--You actually enjoy English class.

--Your flash drive is your "precious."

--Your best friends are the characters in your novel.

--You spend all of your classes writing your novel.

--Your friends are constantly telling you that you need to focus in class.

--You have hundreds of papers flying around your room with ideas for characters and even more empty notebooks.

--You wake up in the middle of the night with the perfect story idea and write it down on a notebook by your bed or enter it into your phone.

--You've sent a 2am text to your best friend about how you found the bloody knife and that so and so was next.

--You get a phone call the next morning about the text. Your friend isn't mad she just wishes you would stop sending her texts of your novel at 2am (M I love you! You are stil my lifesaver)

--If the FBI ever took your computer you would be in BIG TROUBLE

--You watch Deadliest Warrior for accurate fights and weapons you've never heard/seen.

--Your mother flipped on you when she found that you had a baby name book and had to spend two hours explaining that you where not pregnant at all.

--Your daily life becomes parts of your book as you know no one would believe that this stuff actually happens to you.

I'll add more as I think of them.

-You often reference your characters when something happens, then realize no one in the room has read your novel and they're all staring at you weirdly.
-You spend a week with your best friend trying to reach 100 pages of script in seven day (like Script Frenzy, only cooler, shorter, and with just the two of us competing)
-You're in love with your own characters
-You spend your time thinking about your hypothetical fandom (if you published your novel, it became a bestseller, and you had a giant fandom) and which ships would be most popular

I do all of the above :D

~ You have ever Googled the names of multiple serial killers in a row to read up on their methods
~ You narrate your whole life in your head as you live it from a third person POV
~ You narrate other people's lives in your head through their first-person POV
~ Buying nachos brightens your whole day because then you can make a snack in thirty seconds (meaning your thought process doesn't get too badly interrupted)
~ You have ever spent more than an hour trying to cut a Facebook status down to fit in the 430-character limit without ruining what you're trying to say (although I hear they've done away with the limit, so I suppose that's no longer an issue)
~ People see the library books stacked around your house and assume you're a tap-dancing cop who moonlights as a surgeon who is planning on going to law school and has a secret dream to be a rapping radio DJ while cross-stitching photographs and is also coincidentally enough revising a novel. And sometimes they buy you Christmas gifts accordingly.

That's it for now, but I might add more...

- you always have a clipboard, pen and spare paper handy for writing almost 24/7.
- you have lots of books on different aspects of writing.
- you buy local history books in areas you visit so you have deep background for possible stories.
- you take pictures of mundane things like street scenes, signs and the like for possible stories.
- you have written a million or more words of fiction.
- you prefer to write stories as opposed to watching movies.
- you have multiple copies of "The Writer's Digest Character Naming Sourcebook" around the house because you REALLY need to have it at your fingertips. (They wander because other family members also use the book.)
- you wake up an hour early so you can spend time writing before going to work.
- you write while on the bus, going to work.
- you write for most of your lunch hour, instead of eating. (And you have snacks during the day to make up for a light lunch, though that is more of a weight control thing.)
- you buy books with an eye to using them as source material, especially for topics you like for other reasons.
- your writing resource library takes up several shelves on a three foot wide book case.
- you do NaNoWriMo, Camp NaNoWriMo and practices NaNoWriMos.
- you attend as many writing oriented sessions at a science fiction and fantasy convention as possible and wish you were triplets or quadruplets so you could attend more.
- you read books like Steven King's "On Writing" and Julia Cameron's "The Right to Write" multiple times, taking notes.

you have too many notebooks... some partly filled some not (also guilty)
you'd rather be writing the having to work (i'm guilty of that)
you keep a few notebooks with you at all times.. (i have two in my bag that i take to work) just in case i get that urge to write during break or after shift is over i'll go someplace quite to write)
you would be happy if you would be getting paid to write instead of do your job (seriously i'd rather take my lap top to work and write instead of do my job. i work as a dietary aide at one of our local nursing homes)

Lol. Wow i started launghing while reading these and my family is staring at me and don't understand why. I do most of these. I relised I was a writer when...

