In several books, the end of a section/paragraph/POV, there is a little picture in the middle of the page in between the two sections. How do you make that? (or should I even worry about that at all? (I just find it interesting))
Well, I enter down and then center ***. I dunno about the picture though. However, for the ***, I've found that Microsoft word counts it as a separate word :) cheating? Probably. Oh well.
I went into the virtual keyboard and looked for special characters that looked kinda of neat. I ended up using four characters, actually two characters on the left and then mirror images of those characters on the right. Center justified - good to go! And yes, MS Word counts it as a word! I tried pasting them here but they didn't come out right.
Silly name, isn't it? But that's accurate. Most computers have a preloaded font (+ several variations) called "Webdings" with lots of strange symbols to use. Enjoy.
Scene breaks in proper manuscript format it is indecated as a hash # I used that for mine, only in word. Scrivener just split it up into scenes all ready. In books it depends on the publishing house, it is their choice to use it in the book of not.

Re: That Fancy......Thingy
That's just what I need. DX unfortunately. Hey, I'm working on it!!
Re: That Fancy......Thingy
You could always claim that it is a word. After all, they are characters that mean something.

(Use "Borders and Shading" for the fancy looking horizontal line dividers in MS Word)

MOD NOTE
Moved from Reference Desk. OP noted.
Re: That Fancy......Thingy
This *** ?
That's just shift+8 .
Or you can go to Insert>Shapes and there's all sorts in there. They won't count in your word count, either.
Re: That Fancy......Thingy
I'm not seeing Insert>Shapes
Re: That Fancy......Thingy
Do you mean a scene break? In a lot of books they just leave an extra blank line.
Re: That Fancy......Thingy
Saphire: the fancy thingy is called a "dingbat." There are whole dingbat fonts, full of lots of 'em.
Re: That Fancy......Thingy
"Dingbat"? I've never heard that before.....hmm.

Re: That Fancy......Thingy
Oh, yeah! I've heard of Webdings. I sometimes mess around with them when I'm bored.

Re: That Fancy......Thingy
Huh. This is quite an educational thread for me. XD
Re: That Fancy......Thingy
It's called a Glyph. Check the Smashwords Style Guide - there's a bit about it in there...
