I'm Patrise and am taking the challenge for the first time this year!

I'm and artist, gardener, locavore, and entrepreneur living in Southern Maryland. I have 2 standard poodles and a cat for companions, drink a lot of coffee and live in the woods.

I've been writing small fiction in various fandoms for about 5 years. I wrote a lot when I was a kid, and writing got me through school, but many adult years have expired since I took it seriously. That's about to change!

Hi!
I'm Emily and I am madly trying to get work done on my WIP to make room for NaNoWriMo in my life...SUPER excited!
I am juggling work, husband and kids & dogs and will be 41 in December. It will be nice to "finish" a novel before I'm done being 40, I guess.

My focus will be writing of 1667+ words a day --be they good, bad or ugly.

Good luck, Maniacs!

Welcome Emily,

This is my first too!
I'm anxious and kinda nervous lol.
I have to take an unexpected trip out of the country for a week...Nov 6 to Nov 12, it'll be the first time I take my laptop on a trip with me...yikkes.
Do have an outline of what you'll be writing?

I'm Becky, and this is my first year attempting NaNoWriMo, although my writing group has been talking about it (and many doing it) for over ten years now. I currently live in Jacksonvile, North Carolina (USA), but my family is all from Minnesota and/or the New Jersey/New England area. I've travelled extensively, and hope to bring some unique perspectives to this, my first attempt at writing anything longer than a graduate school thesis. LOL :)

I love photography, genealogy, anything related to psychology and science, juggling, reading, and in my "ample" spare time I do some yoga. Somewhat difficult to do with fibromyalgia, but I manage nonetheless. :) I'm the Vocational Rehabilitation director for a large nonprofit organization specializing in putting adults with disabilities to work in community placements, so I keep pretty busy. I'm also married, with a ten year old daughter.

So I'm trying to branch out from my usual stomping grounds of poetry and journaling now...we'll see what inspiration comes my way! Looking forward to the journey! :)

Hi there! I'm Ros, I'm twenty-seven years old, originally from just outside Boston, MA and currently living just outside of NYC. I have "participated" in NaNo many times, though I put this in quotes and am here on the Newbie board because all of my previous attempts were abandoned in Week 1 if not earlier. Somehow, the little voice in my head that says how I'm a pathetic, talentless hack always wins out in the end.

This is year I silence that voice, once and for all.

So here I am, though I'm certain that I've lost my mind. This year (and November in particular) is so busy for me it's not even funny, but I am also motivated and driven in a way I have never been before. I work full time, I have two little girls under the age of 4, and I'm getting married on November 11. I know, I know. When will I have time to write?! But whether or not I reach 50,000 I am DETERMINED to stick it out and not give up. Come hell or high water, I will make it to November 30. Even if it kills me.

I have no idea what I'll be writing yet, but I'm gonna be brainstorming and outlining for the next few weeks, and I am super pumped about sharing this journey with you all. ^_^ Good luck everyone!

I'm Nicolette and I've attempted NaNo before but never quite got out of the gate. This year is my year to actually do this shiz!

I've been writing since I was probably around 6 or 7. The past few years my writing has unfortunately been pushed to the back burner as I've tried to muddle through college (yeah, still not done after 5 years...sigh) and supporting myself. I've recently reignited my love for creating and am determined to see this thing through.

Other fun facts:I'm 23 and live in Philly, which is currently a love/hate thing. I have two part time jobs that generally allow me to have quite a bit of free time to write. I'm a junior cat lady, with four furry buddies who are all going to be rooting for me come November 1st. ;)

Hello all, I'm James AKA Nomad Jim in Shefield looking forward to trying for the big 50,000 next month... now all I need is an idea, eek!! :)

I've been trying to focus more on my writing recently and NaNoWriMo sounds like the perfect way to get my concentration skills in order and get me writing rather than thinking (too much).

Now, where was I? Argh, I've drifted off again!!! ;)

I'm Jasmine and I am finally taking the courage to conquer nanwrimo challenge for the first time.

Now I could write a novel anytime of the year, but never have I set out a goal to write the novel. So doing this in one month and the feeling of accomplishment at the end of the month feels very motivating. There are the chances our there and many forces that will try to stop me, but I won't let them win.

I'm Melanie and I'm quaking in my boots as this is the 1st year Im trying this. I write short stories mostly.

I live in Cheshire, England and have 3 ideas and Im not sure which one to chosse! One is a historical based on basic facts about a person who lived. One is a timeslip, modern day person is completely fictional but past character is a real person and the 3rd idea is a supernatural story. Ive been writing notes on all 3 ideas for a couple of years so its just case of chossing one and going with it.

Which one to chose?

I like the idea of the time slip one. That way you can invoke humour and adventure. Having the modern world to fall back on would also make your life a lot easier if you get stuck.

I'm also working on a split time novel which is a version of a timeslip. However, I've decided to write about something totally different for Nano because my particular novel has quite a complicated plot and would take much longer to write. The one I'm going to do instead was originally a short story which I am adapting into a novel (my idea was originally meant to be a novel anyway).
I think you should write whichever one has the simplest plot.

This is my first year trying this so I'm really nervous about it. I am a lab tech who writes a political blog that I use to prevent me from ripping my hair out.

I have multiple novels I have gotten started over the course of my life, but after about 5,000 to 10,000 words I lose intrest and give up on them. I hope that by having the 1 month deadline in november it will motivate me to squeak out those majical 50,000 words.

completely new to NaNo, but grew tired of being this "one-day event" novelist...
Will turn 40 just before the end of NaNo, from France but now in China, where all Nanos are spread all over, so no "groups, intro dinners, write-ins" or any other super motivational get-togethers for me! I'm on my own and feeling lonely already!
Have no idea how I will fit NaNo into my life but excited and raring to go anyway.

Hi!
I'm Ruth and I introduced myself in the wrong place (d'oh)!

