Just in time for NaNo, I've somehow managed to find the button that turns off spellcheck in my word processor. (Huzzah!) The problem? I keep misspelling things!
One word that always gets me is definitely; which one seems to have it in for you?
Hah, I was totally thinking definitely too before I opened this thread. I mean, phonetically, it should be definetely, right? :P I'm actually a pretty good speller- I made the top 14 in my entire elementary school during our spelling bee- but it just goes to show that even the best of us make mistakes. I have even bigger problems when I try to spell words out loud though, which unfortunately happens all the time as I have ESL students who I tutor. I constantly mix up "g's" with "j's" when I'm talking- I still remember the word I messed up on in the spelling bee in elementary school. I spelled conjugation congugation. Not because that makes any sense visually, and I caught the mistake milliseconds afterward- I literally said "g-j", but because G and J sound so much alike when you speak them out loud. Actually that happens a lot when I type too. I make spelling and grammatical errors every two seconds when I'm typing, but I immediately go back and correct them milliseconds after I do them. I'm a fast typist, but it made me ridiculous with typing accuracy in typing class. :D
I left out a verb, and I have a degree in linguistics.
"He the door."
That's honestly the worst thing any of my Nano endeavours have ever produced. He what the door? Kicked it? Closed it? Painted it? Ate it? Pulled it off its hinges and used it as a surfboard? WHAT?!
------------------------
Where we're going, we don't need verbs. Apparently.
I type my characters names wrong, and I'm in book three of a trilogy. It's more to do with the fact that I'm a rubbish touch typer than the fact that I can't spell, though! Ciro gets typed as Crio, and Xavi as Xabi (which IS a name, but not HIS name.)
I miss lots of words when I'm furiously trying to write notes before my poli sci professor can change slides but he moves on anyway. One such word is accountability. Independence is another (it comes out like indepedence or indepednence) Luckily for NaNo I don't miss as many words.
Permanently is permanently spelled 'permenantly' in my novel. And I have to keep correcting it. The thing is, I correct it automatically now, because my brain still types it wrong but it KNOWS instantly that it's wrong.
Good luck intterperting that. Most words, I can get close enough for spell-check to recognize.
that one, not even close... I'm a horrid speller, but at least I can tell if I've spelled it wrong... I might not have a clue how to spell it correctly, but I can tell if it's not right, and looking at spell-check's suggestions, I can pick the correct spelling out... if the poor program isn't utterly confused as to what I meant to say....
There have been many many times that I confuse spell check and then I spend ten minute's trying to type it so that poor spell check can even start guessing what I meant to say. I am currently scared to turn spell check back on. I have a large vocabulary but it never get's used because I can't spell any of it.
HA! You gotta be kidding me, i can't spell. Thats it there not going to be a list of words because i just can't spell. :p
Luckily for everything important my spelling doesn't count cause of dislexia but in things like nano it is just annoying.
Red wiggaly lines like to appear on my screen to break up the black and white :p I have a very useful programme which tells me which one the correct spelling is by adding a definition of the words so i don't correct it and then look at it later and think i'm pretty sure thats not the word i meant haha.
Receive. It gets me EVERY. TIME. I've always been really good at spelling, but this word just...ugh. I have to type it practically every day at work, and even after a month of this, I STILL can't get it right.
Also, I'm working on MS Word for the first time in a looong time, since I have a Dell at work and a Mac at home. TextEdit on the Mac automatically corrects spelling, whereas MS Word just underlines everything, and even though I think the layout of Word is much more conducive to writing, this really slows me down because I haaate having misspelled words and keep having to go back and correct them -__-
"Venomous" is the one I can never spell correctly. I don't write it out that much, but when I do I almost always write "venemous" with an 'e' instead. Now I think it's some sort of signature thing I do and I'm starting to use it as a way to identify myself :U
"patient" I NEVER spell it write, MS Word hates me for it. I also made the bad decision of nameing my main character's best friend Ariel (yep like the mirmade(sp?)) but spelled it Areial. and her moms name is Alissa but I normally spell it Alyssa so I'm always messing up.
I'm dyslexic. If I started a list we'd be here ALL DAY.
It tends to be that I do know how to spell the words, I just get it wrong anyway. Consciousness, infinitesimal, harangue, pretty much all the words already listed, poison (which can be posion or poisen) and alcohol - words that often to occur in the same sentence.
Guards is a problem. My first novel was a sword and sorcery fantasy novel, and by the end of the eighth draft I could finally spell it. Sword was another one I had trouble with, actually. That made for some fun spell-checking.
My best ones though, are words which I've read wrong and therefore have no idea how to spell. Words like furtive, espionage, usurp. I'd write things like furvative, episonage and upspur simply because that was how I read the words. Infestimal (infinitesimal) was another, actually, but I still can't spell it.

Look, I'll get it wrong because I can never spell it - I'm so glad I'm not the only one that has trouble spelling this:) defenitely . . . . . yep, got it wrong! I am forever hitting the wrong keys and getting adn instead of and. There was one word that was hilarious, I can't remember what it was, but it ended up with a gh in it and those two letters aren't in that word at all!
Actually. Becomes ACTAULLY every single time. And I have to say de-fin-i-tel-y in my head or I won't be able to spell it. Obviously and mischeivous too. Becomes Oviusly and Mischevious.
Words you just can't spell right!

Re: Words you just can't spell right!
Holy ****! Wow! I ALWAYS spell definitely like this: definiteley. Or somewhat more screwed up. Also, I spell absoluteley...like that. Wow.
Re: Words you just can't spell right!
I was thinking definitely before I even opened this thread! Looking at it now, I found one way to help me remember: the vowel order is e-i-i-e

Re: Words you just can't spell right!
Lately I'm misspelling almost everything. And leaving out entire small words. I need more sleep. Looking forward to December.

Hahaha. This post made me burst into laughter at work. Oops!
Re: Words you just can't spell right!
I can't spell cloak!! I keep typing 'cloack.' This is super unhelpful, seeing as my MCs are wearing cloaks for most of the book....
I also have a magical stone called an Eirin, and I keep writing 'Eiring.'

Re: Words you just can't spell right!
LOL - I have a character named "Cior" and I keep accidentally writing either Ciro or Crio.
Win.
Re: Words you just can't spell right!
I have a Sophie, which I've misspelled in every way possible while still keeping "S" as the first letter. I particularly liked "Shophe".

Re: Words you just can't spell right!
I get practise and practice muddled. Which makes no sense because I never fail with advice/advise!

you can turn it off and go fix everything in December, that's what I did, I was spending way to long going back and fixing it the first few days.

Re: Words you just can't spell right!
Guarantee.
Hey! I got it right that time.
Re: Words you just can't spell right!
Oh, I also have trouble with "Floccinaucinihilipilification."
Re: Words you just can't spell right!
Conscious. (I had to look up the word on Google to get the correct spelling. -_-) I can not spell it. Every. Single. Time. I spell it wrong.
Re: Words you just can't spell right!
I can't spell Conscious write either! I also always spell minute like minuet. and don't feel bad Creative; I had to Google patient to get it write.

Re: Words you just can't spell right!
I've spelled "actually" as "acutalaly" this year. I crack up every time I think of it because it sounds so silly.
Re: Words you just can't spell right!
Differant, techknowledgy. Minutes ect. There are a lot as I have a bit of dyslexia
But one of the things that gets me every time is while typing at full speed. within becomes withing.
Re: Words you just can't spell right!
Unnecessary, restaurant, and gorgeous are the three I have trouble with. I even have a sticky note on my wall with those three on it. ^_^
