I am, and dang is it hard! I've always felt this is an underrepresented genre, and I'm starting to see why perhaps more writers haven't explored it. When creating characters, it's difficult to find a good balance between an animal's natural personality and the requisite human element. I suppose you have to find the balance that works for you, but there are so many possibilities! Has anyone else struggled with this?

You could have a human suddenly transformed into an animal or their soul could inhabit an animal, and their morality would be trapped within the animal, causing the conflict between a highly moral human and the bloodlust of a wild animal. It could possibly get very philosophical.

I might be turning one of my RPG campaign/story worlds into a novel and it may include anthro/humanoids. Either furry or reptilian, though could be both. It would be somewhat medieval with a magic and/or mech space-travel theme.

It's possible I may do a set of stories w different characters all inter-connected to the 'main' story. I think if I do it this way I'm sure it'd be an easy way to introduce a new campaign world and NPCs for aspiring players.

Also not writing Furry per se but one of my main character is an anthropomorphic* Lion-oid.

* Classical anthro so all the human traits are mental.

Though there is a Jackal-man in my story, he's more of a mysterious side character.

Though I haven't made up my mind quite yet, I'll probably go with anthropomorphism. I think I might want to do something with birds or rewrite my first NaNo, which was an animal story.

Then there's always Redwall fanfiction that I might do. ^^

Mine will, it's a Fanfiction, but the OC's are Genetically Engineered Shapeshifters bred and born to fight in a war that's spanned 10,000 years. (Stargate Atlantis) The main character is a wolf, but there are multiple distinct clans, Bear, Wolf, Deer, Horse, Etc. They can interbreed, but one genetic legacy will be dominant and there will never be a half-Wolf/half-Bear. You might get a VERY large wolf, but it would only be a wolf or bear. Nor is it possible to have a Wolf out of a pairing that has Wolf grandparents but aren't Wolves themselves....if that makes sense.

I have a race of people that possess SOME of the physical qualities of animals, while retaining a completely human mentality. Some people are more animal-like than others and whatnot.

It's a source of deep cynicism and tragedy for my novel, also. What happens when a child is born with gills? It's a very imbalanced system. (Magical mutations are FUN.)

hooray for Redwall! Woo hoo!
no i'm not writing a redwall fanfic but the plot for my story did come from a Redwall RPG and features weasels, ferrets, and otters. actually i'm the head script writer for a budding animation company and i'm trying to turn a vague RP plot into a full story that will eventually be animated. if i didn't really need to churn the words out for that i might have been writing a prequel to the steampunk novel i did for NaNo last year. it's nice to be back to the furries though. when a friend of mine was reading my novel from last year she said she kept picturing the human characters as hamsters or something because i guess that's what i'm good at. i did have a hard time last year not writing paws instead of hands in several scenes.
ah yes back to the furries for me and as much description as i can cram into it so i can explain what it's supposed to look like to a bunch of storyboarders when i get done.

Why didn't I think of that? I was gonna do a story in honor of Redwall, but didn't. Oh well. I guess I can always fix up the first "series" I wrote one day.

Not huge into this, so I dunno: Would werebeasts fall into this? In a Sci Fi world I'm working on, I opted to cut to the chase and say that all the werebeasts world over finally fought back and won. After several hundred years I'm thinking that they can't be your average werebeasts anymore. They're the dominant species, so I'm thinking they are a lot more open and okay with their animal nature. Very few attempt to repress it, but those are mostly their young.

My story actually has cats (who would be villains in The Red Wall verse) as main characters, but they aren't bad guys persay, just moderate to bad-people/furry/anthro things. But there are also deer and other animals, and they along fairly well, it's more xenophobia then anything else.... still bad but they at least don't want to eat one another.

My novel is about a pigeon who set out on a quest and becomes friend with a mouse and a cat along the way. (It's not as childish as it sounds. Think wars between the different animal races, bloody battles and fur flying.) It does features some humans, but they're only in the background. I'm a bit worried about writing from the point of view of a pigeon, not the easiest thing in the world.

