I came so close to saying "No one expects the Spanish Inquisition". You should be glad I'm so restrained.
The MC is actually a robot prostitute (whether he is a robot who is a prostitute, or a prostitute for robots is totally up to you - on second thoughts, maybe you should go with the Spanish Inquisition)

Unexpected event: It's night and it's raining hard. There's a knock on the front door. He opens it, and a man is standing there, soaked, water running down his face. He starts to speak and then falls to the ground, dead.

My favourite thing that happens in fiction: hmm, that's a toughie. I like witty repartee zinging back and forth between a couple of the characters.

A line of dialogue: "I was going to serve rack of lamb but that would be inappropriate, as you can see."
