Fanfiction writers, is there ever that one character that won't let you in their head?

You guys must know what I'm talking about right?? That one stubborn character (or maybe there's a few of them) that won't let you get into their head. That one character whose personality didn't quite jump out at you when you read/played/watched their story unfold in front of you. Maybe I'm just not very good at keeping characters In Character but I find most characters' personalities are pretty easy to figure out.

Then there's those that aren't. I find Cloud from Final Fantasy 7 to be a tricky character to figure out. Since his personality was pretty much not his own in FF7. And I haven't actually played Crisis Core to see his real personality shine. But still, Zack's character stands out and I feel like I have a grasp on his personality, even without playing Crisis Core. Roxas from Kingdom Hearts is tricky as well.

So guys, who are those tricky characters for you? Those characters that you just can't seem to totally figure out. And what are you doing about it if you are using them in your story?

I don't think I've seen this thread before but sorry if something similiar is already made. And if you want to be writing buddies I'd be more than happy to agree :) I need some buddies.

Yeah in a Supernatural fic I was working on before Nano started it was Castiel. Thing is sometimes I totally get how and what Cass would do, then three scenes later, he refuses to talk to me and is standing in a corner having a temper tantrum.

I'm doing a Pirates of the Caribbean fic for nano and Jack is the hardest character. For all his assumed stupidity he's really very deep and very complex under that mask. He's proving to be interesting to write because I have to really think about WHY he's doing what he's doing far, far in advance.

Yeah, his character seems like a very hard one to write. With the way that some of his behavior is all an act, you know? He is a pirate after all, a master of disguise and cunning. Your story sounds interesting :) I just read the synopsis on it.

Re: Fanfiction writers, is there ever that one character that won't let you in their head?

For my fanfic series, I think the character I struggle most with is Tobias. (An animorphs fanfic, that might be before some of your guys' time, haha.) The rest of the characters have really distinct personalities an morality systems, yet it seems like he constantly waffles back and forth in the moralities on all the stories.

I think also what's hard is throughout the entire novel the way he acts and the way he feels seems to be at odds a lot. The way he acts seems to be straightforward and simple, but how he actually feels when he has internal dialogue during his books he is probably the most complex character of the series. No matter what I write about him, unless it's just simple interaction between him and Ax, I'm constantly questioning myself "would he say that or do that?"

And I totally butchered that last paragraph. The one sentence should be: The way he acts seems very straightforward and simple when you look at him from the outside lens, though I could never really tell which way he was going to go on issues. Yet when I read his books it seems like his character is by far the most complex character of the series.

I'm writing a Yu Yu Hakusho/X-Men Evolution fanfic on the side, and Genkai from YYH and Wolverine both hate me. Everyone else I'm good with, but those two just don't like talking to me. Instead, they like to stand around and glare. But so does Hiei, but that's practically his character description, so that's not too bad.

Yusuke, Kitty, Xavier, and Kurama are all surprisingly easy to write. Along with Pietro. I can actually hear them saying their lines, so that makes me feel I've done a good job. Now why can't everyone else do the same??

Re: Fanfiction writers, is there ever that one character that won't let you in their head?

24 - Andre Drazen. I tried to write a story that was basically "the history of the Drazen family" because their storyline was so deep and yet relatively untouched, but I stopped when I realized that Andre - who was the principle character - was eluding me. Sometimes I could figure out what he would do, but other times I sat there wondering. Because sure, he's a bad guy but he just cares about his family underneath, so I don't know if there would be some situations he'd put his family first.

And I'm also running into walls regarding Finch, in Person of Interest (my WriMo story). Michael Emerson is just so...Michael Emerson, and Finch is so quiet and paranoid and a little bit sarcastic (but not too much) that I'm rewriting like half of his lines as I go along. It probably doesn't help that I've been watching the show week by week and 6 episodes hasn't been enough to ingrain his personality (I think I have his manner of speech now though, which is a relief)

Re: Fanfiction writers, is there ever that one character that won't let you in their head?

I write a Naruto fanfic on ff.net that I'm continuing along side my nanowrimo. I think the hardest character has been Sasuke, because there is so little to his personality except revenge. And it's really hard to write him in a creative, different way than he's alwyas been shown in fanfic. You know, emo, angry, revengeful and the only dialogue is "Hn."

Sai, is also tremendously hard, but for a different reason. His personality in the manga is nothing like a RL personality would be. He's kind of like a robot who is relearning human emotions and interactions. Though it's kind of comedic for the manga, it's just not realistic to write about. So I've had to change him from being robotic, to using some deadpan humor to hide is discomfort with personal situations and interactions.

Good thread topic too, btw!

My other project (the one I'm doing Nano as a break from) is a Higurashi fic set 20 years after the series, and that comes with its own set of problems. At least I've been able to start with the younger generation, and re-introduce the original characters gradually, so I can spend some time thinking about each one when they first appear. For each one, I have to take their canon personality and think about how it will have changed, both because they're older and because I've outlined the intervening events.