1. I spend two hour describing my mc house in detail just so I dont put something in the wrong place next month
2. You start ask people what they think of name combinations "what do you think of troy lynn?" "what's a good middle name for Connor?"
3. You name characters after your friends and then are terrified to kill them.
And finally
4. When you re-read last years novel and began crying cause it was so sad.

-- You find yourself grinning like a maniac over a murder or torture scene simply because having worked it out makes you so happy, then someone asks what you're grinning about and you don't know what to say.

-- You go through the self-checkout at the library just so you don't scare the librarian with your research choices.

-- You become unnaturally excited about finding books on, say, the home life of the 18th century commoner or cleaning techniques in the 16th century or phrases commonly used in the time of Shakespeare. You know, really REALLY boring topics to anyone BUT a writer.

-- Getting a book on out-of-use words and phrases is the best Christmas gift EVER, even better than that iPod you've been dying to get.

-- And the book consequently sees more use than the iPod (which is a near miraculous feat).

-- You have entire conversations with your characters in your head.

--Sometimes the conversations don't stay in your head.

-- You not only have a name for your muse, but what they look like, their full personality, and complain loudly about their worst quirks.

--That is, when you aren't complaining about your characters.

-- You ever find yourself staring into a shop window thinking "__Character name__ would love this!"

-- You ever find yourself buying said item because it makes you feel "inspired."

-- It takes you an hour in the office section to choose JUST the right pen.

-- Buying a notebook takes an equal amount of time.

-- The office section is your favorite part of any store, and places like Staples are to you what Toys R Us once was.

-- You're never bored at work because every time it's slow you think about your story.

-- You ever find yourself rushing a transaction, putting a customer on hold, or listening with half an ear while busily writing/typing (I was taking notes, honest!) because you suddenly had the BEST idea.

--You snickered knowingly at any of the above.

I was once telling my one of my friends about a character in one of my stories. Her name was Saleah, and she was really quiet (she started out as the daughter of the main antagonist and slowly moved to be one of the main six protagonists). I literally told my friend, "I don't really know to much about Saleah. She's really quiet, and she hasn't really told me much about herself. I really hope that I can get to know her better." My friend looked at me like I was insane. XD

You've bought MULTIPLE baby name books, including ones with culture specific names only, and you have baby naming sites bookmarked.

Your saved wiki pages for research range from Alice in Wonderland syndrome to Belle Gunness, none of them seem to have anything in common, and none of them are applicable to what you're currently working on.

You've stayed up until four in the morning because you had to get a "short" scene written down "really quick, I promise."

You've called a character nasty names because they refuse to do what you tell them to.

You've appeared to have lost your entire body of work due to an untimely computer death, and lost the will to go on.

-Your old friends don't even think to mention that you write because they think of it about the same for you as breathing, whereas your new friends find out you write and they're all "Why didn't anyone tell me?!".

-Your high school band director initially hated you for always having a notebook in class, then realized it was by and far the most effective way to get you to shut-up.

-At your 2000 member high school, six weeks in, you were known as the "writer girl".

-Your mom thinks you have a weird obsession with housing plans, before she hears you talking excitedly about picking a house for your characters to live in, and goes "Oh. Wow. I definitely was not smart enough to put that together."

-You drive a lot, so you practice cohesive story telling into a tape recorder so the danger of driving and writing is slightly eliminated (although you definitely have written while driving).

-You drive 150 miles each way in the snow twice a week to attend write-ins during November.

You are thrilled to receive grammar books for Christmas.

You plan on going out with friends, but at the last minute a story idea strikes and you fake sick so you can stay home and work on it.

One of your characters will make a snarky remark to something a friend said, or something on TV and you giggle like a maniac. Everyone around you wonders what's so funny. You blush and bite your lip to stop laughing.

