If you're writing a crossover fic, feel free to post in whatever fanfic thread you think it fits in best. :)
Oh that's wonderful!! I'm writing a Dragon Age: Origins fic this year, too! You've no idea how much it tickled me to see this, hehe. Mine is also AU, but focused more on an original character than any of the existing heroes/heroines.
A stab in the dark here, but if you'd like to bounce around any ideas, are stuck anywhere or would just like to talk sometime with a fellow DA:O-er, feel free to send a message my way. :)
Hah! I'm also working on a DA:O fan-fiction, AU with a bunch of OCs and tweaks to timelines. Glad to see some others here. It's a great game for fanfiction, isn't it?!
I started it before NaNo, and I'm using whatever I wrote starting November 2nd towards my word count.
A combo. I'm basing mine on some little comics I drew in class, which had some DBZ characters, Zelda, Metroids (the actual creatures, not the games), etc. along with some original doodles I made.
Awesome to see some Suikoden fans around! I tried writing Suiko II fanfic last year and...well, let's say that the original product probably needs a ton of editing, hahaha. What's your fic gonna be about?
Why yes, I AM writing about that legendary hero destined to be decked out in green. :D
I'm actually using the manga versions of OoT and MM as backstory, since it gives more backstory than the games did. But it's still a video game, so here I am.
I'm not Unoriginality, but I absolutely adore both of those! Of the Himekawa ones, I've read all but OoX, and OoT is easily my favourite. There's just so much in there that it completely reshapes the way you see the game :) (And the fact that they ACTUALLY EXPLAIN what's going on with Sheik is a nice bonus!) MM I'm less familiar with, but I really, really enjoyed it - it's shorter, but it has some fantastic parts. I actually really like the first chapter, showing what Link's been doing since the end of OoT. Man, I want to give that kid a hug.
I played LA and that was easily the most boring game plot wise I've ever played. After dungeon 4 or 5, you can officially ignore everyone in the entire game. I felt more kinship/hatred to the old man in the original that these people. After reading the manga, I was actually pretty sad about it.
As Ryttu3k said, they're absolutely wonderful. They fill in some of the political backstory, give us a glimpse of Link's past before living in the Kokiri Forest, and they definitely show more history for Sheik. I thought Sheik was awesome in the game, he is easily twice as awesome in the manga.
I really love the MM manga, too. It's short, so it takes some shortcuts, but it treats Ogre God Link with total badass awesome. *_* When the Mask Shop man goes to reclaim Majora's Mask after Link defeats it, Link slashes his masks and says "Beat it, you little troublemaker." In one fantrans, it was 'begone, little wretch' which I vastly prefer. But *________________* much *__________* Tatl's kinda "... oh god you're scary D:" at him. It's awesome.
I think I read that translation today. They are awesome. It's a little sad, too, since they focused on the ones that get left behind. In particular, I mean the Gorons and the Zoras. Though, wasn't there a translation that explained the origin of Majora? someone on GameFAQs posted a link to it but apparently I wasn't reading that one.
OoT's explanation of where he came from was close to what I thought. Based on what the Poe Brothers said, I somehow thought he and Zelda were related, which my version of him reflects.
The origins of Majora was the last chapter of the book, but was published in the serials as an early chapter to buy time for the artists to get the rest of the story from the game. It was quite interesting, honestly. I believe TP hints at the true origins of Majora if you take that design of Midna's helmet seriously. Supposedly, TP is timeline sequel to OoT/MM, just several centuries down the line.
I don't remember what the Poe brothers said, because it's been forever since I bothered to fight them, but I seem to recall thinking that Link was related to Zelda somehow- cousins or something- after playing the game, so I must've gotten the same impression you got. But yes, I loved seeing the origins of Link's family, sorta. I like backstory. Backstory is my friend. :D It's what's inspired this year's NaNo, actually.