Re: Anthro/furry novels

I am writing a pretty straightforward story about one of my favorite animals: he misunderstood hyena. These creature are very intelligent, beating the chimpanzee in some tests. They are also highly social, with packs of 50 or more members with sophisticated ways to communicate. I also find it interesting how they are matriarchal. The dominant females take on many masculine aspects to lead the group (cackle).
I was inspired to make this novel after finding out how misunderstood these creatures are. When I went to a screening of hte Liion King 3D, a little girls started yelling 'those bad, bad hyenas. They killed Mufasa. I hate hyenas!' Although this is a great movie, that in some places is very accurate, its protrayal of hyenas is very wrong. And that's what i'm trying to fix with my story.

Hi,

@Shaedra - I felt the same way. I keep reminding myself to let go of the idea that I'll get it perfect. Another thing that helped was that I began where I *wanted* instead of where I *thought* I should start - does that make sense?

You bet you've heard all of this but I thought it was worth saying....

Your book sounds FANTASTIC! You've totally got to start writing that.

If I may offer something up: start with a fight. You've got a bunch of big cats and a bunch of wonderful conflict.

Another thought: think about where you wanted to begin the story and start in the middle instead.

Good luck!

Mine is pretty awesome so far. I did decide to start in the middle, with my main character just literally falling out of the sky. I'm kinda coinfused about the georaphy , so I guess my story won't be that accurate, but I'll just fix it later.

I'm also glad I found this. My idea about cats joining spaceship crews might not be so dumb, after all. Not anthropomorphized, just regular cats exploring the solar system, like their predecessors did on sailing ships.

I'm writing a story using Iberian wolves. Spain has such a beautiful habitat, I couldn't resist. This is a lot harder to write than anything else I've tried before, because the situations animals are in are so much different. You can't, like, make them take a trip to the supermarket or something- you have to take little parts of nature and express how they are such a big deal the animal, without overhumanizing them!

I agree! Especially with the language. You can't give them normal human slang, so sometimes it can end up too formal.

Re: Anthro/furry novels

Not this year but the first time I did NaNoWriMo I did a detective novel in which a non-furry detective has to try and find a missing member of the Dublin furry community (that is, people who dress up as furries). For the purposes of the novel there is a huge community of Irish furries whose existence is largely unknown to the rest of society.

I was making it up as I went along but I am still fond of it. If I was not incredibly lazy I would go back and try to edit it into something with proper characters, a functioning plot, etc.

Ohh, you guys reminded me of a story I was writing some years ago and totally forgot about xD And now it's all coming back to me: a world ruled by cat shapeshifters, where humans are used as slaves. Sure it's not very original, but now that I'm remembering bits and pieces of some scenes I wrote, I'm interested in tackling it again...

God I wish I had kept my past writings x.x Stupid me.

Re: Anthro/furry novels

Me? Hmm. I have some concepts for fantasy races that resemble beast-folk, but with pride taken in the non-human qualities. The dragon-people look a lot like wyverns (and on that note, there are a few unsavory myths about how their species came to exist in the first place); the bird-people look a lot like ordinary birds of prey (just larger, with longer legs and handclaws on the wings); and so on.

My 2010 Nano utilized a Pokemon-based setting, but while some Mon species are undoubtably bipedal, Pokemon at large isn't an anthropomorphic setting.

My 2008 Nano involved a summer camp with an ancient Indian curse/something on the surrounding forest that if you got lost at night you got turned into an animal, possibly permanently. Much of the plot revolved around my MC getting turned into a red fox and having to learn to live like an animal for about two weeks. He wasn't alone, though -- the camp rangers are in on the secret (two of them have wolves as their animal form, one a mountain lion), and one of the rangers helped protect and teach the MC about animal life during that time. It did have one or two hilarious moments regarding 'marking' -- for example, at one point the ranger (as a wolf) marked some ground in front of the MC (as a fox), and my MC freaks out with a "you just ... PEED right in front of me!?" Or another time when the MC needs to "use the bathroom". The ranger doesn't just tell him to pick a spot "and go" (which my MC reluctantly does), he also walks over to sniff the scent of it (much to MC's embarrassment). And then to top the whole thing off, he instructs my MC to sniff it too because my MC needs to be able to identify his own marks.

Now my 2007 and 2011 Nanos involve an exclusively animal-based setting -- "four legs good, two legs bad" if you will, because there are absolutely no bipedal species (birds aside) in the setting. No humans, no primates, everything walks on four legs.
