What a strange dream...

I've been having some bizarre dreams lately (some of which I actually remember). So I thought, "What if other people are having dreams that are unusual?" Share your dream with a difference here.

Not that I remember it well, but I think last night, I actually had a dream about writing on the NaNo forums. Weird, huh?

I did have a dream last night where someone stole my dog. My in dream reaction was to immediately take stock of all the materials I have and calculate how much explosives I could make to violently free him. My mother hatched a less explosive plan, which failed due to my lack of shoes. I woke up before I could try my plan.

Re: What a strange dream...

I am SO glad I'm not the only one that has strange dreams! Nor am I the only one that, upon awaking, I reach for a pen and paper thinking, "My, that would make THE GREATEST story!" :D
My latest one has something to do with two little boys visiting their aunt and how they are convinced she's out to ruin their lives - has some possibilities, I'll have to write them down before I forget.

. . . . . . Anyone else able to do strange things or manipulate your own dreams? One of mine is breathing underwater, and it is really funny because for about five seconds I'll be in total panic because I'm drowning, and then somehow in the back of my mind I'll remember I'm dreaming and, "oh yea, it's okay I can breath underwater, no problem!"

Re: What a strange dream...

I can frequently remember I'm dreaming, and occasionally manipulate my own dreams without being aware I'm dreaming at all. I remember one time I was watching a girl do some kind of dance on a tightrope or something. She naturally went off into the air, and I didn't want her to fall, so I solidified the air under her feet so she could keep walking. Usually lately I just realize I'm dreaming and then go about my day like it's normal, though.

I have a question. What's the most terrifyingly basic thing you lose control of in dreams? Lately, whenever I start turning, like around a corner, I just keep turning in a circle and can't stop. It's terrifying.

Hmmm, I don't know, they don't happen very often but sometimes I'll be running away from something and I am SO tired I can't keep my eyes open - it is really frustrating and makes me feel so tired even in my dream! Or I'm trying to run or drive or ride something away really fast and it's going slow as mud!

Which reminds me, I had a hilarious dream quite awhile ago, it was so funny I even realized the humor while I was dreaming it (didn't seem to affect the whole thread of the dream though) I was trying to get a horse to gallop, and this horse was tiny, I mean, my legs were dragging on the ground! Here I am rocking back and forth as if we're going like the wind, and the horse is barely moving, so I stick my feet down and 'help' us along! :P

One of the weirdest dreams that I can remember was from when I was still in a crib. I think i was about 3 or 4, and in my dream I was with a class of some sort. We were walking through this forest or something and then we came across a clearing with a single bench in it. There was a rustling in the bushes, and what pops out other than Big Bird.....with claws and fangs. Everyone ran except for me, and Big Bird chased me around the bench yelling "I'm going to eat you!" for the remainder of the dream.

And that's just one of them.

I see that one person has already posted about a dream where they could write a story from it. I'll post another. Perhaps you've seen it in one of the other forum threads:

Back in high school (before I started writing stories), I had a beautiful foreign-exchange student from Germany in my class. I wasn't in love with her or anything, but I found myself having this dream one night that I was marrying her. Again, I was NOT in love with her, so I could only assume that this was an arranged marriage. I remember telling her, "I'm willing to take this as far as you want it to."

When I woke, I had the starting material for a book. A few years later, just about every important detail from that dream wound up in that book.

One of my favourite dreams was one in which Child Protection Services were going to investigate all NaNo participants because "all of them mistreat an average of four children in their novels". I woke up halfway and thought, "I should write a novel about that," and then I woke up fully and thought, "What?!" ...not really such a good idea for a novel.

There's another one I can't actually remember, I only remember what I wrote down when I woke up: "The jews believe that the one who can defeat Lord Voldemort will be born at Christmas."
... I think I got a few things mixed up there.

Another time I had a dream when I was a persian princess and I had a sword and stuff and suddenly I was running away from someone and I ran into a closet and tried to close and lock the door but it would not lock!!! Then, Lucifer from Broadway's book Working Towards Heaven (the devil) came and raised his eyebrows and di this confusing thing with the door so I was locked in a bigger room. Then he disguised himself as an English Teacher and said he was leaving but would be back and so he brought some of my friedns in to hang out with until he was back. So, then we palyed Just Dance and Glee karoke and soon he got back (which Iwas slightly relived because this creepy baby was one of my friends cousins and it looked like she wanted to eat me) and he poofed everyone. Then he started saying, "I wanted to let you know that I-" then I woke up..... and never found out what he was going to say....

