Fanfiction for Video Games

Writing about a legendary hero of old, destined to be decked out in green? Writing about chocobos and moogles and spikey-haired dudes? Or writing about a certain yellow guy taking a bite out of flashing blue ghosts? All of those and more go here! Feel free to use this thread to talk about all of your video game fic ideas for NaNo.

If you're writing a crossover fic, feel free to post in whatever fanfic thread you think it fits in best. :)

Best of luck on your fics!

I'm actually using the manga versions of OoT and MM as backstory, since it gives more backstory than the games did. But it's still a video game, so here I am.

I have so many Harvest Moon/Rune Factory ideas. I probably could easily write a 50k HM fic. Heck I already have a fic that's 58 K and only a third done; if I wanted to, I could just put my nose to the grindstone and continue on that (yeah yeah, I know that's against the rules, but...)

I'm not Unoriginality, but I absolutely adore both of those! Of the Himekawa ones, I've read all but OoX, and OoT is easily my favourite. There's just so much in there that it completely reshapes the way you see the game :) (And the fact that they ACTUALLY EXPLAIN what's going on with Sheik is a nice bonus!) MM I'm less familiar with, but I really, really enjoyed it - it's shorter, but it has some fantastic parts. I actually really like the first chapter, showing what Link's been doing since the end of OoT. Man, I want to give that kid a hug.

Well, technically I'm not writing about a legendary hero of old, destined to be decked out in green - I'm writing about the dude in spandex who taught him songs ;) (The Hero in green is definitely in it, though!)

My fic (the second one I'm doing this year - first up is an original story) is a sequel to one of my 2009 ones, which was Ocarina of Time from Sheik's perspective (as a seperate character to Zelda). It ended on a massive downer ending, so this year, I'm going to give the bugger a happy ending.

I played LA and that was easily the most boring game plot wise I've ever played. After dungeon 4 or 5, you can officially ignore everyone in the entire game. I felt more kinship/hatred to the old man in the original that these people. After reading the manga, I was actually pretty sad about it.

You gave me an idea for a side story... I know HM: SI doesn't "have" a story like the RF games do, but sometimes I make up stories about my farmer and whoever they are trying to court. I think I'll have Ruto look for a potion dealer and find the Witch Princess' hut instead, and have Mark explain how they got there.

Not ever going to be a NaNo (needs too much research and nit-picking), but my epic Final Fantasy Tactics Decology has been cooking for almost a decade. I've got almost a hundred important, named characters, and half the series is set after the events of the game, culminating with a huge battle that takes up twice as much space as the other nine books, not to mention I've got thousands of years of backstory and a sequel in the works.

Re: Fanfiction for Video Games

As Ryttu3k said, they're absolutely wonderful. They fill in some of the political backstory, give us a glimpse of Link's past before living in the Kokiri Forest, and they definitely show more history for Sheik. I thought Sheik was awesome in the game, he is easily twice as awesome in the manga.

I really love the MM manga, too. It's short, so it takes some shortcuts, but it treats Ogre God Link with total badass awesome. *_* When the Mask Shop man goes to reclaim Majora's Mask after Link defeats it, Link slashes his masks and says "Beat it, you little troublemaker." In one fantrans, it was 'begone, little wretch' which I vastly prefer. But *________________* much *__________* Tatl's kinda "... oh god you're scary D:" at him. It's awesome.

I think I read that translation today. They are awesome. It's a little sad, too, since they focused on the ones that get left behind. In particular, I mean the Gorons and the Zoras. Though, wasn't there a translation that explained the origin of Majora? someone on GameFAQs posted a link to it but apparently I wasn't reading that one.

OoT's explanation of where he came from was close to what I thought. Based on what the Poe Brothers said, I somehow thought he and Zelda were related, which my version of him reflects.

Re: Fanfiction for Video Games

The origins of Majora was the last chapter of the book, but was published in the serials as an early chapter to buy time for the artists to get the rest of the story from the game. It was quite interesting, honestly. I believe TP hints at the true origins of Majora if you take that design of Midna's helmet seriously. Supposedly, TP is timeline sequel to OoT/MM, just several centuries down the line.

I don't remember what the Poe brothers said, because it's been forever since I bothered to fight them, but I seem to recall thinking that Link was related to Zelda somehow- cousins or something- after playing the game, so I must've gotten the same impression you got. But yes, I loved seeing the origins of Link's family, sorta. I like backstory. Backstory is my friend. :D It's what's inspired this year's NaNo, actually.