I work as a supervisor at Lush in Leicester, UK and I live in an urban village in Leicestershire with my parents, as I'm still far too skint to move into my own place. I have an older brother who lives in Dublin.

I trained as a reporter but sucked at most of my exams and lost the love for journalism, which is a little sad, but I've always been more interested in writing fiction - and I've had a novel on the go for best part of three years, when the muse comes and goes.

I drink a shocking amount of tea and get most of my inspiration out of the blue, or from strange conversations with friends.

I *will* get to 50,000 words...or more!

Hi, I'm Lisa and I'm brand-spanking new to Nano. My younger daughter first told me about it a few years ago, but this is the first time I've taken any steps to participate.

I believe at heart, I'm a thwarted writer. I'm working as an accountant (CPA, no less), and the main obstacle to anything other than work is, well, work. I tend to be a workaholic, and give short shrift to everything else. So joining this venture and attending live events will help me a lot, I think, if I CAN MANAGE TO LEAVE WORK AND GET TO THEM! Really, I'm quite stupid about it.

Currently, the only writing I do is a blog, which has given me some great feedback and more importantly, satisfaction.

Living in Arkansas, I've not found a lot of kindred souls, but truly, that is probably because of me (and some personal circumstances-see paragraph 2 and my blog). I'm hoping to change things up, and look forward to this challenge.

My goal is teeny-tiny: go to the kick off party in my area, and write everyday. That's it.

I am Cassie. I have no idea what I am doing on here, but for some reason I have this notion in my brain that someday I will actually get paid for doing something I love. yeah, go figure.

I am 27, and 14 months. Live in the big, dry, and hot state of Texas, yes it is still hot in October. Our "cool front" yesterday brought it down to a high in the mid 80's! It's feeling like October already...I am a newly-wed, newly-grad, and insta-mom. All in the course of a year, the same year I've decided to write my first novel.

I was talking to my husband and we decided I should get writing about the same time I found NANOMRIMO! It was serendipity for sure. I have so many ideas for wonderful novels, and so many journals full of those ideas. Now I have something to do with them.

I would love advice, support from the Nanowrimo-Pros, and anything else that is offered here. I have this feeling that this may be the end of my sanity, however I am fully committed to having a novel at the end of the month.

Let's see....I love all things, I would garden, craft, write, read, bike, and swim every day of my life if I could. I think for the month of November I will just be writing mostly...I'm an open book-say hello, and let's get this thing going!

Much love, all!

Last year I found out about NaNoWriMo through one of my friends who actually did the challenge and immediately started working on a novel in October. And then I found out about the rules, so I slapped myself and decided to put that away. This year I'm not going to do any of that sort xD I promise!

I must admit I am a bit nervous: I have my national's competition for marching band in November, my birthday in November, my driving permit test in November, a very good friend of mine's birthday in November, Thanksgiving, school... x.x You get the point. Though one of the things that come with this experience (well that I'm hoping will come) will be the pleasure of actually finishing a writing piece as well as exploring sides of writing I've never explored before...

Anyway, I live in New Jersey annnnd I'm seriously excited for November to come and in case nobody noticed yet I love to babble :D

Good luck everybody~ n.n Don't completely go insane.

I find i can write action more then romance, i dont know why....i love Primeval and have done quite a few primeval fics and enjoy them more....so kinda fantasy/dinosaur/action/magic is my type of genre....not really had much luck with chick flicks, prefer to read them rather then write them.

Hi, I'm Grammy Blick, from Texas, and though I've watched for a couple of years, this is my first time to take the challenge -- and I'm not writing fiction. Well, some might call it so, but it's a bit of family history and I require the accountability to write it all down in an organized, readable, interesting format.

So, NaNo will be my accountability site - not only to actually sit down and accomplish the writing, but to reach the 50,000 words. Then next year I can come back and write Maggie Rockinson's story. She's a fictional character that's been bugging me for months now to tell hers, too. But, mine comes first!

I SHALL win, but of course I need to put GCSEs and homework first *sigh*.

I have never really finished a PROPER book before. Only mini short stories. My friends think I'm really weird at school when I take my notebook out and start writing. They don't understand my passion. I'm doing Nano this year with my cousin Naomi, and I'm going to persuade some of my friends to do I think as well.

I have been a life long reader of books, particularly novels of adventure and fantasy. I have written stories for my own enjoyment since childhood, but never completed anything worth saving. That is about to change!

I've recently become involved with an awesome Role-playing group of very creative people in an MMO game, called Dungeons and Dragons Online, and writing a Journal is part of what we do. Perhaps, if I can write about a fantasy character, in a fantasy world, I can write a coherent novel in the same manner.

Hi All!

I'm Deanna. This is my first year trying the NaNoWriMo challenge, and boy am I intimidated (but still excited)!

I'm a sophomore in college, pursuing double degrees in Genetics and Biological Anthropology. I love watching TV and movies, but have recently been speeding through books, which has rekindled my love of writing. I've attempted novels in the past, but never got very far. I have quite a stack of poems that I'm proud of, though!

A couple years back I came up with an idea for a fantasy novel, with the help of my little brother, but never did anything with it, so, after hearing about NaNoWriMo, I've decided to give it a go!

Writing has been a huge part of my upbringing, being the granddaughter of a published author, and having a mother who's written several books that will hopefully be published in coming years! Writing is a part of me, so, despite my many failed attempts, I'm eager to pump something out! It is my hope that NaNoWriMo provides me with the extra push I seem to need!

Good luck to you all, and here we go!

Hi, I'm Valerie. I have been writing all my life, actually have published a small work of non-fiction, a memoir of my mother's journey through a terminal illness. That piece took me 26 years to finish...

