(Third Annual) This thread was originally started in honor of ALA Banned Book Week. I've started this three years in a row. It's like a tradition like the Challenge the person below you which I borrowed from ASMR. Disclaimers for this thread: ('cause I've done this for a few years) 1. We do not support the idea of banning books.  2. We are doing this for fun and it should not be taken seriously.  3. If you are seriously offended by the fact that we would write these scenes into books please consider the following: a. It is out of context. b. You probably unwittingly own a banned book without knowing it. Check the complete list before you go off and say, OMG, you guys are horrible. There will be at *least* one book that you roll your eyes and say, WTH is that? c. We are not popular enough to get our books banned, and by hoping in a weird way that they will get banned, you are helping our egos. ^.~ d. If you are religious, the Qu'ran, the (I think Ramayana), the Torah, the Bible all have been challenged or Banned. (KJV of the Bible if you plan to be snooty, by even more ironically Jews once, and Atheists the second time). (the Art of War, I also believe was challenged/banned.) (And also, the Bible probably contains more than half of the issues that Christians ban other books for. Christians banned Moll Flanders. All the issues the banned Moll Flanders for is in the Old Testament. Particularly Genesis)  4. This is not a thread for hot debate on the moralities of book banning. It is for listing why you think your book will get banned. If you would like to do so--please start a separate thread. You don't have to stick to Nanowrimo for this thread either. End disclaimers. And add to the irony... this thread was challenged and asked to be banned before. (Because people were offended by the contents.) The challenge failed, BTW, just in case you'd like to challenge it again. Caveats: ('cause I like to point out the humor) You probably have to write Young Adult and under to get banned *most* of the time. If you wish not to get banned and are writing in this category, remember such great rules as "You can't have the word black in the title." And you can't have any mention of cannibalism. And it can't mention any body parts, you can't have characters eating worms, because that's unsanitary. And you can't *offend* anyone with your use of religion, ages, race, sexuality, sexual orientation, talking animals (Beatrice Potter), kids doing stunts, talk about anything sexual (Includes rape because it might be called "Soft porn"), class, the use of the word black, racial slurs, or may you ever swear. No damn. Oh, no magic, no mention of witches, and no fantasy (That promotes Satanism and teaches them to do evil satanic spells). No characters may ever die once. No cursing at parents. No disobeying parents. No dead parents. No dead siblings. No dying adults. You may not mention anyone dead or dying. And by all means it can't be "icky." You can't have the same name as anyone connected to "Socialism" or "Marxism." No talk or showing of nudity. And you can't use any words with "tit" in them. (Title will now be called tidle just not to offend anyone.) No talking about over eating, bad eating habits. It can't be a "Downer" (Anne Frank) Good luck getting it published. So yes, this was started as satire. If you have any further questions about said history of said thread, you are welcome to PM me. Do not start it in the thread.

I think I've topped myself this year (no pun intended) with the following: - Graphic depictions of post-rooftop jump bodies. - Self-defenestration. - Lots of swearing. - Drug abuse. - Writing from the perspective of a porn actress. - Gang rape. - Alcohol abuse. - Dead parent. - Implied pedophilia. - Sex outside of wedlock. - Adultery. - Writing from the perspective of a drug dealer. - Murder. - Multiple counts of unlawful conduct. - Homosexual characters. - Writing from the perspective of people who think it's entertaining to film fake suicides/suicide attempts. - Divorce. - Multiple references to human nature. This book, it has everything you'd want, no? xD ... or everything you'd want to ban. Actually, looking at that list, it seems like this novel will be all kinds of screwed up ... more so than I thought. o_o;

There are a lot of reasons why my book would be banned. The biggest being it may "encourage children to take up shooting schools, as well as commit crimes like robbery and murder."

Reasons I'd be banned: MC=Gay Conversation about gay pillows (yeah, took that from the dare thread) Cursing Magical Creatures Teenagers doing stupid stunts Attempted murder Probably Scarcasm, there's gotta be someone out there who's had an attempted ban for sarcasm Supposed implied rape/adultry (really it's neither but I don't think that's going to be explained until the third book) Uhm...I'll probably post more when I actually start writing

I kidnap, beat-up, rape, and kill a girl within the first few chapters of the book. Her TEACHER becomes literally obsessed with her and her murder, so he digs through her personal life to find out more. It turns out she was selling naked pictures of herself and prostituting herself out to get money-mind you, she's only 16-and the main character, her teacher, uses another prostitute and digs through that side of the city to find who killed her. It's going to be gritty, nasty, and graphic. Not to mention that there's serial killers, pimps, smoking, heavy drinking, and main characters that are full-out crazy. And some spousal abuse. Sounds happy, doesn't it?