I'm not 100% sure I'm going to do nano this year, but if I do, I'm rebelling and continuing an old fic I started while writing for a previous nano. It's an AU Final Fantasy XII fic, of epic proportions, a re-imagining of the story under the premise that Rasler survived the battle at Nalbina, and it includes the two years between the prologue and the actual events of the game.

I've considered writing fic for that well loved legendary hero, decked out in green. Or at least, a rewrite of a fic of mine that is now stalled, wherein the hero is kidnapped, in the manner of Tam Lin, before he can save Hyrule. Zelda sends an NPC from OoT to save him. Yay for minor characters.

I've also considered writing Super Smash Brothers fanfic, that explores the origins of the Smash Mansion that runs rampant on Fanfiction.net (or did, last time I visited some time back in 2006). But my fanfic - both of the LoZ and SSB persuasion - is so AU that sometimes I don't even know why I bother anymore... xD

Re: Fanfiction for Video Games

Yeah, there's evidence both in the manga and in the games for them being related! There's the Poe Brothers. There's Zelda recognising Link's name (which I doubt is from her vision, given that it was so vague that it was just 'a figure from the forest holding a green stone'). There's Impa saying that the lullaby is only taught to members of the Royal Family. There's the fact that Link and Zelda are literally the only blonde-haired blue-eyed Hylians in the game - and that these are recessive genes. There's the fact that they share a unique trait - precognitive dreams.

And in the official English translation, Rauru flat-out says, "Royal Hylian blood flows through your veins, just like Princess Zelda"!

So yeah, that's my theory ;) (And that's why Ocarina is one of the few games where I don't ship Link/Zelda XD)

Final Fantasy XI here, with implied crossover.

Been doing research like whoa the past few days to nail down some plot issues. I wrote an FFXI fic for my 2009 NaNo and this is its spiritual successor in the same 'verse--10 years in the future of the game timeline, where the armies of the Middle Lands have been disbanded and conflict is handled entirely through the Conquest System and adventurers. Jeuno was abandoned after the death of Archduke Kam'lanaut 10 years ago, but has been reborn as a "free city" for adventurers by Kam'lanaut's son.

My MC is a male Mithra kept in a kind of harem by the Mithran High Matriarch. He manages to escape/run away and is caught up in a revenge plot revolving around Gunther Schultz ("III"). He teams up with a mage and a thief who's looking to take him back to the Matriarch for a fat reward. I'm hoping to have them tour some of the unplotted areas of Vana'diel such as the Mithran homeland, the Isle of Andouin, and the Orcish Empire in the far north.

Okay, so I was right to be grossed out by Link giving her that look! I so thought they were siblings. I mean, we hear about Link's mom but not dad, and we never hear about the Queen of Hyrule. Since Link's mom left before Hyrule got really united (maybe change of families, maybe the Royal Family wasn't established yet, whatever), I figured one parent looked after one and the other looked after the other. Don't leave all your eggs in one basket, you know? Wild guess is his mom, the queen, had visions like Zelda, and went to the Forrest to fulfill prophecy. Or the creepy owl told her.

Re: Fanfiction for Video Games

Yay, a fanfiction thread. :D

The fandom is Legend of Zelda, and the idea has been cooking for five years. In the last draft I got to 33k (barely a sixth done, if that). This Zelda fannovel in particular also has a prequel I need to rewrite, but I can always edit CLC after ES is redone (seeing as I ran out of time what with NaNo sneaking up on me).

Eclipsing Shadows and Crescent Light Chronicles date back to when I first started writing, but since I only finished the prequel originally, I wanted to get as far done as possible with the rewrite. CLC itself includes quite a bit of headcanon - in that includes the fabled center of the Triforce, my understanding of Dark Link's race, extended history and small, minor tweaks, as well as numerous OCs that also hold importance to my central cast.

The setting at the start of the story is Post-Twilight Princess, by two years. But the setting changes throughout the story as well, as CLC-verse meshes bits of canon together and is supplemented with headcanon. ^^

I don't know, the manga states that Link's father was a Hylian Knight in service to the king, so I don't think they're siblings. Cousins, probably, which is acceptable for royal families.

But then, even as a little girl, I shipped Luke and Leia, so I doubt being siblings would've stopped me from liking the Link/Zelda pair in OoT. XD

I'm torn between fanfiction and original fiction at the moment, but if I do fanfiction, it'll probably a Final Fantasy VII fic I've been toying with for awhile. Basically, the main characters are the Turks and it'll be kinda a more serious action/adventure story, that may or may not involve zombies. XD Yup. Zombies. Or at least undead monsters created (possibly) by everyone's favorite evil government masquerading as an electric company. It'll probably mainly focus around Reno, Rude, Cissnei, and Tseng (with Zack Fair thrown into the mix) and Elena and the Before Crisis Turks might make cameos eventually.