I know I have a novel in me, and I'm ready to try to get it out. I'm library media specialist at a small independent school in Washington State. It makes for a busy work schedule, which should make November interesting... I going to write a historical fiction piece - I have my main character, based on a shirt-tail relative from my husband's family who has fascinated me for years. I have been gifted with stuff, mementos, photos and diaries from her life, so the fuel is all there! There are many gaps and a couple of mysteries in her story, which makes me feel as if it could be very exciting to create one for her.. Don't know what life will hand me in the month of November, but here we go!

Hello, I'm Ellie. I write deprssing poems and wierd little blips only my grandad takes seriously.

This is my first year doing NaNo, my friends tried last year and I am joining them now. Funnily enough the moment I began planning my plot bunnies moved out but finally I have dragged one kicking and screaming out of the pile of fluff at the back of my brain and forced it to give me a nice, detailed plot for November. By day three it will have run away.
I WILL write 50 000 words. I can't promise they will make sense or even be legible but I will write them.

This will be my first year participating in NaNo, and I have to admit that I'm scared to death. :)

I'm currently working on my fourth novel, and it's coming along way too slowly for my liking, so I'm hoping this will be the motivation I need (and I'm really hoping my two-year-old is cooperative).

Hello everyone!

I'm Andy and this is my first time taking the challenge! I am very excited to get moving on it!

My biggest concern is: Am I able to write a screenplay for this challenge, compared to a novel? Both are word-based and creative in their own ways. I hope writing a screenplay would be acceptable since there is no NaScreeWriMo event happening ever!

I'll be tackling a new job, a rigorous weight-loss routine as well as this new endeavor and I am eager for success on all fronts!

My name is Pamela and I always have ideas for stories rolling around in my head. I have never written a complete novel before and I imagine it will take me quite some time before I am good at it.
That said, this is me:
I am 43 years old with a husband and 3 kids. I'm originally from Utah, but have lived in Vermont and am currently in Oklahoma. I am a ballet director and love all things ballet. I can't listen to music without choreographing in my head, so i try to save it for work and have learned to enjoy the sound of a clattering keyboard. My kids make fun of me for pushing so hard on the keys but i learned to type old-school when you actually had to put some effort into depressing the key to make it smack the letter on the page. I have been managing carpal tunnel syndrome for 12 years, not because of typing, but because I am a prolific knitter. I also love books, movies, and tv shows without commercial interruption(thank you netflix). I have several people in my support system who encourage me to write, but ultimately I know it is up to me!

Hello to everyone! :) I am Tessa and a newbie, though I have been planning to do this since last year.

I only realized how much I loved making a world out of a paper and pencil when I was in the 6th grade, that was a great day. Now I write all the time, my writing is 80% poetry and I am psyched (and a little anxious) to be trying a full out novel.

I love sunshine, the ocean, walking outside, reading, sketching and living my life.

Most people I have talked to think I am crazy to do this, and you know, I think they are right. But all writers are a bit on the insane side, I think. We are the people who color the world with stories and ideas.

Of course we are loony!
So, Let the madness begin!

Hey, I'm Cheri, and I found out about this yesterday from a friend's blog. I've always loved to write and I've dreamed of writing a book, but never seemed to make the time for it. I am 30, a SAHM of a beautiful and active 15 month old boy, so I'm not 100% sure I'll make the goal, but he usually lets me spend a couple hours on the computer a day, plus he has naptime, so maybe it'll happen.

I live in Missouri with my husband and my son, and our lives will be changing very soon, so this may be the last "quiet" time I have for awhile and my best chance to get a habit of writing little everyday started.

A bit about myself:

-I also love drawing and photography and crafts. I am an origami nut as well.
-My favorite band is Coldplay, so they are my go to writing soundtrack :)
-I basically have no idea what I'm doing!

So, what's it going to be? I'm going to try. Empasis on TRY for 50,000. I will not suffer sleepless nights to do it, I will not slack in my studies. They are the most important!
But I really want this, so watch out! I'll be writing my little heart out here :)

While, I'm really nervous to start NaNoWriMo for the first time this year, I'm also really excited. I not only want to write to novel, I want to see how I do with it. Hi,

I've been working on a complicated split-time novel for over 20 years, so to write a novel in a month is a big challenge! I'm adapting a short story into a novel and plan to just let it flow and resist my natural instinct to edit and polish as I go!
I work as an Estate Agent and have written short stories and poetry for years. I also used my flair for rhyming to write slogans for consumer competitions and have won many holidays, a car, £10K cash and other prizes too numerous to mention so I suppose I have reaped some rewards from my creative abilities already.

I never thought I'd ever do this in a million years...but here I am. lol I'm Rhonda, and this is my very first time to try this. I love stories, all kinds of stories, and have been a voracious reader all my life. As a kid, then as a teen, reading and writing were my refuges, my personal therapy, and my outlet. As I got older, life happened...married, divorced, single-mom, re-married...I started writing less and less, though my appetite for books never waned (I think my local library has me on speed dial). The stories in my head never stopped either...the difficulty has always been in getting them from my head onto paper (or these days on screen). A friend of mine told me about this (she sent me the link along with a short message: Start writing!) and I figured, hell why not?? I honestly don't know if I can do this, but I'm going to give it my best shot. (Deep breath....) Am I seriously nuts or what?? lol

Hi I'm Loraine and the first thing I did was post my introduction to the wrong place. Doh!

I took the challenge last year but it was short lived. Last year I was invested like the chicken and this year I'm hoping to be committed like the pig in a ham and egg sandwich.

I'd like to meet some friends especially those working within my genre of parody and satire. I'm supposing this is all based on the honor system because it seems anyone could write a book ahead of time. But today is day one and I've just now committed to a story line and I'm sticking to it.

Naturally, day one includes babysitting a sick child, so we will see how this goes.

I'm not a book writer. I'm a now defunct article writer and PR person but I hope that this exercise will help me get back to writing and earning some extra cash.
Best of luck to you all and here's to 50,000 words in one month!

Hello,

I'm Anouk, 36, and I study to become a librarian. I know of NaNoWriMo since a very long time, but never dared to participate, because I didn't even finish a short story. But at the moment I don't have anything good to do and I just want to see how far I get.