Oooh! This sounds like fun! 1. "You encourage readers to revolt against governments in a violent manner." This is probably the only one that might have a slightly legitimate argument, because violence against oppressive governments is a major theme. But they're not like, totally unapologetic about blowing things up, murdering people, blackmailing people, and doing all sorts of other not-very-nice things. They're just kind of a "we will do what is necessary" kind of attitude. And violence in this case is necessary. 2. "You encourage readers to have premarital sex!" Ya got me there, my FMC and my MMC do have sex. And no, they are not married nor do they intend to get married. But hey, Mara is twenty-seven and Octavius is twenty-two, I think if they want to have sex, they have that right. They're adults, they can deal with the potential consequences. Please note that none of the teenage characters are having sex. Also note that the only ones mentioned having sex are those who understand the consequences and are ready to deal with what their actions bring them. Sure, they may not be married but... meh, there are a lot of married couples who probably shouldn't be having sex either. 3. "This is filled with racist themes." Why yes, my project is filled with racist things. It is a steampunk world inspired by the Victorian Era, and slavery and racism were a part of that. And yes, I will deal with it, and yes, some characters will say some very awful things. But pay attention to the main cast and realize that ya know, it's also a story of attempting to abolish slavery and working towards equality. 4. "This is filled with women who wield revolvers and wear pants and won't make me sammiches." Yup. I've got women who like to shoot things. I've got women who refuse to wear dresses. I've got a woman-pirate and she is the most merciless pirate to ever sail the seas and soar the skies. But ya know, that's the emperor's fault. If he would have realized that women have a place then Mara Queen of Rats would be an Imperial Knight and be legally terrorizing citizens. Rather than illegally terrorizing the imperial army. 5. "This is not a happy story, everyone's getting killed!" Well, yes. Plotting revolutions is dangerous work. People will die, good people, bad people, and everyone in between. Rebellion isn't a safe path. 6. "Copious abuse of drugs and alcohol, how dare you!" Opium and other drugs exist. And it has to be dealt with. And my characters drink a lot, they are no different than the twenty-somethings running around the world as is. 7. "The main character is missing an arm, that's just icky! And he has a mechanical prosthetic!" Well now you're just not being very nice. Have some respect for amputees, particularly veterans. It's not icky, it's not gross, it's just a fact of life. And aren't you impressed with his one-armed mechanical skills? I mean, he is routinely fixing his mechanical arm with one hand. Come on, it's kinda cool if you ask me. Oh, wait, you did. 8. "You're encouraging women to use their sexuality to manipulate people!" Oh please, this occurs every day. Or what, did you think that your girlfriend accidentally wore that shirt that reveals her cleavage a little too much on the day she asked you to come meet her parents? I'm doubtful. Men and women use their sexuality to manipulate people. My characters are not above that either. It works, and Gemma is doing it for the good of others. Get over it. 9. "There's MAGIC. And everyone knows that magic encourages kids to become satanists!" Okay then... this story really isn't intended for kids. In fact, it's intended for college students who, I think, can handle magic and tell the difference between magic and the devil. Because ya know, I'm pretty sure conjuring white roses is totally evil. 10. "Your main character is an atheist! You are supporting atheism in your work!" Yeah I guess you could say that. I'm an atheist as well, go figure why on earth would my MMC be one too? Yes. Octavius is an atheist, he refuses to believe in his world's traditional gods, he refuses to worship them, he also refuses to believe that his emperor has a divine right to rule.

Sigh. My books are so going to be banned. But I'll enjoy it!

Incest and Imperialism -- that could pretty much be the title of my novel. An English girl develops an unnatural (unconsummated but tense nonetheless) relationship with her father, who has been in India serving in the army most of her childhood, after his return to England upon the death of her mother. They go to India, the girl becomes attracted to the culture, falls in love with an Indian man, becomes embroiled in a small, militant independence faction, and in the end winds up slitting her own father's throat and "going native." Issues of class, sex, gender, race, religion, and cultural difference are controversial enough; throw in some social taboo, obsession, unhealthy yearning, manipulation, violent revolt, and murder, and you've got a winner!

(Specifically: because the main romantic plotline - which is the driving catalyst of a good half the book - revolves around a healthy lesbian relationship which is treated exactly the same as a straight relationship would be and nobody considers this at all problematic. AND WE CAN'T HAVE THAT.)

Um... -Nazis (sort of) -cannibalism -encouraging violent revolt against the government -encouraging treason/conspiratorial meetings and plans -murder -mentions of civilian and possibly child soldiers -belief in something other than conventional religion (again, sort of - one of the main guys was raised with basic Christian beliefs but they were a little skewed (e.g. God always being very removed from the world, 'lesser gods', like Mars being the god of soldiers and things like that).) -graphic violence -language -implied homosexuality/bisexuality -uses of 'Republic Dog' as a cross-class/possibly cultural slur -one main character was tortured and kept as a slave from the ages of 8 to 15, which means... -implied pedophilia -both main characters parents are dead -a nationalist, imperialist, totalitarian kratocracy drawing heavily on ancient Rome and Nazi Germany -set after a nuclear war And that's probably not all. So yeah. Banned list, here I come! 8D

My book (tries to) bring to light corruption in a democratic but capitalist government and supports opposing said government. I like to imagine what, I don't know, Fox News would say about it if it ever got published: "This is a vile book that supports anarchy and communism, written by a socialist left-wing nut!" And then it would get banned.

Mentions of drugs and using them for creativity 3. Characters who want to overthrow a regime 4. Graphic violence: including a character nearly getting killed in a bomb blast (which cripples him for a time), and depictions of politically mediated murders 5. Disturbing delusions courtesy of a young character who gets a psychotic break 6. Discussion of child abuse--more on the emotional end 7. The ramifications of a character's father having a second family as a result of an affair 8. Irreverent discussion on the Catholic Church and what some (not all) the characters think of it 9. Irreverent discussion on a straight wedding night 10. What happens in another character's bachelor party---let's just say waking up with the bowling ball chained to his foot is the least of his problems 11. Various kids born out of wedlock 12. Rape: another character is kidnapped, tortured and raped for two weeks. The psychological results of this are frankly, disturbing

Reasons why "Deathwitch" will be banned - The title has "death" in it - The title has "witch" in it - Zombies - Zombies being decapitated - The MC's parents die - The MC's best friend's parents die - The MC's little sister dies - People die in general - The MC dies - The MC is resurrected as a revenant - Other people coming back from the dead as either zombies or revenants - Magic - Discussion of sex - (maybe) Actual sex - General violence - Joking about violence - Having an agnostic MC - Having atheist characters - Discussion and threats of rape - The MC's friend is a lesbian - Having life on another world (although the word "life" is used loosely) - Nudity And "Deathwitch" is YA as well as paranormal. May as well get out the pitchforks and torches now.

