Languages :-)

Hello everybody.

I love languages. Is anyone else with me? I'm sure NaNoWriMo has billions of languages, so here's a fun thing to do while procrastinating like me:

1. Post your native language/s
2. Post any other languages you know fluently
3. Post any other languages you are learning, your level at them, and if you want, why are you learning them?

Me:
1. English
2. none yet, but I'm close
3. Dutch, advanced, German, intermediate, French, intermediate, Icelandic, beginner, Swahili, beginner, Braille, beginner, Sign Language, intermediate

:-) So, what languages can you speak? And is anyone willing to do a Nanomail language exchange to practice? (hint hint, I need help with Icelandic)

I love languages too! English is my native language and I don't speak anything else fluently. I used to be pretty good with German, but having no one to speak it with has not been helping my skills there. I've also taken some lessons in Spanish, but I'm really bad with that, so I gave up. I would like to learn Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Icelandic, Faeroese, and maybe Finnish too. I can say a few things in most of those languages but it's just like a few lines from songs and not anything actually useful.

My native language is Finnish. Besides that, I'm fluent in English.

I studied German for five years because I like the language. It was too hard for me, though, and I'm very bad at it. I'm hoping to start studying it again some day.

I have also studied Swedish for six years because Finnish people have to :( I'm very bad at Swedish and sick and tired of learning it. I have nothing against Sweden, though. I just don't like learning a language I have no interest in.

In the future I'd maybe like to learn Japanese but I might be too lazy to actually start studying it.

Native language is English. Not fluent in anything else currently, but I've been able to hold my own in ASL in the past. I don't have anybody to talk to anymore, so I'm sorely out of practice. I studied Spanish off and on in school for several years. I could probably become fluent again within a week or so if you dropped me in the middle of Mexico. Studied French for two years in high school. Tried to teach myself Russian, Japanese, and Maori, but never got very far with any of them. The problem with languages is if you don't use them, you lose them, and I never had anybody to practice with outside of school. I'm fascinated by language though and love learning!

3. French (was at GCSE level, but as I haven't spoken it for years it's probably back in beginner stages again), Japanese (total beginner).

I'd love to learn any language I could get my hands and ears on. There was a Hungarian girl who used to work with me so she'd give me little things like, 'Thanks' and 'Bye'... Dog is kutya, which sounds like Kuja, which made me think of Cujo. I learn like that (randomly).

1. English. I guess you could say Tagalog is also a native language since I grew up understanding it and then in grade 4 I learned how to speak it.

2. Sadly I'm not proficient in any other language at the moment. I learned French in elementary and high school but it's been a long time and it was a little frustrating towards the end when I took it. I also learned how to translate Russian to English for my MA but I'm not speaking or reading proficient; still need the dictionary and a few hours to get through a passage ;)

3. I'm going to be continuing my Italian next week (whoo-hoo!). I started learning it last year when I went to Italy for a semester exchange; I didn't want to lose everything I learned so I was determined to continue. So I'm still at the beginner level but I hope to improve. I'm also hoping to pick up French again in the new year and continue reviewing my Russian during my spare time xD

- I would love to learn Portuguese because it would be a huge advantage for my job (we get a lot of Portuguese-speaking patients that no one can really communicate with).
- French (Canadian French?) would be fun because I travel to Montreal frequently and I always have to be the lame one speaking English. :)

3. Japanese, intermediate. my fiance is half-Japanese, but we never use it conversationally...

Minor little bits of German, Spanish, Portuguese and Scottish Gaelic.

Growing up in the Highlands means that you get to watch a lot of Gaelic-dubbed kids TV when you're a kid, which means that you can't actually speak the language, but when you hear an otherwise familiar cartoon theme tune, you can only think of the Gaelic version....

- French - I'm in my sixth year of school/college study now, and either rapidly approaching or just over the intermediate hurdle
- Japanese - most definitely a beginner. I'm in my first few months of super-serious study, taking the JLPT on my birthday this year (December), grah...
- Korean - studied it for a while last year and the year previous but atm don't really have the time to study it actively, so I keep it all fresh in my head with music, TV shows etc
- Italian - studied this one for a year at AS level (ab initio) and utterly hated it, so dropped it as soon as I possibly could. I can't think of a language I hate more.

On my hit list currently are Finnish and Ancient Egyptian (got a book for that one! *G* ), and in the past I've dabbled with Latin, Ancient Greek, Hungarian, Swedish and Spanish.

1. German

2. English (school said C1 of CEFR three years ago, if that means anything to anyone here; I have no idea if I'm better or worse at it now)

3. Huh, that's a hard one.People say I tend to underestimate myself, so my self-assessment might not be entirely correct here... but let's begin. French - I can make myself clear if I use a lot of words, and I can understand if you talk slowly and clearly; schools says B1 here. Finnish - I know the basics, but since there was only the beginner's class at my community college and no-one is around to practice with (and who would pinch me a little every now and then so I'd go on studying by myself), I'm kinda stuck at the European A1 level. Spanish - I can read very simple texts, like the menu at the restaurant. Same applies for Catalan and Italian. I speak neither, though.

As for which languages I'll learn in the near future... that's what tempted me into not studying for a Master's degree but for another Bachelor's degree, this time in linguistics. The subject of my choice are Scandinavian Studies, which requires me to learn Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish and Estonian. Yay for weird languages (no offence, but for someone who grew up with German and English, the latter two need a bit... getting used to ;) ). And though the university of my choice doesn't offer Icelandic (which is absolutely ridiculous and will hopefully change until next year), I have to take online classes. Well, damn.