I already have a good plot - or at least the beginning of one - and... let's see!

I'm Kathy and I'm new to Nano. I decided to try it because I have been thinking about writing a book for a long time but I haven't been able to make myself sit down and write it. In the past I have only been able to write with deadlines (except for personal journaling) so I'm trying to impose some self discipline on myself. "They" say it takes 3 weeks to create a new habit. I don't expect to finish my novel in a month, not even the first draft, but if I can teach myself to sit down and write for a month then I can get it done eventually.

Hey, I'm Meredith and a definite newbie.

I work about sixty hours a week between jobs, but jumped at the idea to actually spend some of that free time doing something that I love. I've been out of school for about six months, and haven't written since. This seemed like a good idea to get myself started again.

50,000. Shouldn't be so bad, right?

Hi. I'm Andrea. I've no idea whether or not I'll be able to do this. I'm a professional freelance writer, but I write for other people and never myself. I really want to try my hand at this, just to be able to say I did it, but I will only be able to do it if my clients are amenable. :) Well, either that or if I write really, super-duper fast all month.

Or skip sleep.

Maybe the latter. Who knows -- maybe a lack of sleep and excessive amounts of coffee will combine to create an amazing plot and spectacular characters? Hmmm ....

We'll go with that. Yep. That's it. That's my story.

So ... good luck, everyone! Let's get to that finish line together!

Sable Aradia

Hi there, I'm Sable, and I'm also taking the challenge for the first time this year! I'm a veteran writer but I have a habit of not finishing what I start when it's a long project. I'm using this as a motivator and tangible goal-setting device and I'm hoping that the experience will give me skills that I can put to work in my other projects. Just like Patrise, I was an avid writer who lived on it as a kid, but adulthood's busy-ness and responsibilty made me lose my way. I've written a lot of articles in recent years and I maintain a blog, but novel writing is where my heart is. My current work is a fanfiction fantasy novel which I suspect will never make me a dime, but I'm writing it anyway because it's a really great story.

I have a question. I am submitting a novel I started in October. My current word count for the total novel is 26802. But I assume the goal only applies to what you've actually written in November? So I would subtract the base word count I had yesterday, which was 26130, from the total to record my word count, right? Or is it total words of the novel overall (in which case, I'm already halfway there)?

Thanks for your time!

Hey, my name's Katie, I'm 13 and I'm going to be juggling my first novel with GCSE coursework this month so it's gonna be tricky!

I live in Swindon (home of the Swindon Town Swoodilypoopers for any Nerdfighters out there) with my mum, dad and younger sister and I go to a Catholic school.

My main hobby is writing but I also take drama lessons and can play piano, guitar (a tiny bit) and most easily recorder.

I've been writing as long as I can remember and have always loved language and communication (probably explains why I'm such a chatterbox).

I have an account on Wattpad where I might post my NaNo novel. I also have some other shorts and poems up there so please go and take a look. Thanks a bunch and DFTBA!!!

Hello,
My name is Nadina, and this is my first writing on Nanowrimo, actually more like my first long novel writing. I am more into short stories, plays and poetry but this is quite a challenge.

I have begun a story which I have no idea where it will lead, for prior to that I had no intention on writing a novel that soon. But a challenge calls and I oblige the call, hoping to be up to standard.

So here, I just introduced myself and hope to hear from many authors here and get ideas and feedback on how this is working.
Thank you Nanowrimo for this opportunity and hosting us on your site, and thanks to all you writers out there.

Right then I ain't really got a clue what i've got myself into just think this will be a laugh and i'm interested in seeing where it goes. But i'm slightly confused as i'm not sure how exactly this works. do i write live online? do i copy and paste 1667 words from word onto here and post what i've got so people read as I write? do people get to read it? Is this a competition against others or myself and writers blocks? Is there a prize at the end? hahaha sorry not sure if this is the right place to ask but thought maybe the best place to get a decent idea to the answers of these questions.

Anyway i'm an 18 year old student. I write a lot but read even more. So far i have a growing collection of shorts that ive written over the years. I'm also working on the first book of a series. Not too sure what else to say so just feel free ask guys.

I just published my first short story in an anthology entitled, Disturbing. (http://amzn.to/v5ul2Q) Since that was a huge hurdle cleared for me, I though that this challenge would be the next step.

I'm Lauren.

After deciding that the only way to become a paid author was to actually strap in a write a novel, I figured NaNoWriMo was a good way to keep me accountable to at least get a good portion of work done. Plus it's credit for my Creative Writing class. Huzzah.

But anyways. I'm seventeen. I can't help but write and create art and capture beauty, be it through the pen or paintbrush or camera. I'm striving to hold onto childness and veer away from mundane and monotonous life.

I don't know, I hate talking about myself, hah. But my novel idea is one that I've had since I was eleven years old, and I figured since God let an idea hang around in the back of my mind for so long it must be worth writing down.

I hope to meet a lot of writers on this website and gain encouragement. So yeah. Nice to meet you all. :)

I'm Nivee and this is my first year at NaNoWriMo as well.

I'm a regular blogger and am a voracious reader. I like cats, and good music, I'm a big science fiction lover and internet humour aficionado. I like reading and writing fiction because I believe that sometimes everybody needs to escape daily life and engage themself in something, if not real, then out of this world or greater than themselves. I've been writing since I was 11, and only got quite a few of my essays published but never my fiction work. I'd like to once put on the web because the internet's a giant place, I'd get a lot of feedback.

I don't know about winning, but I think NaNoWriMo can help me a lot and I feel very inspired. I'm still a bit slow, but I'm sure this will be worth an experience.

