Mentors looking for newbies

Hi all,

Please post here if you are experiences in Nano and would like to volunteer to mentor newbies. Please state any information you feel it would be important for a newbie to know. This can include (but is not limited to) genre you mostly write, your age group, your location, any skills you think you are particularly skilled in, what type of mentor you are - prod with stick till they write, listening ear, contact directly or wait for newbie to contact you etc etc and any dislikes you have when it comes to mentoring.

In order to keep this forum as tidy as possible, and for newbies to find you easier, any posts offering to mentor posted elsewhere will be locked so please only use this post. Also to discuss with possible newbies please take this to nanomail so that this post does not become messy.

Thanks!

Re: Mentors looking for newbies

I'll start :)

I'm Essbee, real name is Sarah but only my parents and grandmother calls me that. I'm based in Glasgow in Scotland where i'm the ML. Time zone is GMT though as i'm a huge ice hockey fan during this time of year I am awake at crazy times.

I mostly write either sci-fi or horror. This year i'm doing both (partly because I want a challenge, partly because I cant decide what genre it will be!)

As I am ML for my region and am also responsible for moderating a few sections on this website I'm probably going to be slightly more hands off as a mentor. I'm more than willing to help with any questions you may have but wont be checking on you daily (not because I dont care but simply because I wont have time to) so please consider me a listening ear rather than a prodding stick :)

So this is me. If you think i'll be useful to you please send me a nanomail :)

I'm Meg, A.K.A. tsunami, A.K.A. that girl poking you with a stick because you're not at your daily goal yet. I'm in Zion IL, on central standard time.

I've stuck with zombie horror novels the last few years for NaNo, but I write sci-fi, fantasy and romance as well. I'm a co-ML for my region and a moderator here in the newbie forum, but as stated above, I will bring out the poking stick if need be! Feel free to PM me if you need any help and I'll be more than happy to help, or poke... ^_^

Re: Mentors looking for newbies

Hi, I'm Jayne and I'm a teenager and student from Victoria, Australia. This NaNo will be my forth attempt and (hopefully!) my second win, so I figure that at this point in time I should offer my help as a mentor if somebody is interested :).

I typically write Young Adult fiction with sprinklings of literary, paranormal fantasy and/or romance, but I have tried my hand at higher fantasy, adventure and science fiction (typically soft sci-fi focusing on sociology). This years novel will a focus on vampires and everyday superheros (hence my title).

I am happy to be the mentor YOU need. I will admit I am rather shy to begin with, but as soon as you strike up a message with me I will be there to answer questions, offer advice and keep you going for the win! I'm on NaNo quite often, and my only concern is time zones (if you are not Australian) and the fact I do attend school during the day - if this doesn't bother you, though, send me a PM :).

Re: Mentors looking for newbies

I am Alex.

I am an Aussie, a Sporker and a Gleek. We will get on just fine if you do not spoil Glee for me.

I have no idea what I'm writing this year, but I'm not panicking yet. I'll do that Oct 31st. However, I am one of those who write IDEAS. If it turns out I'm writing steampun, or erotica, or whatever, so be it. I am happy to take on one newbie, no more because of time constraints.

I am usually around and would hope to get a newbie who uses AIM or Yahoo.

Whilst there is no shame in attempting and not succeeding, I'd prefer to work with a newbie who is determined to do it. In the past, I've had a few newbies who took up my resources, as it were, and then didn't attempt it. I want to help people, but when I commit to doing so... I need you to commit to it as well.

Looking forward to a nanomail!

Re: Mentors looking for newbies

I'm Kayl. I'm eighteen and an Aussie student. This will be my third NaNo.

I was a mentor for five newbies last year and found that it was a great help for both me and them - we often challenged each other with sprints and word wars. I sent a group email/nanomail weekly with tricks and advice and chatted to them regularly. Due to studying for/completing major exams during November (worst month for exams EVER) I'm only able to take on one, maybe two newbies this year.

Also due to said exams, I will probably just end up doing a rewrite of my not so great zombie novel from last year's NaNo. That being said, I do write other things and I'll gladly offer advice if any newbie wants me that isn't doing something similar.

And that would be it from me. I'm looking forward to (hopefully) hearing from somebody who wants me.

Re: Mentors looking for newbies

Hi, just wanted to welcome all the newbies - this is my thrid year so I know how you feel. If you need a mentor - or any other help, feel free to holler! :-) I don't bite and I'm very good at giivng people confidence in tehmselves and getting them through the knotty little problems like writers block - I have a number of techniques which I use to beat that.

I will post more later but I wanted to let you know I'm there for you all (just off to class now - at 44!) I write a mixture of everything really, having started out intending to write for adults I've found myself writing for children, bizarrely! I live and breathe writing and will help anyone. We are having a movie made of two of my books ,which is very exciting.

This year I'm trying to write a fairy story, as in with a fairy as a main character if that makes sense. The planning has shown me loads of problems and I'm really struggling to get anything to pull together. No worries though, i'm sure it will come right in the end - it has to as this story has been going on in my head for 4 years now and there are other ones waiting to come out. I've recently written a non-scary book about a haunted house based on several experiences I've had! :-)

I often have to write a book in a day as I'm often asked to ghostwrite books for other people with incredibly short deadlines so I should find nano easy, right? Not a chance! But I will win again (I have won 2 years in a row!).

PM me if you need anything - sorry if this comes off as abrupt, it's not meant to!

Hi There!

I'm unrulydreamer. This is my 6th year participating in Nano - I was very unprepared my first year and adored my mentor who helped me get through it all. And I try to repay the favour now I know what the heck is going on.

I'm a 24 year old girl from Calgary. I dabble in every type of writing and have so in Nanos in the past include YA, Romance, Erotica, Fantasy, Historical Fantasy and once even a Sci - Fi. This year my main genre is Erotica but with a lot of Fantasy and some romance mixed in. I'm calling it an Romantic Eroictasy.

I'm always online via a messenger or two. And check my nano mail daily - if not more. So if you're looking for someone who will help out, and give advice, please let me know I'd be more then willing.

Throw me a PM and I'll get back to you ASAP

Cheers and happy writing!

I'm Anjirika which is a Japanese variation of my real name. I usually write YA fantasy however this year I'm writing historical romance. I'm 23 from the Hamilton - Burlington, Ontario area. I don't know if there are any skills that I'm particularly good at except maybe for writing dialogue. I love dialogue. I think that I'd be a pretty good mentor, I'll send you lots of PM's saying "You can do it" and I'd also be willing to have midnight freak out msn conversations because I'll probably be freaking out about my word count too.

If you want a little help then send me a PM and we can start on a nanoing adventure together. ^_^

Hi, I'm Xan! I've been doing NaNo since '08 and won twice (the loss was in '08). I generally write Y/A romance/drama/not fantasy. I'm 18 and a girl and a high school senior and I live on the east coast, but I'm pretty much online all the time (except 3Am to 7AM EST. That's my sleep time.)

If you live in my region I can meet up with you at write-ins and such, but if not I can PM you all the time until you get so annoyed with me you reach your daily goal just to shut me up. :D

I'm Palendra and this is my 5th Nano. I've won every year, though some have been more by the skin of my teeth than anything else. I'm 21 and call Minnesota home. I've typically written YA, Fantasy or Adventure, though this year I'm going to try my hand at a Dystopian novel. I'm awful at romance and horror. I can't seem to write a good love story or anything scary to save my life.

I'm more of a "send encouraging notes your way every few days" mentor, but I will bring out a large poking stick if it becomes necessary. I'd love to take on a newbie or two and help you through the process. Send me a nanomail if you're interested.

Ooh, fresh meat! ;)

I'm volcana! I've participated in NaNo a few years now (my profile says 6 years! It doesn't feel like 6 years..). I haven't won *every* time, but I think I have a pretty good track record. I've done NaNo while in college, while working a dead-end retail job and new this year: NaNo with a full-time job! I'm 24 and I live in Central PA (east coast of the US). I'm a graphic designer, so if you need advice (what advice I can give, hah), critiques or just want to babble about typography, I'm yours. ;)

Writing wise, I mostly do science fiction and fantasy. Probably a mixture of the two, as I'm not really a hard SF type, but I'm not really doing much magic and elves these days (not that they aren't awesome.. I just love space).

I'm always around on my phone, where I can do skype chat and gchat, as well as NaNomail and email. If you need an early morning kick in the pants, I'll be up. (Unfortunately, in my opinion... I'd rather sleep in)

Send me a message, nooblings, and I'll do my best to motivate you!

Hey all!