Every single person you meet could be inspiration for a character.

When people tell you a good story about something that happened to them, you ask them if you can use it.

-When you're a girl and you dream from your MMC's point of view (custom Italian suit, gold cufflinks, and all) in the middle of a scene with another character. Best dream ever. Fabulous feeling!

-When you buy a textbook about Genetics: Ethics and the Law for character background.

-Your psychologist knows your characters inside and out, and sometimes helps you get unstuck.

-Everywhere you go you see and hear things and think, "hey, I could use that ..."

--When you find a really good fountain pen at a yard sale and are so happy.

--When all the above is true but you still own at least one pen/pencil that retails for more than $50.

Further all the above is true but you do most of your writing on a computer because of spell check.

And for my dyslexic writing soul mates, you write even when you can't spell to save yourself (or your characters) and thank the cyber gurus everyday for spell check.

When you spend more time writing than you do sleeping.
When you wake up in a cold sweat in the middle of the night and scramble around in the dark for a notebook to jot down some abstract idea that you're terrified of losing.
When you get slightly sexually aroused by vintage typewriters
When you can't understand why the rest of the world doesn't have quite a descriptive inner monologue
When you write 2000 words in an hour and don't remember any of it
When you've spent all your money on books that you think will give you insight into how the greats have done it
When you read a book that you dislike and think to yourself "I could have written this a lot better."
When grammatical errors cause the hair on the back of your neck to stand up.
When you actively seek out new words and spend time learning how to use them correctly.
When you cringe after reading a poorly written email, report, online review, or blog post.
When txtspk makes you want to punch a baby.

Here's one that I don't think has been mentioned

--When you watch tv, see a movie, play a videogame, etc. and think of all the character development in the story, think about how weak or great the plot is, think about all of the literary devices and tropes used in the story, and wonder how the writer got inspiration for it, instead of just sitting and enjoying mindlessly like a non-writer.

-You talk a lot in third person.

-You talk to your characters and they talk back.
-People call you crazy and you ask them why they didn't figure it out sooner.

I've actually mentioned my character by name to my boyfriend yesterday without realising. I was just chatting about it briefly and I called my character by name. I didnt think it would happen.

You know you're a writer when you care so much about your character you don't want to kill them off when you need to, important for the plot. theres no loop hole or alternative :(
http://www.nanowrimo.org/en/forums/plot-doctoring/threads/41953

and when you really like all you characters and statr to think about other stories you can put them in because you dont want to say goodbye

When you hear someone say that they 'don't like writing' you make a mental note to make a character with that name and then kill them off immediately. :3
Okay, I've only done this once, I admit it. xD

You narrate your life (and possibly someone else's), which drives people insane.

You literally drop your jaw when a nonwriter says something only writers would know.

You mutter out loud so much at your computer that some people ask if you take meds. xD And Brownie Points if it's your parents/siblings.

When your old next door neighbor used to be in the special forces and would tell his son, "If I had a toothpick, I could take you out." He learned that in the special forces (and not to do it), and you learned it much more simply, cheaper, and painlessly through Google. (Actually he was a little bit creepy...He was in Vietnam and didn't come all the way back and he died when I was about six or so, and to a six year old he was especially creepy.)

A big stack of books about topics like poisons and the most random parts of history ever come into the library and the librarians know exactly who requested them.

A new librarian asks an older one who keeps requesting the weird books and the librarian says, "Oh, it's just probably either Geeky or her big sister."

A 1940's Remmington typewriter is the coolest present you've ever gotten.

When your friend named the typewriter.

Your parents get you a big box of tractor-feed paper to make it easier to type on the typewriter (it's a pain to thread in new pages).

You stock up on writing supplies when school is about to start and Wal-Mart has 10 cent sales on all the notebooks and pens and pencils.