Reasons why "The Bombardiers" will be banned. 1.) First and foremost: the MCs are a terrorist group who are overthrowing their government. Violently. 2.) Self-harm. Lots of it. 3.) Extreme depictions of violence. Terrorists, guys. Terrorists. 4.) Some questionable religious themes. 5.) Questionable mental states in ALL the main characters. 6.) Very, very dark emotions. 7.) Government-sanctioned torture and genocide. 8.) Lots and lots of death. I think I should stop before I get tagged as a potential threat....

1. Lesbians (My main character had a crush on a girl, and I'm pretty sure she likes her back) 2. Depression (My main character was depressed) 3. Self-harm (My main character was a cutter) 4. Suicide (My novel begins with the revelation that my main character has killed herself) 5. Language (Oh yes, there will be swearing. I'm fully planning on the "climax" including a scene where my MC's crush Kara goes into a grief-induced rage, screaming and throwing things and crying, and she will very likely drop the F-bomb several times. The rest of the characters are mild pottymouths, too) 6. Possible masturbation/implied masturbation (These are college students, mind you. Lonely and sexually frustrated) 7. Mentions of sex/sex jokes (See above. Also, college students can be immature, sometimes. Hence the sex jokes) 8. Implied atheism (I don't know if there's a single religious character in the lot) 9. Painting religion in a less-than positive light (religion played a factor in MC's suicide) 10. General debauchery and absence of "morality"

The U.S is run by an oppressive fascist theocracy (religious leaders are the generals) which parallels historically viscious regimes and is made out to be severely stupid. 4. Atheist themes. 5. Somewhat graphic descriptions of killing. 6. Encourages free thought, self-expression and individuality. 7. It might give kids the idea to be "rebellious and unacceptable." 8. There's a genderless character. Genderless folk are recognized (I use gender-neutral pronouns when referring to the character) instead of erased. WHAT AN ABOMINATION. 9. The religion in the book is an allegory for Christianity. 10. There's a group of beings who are oppressed and discriminated by the religious people in this world. They represent LGBTQ+ people and the struggle to obtain equality. 11. Encourages people to see and treat everyone as equals. IMAGINE THAT. 12. Extreme anger and swearing at certain times. 13. There's a scantily clad woman that is independent and doesn't have multiple sex partners. There will probably be more things as I continue along with planning.

Don't know yet, but there'll probably be swearing, and after that, all follows. Definitely murder, and darkness, probably alcohol consumption, maybe smoking. On a side note, isn't it stupid how people think that showing smoking in films, or any drug use, apparently 'encourages' kids to smoke and do drugs? So therefore we should of course make any movie with those things rated R. Because Pinnochio is really that bad. xP

One society practices a mixture of Christianity and animism. OH, THE PERVERSION OF TRUTH. One main character is gay. Another is genderless. Neither is struck down by God's wrath. In fact, no god ever shows up and any that exist are highly unlikely to give a bucket of rat spit about anything that's going on. Self-injury. An extensive black market. Drugs. Magic drugs. Alcohol. Magic in general. Death of a child. Death with no other point than to illustrate the frequent pointlessness of death. Prostitution-riddled backstory. Oh, and the United States doesn't survive the apocalypse. How unpatriotic.

Mostly because I'm talking flippantly about "serious subjects" that shouldn't be joked about. Also, because I'm talking about the Truth, and however much people talk, they don't tend to like that much. Also, I'll likely write characters who think for themselves and make their own decisions. There probably won't be sex (unless I need to up word count), but there may be swearing, and the proposed existence of creatures that couldn't possibly exist in real life. And believe me, that would be enough to get it banned by many of the parents I know. Even if I took out the sex and swearing.

It's a YA with a female-to-male MC. 'Nuff said. It also deals with issues of ableism, racism, and eugenics under a fascist government. Someone's probably going to die. After all, you can't have a good rebellion without someone dying, right? :P This book will be hard enough to get published as it is. If it ever gets published, banning will be a given. That the adult novel I worked on last year is way 'worse' is completely beside the point ;)

While seemingly harmless to most, I would say ... 1) Because Death is a person 2) Because Death isn't bad 3) Because Death (may) get married ... ah. That sounds not very ... meh. I suppose in my head, I mean, though it isn't gory or choke-full of swearwords and sex, it'd be banned by most all Christian anything because it promotes the idea that God doesn't exist ... (though not intentionally). And people in my 'circles' would take it much too seriously and put me in a cage and stare at me like I'm some strange new species of animal because I'd write such a thing ... Something like that. I may not even be able to tell anyone about my story because they'd have nice long talks with me for sure. And NaNo is 'sposed to be fun, not give your parents a reason to discover some shocking secret about you and lecture you for two hours and wonder at their suddenly black-sheep-of-the-family-daughter. Ahem. Yeah. So that's why/where my book would be banned. I'm really not great at this explanation thing ... but anyone get what I mean? (please? lol)

Well I'm taking a canonized historical figure, putting her into a post-apocolyptic world, I'm getting rid of God but keeping the angels, not as "god's messengers" but more as a conglomeration of all of the different "heavenly messenger" type beings from different religions, and making her an lesbian.