I'm only using a few characters from OoT, but I'm bringing in other characters from elsewhere.

Vaati and hat Ezlo from MC, for example. Might put Linebeck III from ST in it, too (I think I need a store keeper). And I made up some Zora prince from the OoA River Zoras that Ruto was "supposed" to marry.

Yeah - they could be siblings just with the game, but with the manga, it's more likely that they're siblings.
Anyone ever play Phantasy Star Online? Somehow completely addicting despite being a little tedious (especially after the first time through)? I'm doing fanfic of it for my first NaNo. One of my favorite things about the game was how much of the backstory was left open to interpretation. They give you some little nuggets in the sidequests, but you're left to form your own opinion of what actually happened for the most part. So I'm taking my interpretation, adding a whole 'nother plotline only barely tangentially related to anything in the game to it, and seeing where that takes me. This tale has been brewing in my head for years, and hopefully I can relaunch it for NaNo and actually finish it for once.

There is a serious dearth of cannibal demon lesbian based fic out there, and while the stuff that is present is very, VERY good...There needs to be more of it! Much more!

My fic is mainly a crossover between Dead Rising and Resident Evil. I'm trying very, very hard to get some Heavy Rain characters in there too (because I love Norman, and Madison is really fun to write). I'm a little strange in the fact that I want to try to mash up as many video games together into one story as possible. =D Therefore, it's definitely not in any way keeping to any type of canon, but who's really keeping tabs on this kind of thing?

That being said, if anyone DOES end up writing Heavy Rain fanfic, I would love to read it. Just sayin'.

I have! First played Dreamfall and I absolutely loved it, then I've gotten my hands on TLJ but gave up halfway because the puzzles are just so damn hard! I might give it another shot someday. Still, great series and I'm still waiting for the next game. Plus, April Ryan has got to be one of the best written heroine in video game history- just putting that out there. :D

I absolutely adore April, although her personality is so different in Dreamfall! D: And then Dreamfall's CLIFFHANGERS, augh! I like TLJ better mostly because (A) I suck at combat in games like that and (B) the dialogue is soooo well-written for everyone. But yes ... I wanna write a fanfic. Maybe of April and the decisions I WISH she made in Dreamfall XD

I may be writing a psychological Pokémon fanfic I've been wanting to write for over a decade. I'm still debating, though! I've wanted to write this forever and my original ideas are all pretty vague. My first four NaNoWriMo experiences I did original fanfiction, but I've always considered writing this instead.

Do you guys find it embarrassing to admit that you're writing fanfiction for NaNo? I have nothing against fanfiction, it's what got me seriously into writing in the first place, but I do feel like saying I'm writing a Pokémon fanfic kind of delegitimizes me as a writer. Even though this fanfic happens to be very serious and actually pretty messed-up.

Ahhh, I have less than nine hours to decide! Time to whip out the old sketchbook and start mapping out my various ideas and seeing what I think.

I'm leaning towards this fanfic, though, just because I already love it and I've wanted to get it out for so long.

It did at first. I mean, we're writers, right? Why aren't we making our own?

Then I looked at the WoW book in the library >_>

Besides, that little comic I did helped me make a world. My prof saw a piece of dialogue between two characters and encouraged me to study comics and graph novels. Haven't made much headway yet, but I got far in a Sci fi world because of it.

Dreamfall was still amazing, but in many ways, weaker. Still love it though.

It's a very rich setting, I bet you'll have lots of fun wiritng a fanfic about it. It gives you the chance to work both science fiction AND fantasy, what else can be richer than that? =D

Well, I actually started writing in for Nanowrimo '09, but I didn't reach 50K, so I ended up working on it bit by bit in the past two years, and now I'm trying to go for another 50k, because I decided to rebel and not start from scratch this year. I've posted what I've written so far, on FF.net, http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5555246/1/Hope_and_Devotion. Anyway, so far it's been really fun to write, if a little more umm epic/expansive(?) than I originally thought it would be.

I'm writing a KH fic! Well, a crossover, but it's a KH crossover, with Hikaru no Go. It's post-KH2 because I wanted to have Sora and Riku kicking Heartless butt together, haha. Other KH characters may or may not appear, I haven't plotted enough of it out to know at this point. (I actually haven't plotted it out at all, lol.)

Take the Kaleido Stars and drop them (and me!) into Final Fantasy X for our own pilgrimage.

Hello, hello, everyone!
I'm writing a Mass Effect fanfic. It's set thirty years after the end of ME3, though, so I'm probably going to have to redo large swathes of it after that game comes out. >.>
The short of it is, Garrus is now old and the best retirement plan he can come up with is to reboot his vigilante squad. The main hero is Temmen, a human on his team. Hijinks and galaxy-threatening villains ensue.