Hi, I'm Tim and this is my first year at all this stuff. Been 'writing' (or rather having what I think is a great idea and then getting bored with it after about 2 weeks and giving up) since I was at school and uni. Never managed to get anywhere! But when I saw this advertised I thought that maybe this time I could manage it. Started early with the planning and have got the ending sussed! Just got to work out one major plot point and I'm there. I've written about half of the first chapter now and its fun. The thing is, for ages I couldn't decide what to write about. Then I remembered that old chestnut about writing what you know so I thought about all the stuff I love and I've pretty much lumped it together in this story.
I love the idea that I'm involved with something that so many others are doing all over the planet and its just great to do something purely for the pleasure of it. I read the other day that we now live in a society where our hobbies or interests are deemed unworthy unless they bring us monetary gain. For people like that I feel such pity. They have no idea about how to feel simple joy at creating something, with no boundaries, no rules about the marketplace or whatever. OK, so who wouldn't like to be published but I'm doing this cuz if I don't Id just be another one of those boring people who moan on about how they coulda been a contender but they never had the time. I WILL DO IT!

IYIYTH

Hello! My name is IYIYTH. I registered here about half an hour ago...so I guess I'm one of the newest members here. If you've ever been on the young writer's site then you might know me. I must have thought that was the adult's forum, which I now find quite odd since there's a huge logo in the top left corner that says "Young Writer's Program."

About me online: I'm a very active forum user, but I have never seen this many registered users online before. Of course, since I am familiar with forums I am familiar with BBCode and similar texts, so if anyone needs help with anything technical then I can hopefully be of some assistance.

About me in RL: I'm a 14 year old high school student. One thing I clearly remember about my years in school thus far is the transitions form one school to the next. In elementary school our teachers were remind us literally every day that middle school was coming up and we should be ready for the "dreaded middle school transition." It must have scared some people but the only difference I noticed from elementary to middle school is the addition of lockers and new people. In turn, the middle schools emphasized our preparation into high school and I remember them babbling nonstop about the "dreaded high school transition." I must be immune to these transitions because I noticed practically no change other than more faces. Makes me wonder how the "dreaded college transition" will go.

To conclude, I'm very excited about being here and writing a novel in 30 days and meeting new people. Unfortunately I will not have the time to write a full 50k word novel so this year I think I'll stick with a short story somewhere in the neighborhood of ~3k words. Sounds crummy, but I suppose that's a good goal for someone with a very limited amount of free time.

Good luck this year!

But I must admit, I am having second thoughts because, although I am already over 4,000 words into it on day two, it is total crap and this particular plot line is super important to me. I'm Shannon, and I'm a newb. My goal is actually to write 1,000 words a day, but more importantly to write every day - I'm more interested in developing the writing habit than in a final word count.

That said, I was thrilled yesterday when 1200 words flew out of my fingers. And then I went to sleep thinking it was 1200 words of telling, and I don't know how to show ... and ... well ... today I have scratched out 500 very doubt-filled words.

So apparently I will be honing my skill, not just vomiting up words on a page. And that's a good thing as well.

I'm looking forward to the community on here - giving and getting support. Cheers, y'all.

I'm Janette, and I just found out about this website/challenge last night from a friend who's daughter joined it.

I've been writing novels since I was in my mid-teens, but I never did anything with them - nor did I quite finish any of them. I've always loved writing, and it seems to come so naturally to me. I type about as fast as I can think, so that aids me in letting the stories just roll out and onto paper (or screen, nowadays!). My goal is to establish myself as a successful, published novelist. I currently have my first real novel on the go, the one that is hopefully going to get me to my goal. I'm a stay-at-home-mom of three young children, so it is rather difficult to find the time to write as much as I'd like to, but I'm determined to make this work! I am a new member of the Yahoo! Contributor Network, so I've been writing articles and short stories on there for the last month to help get my creativity flowing and get some experience "publishing" and having others read my work (a big step for me!).

My personal goal is 80,000-90,000 words, but I'm not sure if my story will take me that far or not. I think a goal of 50,000 words on here is a good place to start! I'm about 1/3 of the way to 80K-90K already. If I can pace myself to write about 1500 a day, I should have my novel finished by the end of the month - and I'll have surpassed the 50K word count goal! I'm excited to get this finished and see where it can lead!

I'm still not sure how this all works... I thought that I would be writing the novel ON this website (and was apprehensive about having others access and read my novel!) but now I think this site is just about encouraging and helping writers get to their goal, is that right? I still have a bit to learn about how this site works!

I'm Diana and I'm taking the challenge for the first time. I read about it on FlyLady (go figure!) and checked it out. What a way to get motivated!

I've written a fair amount, had my publishing endeavors grind to a halt due to some issues with a dishonest agent, and then stopped composing for several years due to job pressures, moves, other things. (I worked on projects that were more or less complete, but the fire was gone and the well had dried up, so to speak).

Currently I have my books parked on Kindle and Nook.

However - suddenly the floodgates opened when I looked over a truly ancient manuscript of mine that had been discarded years ago. I thought "I can do better than THAT!" and rewrite a scene. It was a one time thing; the story had changed hugely from its initial concept, but suddenly I was creating again.

I have several projects in varying stages, including a sequel to one of my books. They are on hold for this month.

My NaNo project is a story that follows one of mine, taking up the thread eighteen years later. It has characters from the first one, but is not dependent on the first book for its plot. It is based on some musings I did twenty years ago. The idea sparked, and I thought "This will be my NaNo project!" So I've been doing a lot of thinking and some character notes and timeline thoughts. I started composing in longhand thanks to the Great Northeastern Power Outage (power cam back Saturday night) and after I post this I'll be setting my timer for 45 minutes and writing up a storm.

I'm delighted that NaNoWriMo exists - what a fun incentive to get cracking!

Thanks!

Diana Wilder

Hi, I'm Marlise, and this is my first time taking up the NaNoWriMo challenge.

I love being creative. It's when I feel most alive.