My book is about cancer (you know, scary and not appropriate for children/teens), including some graphic medical scenes, and the characters live together before they get married (some sex scenes but they are implied). I think those are the big ones... probably some language issues too.

Hmm..Oh, boy, NaNo 09 had practically everything that could get a book banned including (but not limited to): 1. A gay relationship at the forefront of the story 2. Nazis. Lots of Nazis. 3. Concentration camps 4. Discussions of rape and actual rape 5. Prison life and the abuses on both sides therein 6. Genocide (and people who don't disagree with it) 7. Communism. The real one, too. 8. Major violence and mutilation 9. Deconstruction of the ideas that all oppressed people will ban together to stop their oppressors even if they hate each other 10. Deconstruction of the 'you help us, we'll accept you' trope 11. A bittersweet but ultimately happy ending for the gay relationship And this list is not all inclusive. I'm pretty sure that the Modern-Day Scarlet Pimpernel story I'm toying with would be banned because the three main characters are in a monogamous, stable, loving marriage with each other.

If I ever get this published, I’d have children sheltering mothers beating down my door before I could even call my parents to tell them the news! This is just the first book; I’m hoping to make it at least three! Ok here the words I can hear them saying if Wartorn Stars ever make it to a book store “You swear allot, you’re teaching bad thing to our children!” It’s a book about bounty hunters turned fugitives…they’re going to swear to beat the band. “You have magic, SATANIST!” Yes, as a deeply rooted part of another culture that the characters are trying to understand. “You kill people, it promotes killing.” My first chapter, hell the whole reason the bloody plot moves, is the sister of one of the bounty hunters is killed. The next, another’s parents and baby sister are killed, which helps cement my bad guy! “You have nudity!” Ok it’s quick, and it’s during the time he’s captured, I don’t think they want him hiding a weapon when they know he’s a hand to hand expert. “You’re characters have unhealthy eating habits, it’s bad for kids to see.” I repeat, bounty hunters turned fugitives! They don’t have a lot of choices; they eat what they can get, from bugs to normal food. “It’s quite sad, it might cause depression.” Yes it’s sad…on the surface. Down just a bit, it shaping up to be a story about learning to let people help you, and that you don’t face the world alone. “You have women who do not just focus on raising good kids and being loyal wives.” My FMC is the leader of one of the ships, is a sniper, and has a mean streak a mile wide, kills, and willing causes panic to help a friend escape the gallows. Another FC is the head of the medic ship, and can still outshoot some of the guys on the combat ships. “You charters are using powers; not using the body’s god gave them!” BOUNTY HUTERS! They’re not dumb enough to take on some fugitives without a few cybernetic. “You support Wicca and Atheism!” Yes, yes I do. My FMC, MMC, and most of the others are atheist, the medic ship is mostly Wiccan, and I don’t care what you think otherwise. “You have a gay character!” In my defense, he’s bi, and never been in a relationship. “You’re showing kids doing crazy stunts; mine might try it and could get hurt.” I think I have one, maybe two teens in the book, the rest are early twenties to late forties…and all are very well trained so they don’t hurt themselves. “You tortured that poor, sweet, old women, she only wanted what was best for her kids!” Said women is also a terrorist who has killed millions and started the group that’s trying to kill the bounty hunters, they had rights to do that. “Most mothers don’t do what she did; you should have her be nice like a real mother.” This is the same women from above, read the list of her crimes, she does not care about anyone, she orders the hit on her own daughter and hunts the other one down like a mad dog! Place your bets on how long it takes for this to be banned.

The series... - suggests people are meant to have powers, whether super or magical or both - plays heavily with redefining good vs evil and everything in between - insults religion as a whole rather regularly, but praises faith - displays nudity without sex, mentions sex without sharing scenes with nudity, and features both among unmarried people regardless of relationship status or gender. - Lots of fighting and death, some mentions of rape, lots of crime and vigilantism as if it were the norm - Written by a transwoman who happens to be a modern day Pagan This year's book... - Calls the (in-story) government too weak to take control "as governments often are," but it will hold on for dear life no matter how bad they are if control is had. - Suggests the existence of life on other planets (never mind all else that has happened so far, or that the world this takes place on is not Earth but rather a parallel sort of planet). - The MC is an assassin who ran from home at age 9, and began killing people for money when she was not yet a teenager. (She's 34 by the time this book starts) - Secondary protagonist is a highly successful college boy of 17 years who was given up for adoption--he's only ever lived in foster homes in spite the financial support received from a "friend"--after being born the product of a rape. That's what I can recall off the top of my head.

Out of the characters I've developed so far, one has two husbands (who may or may not also be married to each other, I haven't developed either of them far enough to know yet since they're not really part of the main plot), and one is genderqueer. Also, in some parts of the US, having a black main character would probably be enough to get it banned. And in some parts of the world the main theme of class struggle could get it banned.

