Hi everyone! Any other grad student wrimos here? I'm a full-time Masters student at GW in DC, and so I get the joy of nano + applying for PhD programs + regular school classes + working part time. This November is going to be interesting and probably sleep deprived, but THAT'S OKAY!
Me! I'm a first year PhD student at Iowa State in the microbiology program. I'm taking classes, doing lab rotations, and I'm crazy enough to do NaNo at the same time.
Mememe!!! I'm a PhD student at Michigan, in my second year of coursework while simultaneously teaching two discussion sections that meet two days a week. So I'm so busy, but I'm not sleep-deprived yet. That's what November's for. :)
I'm a third year PhD at CUA in DC, in the Religion and Culture track of the School of Theology and Religious Studies. (Is that enough acronyms yet?) I'm actually part time this year due to health concerns, but still giving NaNo the go, amidst writing a massive research project on religious change, globalization, and the Crusades.
Wow, that sounds like a really interesting research project! I study Christianity, although in an earlier period, but I love the middle ages and there's always a special place in my heart for medieval Christianity!
I'm actually usually an Americanist, but my projected diss proposal has me paying a lot of attention to the development and manifestation of the cult of the saints in times of warfare, upheaval, and epidemic. (I'm working primarily on St Roch, but I keep wandering around to other saints to have effective models.)
Heeeey, another DC student wrimo! Any interest in getting DC student write-ins going? (I'm planning on posting in the regional lounge as well, but I thought I'd say hi here too :)
I mostly live in Frederick and don't get down to DC much these days since I'm on a research-only semester. But maybe, we'll have to see what November brings!
Another grad student here! I'm just starting my 4th year in a MA/PhD program in sociology at UC Santa Barbara. I'm trying to wrap up my MA thesis so I can focus on fulfilling the last requirements for going ABD, but it seemed like a really good idea to do NaNo this year. We'll see if I can keep up with it, but I'm glad to see that I'm not the only grad student in the bunch!
Hooray, fellow grad students! I'm a first year in the Ph.D. program at the Institute for Astronomy at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. My research is in exoplanets, brown dwarfs, low mass stars, and a bit of instrumentation. Last year, I did NaNo while applying for grad school and studying for (and taking) the physics G.R.E. I loved it so much, I decided to try and recreate the madness again this year.
Wow! That's so exciting! I studied astronomy a bit in high school and loved learning about telescopes (including the one in Manoa) and the evolution of their technology over the years. That was how I learned I was more interested in history than physics, but I still love reading astronomy articles. :)
I'm about to start my first semester as a full time PhD student at the College of Education in the University of the Philippines. My area of study is education research and assessment, but first I have to take up my prerequisite coursework before I'm officially considered a PhD candidate.
I'm slowly working my way towards a master's in mechanical engineering. Which is to say, I've taken three classes since the beginning of 2010, and I'm planning on switching schools this spring because I don't much like where I am at the moment. But I'm also working full time, so....
Working on a master's in English and teaching freshman how to write. I've been wanting to do NaNo since my sophomore year and I finally broke this year. Here's to spontaneity! Let's hope I'm still partly sane by the end of November.
I'm teaching two English Composition classes this semester as well. I'm veeery tempted to incorporate NaNoWriMo into my fourth essay assignment--my students are turning in their third essay on November 2.
Second year PhD student here! I'm in Religious Studies, focusing on religion in the US and pop culture. I'm also into religion and literature, which really seems to keep my department guessing. :)
I did NaNo during my undergrad and my MA program (not always winning, but hanging with it just the same), but last year I tried and couldn't get more than a few hundred words done. But now that I'm a little more acclimated to being here, I want to give it another shot.
EmpressTheodora, you're at Michigan? I think you may know a friend of mine who just transferred there.
Hmm, the Department of Near Eastern Studies doesn't appear to have a list of current grad students... This is my last official year in coursework, although I'm allowed to take courses while I prelim or dissertate if interesting courses come up. I am so over taking multiple classes a semester, though - no time to think!
Second-year Masters student here! As long as I pass my portfolio defense, I'll be graduating in May with a Master of Technical and Professional Communication degree from Auburn University. NaNoWriMo is nothing like the writing I do for my classes, which is one reason why I love doing it so much. This is my sixth year of doing NaNo.
Normally I write fanfiction (which is what I'll be doing this year), but I have an idea that's been brewing in my head for an original story that I'd like to try writing next year.
Second term (of three) MLIS here. Not sure how far I'll get - the program's insane as it is and I do volunteering which has me gone for at least two weekends. We'll see.
Please tell me I'm not the only law student here (if there's a separate thread please forgive my whining). I'm a 3L (i graduate in May). I've managed to do NaNo since I was in college so I'm not worried about this year.
I am getting my masters in middle school English. So far I love my program and my cooperating teacher - who is HUGE Doctor Who fan so that's awesome! I've done Nano while student teaching before so I have faith I can make through again but grad school is a whole different animal.
2nd year Masters student here. I'm getting it in Education and if all goes as planned I'll be graduating in May (I hope, I hope, I hope). I'm working on my culminating action research project the exact same time Nano is happening. Oh joy! So, there will be LOTS of writing in my November. I'd like to think that I learned some time management skills last year (my first year here) but who knows...
I'm also involved in volunteering at a local elementary school, which takes a lot of my time on Thursdays, but I'm so excited for Nano this year that I don't even care.
First year grad student and I'm not sure I'll be able to actually do nano this year, but I justify my decision to try, by telling myself I can write when I'm normally watching copious amounts of TV. In reality, I'll probably still watch TV and then sacrifice homework for the worthier goal of winning nanowrimo for the third year in a row. As it is, with writing 1700 words a day for nanowrimo, a 1000 word essay for class pales in comparison.
On the plus side, I work at a coffee shop. So whenever I need a caffeine jolt it's free!! And living in a college town means there's always a place open to write. Bring it on, November.
Grad students!