I'm participating in this challenge this year in the hopes that it will end the endless nagging by family and friends to write. At the end of this, I hope to have something completed that I can show them :)

Today, the writing is going a little slow, so I'm introducing myself in a vain attempt to kill time :S (I'm sure no-one else has employed such drastic coping mechanisms).

Good luck to all you fellow WriMo's out there. May the Muses be gracious in their musings and your fingers energetic in their typing :)

Hello...I'm Lady Aleena here and most other places I frequent. I am so very new to Nano, so please bear with me as I get settled. The novel I am attempting to write is science fiction in today's world. I'm not sure if I will get to 50,000 words due to a late start, but I'll try. I've already posted a few places here hopefully helping others out with their stories. So, even if I don't finish my novel, maybe my ideas have helped others finish theirs.

Have a nice day!

I was born and raised in Michigan, but now live in Virginia. I'm an avid animal lover (have even raised and released 3 raccoons!) and gardener (violets and cactus), have 3 grown children and 1 grandchild.

Was very excited at first, but now quite anxious, thank goodness for Scrivener for Windows or I would've given up already.

I want to wish everyone the best of luck.

Hi, I'm Karen, and this is my first time doing NaNoWriMo. I've wanted to do it for several years but always had pesky homework which managed to get in the way. This being my first year in sixteen without schoolwork and just a job, I thought I'd give it a shot.

I like to write, and I've written a variety of short stories (sadly most of which are fanfictions, mostly about LOST), blogs, and poems, in addition to serious writing for school. There's nothing like a great research paper to lift your spirits. This is my first attempt at a full novel, especially in so short a time period. And it may be my last for a while, since I'm planning on getting married around this time next year, so I plan to make it count!

. . .All the way up to 50,000. :)

Hi there!

My name is Whitney, and I am a first time writer.

I mostly wrote in high school as a hobby, so this is the first time I have considered writing as a professional thing. But I have some decent ideas to work with to try to write a novel.

I am worried that I am not doing any of this type of stuff right...I mean, I have no idea how to write a novel, so I am guessing by listening to a ton of foreign music (such as Hatsune Miku) and just writing at the speed.

My novel is about a couple who get into a car accident and are picked up by a mystery person. (I know it's a lame plot from how much I have told you, but at the same time, I won't tell you the details,)

I am having a difficult time trying to keep the plot going...but I am going to be persistent.

I like to draw, listen to music, dance, model, and sing. :) I am a pretty simple individual.

I hope to become friends with EVERYBODY!!!! :D

I have been doing some writing just for fun and after telling my friend about a story project I have been working on, they recommended I join. I did so and am now working on an idea that I have had been mulling around for a while. Well I can't wait to see what I can do in only a month.

My name is Leah and this is also my first year doing this.

I didn't even know this existed until I saw it on FB - AuthorHouse had posted about it and I just had to look this up. I am not a new writer, despite my young age of 20. Only this summer (still 19 at the time) I published my debut novel which was 84,000+ words and it was written in only 35 days. So I'm going to try and do this again, because I know I can do this and that rush was one of the best experiences of my life!

The only idea I've had that wasn't partially written on prior to Nov. 1 was "Turquoise Summer" which is actually based off of a threat I made to my brother should he ever have a daughter. I told him I would take her during her 17th summer and plot and plan for her to have one of those great summer loves that we all dream about. So this is that threat emerging on paper. And I don't think my brother likes it too much. LOL.

Hey,
I'm Hazel and I've only just heard about NanoWriMo. I decided to give it a go as a way to improve my writing really (also, anything to do with writing I tend to jump into it head first!)

I've been working on a novel for almost four years with a close friend of mine. We've been planning it, changing it and perfecting it all this time and we now feel ready to start actually writing it.
Being a full time mother however, makes getting anything done a lot harder.

I admit, I've joined this site a little late in the month, but I'm dedicated enough to try anyway!

(I accidentally posted this somewhere else and was promptly told to post this here. Sorry for the confusion.)

I'm so brand-spakin' new to NaNoWriMo it's not funny, lol! (I said it's NOT funny. :-) )

Anyway, how does one become a NaNoWriMo winner? Not that I'm going to win anything, but out of curiosity... it would be nice to know.

Sorry about having no profile pic. My pics are too big.

The reason I'm doing NaNoWriMo: My creative writing professor read a short story I gave him, saying it was one of the best short stories he's read in 30 years. (cough... cough... choke and blush) Alrighty then. But it gets worse (better?). He then wrote on my paper that it was also "one of the best stories he's read in the past 30 years. Period." Reading that put tears in my eyes. Of course, he probably was having a bad day when he stumbled across my short story, and it probably made him feel better.

Anyway, he had an agenda with steps. He told me to completely skip step two and get going on beginning a novel. I said, "NaNoWriMo" is starting in Novemember. Why not do that?" He agreed.

Here I am. Brank spakin' new and expecting nothing other than hitting 60,000 words or more by the end of the month. And having a blast writing a story so weird that only someone like me could "get it." I sincerely hope that short story I wrote really is as good as he said, and I also hope that what I'm writing now is just as good (if not better). But realistically speaking... yeah.

BTW: I read how this site was created by a non-profit org. Thanks for doing this! I'm really getting into NaNoWriMo (can I just say "NanoWrite" instead?).

Thanks again for doing this.

But seriously... what is a NaNoWriMo Winner? What would I have to do in order to get my story published through Create-a-Space? I'm clueless. Absolutely clueless.

Thanks again!

I'm Sheri and I have loved writing since I was 16. My thing is, I enjoy writing Self-Help issues. I have already written a Self-Help book for women who have survived abuse of any sort who are Christians but it is not published. I have over 800 poems and enjoy writing more.

I enjoy a WIDE variety of crafts: playing piano, crocheting, scrap-booking, beading, Card Making, painting, sketching, doodling, and much more. I am a journal junkie. I have a journal for every topic you can possibly imagine: Blessings, Humour, Quotes, Daily, Prayer, Affirmation, Ramblings, etc.

