug. How big a Note can one write anyway? 5000 words? (I wish.)

you can actually access the mobile version of google docs on the kindle. Works best over wifi but I have had it working over 3g.

Although I wouldn't do it myself... the letters on my keyboard have started to fade slightly and I am not keen on losing them...

Holy cow! I can't imagine trying to type a novel on my Kindle! For short notes it's great, but just having to bring up the symbol menu for punctuation would be a killer. Best of luck!

I'm doing all these posts on my Kindle while commuting. You bring up the symbols and leave them up. You don't try to back up to correct the text. When you're all through, you close down symbols and then correct typos. The main thing, like most things, is pacticing until you get over your own mental blocks.

You got two weeks to practice.

It's going to be a Kindled novel!

Typing on my kindle drives me cray-cray. I would rather use my blackberry than my kindle. Which is not to say I'm going to use my blackberry. :D

I'm not sure I'll make the commitment to practice kindle typing, but maybe I won't make a wrinkled nose face the next time I have to type something on there.

Re: Can it be done on a Kindle keyboard?

I'm a fast touch-typist and I kept focussing on "this is slower," too. Then Tim Taylor at Greyhart enthused to me about how he loved writing and editing on his. So I thought, "He's probably a hunt and peck typist."

But what I learned to focus on is that
it's faster and more legible than handwriting on TheBus
I don't have to type it in later
it resists perfectionism. I'll actually type pretty punctuation-free then clean it up on the laptop when I get home.
it gives me 2-3 more hours of writing per day
it's much lighter and cooler.

Is it perfect? No, bu it solves problems.

What I would love to see from Amazon is a USB keyboard about the size of the Kindle itself that I could plug in with this cable for recharging, connecting to the laptop, and all. I could really touch type on that and it wouldn't be humbug to pack.

Don't use a Kindle. I love mine, but would not make an attempt at 1600+ words per day on it. The keys are smaller than my pinky toenail.

Try this out: http://www.davidrm.com/

I'm in no way affiliated with the product, but use it everyday. 45 day free trial. I have found it to be the best kept writers secret out there... And this comes from a guy that has access to all the writers tools out there.

Good luck this year!

Re: Can it be done on a Kindle keyboard?

You seem to me be missing the point that my alternatives have already been tried and found wanting. I have an hour and a half a day in which I can either write illegibly in steno pads which then have to use computer time to type in, or use the Kindle. I have about 20 hours a week at work, to use which I must pack in a laptop which I may not be able to use if it gets too hot, and brings my duffle load to 25lb, which I can't do more than 2 or 3 times a week, or I can use the Kindle. I use the Kindle or I only have less than 30 hrs a week to type at some cost of back pain.

Ah, yes, Neos! Unfortunately my hardware budget went for the Kindle because a Neo is a junk reader and can't show graphics. If I were made of money I'd just dictate the novel to my secretary over the phone. I know a number of people who swear by their Neos, and I know this is a good product.

But the question has never been what hardware to use. This is it. The question was one of word processors for it.

While I don't plan on committing 50K on my Kindle, I do plan on it being a vital tool for my NaNo experience this year. I always have it with me, and I can easily transport notes and data to my PC (via online or usb). Everyone knows the world doesn't stop for writers in November, and with chaotic scheduling (especially around the holidays), and a personal lack of other available portable options, the Kindle was a prime choice for me. =)

I gotta agree with Dreamway in that the Kindle is light, easily accessible, better than handwriting and eliminates the need to re-type. I also suffer from a horribly wretched inner-editor who rides my brain with a whip, demanding perfection. I'm hoping Kindle-ing parts of my novel will help me deal with that demon.

I just literally got a Kindle yesterday and I think I may end up using it to novel in school ... ha ha ha :D My parents don't want me to take it around, but I want it for the bus journeys. I was wondering how I could write on it apart from straight into the body of an email to myself, since my Kindle and gmail don't seem to get on very well - Google docs would be perfect. I'm going to start practising very soon.