Yeah, there's evidence both in the manga and in the games for them being related! There's the Poe Brothers. There's Zelda recognising Link's name (which I doubt is from her vision, given that it was so vague that it was just 'a figure from the forest holding a green stone'). There's Impa saying that the lullaby is only taught to members of the Royal Family. There's the fact that Link and Zelda are literally the only blonde-haired blue-eyed Hylians in the game - and that these are recessive genes. There's the fact that they share a unique trait - precognitive dreams.
And in the official English translation, Rauru flat-out says, "Royal Hylian blood flows through your veins, just like Princess Zelda"!
So yeah, that's my theory ;) (And that's why Ocarina is one of the few games where I don't ship Link/Zelda XD)
Okay, so I was right to be grossed out by Link giving her that look! I so thought they were siblings. I mean, we hear about Link's mom but not dad, and we never hear about the Queen of Hyrule. Since Link's mom left before Hyrule got really united (maybe change of families, maybe the Royal Family wasn't established yet, whatever), I figured one parent looked after one and the other looked after the other. Don't leave all your eggs in one basket, you know? Wild guess is his mom, the queen, had visions like Zelda, and went to the Forrest to fulfill prophecy. Or the creepy owl told her.
XD Well, there's nothing CONFIRMED. But there is stuff to justify them being related, yeah. The manga does mention them having seperate parents, but they could be cousins...
I don't know, the manga states that Link's father was a Hylian Knight in service to the king, so I don't think they're siblings. Cousins, probably, which is acceptable for royal families.
But then, even as a little girl, I shipped Luke and Leia, so I doubt being siblings would've stopped me from liking the Link/Zelda pair in OoT. XD
Yeah - they could be siblings just with the game, but with the manga, it's more likely that they're siblings. Which is... dude, Himekawa guys, you don't suggest that Link and Zelda are blood relatives and make it insanely shippy! XD;; (This is a small part of why I prefer Sheik to be a seperate character entirely ;) )
Yeah, the manga totally suggests a more distant relationship, but I'm using the Link I made a few years back in college when I only had the game to go by. Again, I know I could be going on a limb with that, but that's the fun of having some gray areas in a game. It's kinda fun.
Well, remember, they're royalty. Royals tend to intermarry in the family- cousins, half-siblings, etc. So by ancient royal standards, their coupling is still totally valid and fine. It's only squicky to more modern audiences.
I have so many Harvest Moon/Rune Factory ideas. I probably could easily write a 50k HM fic. Heck I already have a fic that's 58 K and only a third done; if I wanted to, I could just put my nose to the grindstone and continue on that (yeah yeah, I know that's against the rules, but...)
You gave me an idea for a side story... I know HM: SI doesn't "have" a story like the RF games do, but sometimes I make up stories about my farmer and whoever they are trying to court. I think I'll have Ruto look for a potion dealer and find the Witch Princess' hut instead, and have Mark explain how they got there.
Well, technically I'm not writing about a legendary hero of old, destined to be decked out in green - I'm writing about the dude in spandex who taught him songs ;) (The Hero in green is definitely in it, though!)
My fic (the second one I'm doing this year - first up is an original story) is a sequel to one of my 2009 ones, which was Ocarina of Time from Sheik's perspective (as a seperate character to Zelda). It ended on a massive downer ending, so this year, I'm going to give the bugger a happy ending.
Been tempted to do a rewriting of Shadow of the Beast for a good long while, lots of opportunities to expand the plot (such as: what the hell actually happened to his sister after SotB2?).
I have a draft I did from preparing for last years NaNo. Tempted. We'll see. The only problem was it went on for ages.
Not ever going to be a NaNo (needs too much research and nit-picking), but my epic Final Fantasy Tactics Decology has been cooking for almost a decade. I've got almost a hundred important, named characters, and half the series is set after the events of the game, culminating with a huge battle that takes up twice as much space as the other nine books, not to mention I've got thousands of years of backstory and a sequel in the works.
Oh, that's fabulous! I've had a Tactics A2-era epic on the backburner for about two years, but I put my planning on indefinite pause after starting to play Vagrant Story.