That is so funny! I often have dreams where the rooms I'm in seem to magically alter and, even though I haven't moved, I find myself somewhere else altogether! It freaks me out when I can't get something to work in my dreams, like if I'm trying to hide and I can't get a door open or closed, etc, before whoever is chasing me turns a corner and starts getting closer and closer. (It's funny though, because I still stand there trying to get into wherever it was and hide, as if once I did get the door open they wouldn't know where I went!)

Ever read The Sandman? Dream did just that to someone. It was creepy.

A milder version has happened to me. I "woke up" at least twice in a dream without ever actually waking up. Another time I looked at my clock (I must have been dreaming at the time) and it was later than it was the next time I looked at it (when I was awake).
Re: What a strange dream...

I had a dream once that I went to a theme park with a bunch of kids from my youth group, and one of the most popular attractions was this ball pit. It was inside a building with a huge ceiling and viewing windows, and there was a rope hanging over the ball pit - that was actually the ride. You lined up to take turns swinging over the ball pit like Tarzan. XD Except, when it was my turn, Justin Beiber (of all people!) was standing on the outer windowsill of one of the viewing windows. So when I swung on the rope, I passed him, and he grabbed one of my favorite sneakers off my foot and ripped it up - apparently, it was a stunt to promote his new song, "Shoe". I got REALLY mad, because I loved those sneakers, so the next time I swung past him, I kicked him and he turned into a big ugly walrus. Thus, his name was changed to... Justinbeiberwalrus.
The remainder of the dream was very strange, and events included my best friend falling in love with someone over the phone (ironically, she was supposed to be giving him romantic advice), said best friend turning into a tick, and me wearing a grass skirt and meeting up with some kid who was in my third-grade Sunday school class… 0_o However, between almost every event, I went back to swinging on the Tarzan rope so I could kick Justinbeiberwalrus.
That was one of the weirder ones.
Another was when I was at the mall with my brother and it was really late at night. It was one of the only dreams where I knew I was dreaming, or at least recognized that being at the mall after closing hours was strange. My brother and I had apparently just robbed the claw machine game of all its cheap stuffed animals. I asked him how we got to the mall in the first place and how we were going to get home, but he said he didn't know. Then my dad appeared in a Greek toga and laurel-wreath-thingie, so I asked if he could give us a ride. He replied that he didn't have his car with him, and then disappeared again. Then my six-year-old neighbor appeared in a nightgown, carrying a candle that was shaped like a candy cane, and offered to drive us home.
The other dream where I seemed to recognize I was dreaming was when I was on top of a huge snowy mountain, skiing with my mom. Just as I was looking over the ridiculously high cliff and pondering if anyone had ever fallen off…I fell off. XD I was unusually calm during this part, praying and the like as I fell to my doom. Then I died. And didn't wake up. I just started floating up to heaven. I believe I thought, "You know, I usually wake up by now" - and then woke up before I got to heaven. Needless to say, I was very dissatisfied.

Re: What a strange dream...

Today was the first time in literally years that I took out my dream diary.

My last dream tonight, the one I remember most clearly, was about a New Year's party at my place. There were an awful lot of people (many of whom I didn't even know), and someone remembered there was supposed to be a second toilet off my bedroom. Since I live alone, I didn't need a second toilet, so I had never even opened that door, and covered it with drywall, but now a second toilet would be useful, so someone pulled down the drywall and opened the door. However, while there was place to put the toilet, it had never been put in, and the whole room was unfinished - unpainted walls, concrete floor, lots of dust... but it was a huge room, with wide shelves on the walls and three or four windows. "Wow," I said, "I'll never have to worry about space for my plants again!" (I collect houseplants, so windowsill-space is always appreciated.)
And then I woke up and was very disappointed to remember that there is nothing but a brick wall between the bedroom and the kitchen... no secret rooms...