I find it faster than typing on my phone and I don't have to type it up afterwards, so even if it's slower than a computer it could be worse.

YESSS! This is totally my point. It's light and it works on TheBus. By working in a remote document rather than the (lack of) word processors, it solves illegibility and time to type in later.

Not so by the way, I have now done a few thou words of a ss with this system and ...

IT TOTALLY WORKS!

We are gonna conquer.

Nobody knew it could be done. We're the pioneers.

Get those notes stashed online so you can access them. Keying them in will be a good way to review them and internalize them while you're waiting for 2011/11/1/0000.

In school all my teachers thought I was taking notes like crazy when I was writing.

You got the point ... it's not as fast as a real keyboard but it's better than the alternatives. I am so astonished all the textaholics haven't jumped on this.

Bus commutes are what ereaders are about. Put it in a big zip bag agaiinst rain and puddles. Keep it in a padded pocket. Convince your folks you will be careful of it. Tell them I carry and use it on a 45 minute commute and it saves my sanity besides not hurting the Kindle.

If it works for you, go for it! I can see the portability would be nice if there's a practical way to store the words and transfer them to other platforms. Use web-based email to send yourself chapters. Word limits might be an issue. I have a notepad "app" I've used to take notes, but it sure would take a lot of prettying up later.

I wouldn't do this, but it's fascinating seeing what *can* be done with a Kindle, even if there's better technology out there... sometimes you just have to use the tools at hand!

Are there good Kindle apps for when you're not connected, that can store and send later? It'd save a lot of battery life that way.

We need a Kindle brigade! I was already thinking of using it when I saw your topic. The typewriter users have got one, so why shouldn't we? ;)

I will probably end up sneaking it with me. They won't know, they're at work same as me. Even if I leave it at home some days, I still have my bus trips to ballet and stuff when I could use it. I tried that text file thing, but it didn't work on my Kindle (and trying to use Write or Die killed it completely for about half an hour), so I think I'll be going for the email-to-self route.

It will save me from RSI, too. I can alternate between a keyboard and my Kindle :D

Google Docs didn't work for me either (largely due to Google insisting things open in new tabs/windows), so I'm using WriteBoard, where you can create a board (free) and then just continually add more to it as you go. It has its own link that I can easily bookmark on Kindle and it is a simple page (header and a text box) so it loads easy.

I know you're insisting on using a Kindle, but I would really recommend an Alphasmart 3000 or Alphasmart Dana...you can get them on ebay for $20-30, it has a decent screen, a comfortable keyboard and is small and light enough to be portable.

Kindles are great readers...but I cannot imagine how difficult it would be to try to write something of any length on a Kindle keyboard.

Even though the only tool you have right now is a hammer, sometimes you really do need a screwdriver instead to get the job done. :)

Poor Kindle, he will be broken by the end of the month no doubt. They aren't designed for the repeated stress of hundreds of thousands of keystrokes. The letters will rub off the keyboard before that too.

Why not just write with a pen and paper?

Or perhaps the novelty and attention you are getting from writing on a Kindle is all that matters.

See earlier remarks on already wearing off markings on an earlier Kindle playing games on it. Whether I hit the keys to write or to play Every Word, the Kindle is designed to take it. (My ThinkPad has disappearing markings, too.)

[/quote]Well, that's unnecessarily inflammatory.

You can offload the Kindle notes files in under a minute and add it to the main manuscript on your PC. It's a lot less intensive than transcribing from pen and paper.

I have used my Kindle to make notes, keep a short form diary, perform Google searches, tweet, and send email for nearly eleven months now. My E key has faded a bit, but I know perfectly well where it is.

Unless you've personally read the reports of Amazon's stress testing team, you aren't qualified to say definitively what it is or is not capable of withstanding. Neither am I, but I do know that my Kindle has stood up to an awful lot of what you would call abuse and suffered no ill effects.