Reaper (my novel this year) would be banned because of: -Having Death as the main character. -Featuring a drug addicted doctor who runs a mental hospital and rapes/abuses his patients as a main character. -Rather graphic scenes of violence, suicide and death. -Sex, some consensual and some not. -Use of 'characters' such as God, the Devil, angels and demons. -A view of religion and all it's parts that could be offensive. -Vulgar language. -Looking at stealing in a positive light. (A main character is a kleptomaniac) -Detailed and disturbing accounts from a mental hospital. -Torture. Believe it or not, this is all in a comedy.

Like several other people before me, lesbians! Being treated as any other relationship. Other stuff: -Non-religious characters. Not sure how much this is going to come through, though. -A demon character who is not evil (she is, in fact, the best friend of one of the lesbian couple). -Magic. That's studied and researched in the same way as science. -More LGBT characters. The important part of that phrase being characters -The main lesbian couple consists of a human and a dryad. Also, they are (at the start of the story) 15. That's all I can think of off the top of my head. I'm sure there will be more by the time it's written, though.

And then there's all the horrible imagery that will probably come up from the (true) historical stories that the ghosts haunting them are based on, including dismemberment, drowning, burning, and DEAD ORPHANS TIED TO NUNS.

This is an entertaining thread....xD This is more of a comprehensive list of stuff in the series in general...I'm not really sure what all will be in the one I'm working on for NaNo. -Magic, and plenty of it -Creatures revered as near-gods -Extended narratives about a pantheon of spirits...polytheism basically, what have you, and a group of characters dedicated to it -Cults! Sort of, I guess -Maiming, death, blood, torture, etc -Unlawful acts, references to a black market, thieves and other criminals help the main characters on several occasions, rebellion against government, general defiance towards authority -An important supporting character is bisexual and is shown in different relationships with both sexes; may be some other implied homosexuality -Promiscuous female character (there's no actual sex scenes since this is a YA book (hopefully), they're only vaguely implied, but ya know, still.) -Alcohol, perhaps some drug references, deals with overcoming addiction (not main focus of story) -Deals with racism, classicism, sexism, etc, as well as attempted mass murder, genocide, blood feud between two countries, problems with leaders, etc -Lots of female warriors, strong-willed females, females who generally kick everyone else's butts, males who support their outlook/behavior (including the main characters) Oh, and powerful female leaders -Some mild cursing -Deals with problems with war, some characters (including main characters) have anti-war sentiment, parallels drawn between US and world history and the history of the story's universe There's probably more...

Part 1: -There are evil sadistic mad scientists, one of which is a mass murderer who targeted a 10 year old's family. -Said mad scientists do things like amputate people, inject them with various diseases and chemicals to mutate them, steal their memories, control them, turn them into puppets, graft limbs onto them, etc. etc. -The whole plot involves preventing a sacrifice to a goddess, but said goddess actually uses the sacrifices to kill only 95% of life on the planet. -Princess Parivere is a snobbish boy crazy girl who hates her parents because they're incompetent. Part 2: -A group thieves are the main characters. -One thief is a braggart who loves preforming tricks, one is a magical dream, and the last is a snarky girl who teases her friends and makes fun of everything. -They (naturally) steal stuff. -The two empires war all the time over a magical book. -One of the empires uses dream magic. -A sadistic 12 year old empress uses her nightmare powers to get what she wants -What kick-starts the plot is a part where a creepy royal wants the thieves to steal a weapon. When the weapon turns out to be a girl, the royal man wants to do certain things to the weapon girl. -The snarky girl and the braggart are brother and sister, who ran away from their parents. -Everyone dies at the ending Part 3: -The main character, a snarky slobish otaku, uses magic to kill bad guys -The evil goddess has a lesbian crush on the otaku -The otaku dates a boy who later moves in with her even though they're not married -One character battles heavy depression (Not sure if my book would be banned because of this, but...) -A fight to the death between the goddess and the otaku ensues at the end -One character, a young catgirl who is the evil goddess' sister, dies at the end. Finally, throughout the whole series, abuse is a recurring theme. A very recurring theme. ...Yeah.

I could see my novel being banned because it's actually too positive, radically positive and empowering. Most of our media actually revels in the grotesque and the violent. The basic example being that we're allowed to turn on the TV and watch depictions of people murdering each other constantly, but two people having sex is absolutely taboo. I think that high-level intensity of these things is only banned in order to make us crave it more, the way alcohol is banned until 21 in the USA. My novel is about radical health and positivity and involves real, scientific, applicable ways to heal any disease, change your emotional state at will, and exposes a lot of the subtle conspiracies in our media and culture that keeps us "dumbed down" and psychically sick in order to make us buy products, and in general is used for population control. My story is the story of a guy who basically decides he will discover the ultimate potential of a human being, and goes about shifting his lifestyle gradually toward that end - by means of diet, meditation, exercise and psychological techniques, all of which are expressly outlined for anyone to use. I grew up on spiritual books like the tao te ching which blew my mind wide open, but lacked practical applications. Meanwhile I was finding books with plenty of technique, but they were so dry and lifeless it was like reading a phone book. What we need to evolve into the happiest, most loving and playful beings ever are STORIES that engage us and show us that it's actually possible to be radiantly healthy and inspired ALL THE TIME and we don't need to buy anything in order to achieve that. That's very threatening to a lot of industries, definitely the type of book to be banned.