Anyone else working toward degree #2?

Hey! I'm working on my MPP at UMD College Park! Yeah DC! (I am in the beltway at least.)

Re: Grad students!
That sounds awesome! One of my colleagues here in anthro-history studies different saints in different cultures. It's a fascinating topic.

Yep! I'm in my first year of grad school and also TAing. Let's see how this goes.

I'm a MSc student in the UK. Not sure if I'm going to be competing this year (have a website, animation, etc. all due in November).

Re: Grad students!
Yeah! I'm at Michigan in the history and classics departments.
Re: Grad students!
Oh, okay. A friend of mine is over there working on Sikhism at the moment, so I don't know that you'd be crossing paths. Ah, well.
How is it at Michigan? How much longer do you have in coursework?

Just finishing the first year of my Ph.D. in creative writing at the University of Western Australia -- hello, fellow grad students!

Re: Grad students!
I'm so glad I'm not the only postgrad here. :D I'm doing a full-time MA course in Woman and Child Abuse at London Metropolitan University.
Hi!
Re: Grad students!
Woohoo! Not the only UK based student either!

Hooray! Another MLIS candidate! Where are you going to school? I'm at Kent State, but not main campus, the SLIS branch in Columbus, Ohio.
Re: Grad students!
Hooray, two other SLIS students! I'm at Catholic University, first semester, and currently avoiding writing my very first research paper.
Re: Grad students!
Hey, fellow MLIS students! I'm at the University of Arizona :) Glad to see I'm in good company!
Re: Grad students!
Hello fellow SLIS students! I'm working on my MLS part-time at Indiana University.
Re: Grad students!
I'm at UWO in Canada!
Re: Grad students!
GSLIS at Simmons in Boston, checking in. Howdy fellow library people.
Re: Grad students!
2nd year PhD student in Biology. Glad I'm not the only crazy one! Will be doing NaNoWriMo while studying for my quals...

Rock on! I feel like writing a novel during your third year of law school sounds pretty hardcore!