I had to send nlny first back because the screen glitched. I had just gotten it. Now I am super gental and careful with my kindle because I adore reading on it. My iPod touch takes quite a lot of abuse from me but with stands everyday constant use. While the personal attack was not called for I think they were right. From my own expirance and from many blogs, reviews and kindle support tech I am pretty positive the kindle tends to be fragile. This I'd why I keep mine in a zippered case. I would hate to lose the paint on my letters or side buttons and I am in agreement that this device is not made for that kind of constant button mashing. The frame and screen are not sturdy. Risk it if you like but it will be immensely dishonest if you damage your screen or keypad with what Is called "impact damage" like this and then try to get it replaced. Amazon replaces most peoples because they are aware of kindles inherent design flaws that cause many kindle screens to fail. I am not attacking but you are encouraging people to use their devices in a way that may damage them since they are not made for this kind of use.

Re: Can it be done on a Kindle keyboard?

I opened this thread to find a word processor and maybe share some tips with those who did last year on a Kindle.

Since I got mine in February, I have not been gentle with my Kindles. (My DH inherited my WiFi when I got my 3G.) I have not been stupid with them, either, but they travel in a duffel end pocket on the bus. They live in a hard leather flip open case. Are you basically saying Kindles can't commute? Not so. But I wouldn't expect any device to take being stepped on or slammed into hard surfaces.

Please note that the five-way is part of the keyboard, as are the menu, back, and home buttons. They are expected to get very frequent use. It is Amazon which provides the free word games that got me used to typing on this and which I played for just this amount of time. They also provide the browser on which I am accessing this forum. There is nothing in the warranty limiting keyboard use. So if I did button mash sixteen hours a day, it is covered by the warranty. Honestly.

Really, what is with you two? What skin is it off your noses if some of us want to write on Kindles part or full time? The rodent accuses me of being more attention hungry than, say, someone posting any other thread. You assume I will be immoral and dishonest in my vendor relationships when in fact I would be exercising my legal and moral right. Neither of you know me so you are reacting to someone else in your lives on this. (Though I think the rodent is just a troll. The baby talk is a giveaway.)

If the keyboard craps out I'll post it on this thread for the Kindle Sheriffs. I will also post if it survives. Stay tuned.

So far I have done about a sixth of the ms on this.

My kindle is just a WiFi one, but if I could find a way to write on it on the train that would be a lifesaver. Hmmm. I don't think there's a way though. If not, it'll be pen and paper cos my laptop is bulky, heavy and has terrible battery life.

My kindle commutes with me (45 mins on a train, a mile walk, some days two miles, ten minutes on a crowded bus and repeat in reverse, sometimes in pouring rain) and is totally up to it. It's only just got a small scratch at eight months old, which has inspired me to order a sleeve rather than just wedge it against the side of my bag. I'm sure writing 50,000 words on it'll give it a battering, but it's meant to be used. It's not meant to be kept in a clear plastic case and handled with care. It's meant to be read on for hours and hours, carried around, put in real life situations. And one day it'll break, and by then there'll be a fancier one available for less that eighty quid. There's already a fancier one available for what mine cost.

Good luck to you dreamway. I hope your thumbs don't hurt too much!

I haven't messed around with it to any extent, but if you put a Word or text file on your Kindle, can you edit it from the Kindle, or is it read-only?

I've used my Kindle to surf the web and send e-mails from time to time, but you are most certainly a brave soul for attempting to NaNo on yours! I just don't have the patience to deal with the slow typing speed for long periods of time.

Good luck!

Did you consider writing on your smartphone? I've done some writing on my Blackberry... I just keep the files I work on at home on Dropbox, and I can access them anywhere from my BB. Then I can do quick edits or even write full steam on it from anywhere..

I have a BB Curve and the buttons are almost the same size as the kindle, but with a much faster response time, once you get used to it. You'll get a cramp though...