This will be my 9th NaNoWriMo! I have successfully finished all 8 previous NaNoWriMos. I have also mentored newbies extensively in the past and I would be happy to help out new newbies!

I typically write fantasy, although this year I am considering basing my novel solely on dares (just to be adventurous). I'm 23 and currently in grad school. I know quite a few word padding techniques, I would be happy to listen to you talk about your novel (although I may be less good about actually giving you advice on where to take your novel), and I am great about pestering you until you reach your word count! I know lots of good survival techniques for November as well.

I would be happy to mentor anyone - any age, genre, etc. Please send me a NaNoMail if you're interested and/or have any questions!

I am on at all hours of the day and night and check my messages often so I can respond to you relatively quickly.
I will try to keep you motivated and will help as much as I can with what you need. If you fall behind in word count I will pester you to get it up.

Hi! I'm Rosie, I'm sixteen and I live in England, so GMT time, although I do tend to keep quite late hours (particularly in November) for those of you who are in different time zones- I'll respond quite quickly. :)
This is my second year of NaNo, so I remember what it was like being a newcomer to the competition quite vividly. I won last year, and the entire novel was written in about eight days because I fell behind.
I write mainly fantasy, although I wrote a romance for NaNo last year and I am more than willing to help people who are writing any genre.
I'll do word wars, idea bouncing, plot bunny adoption and also general life-issue management if it is needed, and I'm willing to be either a listening ear or a proddy stick depending on what you want/need.

Send me a message if you'd like to try putting up with my pathetic attempts at pep talks for a month! :D

I'm syaffolee. I'm 30 and the ML for Moscow, Idaho and Idaho Elsewhere. I've participated and won Nanowrimo since 2001 which means this is my eleventh year. I've also mentored newbies for the past six years. I primarily do mentoring through Nanomail which consists of sending messages of support, answering questions, and being a sounding board if you simply want someone to lend an ear. If you need any science expertise, particularly in the field of microbiology, I can help you find the answers.

I try to challenge myself every year so I've done Nanowrimo by writing by the seat of my pants and by using outlines. I've tried pacing myself and waiting until the last minute to crank out the words. I've written in a variety of genres including science fiction, fantasy, adventure, horror, mystery, and romance.

I'm also on Twitter (with the same username), so I'm easily reachable there if need be.

If you're interested, just send me a Nanomail.

I'm a 20-year-old from Upstate NY, but I go to college in Utah. I also lived in Seattle for some time. I am a science girl at heart, and consequently my novels always have a fair bit of science in them. I'm excited for this year and hope it goes well.

I would love to adopt and mentor a newbie this year! I'm Cheri and I've been a Wrimo since 2004. I'm hoping for my 8th straight win! I was an ML for USA::Illinois::Peoria from 2006-2010 and I'm feeling a little lost this year myself! I'm still helping the awesome MLs in my region this year with whatever they need, but I have suddenly found myself...a NaNo empty nester!

I normally write in the fantasy, thriller and literary fic genres, plus I'm published in non-fiction and poetry. The genres I DON'T know much about, but I'm willing to learn, are romance, western, steam punk and high-fantasy/sci-fi.

My novel for this year is a dark fairy tale-a Snow White meets Big Brother in the 21st century tale. All of my novels, including the one I wrote before I discovered NaNoWriMo, carry the theme of survivors of abuse rising above their aggressors. This novel is really no different, other than the the abuse here is an abuse of power--so it's more of a global abuse.

If you think I could be your NaNo mentor this year, please PM me. I check regulary, as I'm a fierce NaNo fangirl!!

Good luck to EVERYONE, mentors and newbies alike, with your novels this year!! =)

Hi! I'm Joana and this will be my seventh year doing NaNoWriMo and I've won every year so far. My interests include video games, yaoi manga and, when I'm not being a lazy good-for-nothing, strength training so that I may one day rule the world with an iron fist. If you want me to be your mentor, don't expect any sympathy from me if you fall behind simply because you were lazy or procrastinating :) I love to bounce around ideas with people, though, so I'm good for brainstorming and getting the kinks out if that's something you find useful. I mainly write young adult so have very little experience with adult fiction, and my main genre is contemporary, though this year I'm doing a high fantasy so I do have some depth of experience.

Hi there! I'm Shannon, turning 15 during NaNoWriMo, hoping to find some newbies to help through their first novel! I generally write all over the place, my previous novel being a paranormal romance and the current one being historical fiction.
I'm a very motivational person, and actually coach younger kids' sports teams and have gotten very many recommendations from the parents of those children. If you'd like me to become your mentor, feel free to send me a PM! I don't bite--but I do talk A TON. I'd love to help anyone brainstorm, challenge them to Word Wars, push them into their daily goal for word count, and help those crazy meltdowns halfway through. :D This is only my second NaNoWriMo, but I feel that could assist some more seeing as I can remember very clearly what my first year writing a novel was like. :)

Hello newbies! I'm TA and this is my second year here. I'm sitting out of writing this time around to work on editing my Camp NaNo novel, but I'd love to help a newcomer through this tough month ahead.

I'm mid-20s fantasy/YA writer with a love for world-building and character development, and most of my own stories take place on an alternate Earth-like world that gets a little more built with every story, so I'd be happy to help you develop your worlds or characters. If you like writers like Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams, or George R. R. Martin, we'll get along just fine :)

I'm very accessible through email and as your mentor, I'll be there to give you encouragement, advice, and directional pushes, but you'll be walking on your own as far as getting the work done goes.

Hello~! I'm Lauren and this will my fifth year participating in NaNo. :D I've 'won' three times hoping to make this my fourth. (The only reason I didn't get 09's was for medical family emergency @__@)

I mostly write fiction of really any sort. Fantasy/YA/romance/si-fi ect. Most of my stories involve mythology in some way. On occasion I write stories that don't have any sort of fantasy, but that is rare. In my moments of boredom, when I'm having writers block on my own work, I work on fanfictions to rev up my engine.

I'm 21 in college at UCF, Orlando, studying film. I spend half my time in Orlando the other half in Jacksonville. So if you live around here and want someone to hang out with while you write I'm totally up for it! I guess I'm skilled in making sure stories flow, catching those little loopholes and fixing them. Really good at keeping mythology and the rules of the 'world' where the characters are correct. I'm the sort of prod till you meet your goal mentor and I have no issues if you want to contact me at all. Email, twitter or AIM ect. I'm also here to listen to you if you are having issues with your writing or if you just need someone to talk to.

I love spending time with people talking about ideas and figuring out things for stories! So please NaNoMail me and we can chat~! :3

Hi all! I've never mentored before and only have one NaNo win under my belt (Camp NaNoWriMo 2011, July session) but I have participated since 2006. I am a college student in my last year of school, live in Texas, and am studying theater. I've got a little ADD so my posts, NaNo mails, etc. could either be very rambly or very brief. Until my win, my highest word count was 22k, most of which was written in the last week of the month.

I usually write fantasy, though I've also explored mainstream, YA, horror, and am delving into the thriller/suspense genre this year. My strengths in writing include detailed, but not overdone descriptions and a penchant for natural sounding dialogue. I do have a weakness for comma abuse and run-on sentences. Writing is my passion and I could talk about it all day. I plan to blog/vlog throughout November as well as participating in NaNo and keeping up with my school work. If any newbies are interested in having me as a mentor, please NaNo mail me. I'd love to help you out!

I love watching movies and want to get more into writing screenplays but I still love writing novels. Some stories just work much better as novels. Anyways I love writing horror stories. I enjoy all kinds of genres though so even if you write in another genre I can still help.

Shoot me a pm if you would like me to be your mentor. I can be there for all sorts of advice and encouragement.

Hello! I've done NaNo for three years, winning all three. This will be my fourth year. I'm 37, a wife, mother and dentist, so I understand the needs of writing around chaos. I generally write magical realism/fantasy/supernatural. I tend to write somewhat dark though this year I'll be working on what is supposedly going to end up a paranormal romance of sorts. I'm happy to discuss other genres but I may not have as much experience in them.

I'm available via email, AIM and NaNoMail and I'm in Texas, so USA Central time. I'll send encouragement, pokes and prods, as well as be there for questions and as a sounding board.

Welcome to the most insane most rewarding month of the year. ^__^

Hi,

I have done NaNo for four years. Last year I had a few newbies and loved mentoring them. I learned from them as well as them learning from me.

I am a 34 year old girl living in Los Angeles who writes about dating, sports and entertainment. The novels I write are chick-lit.

Still coming up with the idea for November, but something will appear.