I know some FFT fans probably frown on TA and TA2 for being shallow, but I think TA2 had a very beautiful, fleshed-out setting.
I think I'm going with my idea for a Persona 4/Tales of the Abyss crossover fic and maybe working on an original story on the side. If nothing else, it should keep November interesting! Good luck everyone.
I'm not 100% sure I'm going to do nano this year, but if I do, I'm rebelling and continuing an old fic I started while writing for a previous nano. It's an AU Final Fantasy XII fic, of epic proportions, a re-imagining of the story under the premise that Rasler survived the battle at Nalbina, and it includes the two years between the prologue and the actual events of the game.
That sounds utterly fabulous! I'm glad to see a good bit of Ivalice love around here. If you go through with it, I would love to give your story a try. The idea of Rasler as anything other than a human pincushion (arrowcushion? crossbow boltcushion?) is intriguing.
Well, I actually started writing in for Nanowrimo '09, but I didn't reach 50K, so I ended up working on it bit by bit in the past two years, and now I'm trying to go for another 50k, because I decided to rebel and not start from scratch this year. I've posted what I've written so far, on FF.net, http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5555246/1/Hope_and_Devotion. Anyway, so far it's been really fun to write, if a little more umm epic/expansive(?) than I originally thought it would be.
I've considered writing fic for that well loved legendary hero, decked out in green. Or at least, a rewrite of a fic of mine that is now stalled, wherein the hero is kidnapped, in the manner of Tam Lin, before he can save Hyrule. Zelda sends an NPC from OoT to save him. Yay for minor characters.
I've also considered writing Super Smash Brothers fanfic, that explores the origins of the Smash Mansion that runs rampant on Fanfiction.net (or did, last time I visited some time back in 2006). But my fanfic - both of the LoZ and SSB persuasion - is so AU that sometimes I don't even know why I bother anymore... xD
Both stories sound pretty interesting :) I think you should go for it! (And yeah, when I pop in to the Smash Bros section on FF.N, Smash Mansion is still alive and well!)
I'm only using a few characters from OoT, but I'm bringing in other characters from elsewhere.
Vaati and hat Ezlo from MC, for example. Might put Linebeck III from ST in it, too (I think I need a store keeper). And I made up some Zora prince from the OoA River Zoras that Ruto was "supposed" to marry.
Been doing research like whoa the past few days to nail down some plot issues. I wrote an FFXI fic for my 2009 NaNo and this is its spiritual successor in the same 'verse--10 years in the future of the game timeline, where the armies of the Middle Lands have been disbanded and conflict is handled entirely through the Conquest System and adventurers. Jeuno was abandoned after the death of Archduke Kam'lanaut 10 years ago, but has been reborn as a "free city" for adventurers by Kam'lanaut's son.
My MC is a male Mithra kept in a kind of harem by the Mithran High Matriarch. He manages to escape/run away and is caught up in a revenge plot revolving around Gunther Schultz ("III"). He teams up with a mage and a thief who's looking to take him back to the Matriarch for a fat reward. I'm hoping to have them tour some of the unplotted areas of Vana'diel such as the Mithran homeland, the Isle of Andouin, and the Orcish Empire in the far north.
The fandom is Legend of Zelda, and the idea has been cooking for five years. In the last draft I got to 33k (barely a sixth done, if that). This Zelda fannovel in particular also has a prequel I need to rewrite, but I can always edit CLC after ES is redone (seeing as I ran out of time what with NaNo sneaking up on me).
Eclipsing Shadows and Crescent Light Chronicles date back to when I first started writing, but since I only finished the prequel originally, I wanted to get as far done as possible with the rewrite. CLC itself includes quite a bit of headcanon - in that includes the fabled center of the Triforce, my understanding of Dark Link's race, extended history and small, minor tweaks, as well as numerous OCs that also hold importance to my central cast.
