Since no one else is addressing today, I shall. Today is a holiday that we should all be aware of, so...

Happy Saint Valentine's Day Massacre Day. Grab your Tommy gun and your best trilby.

Yeah, I had a friend point that out a few days ago. I responded with the origins of Halloween, to which she said she doesn't celebrate Halloween either. I have a different response when people tell me "Happy Valentine's Day"--I say "Happy chocolate day." There's nothing about romance involved in it. Teachers give students chocolate, my mom sent me an e-card, there's a Midnight Waffle Dinner-thingy going on for those people who don't have dates, I overheard one girl ask another to be her valentine and the other said "Oh, I already have one--but you can be my gay valentine"... I could probably go on. (Pink-iced-red-sprinkled donuts in the campus center. They weren't even that good.) Seriously, how is anything that happens today romantic? I mean, butcher the holiday's original meaning if you want, that's basically all people ever do with history--but could you at least stick with the meaning you came up with?

Eh. Any excuse for chocolate, I suppose.

(I don't celebrate it, either--at its best, it's a terribly unspontaneous over-hyped "romantic" holiday.)

My husband and I exchanged Valentine cards, as we have done for the past twenty years of our relationship. He gave me flowers. As I wasn't well we missed our Valentine's meal out, but had a candlelit meal (soup and rolls) at our kitchen table instead.

We are both in our fifties, just got married last month. Never too old for romance!