I love helping other writers and have helped some not only through NaNo but script consulting as well.

Since I am Pacific time, I am available through messages and messenger. I can offer encouragement, little kicks in the butt and you can bounce ideas off me as well. I will help in any way I can.

I do, however, give good advice and encouragement, and my older daughter is 3 and just as hard-headed as her mother, so I'm accustomed to hearing "no" and begging to differ.

I'm Sarah, 23 years old. I currently live in Buffalo, New York, but I'm from Maryland. I mostly write fantasy and YA/fantasy, but I have a tendency towards historical fiction, science fiction, and satire as well. I'm currently working on my PhD in ancient languages and archaeology, but in college I did minor in Medieval/Renaissance Literature, so between those fields I have a lot of knowledge and experience particularly suited to those genres in which I write.

This is my 5th year doing NaNoWriMo. I'll be available through email, twitter, gchat, etc. I'm willing to listen to your ideas and I'll offer my honest advice. I would love for you to write the best novel possible, not necessarily the easiest novel possible. Although the nature of nano tends to favor the latter, that's where it's nice to have a mentor to sort of guide you through the writing process, push you a bit further than you would otherwise go. Sort of like a coach, perhaps? And I do tend to either ask questions that will make you re-think some things and/or give you some references to other books that you might find useful for ideas. So basically, I do give you encouragement, but if you want a mentor who goes a step further and guides you toward a better novel, then I'm your girl!

I'm also a CRLA certified tutor, if that makes any difference. I currently teach teenagers, so I'm fairly comfortable working with that age group, although age doesn't particularly matter.

If you're interested in working with me, send me a message and tell me a bit about yourself and your writing!

This year, I'm trying for the normal 50,000 words and am starting to get my planning done. Most of my writing is Young Adult fantasy, sci-fi, or mystery.

Last year, I mentored an awesome newbie who won with a few days left. I'm the kind of mentor who will try to motivate you and bother you via NaNoMail when you're behind. I'm always willing to talk, do word wars, and help you however I can. I'm willing to mentor a few newbies this year, so send me a NaNoMail if you're interested!

Re: Mentors looking for newbies

Hihi! I'm probably best known as Lini. I'm currently twenty-two and living in Colorado... which isn't a great place to live if you realized that you and snow really just don't get along anymore. Despite living here, my hours run from ~12p-7am (Mountain), so, chances are, I'll be awake at those odd hours of the night when you're drowning your novel sorrows in the nearest coffee or tea mug.

This year would be my... fifth NaNo. I believe. I've only won once, but I've taken great throws at NaNo every year, increasing my word count by 10K progressively as the years went by. I'm not a planner, but rather, the crazy in the back of the room trying to get the voices in my mind to hush long enough for me to at least write down what they're saying. Most of my novels, thus far, focus on the characters, and from there, they eke out a path. Sure, the road isn't always smooth, and I'm always looking for ways to make them hate me along the way, but in the end, I rest assured that my characters are stronger from whatever tragedies I've forced them to endure. My novels generally feature strong women and trying to understand men in some way, shape or form, although I have also tackled fantasy and the creation of new worlds.

As far as mentoring, I'll do a bit of everything. Ask how it's going, set word wars, offer suggestions should you need it, and, simply, be there for whatever you need.

Chuck me a NaNomail and the voices and I will join in supporting you past that finish line! ^^

Hi, my name is Popsnorkle. I'm 23 and this is my third NaNoWriMo. I've won 2 out of 3, and I plan to make this year 3 out of 4. Fantasy and sci-fi are my genres of choice, but I base most of my writing on myths and fairy tales. I'm currently revising a post apocalyptic retelling of the Medusa myth, and this year I've decided to try my hand at a sci-fi retelling of Sleeping Beauty called The Last Rose.

To be honest, I'm not really the whip people into shape type. If you insist I will, but mainly, I'm the "if you're stuck and need to talk" or "way to go, you can do it" type mentor.

Hello!

I'm Amanda, 22 years old, living in Michigan. This is my 4th NaNo, and I'm going for my 4th win. I tend to write mainstream fiction with romance, though this year I'm not quite sure what I'm going to be working on yet. It's a toss up between starting something completely new, rewriting my '08 novel or rewriting a fanfic I started five or six years ago.

I usually plan out my novels, but I have done NaNo without a plan before (09), and I've increased my word count by a good chunk each year except last (56k in 08, 77k in 09, 50k in 2010). I've done NaNo as a college student, and this is the first year I'm tackling it without college courses on my plate.

As for mentoring, I can give advice when you're stuck and just be an ear if you need it. I'm usually around on AIM/Yahoo, but can do gchat and email as well if you need someone to prod you when you're behind or just to check in on you from time to time. I'm usually up early and around late, and can do chats/email on my phone if you need a prod then.

Send me a message if you're interested, and I'll do my best!

Re: Mentors looking for newbies

Hi everyone!

I'm Melanie, I'm 22 and I've done nano since 2006. I can't boast about my success in finishing since I've only ever finished once, last year. But I did surpass 50,000 ending at 52,756 =) My writing is best described as fantasy-punk or modern fantasy. Last year's book was a prequel to Peter Pan told though the eyes of young Captain Hook, who gradually ages throughout the book to be old and the kind of the pirates. Another finished favorite of mine focuses around a group of high school seniors who lived in the same desert town their whole lives and they soon discover that the years of underground government testing gave them body altering mutations that they use to their advantage in various ways. Hopefully, that will become a series, but I've only had the muse to finish the first. This year I plan to write something a little more mainstream about a girl who is forced to turn to porn after she's robbed of her money on a vacation.

Think of my writing as a cross between the simplicity of J.K. Rowling and the language of Gregory Maguire. I enjoy to keep my writing simple so the story doesn't get hidden behind the lush of adjectives used to describe a tree. However, that doesn't mean I don't take advantage of my vocabulary to paint very precise pictures like Mr. Maguire does. I am credentialing to be an English Teacher right now so I love to be of help to others. I feel that working in partners or as a team seems to help keep everyone on a good pace and that's a lot of what this competition is about; meeting your daily deadline of words. <3

Please, PM me so we can work together!!

I would be totally willing to mentor a newbie. I'm available for chatting, listening to rants, giving (probably slightly long-winded and ramble-y) advice etc etc.

I'm a 20 year old female college student balancing an extra-large course load with theater and (soon enough) Nano. I love cake, reading, and archery. I try really hard to knit, but I'm really, really bad at it. I could spend hours in a bookstore or flipping through cookbooks.

This is my 7th year doing Nano. It started off as a project in my high school English class, and somehow became the way I spend every November. I've won all but one year, and it is my opinion that I am the author of five not-that-great novels. (But hey, they're MY not-that-great novels!) I've been writing mostly YA novels, but to be honest, I'm not really sure what I'm going to be writing this year.

As for my own reading, I love books about food (comes part and parcel with being a culinary student!) and Harry Potter. As for the rest of my reading, I'm not really positive what to classify it as. Maybe Chick Lit? (And I don't usually admit this, but I have a secret love of steamy romance novels.
Last year I decided on a whim that I would start running. I had never done anything remotely athletic in my life. A few months later I ran my first half-marathon. It wasn't pretty but I did it.

I heard about Nano a few months ago and decided I should give it a shot. Of course, other than a blog for my business, I have no writing experience, but I signed up. My only defense is that I love books and love to read.

As you can see, I'm susceptible to whimsy, but there it is.

So, "amid" my life-crisis, I'm here, and totally clueless, and probably, no DEFINITELY need a mentor more than anyone else on this forum. I have no idea where to start.

Anyone up for a challenge that is moi??

Hey there!

My name is Colin, and this is my second year Nano'ing. I won last year, and then completely forgot about adding the finishing touches to my story.
I'd absolutely love to mentor anybody that would like help.

About Me: I'm 27, live in Comox, BC, Canada (On the island), and will probably be doing most of my writing during the evenings, but have no problem mentoring from afar.
I generally prefer to read (and write) in the epic fantasy genre, but hey, broadening one's horizons is as important for a mentor as it is for a newbie.

PM me if you're interested in a mentor who's always available to prod you into meeting your daily goals!

Re: Mentors looking for newbies

Hello.

I'm Ryanna and this is my third NaNoWriMo. In my previous two attempts I have won comfortably. In my first year I started late but managed to complete 72,578 words in 18 hours, and last year I managed just shy of 1,000,000 words over the whole month, so I will be able to help motivate anyone on to a larger word count.