The setting at the start of the story is Post-Twilight Princess, by two years. But the setting changes throughout the story as well, as CLC-verse meshes bits of canon together and is supplemented with headcanon. ^^
Sorry it took so long to get back to you! I abandoned the forums in favor of writing notes and character bios for my novel. :3 Absolutely we should do the buddy thing. (BTW, love the icon. Sailor Moon was my first anime. :D)
XD, really? Mine too. Imagine that. ^^ (I do still need to finish the last season, but I have seen about 80% of SS, too. Just need to find a site with every sub.)
Hehe, well, it won't be done for a while. It'll be at least ... 210,000 words when it's all said and done. Not completing that in a month, XD. But I'm glad you like the sound of it. ^_^
I'm torn between fanfiction and original fiction at the moment, but if I do fanfiction, it'll probably a Final Fantasy VII fic I've been toying with for awhile. Basically, the main characters are the Turks and it'll be kinda a more serious action/adventure story, that may or may not involve zombies. XD Yup. Zombies. Or at least undead monsters created (possibly) by everyone's favorite evil government masquerading as an electric company. It'll probably mainly focus around Reno, Rude, Cissnei, and Tseng (with Zack Fair thrown into the mix) and Elena and the Before Crisis Turks might make cameos eventually.
If you do end up doing the FFVII fic with zombies, I would -love- to read it! Especially if Cissnei is involved; if there's one thing the FFVII fandom needs more of, it's Cissnei.
Haha, definitely! Cissnei is one of my favorite characters and she definitely needs more love! Still haven't decided if it'll be my NaNo or not, but I really want to write it regardless. :D
Anyone ever play Phantasy Star Online? Somehow completely addicting despite being a little tedious (especially after the first time through)? I'm doing fanfic of it for my first NaNo. One of my favorite things about the game was how much of the backstory was left open to interpretation. They give you some little nuggets in the sidequests, but you're left to form your own opinion of what actually happened for the most part. So I'm taking my interpretation, adding a whole 'nother plotline only barely tangentially related to anything in the game to it, and seeing where that takes me. This tale has been brewing in my head for years, and hopefully I can relaunch it for NaNo and actually finish it for once.

Re: Fanfiction for Video Games
Yay, a fanfiction thread. :D
Re: Fanfiction for Video Games
Yay! One of the other Zelda games gets love! I love Twilight Princess hardcore. I'm doing OoT/MM fic this year, though.
Re: Fanfiction for Video Games
That is awesome. :D
Shall we exchange the buddy thing? I'd love to hear more about your story/read it when it's done. ^^
Re: Fanfiction for Video Games
Sorry it took so long to get back to you! I abandoned the forums in favor of writing notes and character bios for my novel. :3 Absolutely we should do the buddy thing. (BTW, love the icon. Sailor Moon was my first anime. :D)
Re: Fanfiction for Video Games
Hehe, that'd be fantastic.
XD, really? Mine too. Imagine that. ^^
(I do still need to finish the last season, but I have seen about 80% of SS, too. Just need to find a site with every sub.)
Re: Fanfiction for Video Games
Hey, fellow Zelda person! :) I'd love to read yours when you're done - post-TP is a great area to explore!
Re: Fanfiction for Video Games
Hey, Ryttu. ^^
Hehe, well, it won't be done for a while. It'll be at least ... 210,000 words when it's all said and done. Not completing that in a month, XD. But I'm glad you like the sound of it. ^_^
Re: Fanfiction for Video Games
Re: Fanfiction for Video Games
If you do end up doing the FFVII fic with zombies, I would -love- to read it! Especially if Cissnei is involved; if there's one thing the FFVII fandom needs more of, it's Cissnei.
Re: Fanfiction for Video Games
Haha, definitely! Cissnei is one of my favorite characters and she definitely needs more love! Still haven't decided if it'll be my NaNo or not, but I really want to write it regardless. :D
Re: Fanfiction for Video Games
Re: Fanfiction for Video Games
If anybody writes a Metal Gear Solid fan fic, I'd like to read it!