So if I am to write, I write TRUE STORIES, perhaps changing names and situations, but I am more into the real, self-help kind of writing. As a Christian, I believe it is part of my calling.

I'm currently 42 and have one cat Sweetie and she gets very jealous when I am on the computer...thank goodness for treats. :)

I don't know that I could do a 50,000 word attempt, but I'd be willing to work up to it.

But for the grace of God go I!

I've got this novel going (and actually only started it about ten days ago 'cause I saw nanowrimo and just had to participate) and I'm not sure about whether it fits in this category (Satire, Humor & Parody), or whether it's more of something like an adventure/fantasy/comedy thing (in a fashion similar to Terry Pratchett's work - albeit definitely not as good).
If you could have a look at my excerpt and point me to the proper direction and/or forum, I'd be obliged, but as I understand it I need writing buddies to do that.

Everyone here is doing it. Whether it's a rough first draft or a fairly clean one, whether it's a jumble of ideas in no particular order, whether your story took a major turn and has even crossed genres--I am so proud of each of you, going for your dreams. I'm Judy, and not only am I taking the challenge for the first time, I never even heard of Nanowrimo until November 13th, when I heard an interview on NPR with a teacher and a sixth grader, both of whom were writing their second novels. Listening to the sixth grader talk about turning off her inner critic, I knew I just had to try it.

I started on 11/14, two days before my 60th birthday, with no plot, no ideas, and no plans -- just the name of my character, "John". Nicely, he introduced himself as a level-headed fourteen year old, about to embark on an adventure that is still unfolding. I still don't know how it's going to resolve, but I'm having a blast.

I have always had a bitter, pre-emptive critic, who stopped me before I could write a word. Not this time -- I packed that voice into a space ship and sent her to Mars! Let her rove with Rover...

With only three days left, I have passed the halfway mark. No way will I finish before the end of the month. However, I'm determined to finish, not just 50,000 words, but the whole story!

.....I feel like a baby, I'm only 13 amongst real teenagers and adults -__-

Anywho, my name is LLW as reference to my username because I don't feel like saying my name lol. I'm (obviously) a newbie, but to NaNoWriMo, not actual writing boards. I have a fan fiction.net, a pulse account and a scholastic story forum account; so the whole posting-stories-online thing is not new to me at all.

Unlike the majority of my peers in the ever-mature world of 8th grade, I love to write. Crazy, unconventional yet congenital stories constantly fill my head and I always end up scribbling the synopsis on paper. The only problem I have is never finishing and/or actually starting most of what comes in my head. The most I can do is a few pages before I give up and go on to the next idea, which is a habit I am going to make myself break :)

I go to a public school, but--not to be cocky--I know I could get into a magnet school(which I did) if I applied. I am currently finishing interviews to be accepted into one or more of the top boarding schools in my area for 9-12th grade, and my whole family hopes i get in.

I love to read and write (obvi, or why would i be here) but I am also addicted to tumblr and Facebook. I'm generally a somewhat-awkward person until you get to know me, and I LOVE hilarious stuff. I'm a sarcastic smarts, I always have a book with me, and I have a slight addiction to Skittles, caramel and Twizzlers; whenever I can get my hands on it.

I'm also very picky about what I read and write, on and offline. If the cover or the first few words/paragraph in a book summary, book cover, actual book or online story do perk my interest I move on. Online stories need to be grammatically correct, have a good plot and a good starting point. More than a few grammar mistakes here and there and I'm out. I don't like overused and recycled plots, hence my hesitance towards the Romance section of this story forum because of how plots are used and reused and rewoven so many goddamn times, and I don't like totally impossible nevagonnahappen plots because, let's face it, it's nevagonnahappen!

I am also very opinionated and can be a bitch when i want to, or be very open and be totally kind and understanding. It depends on who you are, what you mean to me, how I know you, why I know you, and how you've presented yourself towards me. Don't think that just because this is online means I wouldn't say this stuff in person, I'm usually very blunt with people because weaving your way around the truth with silk on a stick will not benefit anybody.

This is an important one to me as it is based on real life events of my ancestors and I don't want to run it into the ground with the wrong approach. I am definitely a newbie to doing NaNoWriMo, although I've known about it for a while. To be honest, I never really had the courage to just... take the plunge. I started writing novels as a kid, but I hardly ever finished them. I'm hoping this might give me the extra push I need to complete a draft. :)

Anyway, this is so thrilling! I can't wait to share this experience with people that love words as much as me!

Hello!! Anna here! This is my first NaNoWriMo and I'm extremely excited! I'm as yet unpublished and hoping to change that in 2012. I am using NaNoWriMo to kick my novel into high gear, kick butt on drafting, and give myself a break from my academic writing which I am sure will give me fits!

I'm owned by three small, cute dogs and work in the mental health field.

My NaNoWriMo is dedicated to writing the female protagonist's side of the story in the collaborative effort that a friend and I are writing. My friend-turned-writing partner will be writing the male protagonist's side of the story. Once the month is out, we look forward to combining our two stories into one hilarious novel that talks about dating going horribly, hilariously wrong and how two people find happiness within themselves. We're not really sure what genre our novel should be in, as it's not really romance per se (even if it is about dating), and it's more comedy than mainstream fiction. I guess we'll categorize it as time goes on.

Katie- I feel your pain about using a pen name. My real name simply isn't "charismatic" enough for my tastes, so I use my middle name and an ancestral name.

Hey all, Nicky here from Indonesia. Heard of this for a while, but only decided to join now... I couldn't have picked a worse time. November is a notoriously busy month in my college, hopefully I can make it, I'll pull all-nighters if I have to!