Oh that's wonderful!! I'm writing a Dragon Age: Origins fic this year, too! You've no idea how much it tickled me to see this, hehe. Mine is also AU, but focused more on an original character than any of the existing heroes/heroines.

A stab in the dark here, but if you'd like to bounce around any ideas, are stuck anywhere or would just like to talk sometime with a fellow DA:O-er, feel free to send a message my way. :)
I didn't know this existed. I thought I was just bending the rules and hoping no one would notice. Now, I feel better. :3 I'm writing a Phoenix Wright fanfic, original story concept but the main characters are all the same., I have some original characters (including suspects, witnesses, victim, etc) to keep the story moving. I'm trying to write it in the style of the games, so there is an investigation period and a trial period for every day with three days total.
HOMG, I AM DOING THE SAME THING. *fistbump* Mine is an AU that assumes the bad ending from the second game is canon, and I'm structuring it like a game. My "tutorial trial" bit is almost done, but I think Phoenix's reason for going back to law is weak. Oh well.

That sounds amazing. My story is only going to be one trial, I think. Miles is being coerced into being the standing defense attorney, because Phoenix has himself in trouble. The story I am going for takes place after the Ace Attorney Investigations game. I'm not taking anything from the Apollo Justice game into consideration, because I haven't actually played it. ^^;;

I think my novel is crossing the line from king Arthurs timeline into hyrule somehow... The only one of my heroes left alive carries arround every weapon imaginable and that includes a fancy sword, wears a green tunic and somehow managed blonde hair with extreme fight skills...oh and he doesn't have a name yet. My siblings say just call him link. Should I? I almost don't wanna since I kill all the people with names(it's a bad habit) but I am tired of calling him "the green dude" "green clad warrior" etc...

Ooh! Me! Amnesia: The Dark Descent.

It's my first attempt ever with fan fiction, and I'm so afraid of breaking characters that don't belong to me (although I suppose that would be the point). I just didn't have time this year to hatch my own setting/characters, so forcing a premade character through various plot hurdles seemed easiest. Of course, it isn't easy at all. It's actually harder trying to get into the head of a character I didn't invent, but I'm committed to it now.

Guess I should check more than the regional forums during NaNo -.-

I decided to stick with a tried and true fandom. I could have posted this under anime but since I'm going based off of the games and not the anime, it fits better here.

Rockman (Megaman) Classic Series.

I don't know how familiar people are with that, at least those who NaNo. Not sure if anyone's familiar with a place on LJ (a site I haven't been to in, what 3 years now?) called 20inkspots (not even sure if it exists still or not.) I decided to finally tackle their Heavy Themes, but make each theme NaNo sized. So far it's worked. I can't count the first prompt since I FINISHED it on Nov. 1. I'm only counting from the second prompt onward. Things are looking good I can get at least the second and third prompt and maybe start the fourth before November ends.

With luck, that is.

Re: Fanfiction for Video Games

Hey! I'm writing a story that's VERY loosely based off Dragon Age (DA) and when I say loosely, I mean the only thing that's the same are "Templars" and "Mages," though the Templars I use are more historically accurate whereas the Mages are more of my own creation. The land is completely different, along with the geography and the entire plot compared to the game.

Pretty sure it's not much of a fanfic, which isn't really what I want, so I thought I'd come and ask people who DO know what they're talking about xD I just want to make sure that *if* I ever want to do anything in particular with this other than NaNo, would it be counted as a fanfic? I used the word apostate once, which is constantly used in the game. I don't want to use it often (for obvious reasons) but I just wanted some general advice!

Please and Thank You :3

Writing a Kingdom Hearts one, too. Yay for more KH fanfics! :D Much luck to you on our story!

Mine's really bizarre, though, and I'm probably going to be shunned for it... It's post-KH2 and it's a rather apocalyptic fic. There's no canon characters for the most part (the main villain kind of... got rid of Sora and the others already :C) and it's really dark. My characters are going to worlds based on Haunted Mansion, Tomorrowland, Tron Legacy, maybe Wall-E... /geek But that part's interesting and it's really fun so far.

Oooh, your excerpt is really nifty :) I'd love to have a read once you're done!

Mine's going to be less... uh, epic, it's more character-driven - it's actually a sequel to one of my 2009 ones (Ocarina from seperate!Sheik's POV).

Soul Mates, yes I have read that. Very proud to have read that, it's so long, like a badge of honor. I get updated on it's sequel Soul Remnants and keep up with that too.

