Dragonchilde, please move this to Tech if it belongs there. Really wasn't sure where to put it. Here is a link to a spreadsheet for keeping track of your NaNoWriMo progress. The credit is not mine, not sure where I found it last year, but I updated it for 2011. It is a spreadsheet that tracks many, many things for your month long journey.
Ahh, yes! I used this one last year too! I'm so glad you've updated it, as I actually had no idea where to begin :/ I love how detailed it is - and the morale levels yay! :) Thanks for this! :)
Ok, here's the deal. I'm an Adventist Christian. I don't write on Saturdays and, in an attempt to refocus my mind on Jesus, I don't write on Friday either. I have a daily word count goal of 2500 a day. I know that, keeping this goal, I can meet 50k no big deal.
SO the report card is telling me that I'm behind because I didn't write on either of those days. I know this is not the case; keeping 1667 a day, NaNoers should currently have a count of at least 10,002. I have a word count of 10,195.
However, this bugger is telling me "You've fallen a bit behind, but one or two more big pushes and you should be back in business." Wow! Thanks for the incentive, Excel!
I know that I am where I'm supposed to be, but how do I make Excel realize this? Can someone set up another spreadsheet for me with Friday and Saturday missing? That might change the math a little, because I know I can't keep the Sabbath and write 1667 like every one else. Help me! Please? :-D
That's why I built WriteTrack. When my wife did NaNo in 2004, we realized that 1,667 sounds nice, but it doesn't match reality. I built an excel file for her that year which allowed her to take days off, work extra hard on others, etc.; it worked really well, but was a pain to update for later projects. WriteTrack uses pretty much the same math, but is fully configurable--you set your goal, your start & end dates, what days you can work and which ones you can't, etc.; it takes care of the math for you.
Of course, WriteTrack is a web tool; if you're set on an offline excel file, it's not going to help you. But it's worth trying out, at least?
Nope, not particular like that. In fact, the less I have to download, the more my computer thanks me! This is a nice program, thanks for the tip and the programming!
Thanks that's a great way of keeping track - I've been trying to set up a spreadsheet so I can see a graph but maybe I'm thick - I just can't figure it out. This is another way of keeping track.
I've been trying to do the same but gave up after I realized how awful Excel is on a Mac. I used to use a version that was on Windows. Has anyone tried Countr? http://countr.boxfirepress.com It's fairly new and invite only so far.
It's a simplify chat. You only need to enter in your current word count and it fills in the rest. If you have a different total word count goal, different start date, or different length of time you're writing (up to 375 days), you can change those values on the right and the chat will correct itself. It also highlights what day you're on and there's a line chart of your progress on sheet #2. Oh, and the "ideal goal" thing is yesterday's word count + your daily goal. If you get behind in anything, text will turn red. You'll understand once you start using it.
Oh, and all the columns on the first sheet that you shouldn't be changing are protected, but if you need to unprotect them for any reason, the password is "nanowrimo". (It says that on the excel chart)
Yep - mostly my own work, though I did research how to make the speedometer and some of the functions from various places on the internet & borrowed some ideas of what to include* from last years NaNo thread on Report cards, most of which were overcomplicated for my liking. I've made it as simple as I could whilst still being useful.
Thank you! I deliberately went out of my way to keep it as simple as possible whilst still being useful as I found a lot of the other report cards last year over-complicated for my taste.
After looking at it closely, can I make a minor suggestion?
The dates are inconsistent: sometimes they're mm/dd/yy and sometimes they're dd/mm/yy. I think it'd be better if you chose one format at stuck to it throughout.
oopps, thanks for that - I fixed my local copy so all the dates were dd/mm/yy; I totally forgot to upload a new version with that fix. As soon as we can edit our posts I'll fix it. In the mean time, you can right-click -> format cells and choose any date format you like. :-)
I've never been very good with making these kinds of spreadsheets and so to find one like this is awesome. I'm definitely using this for NaNo this year
I edited one of the ones floating around a few years ago, adding a bunch of buttons and such as I learned more in Excel. It's only compatible with 2003, though... http://dft.ba/-ShariPreview http://dft.ba/-ShariNaNoTrack
Ah, just started using this for an outside-NaNo project--I love it ; u ; My favorites are parchment, warrior woman and the one with the snowy-mountain in the background (I don't think that one's named).
I remember this one website that I was using last year, where you put in your userid and it tracked your progress? Does anyone know what that was called? I can't recall, but I really liked it...
I built one last year which does that. It's called WriteTrack. One of it's major strengths is that it doesn't expect you to do 1,667 words each and every day--you tell it if there are some days where you can't write as much (or at all), or if there are days where you can write more, and it adjusts your daily targets based on your planned availability, as well as how much you've done already. So you can plan on taking Thanksgiving off, if you want, without worrying about falling behind. :-)
If you give it your NaNoWriMo.org user id (not the user name--look at the URL for your profile page to get your ID number), it'll automatically pull in your reported progress whenever you visit the site.
Update: I didn't realize when I posted this that NaNoWriMo.org was changing the system to use user names rather than the obscure user IDs. So ignore that bit of my comment. :-)
Giving WriteTrack your user ID should allow it to automatically pull in your word counts from here (though, since they're changing the system and haven't released new documentation yet, I can't actually verify this for another day or two).
There was this simple chart to print out somewhere in one of the previous years, where you had the days labeled on a horizontal axis and the word count on the vertical one, with a green line running diagonally through it, showing on which word count you should ideally be on that day. You could mark your word count each day with a pen and instantly have a graphic overview of how you were doing, if you were behind or ahead and by how much. I liked that it was really simple yet giving me all the relevant information on just a glance. Anyone remembering it? I want to print it out this year again if I can find the original fileā¦
I still use the old Zotoku one (it works, it's simple, and I don't need any extra planning tools I'll never use), and I usually have a word count progress wallpaper.

Re: NaNoWriMo Report Card
Thanks so much for this! I'd been hoping for an updated one to come along. I'm too useless with Excel to make my own. ;)
Re: NaNoWriMo Report Card
Thanks for this! I used that one last year. I'll be glad to use it again this year.
Re: NaNoWriMo Report Card
This is my first year doing NaNoWriMo, and this report card is totally going to save my ass! Thank you!
Re: NaNoWriMo Report Card
Thank you! That's so useful!
Re: NaNoWriMo Report Card
Thanks for this, looks really really useful.
I think I used one of your spreadsheets way back in 2005 and it was helpful then, hopefully this time too.
Re: NaNoWriMo Report Card
Thanks S.M.Worth it looks very useful. Happy NaNoing.

Re: NaNoWriMo Report Card
I found an amazing one last year that I really like. If I can find where I got it from, I'll share the link.
Re: NaNoWriMo Report Card
Found it. This one is ridiculously useful, though it's made for 2010 and you'll have to edit the dates to '11.
It's the one called Daily Word Count. There's a Mac version, also.
Re: NaNoWriMo Report Card
Oooh, that's my one! Awesome. I'm actually working on updating it for this year, hopefully I'll have it up in a day or two. :)

You can download it from this page.

I think I know the one you're talking about, and it was hosted by Nano themselves. Not sure if we're getting it back this year.
Re: NaNoWriMo Report Card
I built one last year which does that. It's called WriteTrack. If you give it your NaNoWriMo.org user id (not the user name--look at the URL for your profile page to get your ID number), it'll automatically pull in your reported progress whenever you visit the site.
Oh, and it's free. :-)