I love reading and writing, especially fantasy, sci-fi, romance, children/young adult fiction. But I would be willing to help anyone that needs it. I am in Liverpool so I run on GMT time but if you message me, even in the middle of the night, I will get back to you as soon as possible.

I would be totally willing to mentor a newbie, or even a group of newbies. If I become your mentor I would be open to emails and NaNomail if you ever need to chat (or rant). I would send you a weekly pep-talk via. NaNomail and I would be posting tips and thoughts as well as lots of helpful information onto my blog.

If you are interested please PM me.

Heya - I'm Cora and this is my 8th (EIGHTH!) Nano. I'm currently based in Adelaide, Australia... but I'll always consider my home region to be Sydney.

I'm a speedy typist and managed to hit the 50k mark on Day 7 in 2009 (last year was a bit of a fail), and I'm aiming for very much the same sort of thing this year.

You'd be welcome to sit in the Adelaide IRC channel where I waste most of my time and challenge others to word wars, have contact over nanomail or even troll facebook for a kick in the pants if you need it :)

I'm super-friendly, highly-caffeinated and love taking photos of bees.

I'm a nineteen year old and generally write urban fantasy during NaNo. I'm a Gleek, Harry Potter fan, Lord of the Rings Fan, and Nerdfighter. I'm a sophomore at University and managing two jobs on top of that. I'm always on AIM, Twitter, or email to talk!

I'm a listening ear mentor. I can understand getting behind when real life kicks in and can offer motivation, word wars, and tips on how to keep your word-count up! Feel free to send me a PM if you want me to be your mentor.

Re: Mentors looking for newbies

I've done NaNo since 2003, skipped one year and wished I hadn't, and of the years I did it I won all but one of them. Let's see, that makes 7 tries and 6 wins.

I am normally a pantser (no plot ahead of time) but this year I'm challenging myself to use a plot. In fact, my first year I decided on October 31 to do NaNo and spent November 1 figuring out what I was going to write; typically I would do some brainstorming in the last week of October but that's it.

I write SF or Fantasy depending on my mood and the whims of the story and characters; this year I'm trying out space opera just because I've never done it before.

I'm a big fan of trying new stuff, so if you're doing NaNo for the first time, you're trying new stuff and I like you already.

I'm not very good at reaching out and contacting people but if you email me I'll reply back :-) I expect I won't be very good at prodding people with a stick but I will try to make a point of contacting you every couple of days, even if I have to set an alarm reminder to do it. I expect I would be more in the realm of helping hash out story logic. Also, I'm an engineer and also read scientific papers for fun outside of my field so I know some pretty strange and random stuff.

I'm based in Vancouver but I travel a lot for work and I don't know yet which time zone I'll be in for which parts of November. Last year I started NaNo in Miami and finished it in Vancouver. I've started a NaNo on a plane before, too :-)

Hello, my name is Kelly, I'm 19, from Maryland and am willing to help any newbs on their NaNo adventure. This will be my third NaNo, I've won my previous two, and hope to continue that trend into this year. I write mostly fantasy and realistic fiction. This year I will be writing a lit fic (I think). If I don't start this one, I will be finishing up last years NaNo.

I've very personable and easy to get along with. I am up until all hours of the night so it doesn't matter where you live, I can probably talk to you at some point during your day. I don't go to college/university since I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life, but after looking back on some of the files on my computer, I have decided on getting a degree in creative writing. I admit I'm not the best writer or most knowledgeable, but gosh darn it I will hunt down the answer to your question as best as I can!

So yeah :D NaNo mail me if you're interested in being my newb (tehe, that sounds funny). If you have Skype, that's a giant bonus because I'm signed onto mine nearly 24/7 (I do fall asleep with it on though, and I have it on my phone so I'm usually signed in at work if it decides to cooperate)

That's all. Much love and have a fantastic day!

This is my sixth NaNoWriMo. I write fantasy and science fiction, and this year I'm writing a science fiction crime story.

I can offer oodles of encouragement, buckets of motivation and and help where you need it - but I won't write your novel for you. Any decisions on what to write, what path a character might take, etc. are entirely up to you. It's your book! ;o)

On the offchance that you're writing about any of my interests (see my NaNoWriMo author page) then my knowledge and experience is also at your service.

Send me a nanomail if you need someone to be running alongside you, holding out bottles of water and spiffy sports drinks, shouting encouragement and passing you a towel. And the one thing I won't let you do is throw it in.

Hallo, all. This will be my fourth Nano. I've won three times before, and always by the seat of my pants due to a hectic schedule which is getting more crazy as the days pass. In the past, I've written fantasy and adventure novels, but I think this year I'll be doing a sci-fi novel with . . . lots of other stuff mixed in.

I am currently based in San Antonio and will gladly poke, listen, or talk your ear off based on whatever you say you need - particularly the week of Thanksgiving, when most of my other obligations will be entirely vanished and I will have all the time in the world to work on Nano.

Cheers!

Hiya Nano newbies! I'm Stefani, 27, in the San Francisco Bay area (north bay to be precise). This is my 5th Nano, and will hopefully be my 5th win! I tend to write horror or thriller stories with a bent to the supernatural and paranormal. I have been a mentor for new Nano'ers for 3 past years now, this will be my 4th year. I will accept anyone really, any genre or age or location, I can be the angel on your shoulder regardless. Generally I will send a few Nanomails before Nano starts to try and help get you prepared, then a daily email with advice or encouragement daily throughout November. And if you are having a problem that the entire newbie group is not experiencing, just message me directly and I'd be more than happy to help, poke, prod, or encourage as much as is necessary. I love to see all the newbies I mentor win, and I will do anything I can to help you make that possible.

Normally I will take on a group of 4-5 newbies, and I find this helps me still have time for my own novel lol. But please send me a Nanomail if you think I might be able to help you, I promise to wait until November 25th to threaten you into writing! And believe me I can fix any novel catostrophe. Two Nanos ago I got so annoyed at my plot I had a nuclear bomb take out the entire population of earth and had to write the rest of the novel about the zombies that resulted from that. If I can fix that, I can help fix anything.

Hey there :D My name is Heidi, I'm 16 years old. This will be my fourth year doing NaNoWriMo. I only made it to 10,000 words the first year of NaNoWriMo, I know how daunting the final goal seems, and my biggest problem was that I didn't utilize the enormous community that was there. I won my second and third year. I learn really how helpful it is to have people cheering you on. That's why I started a NaNoWriMo club at school so I'll be helping out lots of newbies this year. :P

I would love to help someone through their first novel, I know I could have really used it and didn't have it while I was doing my first NaNo.

I love to do word wars, or just bounce some ideas around and give encouragement when you're feeling down (I have my own crisis every year, so I know how it feels xP).

I'm Shen, 25, from England. I'm a pagan, I usually write fantasy but have done horror & supernatural, with some satire on occasion too. I used to write erotica and romance (and was offered a contract with a publishing house for those).

Last nano I wrote 83k words in half the time. I'm pretty damn competitive but I can be a good sounding board/listener if that works better for you. Then again, if you need me to drag out your competitive streak with a large pointy stick I can do that too!

Hi there,

My name is Becky, I'm 23, live in Sweden, Europe and this is my fourth Nano. I've won Nano in -07, -08 and -09. Last year I had too much studies to get involved with Nanowrimo, but this year I'm back on the horse, with a pretty good idea of what I want to write. I've written in genres like adventure, magical realism and film noir. I'm usually a writer of poetry, and a bunch of short stories.

My number one area of expertise is WORD WARS. In my opinion there's no better way to boost your word count and get really productive, and one of those things I didn't learn until my second year, and really wish I had known about for my own newbie year! I'm always looking to know new people and if this could be combined with writing together, then count me in.

I use MSN for all my word wars and basically all communication so if you feel comfortable on MSN then that's a plus!

My name is Boone. I am a 5-year NaNo veteran (though with only 2 completions). I'm also 30 and open to just about anyone of any age -- I work with a variety of ages and lifestyles in my group -- and work with teens on a regular basis.

I hold a degree in Creative Writing, and I currently run a writers workshop in Milwaukee, WI. It's nearly a full-time gig, but not quite yet. Writing is a passion: teaching writing is even more so for me.

My specific interests lie in speculative fiction. This year I am writing a steampunk piece with a focus on a more character-driven plot than an action-driven one. It is heavily-inspired by Victorian and early Modernist writing. Thus mechanic and style are going to be a big focus for me this year.

If you're looking for a kick in the pants and some serious feedback and advice on your work, then I'm your guy. If you're taking NaNo as a serious foray into completing a novel, polishing it, and getting it ready to send out in the short-term future (i.e., the next two years or so), then I can help. Feel free to send me a NaNomail.