Well lets see. It is a fantasy set in anther world. (Sadly that is enough for some parents.) FMC is a teenager who disobeys her Father and gets disowned. (Granted she is of age in her world, but still some will have problems with this.) A non-christen religion made up of gods and goddess that are really just faces of one supreme being that is without gender. Slavery and forced labor, no one have a problem with it. My plot absolutely requires that a kid dies. Graphically. In fact, it's a horror novel, so EVERYONE dies graphically. Furthermore, my plot absolutely requires that one or two characters be Muslim. And not the stereotypical extremist sort of Muslim, but the young, successful, secular kind who are just trying to balance their faith and their daily life. Y'now... the sort that other kinds of extremists want to believe don't exist. Finally: my monsters are going to be referred to as angels, demons and jinn, and it's going to be unclear as to what exactly they really are. People tend to dress the unfamiliar in familiar things, so there are going to be people praying to the monsters and viewing them as signs that God Has Come Again, who are then going to be summarily burned to death. In fact, the only people who display any sort of curiosity and scientific interest in the critters will be wholly secular. I didn't even really intend to demonize the faithful, but I have one Baptist character, and he is a consummate assjerk that nearly gets his son killed. Thinking of making one of the Courthouse Six a born-again Christian and one of the surprisingly good examples of the breed.

My book would be banned for the following reasons: -Under age drinking -CORPSES WOO!! Haha, no seriously there are multiple naked dead bodies in this book. 0_o -Use of the F word a few times and other lighter curse words more frequently (in context you would do the same thing. Trust me on this!) -Issues with sexual orientation -Skipping class(es) (well hey! You would skip classes too if you were trying to solve a mystery! Classes are distracting you know!) -Talking in the library...because that's just not done! -Sneaking around behind parents' backs -Mention of stereotypes -Murderer...at least one -Stalker -Crimes are talked about frequently, some are graphically described. Did I mention that the 4 main characters are freshmen in high school? Ooooh yeah....this book would so be banned hahahah. XD Compared to some of the other posts I'm reading mine isn't nearly as bad. Since this year's project (Chaos Angel Spanner Book 3) is the sequel to last year's, the reasons it is certain to get banned remain the same: 1) underage interracial teenage lesbian sex as an act of war against an authoritarian conservative American government, a leader of which is one of the partners' grandfather and the other's mortal enemy; 2) the story's depiction of the conservative rulers as ruthlessly tyrannical villains and their "patriot Christian" religion as a fanatic cult that worships the US government as the literal Second Coming of Christ; 3) its complementary positive depiction of populism, anarchism, and socialism. Any one of those would provoke the conservative establishment and its lamestream media propaganda outlets into hysterical jihad mode in a microsecond. Combine the three, then add live mind viruses, and their heads will explode. We can't have that happen. It's also the entire reason for Spanner to exist. If it doesn't get banned in America, I haven't done my job.

From what I know of my plot detailing so far, it probably will be hit by the banhammer relatively lightly. However, I can see some people thinking "telepathy" is too close to "magic" for their tastes. There may also be some violence and anti-government action (not necessarily at the same time). The latter might be the biggest problem since the government definitely loses (if I'm feeling merciful next month some government members may stay in power, but the other side's viewpoint will definitely prevail, and in some countries even that would likely be too extreme). There will also be some discussion of human rights and responsibilities.

Features, among other things -Rebellion against a government -Murder, Rape, Torture, war crimes, other atrocities -Religion plays a massive role in the plot, and the main antagonists are the leaders of one, so that'll do it -Characters summon and control spirits, which function in a similar fashion to summoned demons in other fantasy -Characters engage in actions and behaviours as a consequence of hatred All in all, lots of horrible things happening. Which will probably do it.

My current NaNo would be banned because... 1. It's YA, which makes all of the following infractions much much worse. 2. I have 5 teenagers, all of whom are trying to figure out who they are. However, I've always thought that getting your book banned is, in some ways, an honor. Many of the literary giants of the past couple hundred years have had their books show up on banned book lists. I'm in the U.S., and halfway through high school moved from the midwest to the deep south. Books that were required at my midwest high school were banned at my southern high school. Amazing.

Basic concept: struggling with morality surrounding killings, whether or not certain killings are justifiable or "they deserved it," etc. Either way, the main character does a lot of soulless killing for the majority of the book. 2. Graphic depictions of murder victims. 3. Implications that high school girls attempt to seduce their counselor to pass the year (and first chapter, aww yeahh) 4. Main character picks an older homeless man off the streets, refers to him as her "pet," lives with him, and he's totally okay with all of it. 5. Lots of swearing. And the severity depends on the character. 6. Main character's own father taught her the art of killing. 7. Hookers an' strippers. And gambling. It's Vegas, baby, nbd. 8. Drug deals by high school students. 9. Frank talk about a minor having sex with an adult. 10. High school bullying brushed off like "nbd"

I also make fun of those 'throwing-my-religion-in-your-face' type of people by saying specifically in my book all religious debates are stupid and pointless. (Nothing against religion, just people who throw it in other peoples face. I'm a Christian myself)

It would, in all honesty, be an honour to have my novel banned. Let's see, what have we got here? Well, there's a bastardised, lying, people-slaughtering government of an atheistic country in which gay is more than okay. There's emotional abuse by my MC's parents, and she and my other FMC will eventually be the main pair of the story. There may also be some open mockery of theism at one point, depending on where my characters take me.

I added a child who is intersexed into my novel using a name from a region where it's not very accepted, so I'm likely to get banned. He was born female, identifies as a male, but hasn't had the operation yet. Still getting around to live freeze drying humans and genocide... neither which make me feel good. I also have homosexuals, single parents (I know! Can't have that.) and it is turning out to be a "downer" still working on breaking dishes to not wash them.

