Dragonchilde, please move this to Tech if it belongs there. Really wasn't sure where to put it. Here is a link to a spreadsheet for keeping track of your NaNoWriMo progress. The credit is not mine, not sure where I found it last year, but I updated it for 2011. It is a spreadsheet that tracks many, many things for your month long journey.

Thanks that's a great way of keeping track - I've been trying to set up a spreadsheet so I can see a graph but maybe I'm thick - I just can't figure it out. This is another way of keeping track.

I made my own as well.
<a href="http://img840.imageshack.us/img840/2043/trackeru.jpg" rel="nofollow">Screen shot</a>
<a href="http://www.mediafire.com/?s86d13btqg9n81y" rel="nofollow">Download link</a>

It's a simplify chat. You only need to enter in your current word count and it fills in the rest. If you have a different total word count goal, different start date, or different length of time you're writing (up to 375 days), you can change those values on the right and the chat will correct itself. It also highlights what day you're on and there's a line chart of your progress on sheet #2. Oh, and the "ideal goal" thing is yesterday's word count + your daily goal. If you get behind in anything, text will turn red. You'll understand once you start using it.

Oh, and all the columns on the first sheet that you shouldn't be changing are protected, but if you need to unprotect them for any reason, the password is "nanowrimo". (It says that on the excel chart)

<a href="http://svenja.atspace.com/wordtracker.html" rel="nofollow">It's the one called Daily Word Count.</a> There's a Mac version, also.

Yep - mostly my own work, though I did research how to make the speedometer and some of the functions from various places on the internet &amp; borrowed some ideas of what to include* from last years NaNo thread on Report cards, most of which were overcomplicated for my liking. I've made it as simple as I could whilst still being useful.

There was this simple chart to print out somewhere in one of the previous years, where you had the days labeled on a horizontal axis and the word count on the vertical one, with a green line running diagonally through it, showing on which word count you should ideally be on that day. You could mark your word count each day with a pen and instantly have a graphic overview of how you were doing, if you were behind or ahead and by how much. I liked that it was really simple yet giving me all the relevant information on just a glance. Anyone remembering it? I want to print it out this year again if I can find the original file…

After looking at it closely, can I make a minor suggestion?

The dates are inconsistent: sometimes they're mm/dd/yy and sometimes they're dd/mm/yy. I think it'd be better if you chose one format at stuck to it throughout.

Thanks again!

Re: NaNoWriMo Report Card

I built one last year which does that. It's called <a href="http://writetrack.davidsgale.com" rel="nofollow">WriteTrack</a>. One of it's major strengths is that it doesn't expect you to do 1,667 words each and every day--you tell it if there are some days where you can't write as much (or at all), or if there are days where you can write more, and it adjusts your daily targets based on your planned availability, as well as how much you've done already. So you can plan on taking Thanksgiving off, if you want, without worrying about falling behind. :-)

If you give it your NaNoWriMo.org user id (not the user name--look at the URL for your profile page to get your ID number), it'll automatically pull in your reported progress whenever you visit the site.

Oh, and it's free. :-)

Update: I didn't realize when I posted this that NaNoWriMo.org was changing the system to use user names rather than the obscure user IDs. So ignore that bit of my comment. :-)

Giving <a href="http://writetrack.davidsgale.com" rel="nofollow">WriteTrack</a> your user ID should allow it to automatically pull in your word counts from here (though, since they're changing the system and haven't released new documentation yet, I can't actually verify this for another day or two).

Re: NaNoWriMo Report Cards and Word Count Meters

Make it pat me on the back! Please?

Ok, here's the deal. I'm an Adventist Christian. I don't write on Saturdays and, in an attempt to refocus my mind on Jesus, I don't write on Friday either. I have a daily word count goal of 2500 a day. I know that, keeping this goal, I can meet 50k no big deal.

SO the report card is telling me that I'm behind because I didn't write on either of those days. I know this is not the case; keeping 1667 a day, NaNoers should currently have a count of at least 10,002. I have a word count of 10,195.

However, this bugger is telling me "You've fallen a bit behind, but one or two more big pushes and you should be back in business." Wow! Thanks for the incentive, Excel!

I know that I am where I'm supposed to be, but how do I make Excel realize this? Can someone set up another spreadsheet for me with Friday and Saturday missing? That might change the math a little, because I know I can't keep the Sabbath and write 1667 like every one else. Help me! Please? :-D

Emily,

That's why I built <a href="http://writetrack.davidsgale.com" rel="nofollow">WriteTrack</a>. When my wife did NaNo in 2004, we realized that 1,667 sounds nice, but it doesn't match reality. I built an excel file for her that year which allowed her to take days off, work extra hard on others, etc.; it worked really well, but was a pain to update for later projects. WriteTrack uses pretty much the same math, but is fully configurable--you set your goal, your start &amp; end dates, what days you can work and which ones you can't, etc.; it takes care of the math for you.

Of course, WriteTrack is a web tool; if you're set on an offline excel file, it's not going to help you. But it's worth trying out, at least?

Wow, according to yesterday's final word count, I'd finish on May 21 2012. *insert swear words and many many word sprints*.

Ah, just started using this for an outside-NaNo project--I love it ; u ; My favorites are parchment, warrior woman and the one with the snowy-mountain in the background (I don't think that one's named).