Cheers,
J Boone Dryden

Hi all, I'm Becca :-)
I'm 23 and have attempted NaNo three times before, somehow managing to win every time. I don't write a specific genre but am writing a children's book this time round. I've just finished being a student and am looking for work but job hunting takes up less time than lectures and studying so I'll have the time to start a newbie or two this time round. I'm currently in England so working in the BST time zone at the moment, back to GMT soon.
Send me a NaNoMail with the button under this post if you want to pair up :-) I'm not sure how good I'd be at prodding newbies along but I'm quite willing to answer any questions and be a general friend.

Hello, people!

This will be my third NaNoWriMo, and hopefully, my third win. I'm trying on an overachiever's hat this year, due to the fact that 50,000 isn't that much of a challenge for me. In the past I've written YA, but this year, I am trying steampunk style fantasy. I've never mentored before (lots of firsts this year!), and I've also never had a job during NaNo, which I will also be juggling this year.

I am 16, and would love to mentor someone in my general age group, who is serious about finishing their novel. I would be happy to send you frequent notes of encouragement, answer any questions you have to the best of my ability, and/or give you any other encouragement or help you might need! I am really, really excited about mentoring, but due to overwhelming busyness, I will be able to take on only one person. Feel free to message me, though, even if it's just to say hello and see if you would possibly like to have me as your mentor! Hope to hear from you!

My name is Jennelle but a lot of people call me Blue (it's easier to spell and remember!). This is only my second nano and I'm not always so good at things such as spelling but I'm wiling to help anyone in anyway that I can. I'm always willing to listen to your fears and attempt to help you find your way through this new scary adventure that turns out isn't as scary as it seems.

I live in Southern California so I am in the pacific time zone but am basically nocturnal so am online every night until around dawn usually. My favorite thing to do is be helpful.

I'm going to be writing a historical novel this year about Disneyland but with the twist of it being told from a vampire's point of view. I am not working except for 2 days a week as a volunteer due to health issues. This means I have plenty of time to help people enjoy Nanowrimo. I got a lot out of it last year, including meeting a friend at a write-in who became more than just a November friend. It also helped me finally get things on the page I'd been wanting to write for years even though I never did anything with it afterwards due to some personal experiences that made the story I wrote too difficult to look at now.

Feel free to send me Nanomail with any questions or more info and other contact methods.

Re: Mentors looking for newbies

Hey, Newbies! I'm Secura (as you can tell) and this is my third year (and hopefully my third win). I have written four novels and am working on a fifth although that probably won't be done until sometime next year so this year's NaNoWriMo novel will end up being my fifth. My novels' genres are as follows: science fiction (NaNoWriMo '09, '10), mystery/romance (that would Camp NaNoWriMo July session), and fantasy.

I'm among the older teens group and periodically live in Wonderland. Okay, fine, I live in the USA. I do have some experience editing novels. I play piano fairly well so if you have any questions about that I might be able to help you, although, I'm no expert.

I did mentor someone last year and they did reach 50K although that was totally their doing I just helped with questions and prodded a little. Ah yes, this part. I'm more of a genlte prodder. I don't mind helping with ideas and answering any questions about NaNoWriMo that you have. Last year, I mostly communicated with my newbie through NaNoMail but I suppose we could figure something else out if we had to.

Hello :).

I'm Maria, 18 and a freshman in college where I'm studying Creative Writing. I've done NaNo every year since I was 13 and I won two years -- '06 and '08. I might not be the most successful Mentor, but I'm very passionate about writing and really do love to do this (over the summer most nights from 9:30-11:00 you found me sitting at my laptop in my room writing -- really!). I'm determined to win this year and I would love to help someone else win too!

Age is just a number to me, so don't be shy no matter what it is! However, I do need to point out that I know nothing about fantasy or sci-fic or anything other than mainstream/literary fiction (although I do read a little fanfic here and there). If those things aren't a problem for you nanomail away!

I'd love to have some more friends, so don't be shy. I'm pretty much always around!

I'm ayaella7, but i go by many different names, the one i like the most is CLV. In my first year my mentor was actually the person that introduced me to Nano, and surprisingly enough it was none other than my sister, so I'm very thankful for everything she did and I want to help share the experience with any newbies that are interested.

This is my 3rd year doing Nano, and i can't wait to get started. I'm 24, and live in Winnipeg. I'm open to any type and kind of genre, and am slowly starting to dabble my way through them. In the past couple of years i've written Supernatural, and Fantasy, this year is urban fantasy with a tuch of Erotica (not sure how much will actually be in it as of yet).

I'm always on my messangers, and I check my nanomail like continueously during the day and evening. So if you're looking for someone to give advice, or you need to talk things out while you write, I'm always willing to listen and help as you need it, and if your word isn't getting very far and need a good whipping to get back on pace, please let me know I'd be more then willing.

Good luck

Hello,

My name is Daniel and this is my second NaNoWriMo and I succeeded in the first one I've done. I'm 22 and finishing up college. I usually write mainstream fiction with a bit of sci-fi thrown in. I tend to use a lot of dialogue or internal monologues in my writing and usually always end with an ambiguous ending.

I'm quite sarcastic, but I don't think I'll be that much when I start mentoring. Only looking for newbies who plan on finishing, not someone who contacts me once and then drops. I have a lot of technical knowledge as well. I also tend to bounce ideas off of other people as well, so expect that. My method of helping people work is to keep poking them with a needle until they do.

Looking for about three or four newbies. Contact me via NaNoMail. I prefer to do my messaging via Skype or AIM.

"My name is Andrea and I'm a nano-holi...." oops.

A few years back the site ate my profile.... I'm pretty sure that this will be year 6. I've reached 50k each year and a have a growing pile of crappy first drafts... mostly satire. Much of my real life involves writing (and publishing) non-fiction. I have some work-related road-trips this year in November so I'm a little nervous.

I love newbies and usually connect via the Nano-orphanage but would love to start off the month with one or two. I like to check in via nano-mail and, even on the road, can usually respond the same day.

I'm way over 21 and am open to any age. Am not open to drama. At all. If you want to do this and want help holding yourself accountable nano-mail me. I know some helpful tools and am really good at cheering you on to focus on quantity at this stage. Have some neat tricks for silencing the Inner Editor and back kick-*ss virtual brownies.

Hello. I am Night, and this is my second year here. I will be writing in this year's event, and it would be awesome to help a newbie or two through the writing process.

I'm a senior in HS, and I typically write fantasy and science fiction, on worlds of my own creation. But, this year, I'm trying to write my novel on Earth, so I'm really wondering how it'll turn out!

My favorite authors are Mercedes Lackey, Naomi Novik, Madeline L'Engle, Erin Hunter, E.E. Knight, Pratricia Briggs, and Anne McCaffery.

I can help with basically anything, whether it be finding something that fits into the overall story or writing riddles and stuff, to correcting and helping with grammar.

Hello! My name is Gillian and this will be my second year doing NaNo.

Last year I had a mentor and let me tell you, I probably would have done a whole lot worse without her. I was scared STIFF. She was encouraging, kicked my butt in gear when I was lagging behind and she somehow bribed me with delicious cake despite living on the other side of Canada.
It's great to know that's there's someone out there in the world specifically concerned about YOU and YOUR novel. It's a special feeling and I'm sure being a mentor to someone would be an equally special feeling.

So. I'm sixteen years old and in grade 11. I like paperclips, cats, puppies, and listening to music. I'll try to be helpful in any way I can and encourage you to finish this novel. Feel more than free to nanomail me if you want me to mentor you.

Re: Mentors looking for newbies

Hallo newbies - I'm Jack, a four-time NaNo veteran-and-winner what's been a New Englander in the Old England London area for some time now, and I'm looking for a keen buddy or two for this year who's up for overenthusiastic amounts of motivation, the odd kick in the pants, and perhaps some unconventional words of wisdom. I've had buddies over the past three years with whom I've become quite close; ideally, I'm looking for one or two people this year who want individual attention, the sort of motivation tailored to suit them, and perhaps the opportunity to peek in on and share someone else's NaNo experience rather than simply doing what they're told.

Over the past few years I've done weekly newsletters during November, but I've also checked in with my buddies about what works for them - some people like a daily poke, a chat about plot, and the odd word war, others just want reminders that they're alive, and I'm up for whatever. Won't be writing yours for you, naturally, but I do love a good gossip about troublesome characters and the like, and I'm happy to help in whatever capacity's best for you. I've got a decent track record with this sort of thing (knock wood), so with any luck I've got a few tips that might actually work.