There's no gay sex in it, responsible use of alcohol, no lewd depictions of characters who get raped or shot or stabbed, and furthermore I believe that it is a wholesome story that when read will fill the reader with ideas that they might not have thought of otherwise. Everyone knows that ideas are the most dangerous thing in the world.

My MC's mother pays a male hooker to rape her on her 13th birthday as a "growing up thing." My MC does end up filing charges (once she gets up enough guts to tell people), and the mother ends up dying a slow, painful, lonely death, but I could see where people would have a problem with this. Oh, and my MC moves out right after this, which I could see people whine about because she's 13: no 13-year-olds need to live without their parents (she lives in their guest house but she doesn't have any contact with them and she pays rent), according to many. I think the reasoning is justified, but people will find reasons to whine and attempt to ban books.

Well the main character is a serial killer, so.... and her dad murdered her mom, as well. In one scene murder is presented as a humane act. At one point there's some pretty serious blasphemy by an actual saint. It's going to end with a suicide. One character takes a lot of sexual photography, and some of his photography is of children tied up. There's some underage drinking by minor characters and a fair amount of cocaine use. And date rape preceded by extended stalking and sexual harassment. Hm. And here I thought this was the tamest thing I've written in years.

Let's see, my reasons... - Lots of pot smoking and drinking by a 17 y/o MMC. - Four high school students brutally murdered. - MMC intentionally catching the flu and giving it to his principal to get him out of the way. - Two gay characters. - MMC is an atheist. - Cops depicted as the Bad Guys. (Setting is New Orleans, where they often are.) - My characters are kids, and they talk like kids - lots of swearing and liberal use of the F word. - I use public officials (President Nixon, LA Governors McKeithen/Edwards, N.O. Mayor Moon Landrieu) in references. This is going to be an even bigger problem in the sequel because my MMC gets into legal trouble and tangles with the district attorney, who (at the time) was Harry Connick, SR. (I never mention his name, but do allude to him attending his son's piano recital.)

Currently, I'm deciding between two projects that will be banned for opposite reasons. One will be banned because despite being set in a universe built on the premise that Christianity is true, and thus magic is entirely the work of the devil and there are no gods but the Christian God, there are demons. And demon deals. And the MC has demonic powers. I also have prophets and saints in modern times and am tentatively calling the series "Saint Nicky." The other will be banned because the universe it (mainly) takes place in has no God or gods, and my MC has pretty conclusive proof of that.

My books will be banned because the first book in the series was largely written when I was 14 or 15- the plot is amazingly still worth writing about, but it appeals to a YA audience. My problem is that I have tons of stuff that YAs would like but my characters start off really messed up, attempting gruesome suicides and killing their parents. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Curse you, twisted mind. :P

High school kids discover a brothel Church that's too far right Church that's too far left Church that townfolk believe isn't really a church (in an of itself not a cause for banning, but the Methodist minister attends when he is not preaching. Town contracts found to be granted to relatives and in-laws..and it doesn't help that everyone in town is related to or married to everyone else. It's the fact my book exposes this that will get it banned.

Why will my book be banned? I've recently read it, and it contains... well, sexual things: Several detailed sexual scenes between several characters. (I mean, by twos, no orgies, although there is one scene where several? a few? couples have a group mating) Oral sex Several gruesome death scene when my MC (who has poison in his claws when he becomes an adult) really uses his claws on several SOB's who attack him first. Several other gross-out things... And that's why I think no conventional publisher will touch this book with a ten-foot pole (or even a nine-foot Greek.)

Reviving this thread as Camp Nanowrimo is about to start: Judging from the outline, my camp novel might be banned because: - It contains extramarital sex, including: FMC and her first boyfriend cheating on each other, FMC sleeping with the homosexual MMC, and a combination of the previous two types before the FMC and the MMC form a mixed-orientation relationship - the FMC's mother dies (off-screen, yet this makes it worse - she dies off-screen because the FMC arrives to late to say good-bye to her) - the MMC's parents are the only ones who are portrayed as pious Christians - and they are definitely not the characters who are meant to be appealing figures; to make things worse... - ... the MMC, and later also the FMC, undergoes a lot of trouble because conveying the family's values (alas including homophobia) played an important role in the MMC's upbringing - the FMC, too, is negatively influenced by her (overprotective) parents - so the book might be banned because it apparently incites younger readers to turn away from their parents - an obviously innocent person is executed - in the third of the four parts of the plot, the FMC (from whose point of view the story is told) advocates the idea that the world and human beings are evil, whatever appears good and holy will turn out to be an illusion, and people who attempt to improve the world and stick with moral values rather than egoistically pursuing their interests are naive idealists. The first two parts include many events which apparently justify this opinion. - the idea that people are done any good if life's harsher aspects are concealed from them - which, I suppose, is a mindset shared by many who support banning books - is strongly criticised in the novel, inter alia by means of the dying-mother-subplot

What I'm planning to write for Camp NaNo could well be banned in so many countries if it ever gets published. It contains (but is not limited to) Incest between brother and sister Teenage self-induced abortion Teenage pregnancy Homosexuality Teenagers contracting STIs Computer hacking Murder Stalking ...and that's about it... so far... Most of it isn't in an overtly negative way, either. Well the murder is, and to a certain extent the stalking, but the rest of it is just kind of there, with no moral judgement offered.