So, if anyone wants to chat a little, feel free to NaNo-mail me :)

3- I had a year of Spanish in HS and it's pretty common in my area so I still use it occasionally. I had two semesters of French in college and can have a very, very basic convo. I am currently trying to teach myself Korean and am really surprised at how easy it is to learn. After only a few hours of it I had already grasped most of the alphabet. I have a bunch of worksheets and youtube videos bookmarked of it so I am hoping it stays this easy because I am LOVING it. Such a pretty language.

I have a dream (that started in an actual dream) to learn enough languages/get a team of people who speak enough languages to create a truly global language, since I think part of the reason Esperanto failed is that it drew too much from the European languages and not enough from other languages.

And Arabic---beginner. I'm just starting to learn basic, Modern Standard Arabic, and I've pretty much just learned the alphabet and basic vocabulary this semester. I can't wait to start the second class. :)

When you work around a software project normal conversations are often held within the programming languages - sometimes tongue in cheek and sometimes because the programmer is too tuned in to the language to shift to normal conversational mode.

Despite being 1/2 Italian, I don't speak Italian. Which disappoints pretty much everyone who I tell. So, I plan to learn over the summer.
Other languages I want to learn: Mandarin Chinese, Russian, Swedish, and I'd honestly love to learn German. ^^; I'll need to take these in a class, however, for pronunciation. :D I love languages so much~

Re: Languages :-)

1) English is my native language.

2) I'm fairly fluent in Spanish.

3) I know some French up to GCSE/AS level, basic German (I studied it for 3 years at secondary school), basic Italian, I can say a few words and phrases in Czech and Swedish, I know a few swearwords in Serbian courtesy of reading "The Good Soldier Svejk" and am currently learning Latin (basic), Irish (basic - I can read and write it better than I can speak it) and Old English (which I have literally just started a couple of weeks ago using the Teach Yourself book/CD course). I can read and understand some words and phrases in Portuguese where it is similar enough to Spanish, but I can't string a sentence together. Yet.

In terms of languages I would like to learn, well I have the Teach Yourself Complete Babylonian book waiting for me on my shelf once I have completed the Old English course. I have a keen interest in historical languages as well as modern ones. I would like to learn Ancient Greek at some point as well as its modern counterpart and be able to read ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics. Other languages I would like to try and study include Icelandic, Polish, Portuguese, Japanese, Scottish Gaelic and I want to make a proper attempt at Welsh. I have a book and tape set for that, but haven't got round to it yet apart from making a few basic notes.

To be honest, if it was up to me, I would spend the rest of my life trying to learn as many languages as I could, it fascinates me seeing the similarities, differences and how they have all developed over the centuries.

Re: Languages :-)

My native language is English, but I studied for Japanese for four years at college. I wasn't fluent, but I knew enough that I would sometimes think in Japanese. And, when the Japanese business men visited my summer job (they owned the company), I could pick up on their conversations. I've been out of college for a year now, and it amazes me how much of the language I've lost since I don't study it every day. I can't understand conversation much anymore, but I can still read and write a little of it (with the aid of a dictionary for the words I don't know yet). I feel so guilty for not keeping with my Japanese studies because it just turned into a really expensive hobby. But, I still have all of my resources, and I do pick them up every so often to make sure I don't lose the language completely.

Re: Languages :-)

When I was in college I minored in both French and Japanese, and they were usually back to back. It was really hard switching from one language to another right after, because my brain would still be in that mode. One year I had French right before the Japanese class. And when the Japanese teacher asked me a question, instead of answering, "Hai," I answered, "Oui!" Everyone laughed.

Another year, I had Japanese class right before Conversational French, and that was really hard. I remember one time I wanted to say "roommate" (in French), but all I could think was "rumumeito". Ha.

1. Native: Finnish
2. Very fluent in English (done academic translations and such), moderately fluent in Swedish (the second official language in Finland)
3. Understand German quite well, especially written, thanks to studies in school 20 years ago, can even talk and produce some written text, but not fluently. Also, have studied the elementaries of French and Italian at some point, but wouldn't do too well with them. And I know some words and phrases in Spanish.

Still the two languages I'm comfortable with are Finnish and English.

1. Post your native language/s

English.

2. Post any other languages you know fluently

None.

3. Post any other languages you are learning, your level at them, and if you want, why are you learning them?

Italian... I'm a beginner I suppose. I'm learning Italian because *cringes with embarrassment* I am. Well, my dad is and he never taught me so now I have to learn a language that my own family belong to. It's always embarrassing to tell people I don't speak it, and also, I can't speak to some members of my family. I have another house there too, so I really need to learn. But at the moment, Italian is on hold because...

Spanish... Again, I'm a beginner. I'm learning this because I'm going walking/driving around Spain for six weeks in September and I need to be able to say basic stuff. To be honest, I remember a bit from school and it's not AS painful as I'd feared (I'm terrible with foreign languages) but with the Italian... It gets terribly confusing because certain parts are very similar but not quite the same, so I currently sometimes have a bizarre amalgamation of the two. D'oh!

1. English

2. none

3. - French - A-level. I'm sitting my A2 exams in it in April and June, but to be honest considering I've been learning it for 7 years I feel I should be better at it than I am. I'm not even confident enough to put a little thing in French here...

- German - learnt it for 3 years but stopped 4 years ago. I can just remember odd bits now.

- Sindarin - one of Tolkien's Elven languages. The one they speak in the LotR films, the one based on Welsh. I know the mutations, a fair number of words and can conjugate some forms of verbs but syntax... pffft. Ú-istin. (see, I can write in Sindarin but not in French; what's wrong with me?)

- Welsh - I love it! But know odd words and place names from many many holidays in Gwynedd. I know the mutations though because Tolkien lifted them for Sindarin. haha :P I hope to become fluent one day. If RS Thomas can learn it at 30 I still have a fighting chance.