I've done almost exclusively historical fiction in the past - last year was the Napoleonic era, this year's looking to be World War II Netherlands, maybe - so I'd definitely be best for those poking their noses in that department, but I'm more or less up for any genre with the possible exception of young adult. Otherwise, I'm a bit of a Shakespearean thing what likes rock 'n' roll, history, football, airplanes, and a few other things, which I suppose is worth knowing. Drop me a message if you've got questions or want to say hello - I look forward to hearing from you!

Re: Mentors looking for newbies

Profile & Style:
I'm 35 in Arizona; with a versatile writing style and open minded. I'm positive and enjoy helping others succeed; with an inclusive personality type. I am a screenwriter who fell into the cult of Nano.

Track Record:
Completions 5 out of 6 attempts (I was out of state and gave up the second day of my second Nano attempt since it seemed simply awful). I did a NaNoFiMo [unrelated] and even a JaNoWriMo [unrelated] successfully in the past also.

Seeking:
I'm very open, but approach things more on smaller parts/details since most know what they want for an overall story. I like to help when people are painted into a corner or want to avoid cliche' - or even have minor character issues. I’m flexible as far as style goes; believing in story and substance over fluff and infodumps. There isn’t necessarily a wrong way to write a novel, and I do my best to see the story through the eyes of the author...even if I have twists or takes of my own to offer up (not that I expect any of my ideas to be employed).

Past Mentor Experience:
One year I successfully helped two people through the Nano process (at least that's what they told me) in an unofficial capacity; which brought me to the mentor area the following year [2010]. I had two officially that year and a few unofficially. Since I had success, I’m back again for another prodigy, padawan, or whatnot. There are advantages for having someone in the same state or country, but anything is fine with me.

Additional Info:
My profile links to various writing (shorts and former Nano chapters) in case anyone wants insight or has curiosity. Feel free to Nanomail me if interested; or even just to say hi (I’m always eager to add writing buddies). I am available by email, instant messenger, Skype, and even our region’s IRC channel. I usually require little sleep to survive, so I can try to cater to another’s schedule. Please ask anything else you wish to know.

I'd love to take on a newbie! I'm Christine, and this is my 8th NaNo. I've decided to be a rebel this year and do a graphic novel in the 50,000 word challenge just got too easy for me, and I've been wanting to write another comic for a while. This is my motivation year. ;-)

My usual genres are either humor/science fiction/comedy or more angsty literary fiction, with the former being my favorite. I love characters, so I'm very much a character-driven writer who loves dialogue. My favorite authors are Jim Butcher (wish I had read more of his stuff!), Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams, and JK Rowling. (I will admit to being a huge Potterhead.)

As a mentor... First, I have a bad habit of forgetting which forums I post on, so sending me a message to let me know you want to be my newbie is much appreciated! I'm very much a listening ear or prod-you-with-a-stick person. NaNo has been one of my favorite experiences for close to a decade, so I love to see others succeed.

I'm Squeak, a 20-something college student who successfully completed NaNo last year by finishing my manuscript at 72k words before the end of the month.

I write fast when others are writing with me. I keep odd hours and check my NaNoMail three to five times a day. I send mail every other day, if not daily. Your progress will not go unnoticed!

I write fantasy or young adult fiction but read all genres and appreciate all of it. In a story, anything goes.

I write outside of November with the intent to submit for publication.

I keep charts of my progress in addition to my writing buddies. Last year, six of my eight buddies made it to the 50k goal.

I'm looking for newbies who are serious about their writing and will continue working even when the website isn't tracking the wordcount. Shoot me a NaNoMail if you think you'd be interested in racing to the finish line with me. :D

Re: Mentors looking for newbies

Hi Newbies! I'm a mentor who "specializes" in pantsing (i.e. flying by the seat of your pants, i.e. without much of a plan) and doing things at the last minute...because that's what I did the last two years. Both times I decided at the very last minute that I was going to do Nanowrimo at all (I think it was around October 27 my first year)--but I made it, at the very last minute, both times.

I write historical fantasy, mostly, and sometimes sci-fi (the dystopian kind not the starships and aliens kind), and sometimes straight-up fantasy or straight-up historical fiction. I have only once successfully written a story that contained magic (I once tried to write about a wizard but then he turned out to be a fake). I like stories with magic in them, but I guess my subconscious doesn't want to write about it, so somehow I never do. I read...pretty much the same kinds of stories I write. Guy Gavriel Kay, Megan Whalen Turner, Catherine Fisher, George R. R. Martin, and Lloyd Alexander are a few favorites.

As a mentor, I see myself as a sounding board for ideas, a source for advice on the fastest recipes to make to increase writing time and how to cut your household chores time in half (only do half of them, the rest can wait for next week), and a source for a good scolding when you get distracted by the forums and need a kick in the butt to get you back to work. I will email/message back and forth frequently, although less so on the weekends since I don't have internet at home and have to go to a library for it. I don't chat/IM, sorry.

I have one newbie already and can take 2 more, let's say. I like most genres, with the exception of fanfiction and romance, which I don't read or enjoy enough to offer valuable feedback or encouragement on.

One final note: you may have noticed on these forums that there is a certain style of doing Nanowrimo that embraces random ninjas thrown into the story to boost the wordcount or sudden velociraptors appearing and eating a floundering cast of characters. This is fine--it's not my place to cast aspersions on a harmless pleasure, much less one that has people writing!--but it's not my style. I'd prefer to lose with a coherent story than win with ninjas (not meant as a value judgement, just my preference). If you're a ninja-style writer, you'll probably find a more supportive mentor in someone else.

Re: Mentors looking for newbies

Hi! I'm Erin. I'm an eighteen-year-old college sophomore, and this is my third NaNo. (I won the first two, and I am so excited for the third.)

I'm generally a Young Adult writer, and inside that genre, I focus on science fiction and fantasy, (though I also write a lot of suspense, too). I'm willing to read just about anything; although. I'll just probably be most helpful to another YA author. I'm willing to be just about any type of mentor you'd like. I can prod you with a stick every five minutes or just send notes whenever. You can bounce ideas off me whenever you want or simply complain to me whenever you're stuck. I'm a pretty good listener. (I'll probably also end up in some kind of long involved back and forth NaNomail/email conversation with you at some point, because I love talking to people from other parts of the country/world. Just warning you.) I'm usually up till all hours of the night writing during NaNo, so if you're a night owl on Pacific or Mountain time, we will get along quite well. (Also, if you're from say, England, and a morning person, I'll also be one when you are.)

You can check my profile to learn more about me and my book for this year. I was going to type it out here, but I just realized it's already only one click away. Anyway, if you want a night owl, slightly insane, YA writing (though anything reading) mentor, you can contact me through NaNomail, (I tend to check it obsessively the closer we get to November.) I hope I hear from some of you soon!

Why do you want me to mentor you? I am not very comforting during your moments of distress, which does not mean that I won't enjoy a hearty laughter at your 'writer's block' and confess that mine is equally disastrous.
I'm a good time, though, if you catch me at the right time. I talk about what comes to mind and I can be brutally honest to you about your issues, be they writing-related or not.

Hello, my name is Rachel. I'm a senior in college and am actually graduating at the end of this quarter, which is both exciting and terrifying. I'm twenty-two years old and will be twenty-three in January.

This is my third year of NaNo, and I won both times before. I'm an overachiever, but I don't have to mentor other NaNo overachievers, but I can mentor them. I prefer writing Young Adult, but I plan to write Middle Grade in the future. I can mentor someone who is writing a different type of genre, too, however.

I can try to be any type of mentor that you need. I have no problem encouraging you to write more or to listen to any problems you might be having during November. I will probably be on the NaNo boards a lot come November, since NaNoWriMo is my life.

Hello! Solunar here and this will be my 4th Nano. I've won all past 3 years and also this year's July camp, and I plan on doing it again.

My genres of expertise are fantasy, science fiction, and erotica. I write a lot of graphic male on male erotica on an almost daily basis, but leave most of my lengthier novels to the modern fantasy genre. My first year was fantasy, second was erotica and third year was modern fantasy. This year, I'll be finishing up my July camp novel, including editing, and also taking on a new modern fantasy novel. The plot has yet to be worked out, though I do have a fairly good idea of the setting and some of the characters.