Same. Substitute zombies for vampires. Also my main characters are an atheist rebel group who kill the Second Coming of Jesus. And I'm an atheist. I'm actually kind of worried if this were to ever get published. Becaue hopefully on reading it it would be immediately obvious that the point of the novel is not to show 'atheists are right, Christians are wrong' (actually if anything the book leans more towards being set in a universe where Christianity is correct) but rather to show that people should be free to live and believe whatever they want, and nobody should be hated or oppressed for that. But I think from a quick overview of the plot, it might seem like I was just writing a 'Christianity sucks' book.

I actually read quite a compelling essay on how some modern Christian vampires believe that Jesus was in fact a vampire. This was based mostly on the fact that he had his disciples drink his blood at the last supper. So basically... rock on!

I would buy every copy of this book. Just because I love the concept and I love serial killers (ok, that sounds wrong-I think serial killers are fascinating, not that they are doing good stuff. hahah). Not to mention that it sounds pretty darn realistic. And as we all know gritty, graphic, nasty books are the good ones! Next year you ought to write a story about unicorns and fluffy bunnies playing together. I think shhbabe is onto something when she mentions them.

Exactly! This is something I've never been able to understand - okay, so the act of rape is sexual in a purely mechanical way, but there's no way it can be called sexually provocative; there is nothing arousing about rape, any anyone who finds it to be arousing has some very very serious problems that need looking at. So definitely with you there! His banning definitely says more about his psyche than the writer's! I mean, I read Alice Sebold's Lucky for example, that first chapter was absolutely grueling ... but I didn't want to get my rocks off to it for one second. O_o;;

First off, I find it ironic that you mentioned that some people consider rape softcore porn right before mentioning that one of your characters used the actual rape as porn. Second, I will be happy no matter where in the QUILTBAG spectrum your character falls, but I can only think of two, maybe three asexual characters in media, and I would love to see more.

There's already a vampire pursuing her because she can turn him human when he's around her. I could easily make it a love triangle (or dodecahedron) with the same initial attraction in all cases.

Pretty sure it's a fact that one of the most prevalent sexual fantasies is the rape fantasy. I'm too lazy to look it up though, so I'm probably wrong. Not saying most people actually want to be raped or find it titillating when it actually happens. Just that they fantasize about a fantasy situation that involves rape. And lots of people do. I settled on asexual aromantic, which I know is really rare, but that's what she declared herself to be. She loves people and her friends a whole lot, but just doesn't feel attraction to either sex. The bird she rides is genderless... neither male nor female (Not intersexed either. Literally genderless. Has no sexual organs.) I'm skipping pronouns for that. I was debating asexual romantic homosexual, but then the character just went and decided on neither. I feel bad for her, though, having to go through people telling her she's less than for not wanting a family and putting up with people who don't or won't get it. I should clarify that someone listening to the rape and enjoying isn't enjoying it for th3 porn. She's probably thinking something on the order of "Serves her right." (The one being raped is her sister she set up the rape of her sister by manipulating her lover into doing it. She's listening to *make sure it happens* The reason? --;; Because her sister caught her with her lover and she doesn't trust her not to tell. Yeah... totally psychotic character. She later goes on to do some other really horrific stuff before she's caught. ) Totally used it properly: As a power play for the character in question. She enjoys power plays.

It's because it means a parent is dead and you can't expose the children with both parents to the thought that their parent could *gasp* die. That's soooo abusive. What about the children?! ('Cause we all know children lead an idyllic experience when growing up).

violence: MC gets hit by a cab. Books have been banned for less. "anger and bigotry course through the veins of a bartender who saw it happen and remorse envelopes the driver of the cab." No bigotry, sorry... not allowed. Even elves dancing through the field is offensive. You know why? Because they are dancing and they are elves. Oh, can't show anger either. The children are sensitive.

When you're out of original ideas you lean on "shock value" that's why people embrace teh gay as a plot vehicle. Also, I've noticed that the majority of NaNoWriMos are women. Women like dude-smooching. Fact.

Woman, I haven't gotten in gay. Got in Lesbian, Intersex, geneder neutral and Asexual. If I put in gay, I ain't sexualizing it. I don't have homophilia, just the bad case of equal representation in fiction disease. ^.~ I already have a healthy gay relationship in another novel where the fact they are gay isn't the main focus, and the men aren't made into pseudo girls, but real characters with real problems and issues that's not all about being homosexual. They are also married... I never thought to get off on it, either. Wanted to put in a lesbian couple, but one of the female characters kicked out all of the other female characters... so it didn't happen. TT

I can't express my thoughts about that without swearing, so fill in the following blank space with your favorite swears: Okay, I'm done. My dad died when I was two. I wouldn't say I'm perfectly healthy (I inherited depression from him), but my mom rocks and did an awesome job of raising me. So you know what? Screw you, book banners. Single parents exist. DEAL WITH IT.

Got that, though gay has also been used towards females too, traditionally... so you don't know how many are girls. Unless the language has changed that much under my nose. Since there is no context, you can't be sure, nor the reason for the inclusion. I prefer not to jump to conclusions on people as a group. Just pointing it out.

Fair enough, though he did use the word 'dude.' And I'm female and not straight, for what it's worth, and have no problem with the use of the word gay in that context. I hope I manage to write well-rounded characters too, that's certainly my intention.

Right now I'm actually reading a story in which Satan ends up as one of the 'good' guys and the ending really made me feel bad for him. I almost cried. D= So, the point I'm trying to make is your novel sounds interesting and being about Satan does not necessarily mean the readers can't like him as a character.