Before that, there were several other dreams. One about a flood at my old school (and they were breeding wasps there... huh?), but I don't remember much about it.
And one in which I found out that what we thought was imagination was actually a telepathic connection to the minds of other people who are actually going through what we "make up" for our stories. I think I was still dreaming when I declared this an idea for a future novel... it's still sorely lacking in the plot department.

Re: What a strange dream...

I've had two insanely dreams...

One.
I was in China. I had to climb up sky scrapers while fighting monsters made from fireworks. Once I got to the top I had to fight lions, hamsters, snakes and so forth. And once I got to the highest one I had to fight a giant red gecko. Then I woke up.

Two
I was at a friends house having a sleepover until everything turned HP. I was Ginny and everyone was dead except Voldemort and the death eaters. I kept running through some tent. Then I killed all the death eaters. I had to find Voldemort and kill him. Only difficulty was he was a tea table and could not be destroyed until all the legs were broken. Unfortunately his legs could not be broken. Which sucked. Eventually I blew him up.

Re: What a strange dream...

I normally don't remember dreams. The one point in my life that I can remember that I frequently remembered dreams was back in High School. I was playing a major role in our school's production of The Fantasticks. The dreams started maybe a month or so before the show. I had vivid dreams of the other 7 cast members and me performing the show.

The one I remember most clearly was near the end of the rehearsal period, about two and a half weeks maybe before opening night. I dreamed we were doing the second act of the show before we were fully blocked (we were behind schedule in real life and actually weren't fully blocked yet). I remember another character who I was singing a song with and I realized that we didn't know the blocking, and I panicked and didn't move. I told the director about this the next day, who laughed. Luckily we did indeed get the second act blocked in time and it all ended great.

The weird thing was that this was the only time in my life I've ever had dreams that were about the same thing every night. Never before that and never after that did I ever consistently have almost daily dreams about the same thing.

Weird.

Re: What a strange dream...

A couple summers ago, I had a really weird dream.

So, I was (actually) away from home, and I dreamed I was back at home. And there was an approaching army of zombies, and no one could go outside. And somehow, my brother was going to save us from the zombies (actually, they were more like Inferi from Harry Potter). There was this piece of paper that told us how to save ourselves from the zombies, but it had a cross shape cut out of the middle, and we needed to find the piece. And we found it, and then we needed some brass goblet. And I had to go outside to this shed filled with brass junk to find the cup. All this time, the zombies were getting closer and closer. And I ran back inside with the cup, and we looked at the paper. All I remember was that blood was somehow involved, and it reminded me of the movie The Fifth Element somehow. But then we couldn't find the cross piece of paper. And a zombie reached our door and started knocking on it, yelling "Person! Person! Person!" My brother went to open it, and I yelled, "No! Don't open it!" Then the zombie broke down the door and started walking up our stairs. My brother stared at me and asked, "Now what do we do?" I looked at the zombie, looked at him, and suggested, "Turn the power off?" and I woke up.

(In case the "turn the power off" doesn't make any sense, I was referring to our method of, if something doesn't go your way in a video game, turn the power off without saving and start over.)

I've killed people at least once in my dreams. The time I can recall off the top of my head was sort of in self-defense. With an airsoft gun. Which... can't kill people. My dreams are weird.

I'm trying to find an explanation as to why an airsoft gun would be able to kill. Unless you beat the person to death with it or used exploding BBs, I can't come up with anything.

Re: What a strange dream...

There was absolutely no reason it should have killed. It was a totally normal airsoft gun. The BBs were just apparently as powerful as regular bullets. I didn't find this strange until I woke up.

Of course, I had a dream two nights ago that involved living, superpowered Cabbage Patch-type dolls trying to get home to an alternate Earth with really weird country names that I read off a blow-up globe. So suffice to say my dreams get MUCH weirder than airsoft guns being able to kill people.

Re: What a strange dream...

Most of my dreams consist of getting pregnant and losing the baby somehow. A particularly vivid dream of mine ended up with the baby stuck between the couch cushions while the adoptive parents were at the front door for their child. When I told them I lost the baby, they stormed out the front door, saying I had wasted their time. After they were gone, the child was safely in my arms, as if nothing had happened.