I was involved in a reprimanding thread for the past few years where I dished out harsh words to spur fellow writers on. If you need that, a listening ear, someone to help with brainstorming, or even just to word war, I'm up for it! I've also heard I'm good at straightening out plot knots and plot holes. I think it'll be best to use Skype for mentoring, though nanomail could work as well. I'm in the GMT +8 zone. Oh, and I'm 23 this year.

Hey there! My name is Dane and this is my second 'official' year doing Nano, having won last year. I would be happy to take on a newbie or two and share whatever I can! I'm 30 and live in the arid state of Minnesota. And I'm more than willing to take on newbies from any part of the globe.

I typically stick around the Literary Fiction camp, but don't have any problem delving off into other genres as needed. I wish I had a concrete plot or idea to drive the direction of the story, but more often than not it seems I create characters and let them drive the story wherever it seems appropriate (which might explain the genre hopping at times).

I'm more than willing to lend a listening ear, encouraging words, bounce ideas off of, meet up for a writing session, send harassing emails or donate a kidney if need be (*before someone actually takes me up on the kidney thing I should probably check with my wife...).

Please feel free to PM me if you're interested. Cool beans.

French the Llama! How have I not filled out a newbie request yet?!

Anyway, I'm Erin -- if you couldn't tell from my user name -- and this year will be my 8th year participating in NaNo. I've won all but two of the years I have participated and intend to add this year to the list of years won. I do have to point out that I am habitually an "overachiever," and intended to shoot for more than the 50k base goal this year as well. Sometimes this upsets and discourages people, so I wanted to make sure I was upfront about it.

I'm 25 and live in Central Florida. I do work a full time job, so I'm not always available constantly, but due to the blessing of smartphones, I have constant email access and will answer as soon as I possibly can. I, personally, prefer email / IM conversations over NaNoMail or having a "group" thread on the clubs / groups, but whatever is comfortable for you will probably be perfectly okay for me, too.

Writing wise, I tend to stick fairly close to the romance world. Even this year, while working on an AU video game RPG [fantasy based] of my normal universe, there will be a romance element in the story. I have dabbled in a fair amount of genres and usually read YA or thriller books. My sci-fi is a bit weak, so if you're doing that and think you're going to be needing someone to sci-fi check you, I'm probably not your ideal fit. My strong point is character development and description, though, so if that's what you're looking for... NaNoMail me. (:

If any of that ramble sounds like someone you'd like to get to know, NaNoMail me and we'll chat!

Hi Mel
Hope I can contact you as the month goes by? I tried Nano a couple of years ago but only made around 1500 words before I got hopelessly sidetracked. This year I am determined to give it a proper go (as it were). I am going to write a novel for 9-12 years (or 8-11 depending on which publisher you checkout). Like you I seem to gravitate to children's writing and so wishing you luck to complete your novel as well.

Hey Newbies! I'm Julia, aka Chocolate-And-Duct-Tape (rather long to type, I know, so therefore: Julia) and this is my third year of NaNo. I've won two years in a row (ee!) and hope to get attain that glittering 50k mark once more. :3 I'm mid-late teens, so if you're older and have a problem with dealing with the young'uns I'm probably not the best choice, but that's only if you're grouchy. I am very mature and dislike text speak, for the most part, though I am fond of emoticons, so... :D I'm in EST, if that helps any.

Like I said, this is my third year. The last years, I wrote historical fiction, but this year I'm taking a stab at fantasy and I also write sci-fi, humor, etc. I'm just not so great at thrilly sort of things, and let's keep it appropriate. :D I think I'm pretty good with grammar and coming up with character names and random plot twists. I also have virtual cookies, entertaining HP photos, and I'll make you a book cover. :3 You pay in words. As for what kind of mentor - I prod with large sticks and beat with keyboards and shower with fluffy declawed kittens. If you aren't looking for a mentor who will yell at you to get your minimum word count per day and then, hypocritically, doesn't get her own, then don't send me a pm! c:

Anyway, i'll just be taking one newbie, so please do message me! Julia out.

Hey Everyone, I'm Kyra.

This is my third Nanowrimo (4th Nanoevent) and I won my first nano and came close last year but was very pregnant with morning sickness, so I didn't quite make it. I'm back this year with a 9 month old in tow and *another* baby on the way (but feeling much better this time around!).

I'm looking for mentor any Nano mommies or mommies-to-be out there who might have kids and needs that fairly specific pep-talk. I'm going to be struggling right along with you!! Between the baby stuff, the in-laws, the husband, the house, and everything in between, I get you. I really do.

If you think that you might click with me, go ahead and send me a nanomail. I'd love to be a part of your writing process! :) Best of luck to you and everyone!! It's going to be a great month!

Hi all,

My name is Jessi and I would be happy to mentor a couple of people this year. This is my third year (and fingers crossed, will be my third win!) and I could probably dispense a little bit of wisdom. Aside from wanting to help get you through the month and to the 50K goal, I love plotting and planning and would be happy to brainstorm. Dialogue is one of my favorite things about writing, so that is something I could certainly help with. I do have a full time job, so most of my correspondence would be after 5PM Central Time. As for what type of mentor I'd be, I can always adjust to what your needs are - prodding and poking, or just the occasional check in, whatever you wish. No matter your preference, I will definitely keep track of your word count, and if it looks like you're slipping I'd be sure to drop a note of encouragement. As for what genre I write, this year it'll be rather sci-fi, last year it was adventure/suspense and the year before that I did a children's fantasy. Send me a NaNoMail if you'd like me to mentor you.

Are you still accepting newbies? I'm signing-up for this pretty much last minute and trying to grasp the basics. I'll admit some hand-holding might be nice.
For this go at things, I'll be writing romance. My "Hero" is in sports medicine, and I know diddly-squat about sports. Go figure. I'm not opposed to research, but admit seeing you write sports caught my attention.

I'm 40, live in Iowa, and am both eager and confident in approaching my first full NaNo. (I did the mini on LJ last year.)
If you have any questions for me, feel free to ask.

Re: Mentors looking for newbies

I've found myself with a lot of free time this november and as such I thought it might be fun to take on a newbie or two. I'm 23. This is my fourth nano, having won all three prior. I mainly write in fantasy (young adult and adult) and a little in science fiction, but with a degree in history I could probably help with historical or time travel. I am quite good at finding online history resources.

As for mentoring style, I have no idea. I will likely poke you with a large stick kind if you fall behind, and I am all about encouraging when you're out of hope. I am definitely willing to help answer any questions or help with plot tangles. I'm not much into chatting so it'll be silent on that front.

Re: Mentors looking for newbies

My name is H. R. Holt. I have completed each Nano since starting in 2007, each year choosing a different genre - sci-fi (2007); mainstream (2008); fantasy (2009); and a western (2010). This year, I intend to do a fantasy/adventure story that is more adventure than fantasy. I have as yet to write a Nano that doesn't involve romance in some aspect, and doubt that will ever be the case. Still, I am rather open to whatever genre a newbie needs help with. I adopted last year and it ran smoothly, so I'm hoping to help someone this year.

Though age is but a number, the question was posed, so I answer: I am 25-years-old. However, I care not for the age of the newbie needing my assistance. After all, if you're drowning, it doesn't matter who saves you as long as you're saved, correct? Location is often a state of mind for most writers, but, when I crawl unwillingly to reality, I find that I reside in Georgia (US). My abilities aren't exceptional in most regards, though I have been noted to be a particularly skilled editor, often unable - even during Nano - to resist the backspace key. A fatal flaw during a most demanding month, I know, but I've managed to complete the task in the past without much of a hindrance.

As for the type of mentor I am, I tend to be calm and patient, but, if the newbie begins slacking, then I more than prod with a stick - I beat them with it. Well, figuratively, anyway. I ask how their life is going, the plot of their story, pointers on how to get unstuck, etc. I have been writing since I was eleven, so I know a few ways to help others along.

I am open to two newbies...

Re: Mentors looking for newbies

Hey I am Boupie and I am looking for mentees (or manatees... not sure which at this point). As you can see I have already lost my mind and NaNo has not even started yet, but I think that is one of my skills. I am 28 and going into my 6th or 7th year with NaNo. I have won all but one or two... maybe just the one, there have been so many I forget sometimes. I am not published, nor have I ever tried to be, these novels are just exercises for me while I really develop my style. I generally write a genre-bender, which can include literary fiction, mystery, sci-fi/fantasy, and a little bit of historical fiction. I am obsessed with science and space so that is something that always shows up in my novels. I have mentored and run YWL for my high schoolers for a few years now but am taking the year off this year (our English department has taken over the program at our school).