You find a baby naming book from Goodwill and buy it, but you make your Mom do the transaction and then you give her the money later because you're in your early teens and that's just awkward.

I own three baby name books and a "where names come from" book. I also have roughly 5 notebooks full of lists compiled from all four: Greek, Spanish, Danish, and Latin origins, names that have to do with fire, water, air, light, dark, happy, sad, dangerous, and funny, names that mean specific things, and names that rhyme with... It's a habit. A terrible, wonderful, habit.

I bought my first baby name book when I was 13 and received a "talk" from a concerned woman in the grocery line, as well as numerous odd looks from people.... aw well :)

Ive woken up with ideas and had to write them down, many a night

I have sent those 2am txts to friends. My cousin, if he replies, its a "you know its 2am right?" and my bf replies with a "lol, that's good. now what about...." He's a better sport about those txts than my cousin.

I have a baby name book that I love. Its been a great help. I laughed about the Mom part too. However, it was my mom who bought me the book(she's so awesome, she agreed itd be a help for the stories), and my dad who gave me the look.

Many, many true life events have ended up in my stories.

Ha, ha. My mom writes, too, and she gave me a name book that we had from before my then two-year-old sister was born. My brother, Thomas, didn't know that, so he caught me reading it and said to me, "I'm only nine! I'm too young to have a neice or nephew! But, if you are going to have a baby, name it Thomas or Thomasina!"

I am so in love with my MMC... I am currently taking some time to figure out what I *don't* like him so I can write scenes pertaining to that. Because "but I'm writing him through FMC's perspective!!!" isn't going to cut it for very long.
Oh and the ships. Sometimes I imagine scenes from bad fanfiction about these two.

Actually, since I don't have too terribly many charries in my book, I decided to pick out extremely meaningful names for each of them, main and minor alike. So now I have Carmen, Franklin, Ryan, Beatrice, Ailish, Thomas, Anne, Carl, Sonj, Noah, Brian, Nova, and Samantha.

[/quote]

Oh my god this is me, too.
I also have a book where I write down all my ideas and planning, and it is ALWAYS one of the first things I grab in a fire drill.
That and my pencil case (which is where I keep my flashdrive) ;D

You know you're a writer when you're searching through polyvore for an outfit for a character you're hoping will give you inspiration for a scene, and another character (with completely different style) pops in and complains about how you always neglect them and never make them pretty outfits on polyvore - and then you end up spending an hour appeasing them before you can get back to what you meant to be doing.

I think she was making a point: errors in commas and/or spelling are just as annoying as a misplaced apostrophe.
If so, it's a point I support wholeheartedly.

Something else that I'd add to the "sends you into a rage" list: seeing people either never capitalize anything or TYPE IN ALL CAPS.

When you can't understand why the rest of the world doesn't have quite a descriptive inner monologue
When you write 2000 words in an hour and don't remember any of it

THESE. Oh my GOSH YES.

That's been driving me crazy! And since I'm interested in writing screenplays, too, and I'm a perfectionist who doesn't want anyone else touching my work, I watch for things like lighting and set dressing and costumes.

"The lighting is actually quite good in this scene...wait, that may be partly CGI...still, the lighting's good."
"Oh, that bustle is excellent."

I'm sure it's driving my bf nuts, too. That- and my habit of sometimes calling the climax of the movie within the first ten minutes. It's not my fault it was a clearly-defined trope and that character was the only possible killer amongst those characters!

Three words: Mops and siblings.

Those two things have built many a sword fight scene for me.

Haha oh good some one else who does the same as me.

For my boyfriend's sake, I don't usually voice my opinions when we watch something but I'm sure it would drive him crazy. I do remember trope-calling in my head when watching Thor and admiring the scenery in more of a "That's neat" kind of way but more like a, "I would like to use something like that in my story but how would I go about describing that in text."

I have the opposite problem. I have way too much fun killing off characters.
There is a reason only writers can legally get away with murder. :3.