I'm doing Animation in NAFA, Singapore, still first year. Always wanted to make something huge (say, 50,000 words? :P), cause I've always only written short stuff for myself. This time I have a chance to do something big AND show it off :3

I have an idea, quite heavy since it involves quantum mechanics, but I've got all my scientific facts straight (thank you Reference Desk). Inspired by the Schrödinger's Cat thought experiment, my story tells of Mittens, a cat who thinks science is pointless, who escapes from his box. He unknowingly stumbles upon a parallel universe (several, actually), meeting several different versions of himself. One in particular goes by the dastardly name of... Ian Tomme, who believes science is everything and attempts to thwart Mittens' escape attempt.

Hope we can survive without sleep for a month :D

Other than the generic "Hi, I'm Gemma/Kera. I'm 22 years of age, from Huddersfield in the UK, and I am a budding author." I have no idea what to say.

I have known about NaNoWroMo for a good few years, and have always said that I would join, but by the time November came around, I ended up forgetting or really busy.

I'll start off by actually telling what I write. That's always the best place to start. I write literally anything at the moment. I have dabbled in fanfiction, poetry, thought provoking drabbles, silly flashfics, writing from word prompts and a 34k word novel that is on the back burner right now. Not bad for 10-12 years of "part time" writing between schools, choirs, friends and family. Or more recently my parter and my two young kids.

In my little archive of characters, I have around 40 well thought out, different characters, ranging from adults in their 30's/40's all the way down to teenagers, a few shape-shifters thrown in there for a shake up, but mainly all human. I have 8 characters that have stuck with me since I started out writing, so they have grown with me. I have never been capable of making Mary-Sues/Marty-Stus, all of my characters have always had flaws, be they physical or mental, or even in their personality.

I have also never been one for the cleches you can find in some fiction, namely the stick thin, big chest, blonde with blue eyes, multi-talented in many instruments girls, or the jocks. I like (or prefer) the more natural "average Joe" type of person, or even "bigger bodied" people. They can be fun to write too.

My writing playlist is whatever is my favourite music is at the time. I have a rather dynamic music taste, but seem to listen to the same 27 tracks over and over.

I have once made someone so scared with a piece of writing that I still feel guilty even now. I have also brought a few to tears, sometimes from sadness, but mostly from laughter.

Genres that I write? I can vary from Young Adult fiction, to Erotica. But don't really write Adventure, Horror, Sci-fi or Fantasy

I am not keen on all the vampire fiction that is around at the moment, and try steer away from it. (Stephanie Mayer, I'm looking at you for that dislike)

I have also been asked about how I came up with Kerantli as a screen name, and it's simple. I was called a Dreamer, and looking through random sites, I came across a couple of words that really stuck with me, Minea Kerantli. Loosely translated, it ended up being Mini Dreamer. Now, I was a Mini Dreamer when younger, now I'm a 5ft 7 whirlwind of a woman, I'm not really Mini any more but it stuck.

But that honestly is enough about me, I do prefer to be called Kera, it is ten times easier to type out than Kerantli, I should know, I spell it every day. But yes, enough rambling, back to planning out the mammoth task I seem to have thrown myself into.

I'm Morv, 27 years old from Glasgow Scotland. Pretty much my first NaNoWri and am looking forward to it, a lot of my internet friends have done this over the years and so I am finally taking the plunge myself.

Hello.

I'm a college student in CA, USA. My major is Creative Writing with a minor in Japanese and Graphic Design. I enjoy cats, writing, baking, soccer, and napping in the sun. I am an introvert and spend my free time roleplaying and watching tv. I have two older brothers, one of which is in the Navy. I'm probably the most creative one in my family. As far as NaNoWriMo goes, I'm a bit iffy on the concept but am interesting in trying it out finally after thinking about it for years. I do have two or three novel ideas I have been meaning to flesh out. This could be my push to figure them out. If I don't do one of them, I might contemplate writing a fanfic of sorts. I don't know yet.

At any rate, I hope to make some friends here and have some fun. Maybe go a lil insane while I'm at it!

Hello everyone.

This obviously my first time at NaNo or I wouldn't be here saying hi..

I am a British Citizen living in Turkey, a freelancer and writer of short and flash fiction.

The novel in my head has been eating away at me for some time so decided that in order to keep motivated this would be a good way to get it down.

Please feel free to add me as a buddy.. we can all beat each other with big sticks then when the going gets tough..x

Heya! :D

Another newbie. ^_^ I'm Luke, and I'm based in Glasgow. I've got two novels planned although I don't think I'll finish planning this second one since I want a lot of background world-building, so I'll probably just end up writing the first one and leaving the other one til next year. :)

I'd heard about NaNo for years but it's always interfered with studies. This is my first year at uni though and my first exams are before November, and my second ones aren't til Christmas time. ... NaNo is such a good excuse to skive. :'D WRITING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN STUDYING.

Really excited, I've never written anything of this length before - I've been too much of a plan-phobe to try it, so I've had to resort to pantsing, which isn't in my nature really. xD But now I have two wonderful plans! NaNo is such a good agent for getting shit done. :')

Hi everyone, Tracey here from Palmerston North, NZ. It’s nice to read about fellow newbies! I’m sure I must've heard of NaNo on the periphery before now…but this is the first year I actually sat-up, took notice and (GULP) signed up.

I love to read urban fantasy and so that’s what I plan to write. I have a few story ideas floating around and have been working on a novel on and off (mainly off) for the last two years. I’m dropping that one for NaNo and going with something completely new. Exciting! Right now I’m in the advanced brainstorming stage and the outline is but a twinkle in my eye.

Good luck everyone!

Hi everyone!

I'm Alastor, in real life Liza and I'm from The Netherlands.
Living in Shanghai, China at the moment where I teach Art at a Chinese International school (great fun!).
I have to admit that I have no idea why I joined NaNo, impuls I guess. But once commited....!
And of course I don't have a very clear picture of what I'm going to write. Maybe some sort of fictional memoir, extremely loosly based on my life... What gerne would that be?
Anyway, I started doing some research on how the hell to write a novel and I've started creating my character. I want to get as much pre-work done before November!