Now the most recent dreams somehow involves cats. Not one or two, but hundreds of cats everywhere. I blame Hoarders for the last dream, but I have no business in dreaming about babies.

Re: What a strange dream...

Last night was definitely weird. I was dreaming that I was at my home, taking care of the alpacas (which we have quite a few of), when I saw a cheetah or a leopard. I live in the Pacific Northwest, so what a big cat that wasn't a cougar was doing here, I have no idea. Since it was after one of the alpacas, I went and grabbed a semi-auto .22 rifle to shoot it. I cocked the rifle so I could fire it. I aimed, pulled the trigger, and... nothing. I checked the rifle, and it had turned into a bolt action .270 on me. The best part is that it had a banana clip on it, like it was an assault rifle. Re-cocking the rifle, I noticed that the .270 round was NOT a .270 round. It was more like a cannon round. I aimed at the big cat again, but it too had changed; it was now a black panther.

Everything worked out in the end (none of the alpacas were lost), but I wish my dream would have stayed consistent, and NOT constantly change things on me.

Re: What a strange dream...

I have a lot of stories or novels that I've based on dreams, but a stand out trait from my dreams is my ability to switch genders. The first time this happened, I started the dream as me but got myself sentenced to death. About twenty minutes before my execution I suddenly became the man who was guarding me. Complete P.O.V change - presumably because one is not allowed to die in one's own dreams. Other times, I just 'am' a bloke, and sometimes, I'm not quite sure - the night before last I had a dream where I couldn't work out if I was me dressed as a male vampire, or actually a male, dressed as a vampire, actually a male vampire, or a female vampire cross-dressing. I mean, I looked like me, but... Anyway, I had a fabulous hat and my actions were making no sense (post apocalyptic setting, snow, an all night garage and prawn cocktail crisps - that's the last time I go to bed hungry).

The weirdest dream I've ever had, though, was one where I was part of a hock-medieval, Robin Hood style resistance family (who were my real family, although I wasn't the real me), and I had been captured and forcibly married to the King's sheriff, who was a deformed dwarf. In public we put on a show of reluctant wife and brutal husband, but actually he was a double agent, really loved me, and the whole thing was a marvellously executed plot to ensure the safety of the rebels, my family among them. So far, so manageable.

Only, there was this subplot because we were broke and there was apparently treasure hidden somewhere, and I had to be looking for it at about the time that we were being investigated. Also, there was a vague sense that it was no longer enough that we were rebelling, but we had to unite our family with the royal one somehow (without getting executed) and I had to do that, too, all the while playing the abused wife and not being noticed as I dashed around the castle, looking for treasure. Turns out the key to the whole thing was this ruby necklace that was a family heirloom in my rebel family, and, at the end, a red dragon came out of it, revealed the painfully obvious location of the treasure, but announced that the Pendragon family (apparently my family, although this was the first I'd heard of it) would always call for blood and we would never have done; so the quest for peace was doomed. Apparently, this conclusion was quite satisfactory.

Re: What a strange dream...

Once, I had a dream that my then-bf and his friend had an evil plot to take over the world. He asked me to join them, but I didn't want to be evil and told them I was going to stop them. They responded by tying me to a reclining dentist's chair, strapping me down, and injecting me with something that knocked me out. When I woke up (still in the dream) they had already gone through with their evil plan and become the evil rulers of the world or whatever, so I just wandered around a forest with some talking animal friends for a while until I woke up for real.

Right after the break up, I had another strange dream featuring him as the villain. My roommate and I were "sexy scientists" (the kind you see in scifi channel movies) who were working in a secret lab in my parent's garage trying to find the cure for cancer. We were getting really close, but there was a pack of crazed wolf-men who wanted to stop us for some reason. They were coming to our secret lab, so we closed down the garage door to keep them out. But because those doors are so slow, the leader of the pack made it inside, and he turned out to be my ex. Then I beat him up violently for the remainder of the dream and woke up feeling really really good about myself.

A couple nights ago I dreamed that my cat was a shapeshifter, but the only thing he could turn into (besides a cat) was a spider. So I was trying to overcome my fear of spiders for him. I woke up feeling like I had spiders all over me. Thanks, brain.