By rough calculations, my story will ultimately be 3 parts, each at least at 100k. So, mine will be ranking up there with some of the epic length stories. Should I hang in and finish it all that is.

I'm not a lawyer or an expert on copyright, but it sounds like what you're doing is being generally inspired by an idea and taking your own spin on it rather than writing fanfic. If you're not using any proper names from Thedas (characters, geography, etc) or any of the history for the setting, it doesn't sound like fanfic to me. Depending on how heavily inspired your idea is, it may feel slightly derivative, but that's by no means an impediment to publication if it's a well-told story.

And this is coming from someone who definitely IS writing DA fanfic for NaNo :)

It's going to be about a girl who appeared in Jak and Daxter's life at around the age of 6 or 7, and grew up with them alongside Keira. She goes along on their quests and such, and evolves into her own person (rather than another sidekick) when they travel through the rift in time. She doesn't know her past before appearing in Sandover village, but eventually she learns the isis one of the last remaining members of a kingdom that fell the day she was transported to Sandover. I'm still working out the details. (: What do you think?

And I agree completely about it being one of the best PS2 games xD It's my absolute favorite game series. Except for The Lost Frontier.

And yeah, I've never written Link like this before - a Link that's gone back to the past, then grown up naturally. I RP him at Luceti and he's from just before being sent back, so it's a very different mentality, and it's actually slightly darker than Ihad, um, expected.

Re: Fanfiction for Video Games

My 2010 Nano was Pokemon-themed. POV from the Mons themselves; there were only two humans in the entire setting, both antagonists. Battles ranged from formal duels of skill to life and death, sometimes bloody. For example:

Anyone who is familiar with Pokemon can verify the details that follow -- all moves mentioned are perfectly legal for the Pokemon using them.

- My MC is a young Treecko named Arlex. Early in the novel he duels a young Nincada.
- A few chapters later he's joined by a young Shinx, and a Vaporeon gives them a Lotad to assist in a three-versus-one battle. Sure, all three of them have type advantages against Water, but this Vaporeon's (presumably) very high-level.
- When one of the antagonists shows, he sends out a Mightyena (knowing Fire Fang) against my MC. Then the MC's father, a Charizard, swoops in to save them and incinerates the opponent with Blast Burn. But the antagonist captured the MC's mother (a high-level Sceptile) and sics her against the father. He refuses to fight his own mate, and pays a good price for it, taking several Dragon Claws and one Hyper Beam.
- Another antagonist is known to have a Dragonair, Swellow, Gyarados, and Jolteon with him. The first antagonist nailed his Gyarados in a single blast of Thunder, but later he pairs it with his Jolteon's Volt Absorb to make a nasty combo.
- In a later chapter, group of characters take on a Kabutops. An allied Absol takes a critical wound from an X-Scissor, Flareon gets doused, but the Charizard (MC's dad) manages to do shatter one of the opponent's scythes with Metal Claws.
- In a side battle later, Mother engages the Kabutops (who still hasn't recovered his broken scythe) and eventually disintegrates him outright with Solarbeam.
- Much later, my MC (by now a Grovyle) is tasked with taking down a high-level Onix who was also captured by the antagonist. He is able to chop through Onix's armor fairly easy with his Leaf Blade, but gets trapped in a Bind and every last breath squeezed out of him -- only some Mega Drains kept him alive. In the end, Onix goes down, his rock armor shattered, and chooses to take himself out in an Explosion. The only reason anyone survived that was because an allied Smeargle saw it coming and was able to ready a Wide Guard.
- After that, my MC and a Luxray chase after the antagonist in an underground tunnel and are forced to take on the MC's mother and a Crobat. Luxray knows he can take down the bat, but MC having to fight his own mother? She starts out with Leaf Blade, he's able to dodge and counter it, manages to sever her leaves off one arm. Then she switches to a combo of Dragon Claw and Dragon Pulse. MC manages to get some critical hits against the energy pods on her back with Aerial Ace, but he's taken a fair share of injuries too. In the end, she nails him with a Hyper Beam, but he Endures the hit and (barely) survives, though all of his leaves are burned clean off. Mother, though ... not so good. Her accumulated injuries (and the stress of using one too many Hyper Beams) leave her unable to fight, and she pleads for the MC to cut off her last energy pod and let her die. He reluctantly does (it gives him enough energy to heal him, and also start evolving to a Sceptile himself) but . . . it's pretty sad that he had to kill his own mother.

Yes, you can tell which one was the climactic final battle for my 2010 Nano.

Now I am considering making a Nano adaptation from my experience playing Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, MC being a Riolu and his partner a Shinx (my actual team in the game), but . . . that's another year.