I would love a couple mentees who are open to positive encouragement but who might need poking weekly or daily. I have lots of hints and tips and love giving my mentees some goodies to help them succeed. I am a high school teacher so I will have more time on the weekends and school holidays but can poke during the week. Nanomail me with what you need from me and we will see if this works. Good luck this year!

Wow, guys, I've received a lot of mentor requests over the last couple weeks! And I'm sorry to say it, but it looks like I'm not going to be able to take on any more newbies this year beyond the ones I've already confirmed.
Re: Mentors looking for newbies

Hi all!

Don't be afraid, I've got cookies!

I'm The Evil Queen of Words, 25 years old (give or take a few million years) and for the sake of this post, let's say I am currently residing in the Netherlands. Your human brain wouldn't be able to process the name of my real location anyway.

I have been doing NaNoWriMo for eight years now and have won the last four times. I also write the entire thing by hand (of which I may or may not have more than two) and I firmly believe this is what has been helping me win. Having participated for the last eight years also means I know every excuse there is. I have used all of them myself.

For the last three years I have been mentoring newbies, so I can quite clearly state what I will and will not do should you choose me as your mentor.

I will:

- Help you get used to the chaotic mess that is NaNoWriMo and the website that goes with it;
- Answer any questions you may have and give bits of advice that may or may not be useful;
- Help you through the rough patches you will undoubtedly encounter and motivate you in any way I can;
- Do wordwars (if you like) and have lots of fun.

I will not:

- Force you to write against your will. I will try to motivate you, but if you disappear halfway through November, I won't keep trying to get you back to writing. You don't have to if you don't want to;
- Make you cause a tear in the fabric of reality, causing Things from the Dungeon Dimensions to come to our side. It was an honest mistake last time and just because we haven't heard anything from that newbie doesn't mean anything bad happened.

So, if you want me as your mentor, let me know! We'll get to 50k together. That's a promise.

Hey all! Well, it's just a few minutes before NaNo starts, and I imagine there are a few of you running around screaming and having no idea what to do (that was me last year!). So, I figured I'd drop by and offer to mentor a few of you newbies. :)

So, my name is Laura. *waves through computer screen* I'm fifteen, I've written three novels and completed one NaNo. I write YA, mainly Urban Fantasy and some Epic. (If you were just completely confused by that last sentence, never fear! By the end of this month, you'll know all those terms.)

I'm part of two writing groups, and I help to "mentor" a lot of people there. So, I'm used to helping people along as they start their writing adventures. I can be very encouraging if a person needs it, but I'm also highly capable of prodding people with electric cattle prods when needed. :)

So send me a message if you'd like for me to mentor you!

Hi! I'm Matt/Nin and this is my fifth Nanowrimo and planning this to be the fifth win!
This is my second year offering to be a mentor and here are some random facts:

-25 years old
-Graduate student studying religion and philosophy with the goal of being a professor one day.
-Huge fan of Doctor Who (Old and New)
-Life long fan of fantasy, sci-fi as well as RPG's (Computer, console and tabletop)
-I would gladly sell the whole world for a good Greek Salad and/or sushi.
-Have yet to actually finish editing any of my novels because of enjoying helping other people's stories too much.

Genres I've written and have experience in:
-Urban Fantasy
-Traditional Fantasy
-Modern Horror (Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos in the 21st century)
-Cyberpunk
-Steampunk

I also enjoy helping friends edit, develop plot and scenes from everything that has included military fiction, supernatural horror and historical fiction.

The number I am shooting for is for 3-5 newbies and would like to set up an off site email (doesn't have to be a primary if you like privacy) so that we have a small group for interacting with one another to bounce ideas, random thoughts and have as much fun as we can with this insane, but doable, task!

As far as being a mentor goes, if I haven't heard from you within one or two days I'll email you to see what is going on. I don't normally drag, guilt, push or shove...but I am willing and wanting to listen to plot problems and help figure out ways to get you back writing.

Good luck everyone and hope to see the lot of you at the finish line! ^_^

I'll offer up mentoring with the disclaimer that I do not meet the main qualification to be a mentor here: having past experiencing doing NaNoWriMo. Familiar with it and hanging around it for a while, but this is my first year participating. So not much of an expert in the field.

What I do know well: writing quickly, writing much, query letter writing, finding publishing outlets, pitching books and shorts, writing screenplays, producing films, doing research for writing, working with editors, working with critique groups, working with publishers.

If you have questions about writing fiction or the independent publishing business, including small presses and self-publishing, I'll do my best to give you helpful feedback.

My own writing and areas of interest include contemporary and historical fiction, World War One, early Hollywood, the Klondike Gold Rush, gay history and civil rights, middle grade and young adult fiction, and just about anything that's very dark/depressing in story and tone. And dogs. Ask me anything about dogs, past or present.

Feel free to NaNoMail me.

Re: Mentors looking for newbies

UPDATE:

I have had six victim..-er newbies answer my call to march through the wilds this November, to explore strange new territories, frighting amounts of caffeine consumption, putting off asinine amount of chores and to boldly go where several thousand other Nanowrimo's have gone!

At this point I don't think I could fairly keep up with everyone. If by chance someone needs some random advice, encouragement and/or reminder that they are insane for doing this (but it's okay because we all our) I can try to reply but cannot promise I will be able to keep up and keep track.

So long and thanks for all the (literary) fish!

Hi! I'm Liz, I'm 176 and looking for a newbie to mentor. Hopefully someone around my age haha! This is my second year doing NaNo, but I'd like to try my hand at it.

I can help pretty well with writers who prefer suspense/thriller or romance, or if you just need help getting the first few pages and then be off on your merry writing way I can help with that as well.

So, if you need me, just contact me through NaNo and I'll try and get back to you as fast as I can..... Thanks!
XOXO,
Liz<3

I am looking to adopt a newbie this year.
My name is Ashley-Lane and I have been writing wit NaNoWriMo since 2005... (my profile says 2004 but i don't count that since i wrote under a different name) I have continually gotten better with my writing and I am all about helping others get better with theirs.
I am looking to mentor someone who is mainly into Romance and/or Erotica as that is what I write best but I am willing to help anyone who needs it.
I am the ML of the Fayetteville region in North Carolina and we have a wonderful little chat room that you would be more than welcome to join! We also have a supper awesome guest speaker who will be dropping by for a while! I'm supper excited about that.
Any who, drop me a nanomail if your interested.

Hi everyone!

I'm 27 and a teacher who decided to go back to school for more book learnin'.
As far as writing, I enjoy writing with a sense of humor, satire, but also like writing stories with a dark twist. (Ex. A non-nano project I'm working on is a murder thriller.)

This is my fifth year doing nano and I've won once before.

I have several friends involved in Nanowrimo this year (whom I know in real life) and we regularly check in with each other.

At the most, I could handle only two mentees since this is a bit of a crazy month for me.

Feel free to send me a message via Nanomail.

Re: Mentors looking for newbies

I'm Maya and this is my 2nd nano. I didn't win last year, but I learned a lot about putting my all into writing. I've been writing since I learned how, and telling stories before that, but I've never written as long a story as I did during nano. Write-or-Die is my saving grace.

I write a lot of fantasy and romance, with elements of horror and action. I'll be the sort of mentor where you ask me whatever you need (support, questions, anything) and I'll help you out however I can, but you'll usually need to contact me first as I get pretty busy.

I also love knitting, photography, music, dancing, and anything else in the arts.

I know this is late, but I would love a mentee!

I'm Essie, and this will be my fifth NaNoWriMo! I'm eighteen and this is my first year of college as an Undecided (but leaning towards English) major, so anyone looking for college advice or just trying to make it through high school would feel more than welcome with me!

I like to jump around the board in my writing, including but not limited to historical fiction, science fiction, fantasy, and literary fiction. Also, steampunk. <3

I really enjoy bouncing ideas and editing, and would love to have someone to share ideas and experiences with!

Feel free to NaNoMail me; don't be shy! I look forward to spending a fantastic month with you and beyond! =)

Hi hi, everyone! My name is Amanda and I'll be 26 at the end of the month. I've been doing NaNo on and off since 2004, and consistently since 2008. I've written a little bit of everything, although most of my stuff seems to fall into the YA category. For Camp this year I'm working on my first Middle Grade piece, and November might be when I work on the next book in the series. We'll see.

I live on Vancouver Island, which is on the west coast of Canada. Timezone at the time of NaNo is Pacific Standard and I keep pretty regular hours - I work a regular Monday to Friday job at a law firm and check emails/messages as often as I can. I'd love to take on a couple of newbies and answer whatever questions they may have and maybe give a little kick in the pants when they're lagging.