Good luck to you Dreamway.
I had seen a website that could be used on the kindle to sync work with a computer but it announced it was closing last month so it's no use now. I've know people to use gmail to email bits to themselves from the kindle but that was all they did.
My kindle is too full of distractions to even risk attempting to write on it. It would be a case of "Time to write oooohhhh lets just finish this chapter first..........."

If I put a text file on my Kindle, I can make the usual Notes in it, which lets me comment on mss that I'm critting for a workshop as I read. Many so-called Kindle word-processors are a text file to which you just make Notes at length. You could do this to your ms text file. Once home, you have to download those to your computer and integrate them. I could especially see a super-plotter who had the whole thing outlined in detail just starting a Note to each item and typing the actual novel in that.

Yeah, tell me about the cramp. X-D

Certain persons worry so much about the keyboard's health. Last Friday the big joint in my left thumb started aching, so I had to take time off. The Kindle keyboard is assymetrical, and you have to tuck the left thumb very hard to hit the Shift button to get caps. I spent Sunday cleaning a closet, and made up for lost time today. It's nearly the end of my weekend, but my good time to Kindle write is tonight on the way in to work.

I may have to indicate caps some other way. Right now, to avoid bringing up symbols, I skip commas and apostrophes (which helps shut up my Grammar Editor), use ".q." for a question mark, ".x." for an exclamation mark, and "qq" for a quotation mark. That's most of what I use, since I haven't had to invent any others so far. Maybe "yy[the letter]" to switch use to the right hand.

Thank you!

I hear you about the distractions. But my other computers are full of, not only books to read and games to play, but other projects to finish. Distractions are just what writers have to learn to ignore. "Write 2000 words and you can play Triple Town all you like."

Use the Archive function to get everything from Amazon off it, for starters. The very good thing is that if you live on Collections like I do, when you load it back in from Archive, it puts it back in its proper folders, too. No need to go through that again. I found that out when I got my new Kindle and had to load it.

I've been thinking about Kindle-writing while at the gym! How's it working for you? I always have my Kindle out while on the elliptical anyway, so to type on it doesn't seem that much worse (i already take book notes without issue..)

Where did you end up on a word processor? Is Google Docs working for you or did you download something or - ? i haven't really done anything on Kindle other than read books so far, so i'm curious.

Thanks for the infos!

Oh, wow, that sounds painful. I love my Kindle and use it all the time for editing, but I wouldn't want to write a novel on that keyboard. But good luck to you! I can see how it would be better than writing on paper & typing up later :)

WP: I have Notepad from 7 Dragons (bought at Kindle store) and it's good for a few hundred word per file. I find myself using it for unattached fragments. This also does not require online connection when power is low. It is proving more useful than I thought.

Online Master File: GoogleDocs no go. Try http://123.writeboard.com for something Kindle friendly.

Every few hundred you can add is all good. This is working super on the bus. My thumbs are getting in shape. Give it a shot.

Cute cat!

Re: Can it be done on a Kindle keyboard?

As an update:

The Kindle is doing fine and shows no sign of wear. The buttons are all still legible.

I actually find that, with the distractions on the bus, I do quite well filling up a Notepad file on a one-way trip. However, to do anything integrated, WriteBoard rules. Love that thing, and will continue to use it. Operational note: create the file on the Kindle, otherwise it's hard to get in. I can then pile in from any computer I can get online with (I have my main desktop and the Thinkpad).

Left thumb, sore in big joint to hand. Definitely, the operator is the weak point here. Perhaps a Kindle Touch would be more balanced in the keyboard on the screen. But then the screen left for the words is smaller!

I'll probably finish out this weekend on the big machines, so I will make these as exit remarks on the NaNoWriMo Kindle experience.

Lessons:
Don't expect it to be your primary writing tool unless you have thumbs of steel.
Do enjoy it for adding commute time to your writing time.
Do expect it to handle 20,000 words without breaking or wearing out.
4000 characters is not to be despised when time is limited.
A remote file helps you stick to one version on all machines.
Get that thumb in shape, then baby it with hot packs at home.

So glad to see so many of you on schedule or over the top!
