A revision tool just dropped into my lap... er...laptop

I usually let software on my computer go ahead and update itself.

I have Windows 7 and every now and then your system is saying: Updates, please don't shut off your computer...

And there are other updates that happen automatically, Firefox, and stuff. You click on your Firefox icon to start it and you are told that a new version is being installed, just be a minute...

There are some I am asked to update and sometimes I put it off for a few weeks, if I'm busy.

A few days ago I was told I had an update ready to install for Adobe Reader (Adobe Reader X). This notice came up when I had exported my 2011 Nano Novel to PDF to read it to finally start revising it. Well, as an excuse to procrastinate, I told it to go ahead and install...

And found out that I could now put in notes and put sticky notes on the pages of the document. And save the notes.

I hadn't been planning to print out my manuscript because of the expense of printing, but now I had a way to read a fixed document and mark it up for notes. Just as if I was doing it to printed out pages of my manuscript. And this was a free update.

I got excited and by the end of a few hours had made some notes on the pdf document and then opened up the OpenOffice document and started making the changes based on my notes. It felt almost like I was working from printed out pages.

So when you're installing these updates, check and see what features are added, they just might help you with some aspect of your writing.

For those of you who like to avoid the temptation to change the document as you're making notes, this might you you.

Happy Revising!

I'll be honest, I use the Adobe commenting tools a lot at work; about as often as I use the ones in Word. There are some documents I work with that I use Word format, and others that are pdfs, depending on what my role in the workflow is (i.e., if I'm verifying the technical aspects, it'll be in Word, but if I'm doing an editorial review, it'll be a pdf.)

Another nifty feature with the Adobe comment tool is that you can summarize the comments, so you can get a quick overview by page of where you made markups--including deletions, additions, highlights, etc. Granted, I'm using Adobe Acrobat Professional at work, so it might have more features, but Reader may allow you to summarize comments too.

Scrivener also has commenting in it. Despite that, I still like writing on the document and would like a digital version of that.

Macs have their own built-in PDF reader, Preview. The latest version allows you to make notes, either in a separate column that will list them, or on the text. You can also underline, highlight, strikethrough, and circle text. It's really handy when someone sends me chapters to beta.