The chapter I'm on at the moment reintroduces Satoko, and she is definitely the hardest of all. She's the youngest (except for Rika, but then, Rika is really an adult in a child's body) and it's massively hard to go from that to writing her as an adult and making sure it sounds like the same character. That's one reason for taking a good long break before having to go back and revise that chapter :)

I meant disguise as like ... he can get what he wants using his words. From the movies, he's pretty good at getting what he wants, I haven't seen the movies in forever but in the last movie that came out he's good at disguising his motives or can swindle others and get when he wants. I may have worded that wrong. But the way he is towards Penelope Cruz's character, from the first hour that I watched, he seemed to act that way towards her character and kind of charm her. I should have just said he's a charmer or smooth talker sometimes. But he does disguise himself in the beginning of that movie as a judge if I'm not mistaken.

Thanks, it stemmed from the fact that the character I'm writing about now is really giving me a hard time. I've been youtube-ing scenes with him just to get a feel for him.
I'll bring up Ouran High School Host Club, because that's what I'm writing now. There's probably others, but what have you. :D

I cannot write Tamaki Suoh to save my life.

I once, in a spectacular fail prior to my NaNo, decided I'd make a fic alternating between the Host Club members' POVs. I struggled through one scene in Tamaki's head ... and have stuck solely with the twins ever since.

I think he (and some of the other characters) are just so exaggeratedly out there by nature that I can't grasp their mindset when I'm trying to write something semi-serious. With Tamaki, his frivolity and tendency to ramble completely overturn the purpose of a scene unless I keep him in check. ...and then, he becomes too serious to sound like Tamaki in the first place. :D

My solution is to get my sister - who writes random humor all the time - to read over any scene with Tamaki and judge his characterization for me. If she thinks he's plausible, it's good enough for me!

Artemis Entreri. Because, argh, from a psychological point of view I can understand why he does what he does, but I have a hard time figuring out what makes him tick (there's a difference, trust me!). Writing his dialogue is hard, too, because I recognise it instantly when I read it but I just can't copy it no matter what I do. It's very frustrating. >:(

Also, Mycroft. But nobody gets into Mycroft's head~ ;D

Just him? Every time I'm writing ANY of them I get that. I look at whatever I'm writing and my mind immdiately switches to Chuck and the Monster at the End of this Book and I can't help but wodner what the heck they'd think of me if they existed (actually no, I don't HAVE to think of what they'd think, because having seen that episode we KNOW what they would think.)

Castiel just looks confusedly at me. Dean is glaring slightly suspicious daggers.

I'm writing a Buffy/Harry Potter crossover fanfic, and I'm having a hard time getting OUT of Buffy's head. She just does that thing with the words and they come out a certain way, and I can't stop. It's coloring my writing and making me sound like a teenage valley girl. I'm even starting to talk like her in real life. Needing some intellectual prose up in this bit.

Pretty much everyone. I'm horrible with characters that aren't my own. Which is why this year I'm only using one non-OC: Matsuda, who is easy to get in the head of as there's nothing already in his head to get in the way. But even so, he's still the hardest character to write convincingly in my story...

It's probably horrible to say, but I'm not feeling as alone now that I realize more people are having this problem, heh. :3

I don't know if everyone thinks this is the case, but I find that when characters are just beyond the typical, regular human, they get harder to understand - mostly because as a typical, regular human myself I don't have that experience. It's a fun exercise in getting past that mindset.

My WriMo fic this year is Sherlock-centric, and he's always too analytic, or too painfully-ooc playful, or too emotionally vulnerable. While I imagine he's most likely sometimes, at least in my universe/particular headcanon, all of those things, finding the balance between those separate facets of his personality is proving a real challenge. It's definitely a fun one attempting to conquer, though I admit there are days I just want to throttle him - Let me inside your brilliant mind, pretty please?!

It's Megabyte from ReBoot for me. He hasn't been in the story much yet, but assuming the story goes according to plan, he'll having a larger role eventually. For all the interactions that I invision him in, he's never the one whose POV I'm writing from, because I can't seem to get past writing him as some boring, not very cunning, not exactly suave jerk.

I mean he's a jerk but c'mon.

And it could be that the story will work out better anyway if his thoughts are never really voiced in the same way the other characters' thoughts are, instead going through a "it's all their interpretations of what he said/did" route, but ugggghhhhh MEGABYTE. >:(

Then I RPed Link for a year and a half and now he's my easiest character to write... which isn't good as the fic is from Sheik's POV XD

My main characters are the Doctor and Merlin and I'm having trouble with them both. LOL The Doctor has a personality that I'm naturally attracted to, so I'm scared I'm going to glorify him. And Merlin has a personality similar in many ways to my own, so I'm scared I'm going to self-insert.

But I noticed once Arthur entered the story, it was suddenly easier to write the Doctor and Merlin. Further proof that Merthur is canon? i d e k

Shockingly, I'm writing a Thor fic which is really a giant Marvel crossover.

And Thor won't talk to me. He's just so straightforward that his sections end up being exceptionally dry and boring for me and everyone involved and it's not fair to him because he's starting to seem like he's only a love interest and not a fully developed character in his own right and it is bothering me.

Steve Rogers aka Captain America is also proving to be a issue. I think the problem is that I have idealized him, but in a way that makes him impossible to right.

And I am very frustrated.

I'm pretty good at getting into the characters heads, so I'm usually good at that. But... big but, sometimes I can't get exactly how they sound. And they either all start sounding alike, or all like me, or some combination of the both.

Not to mention, I totally had HG Wells (Warehouse 13 one, so a female one) pegged in my head. How she talks, the sort of words she uses, etc. And then I totally lost her a couple of chapters ago. Argh... I think I've fixed most of it, and now I mostly have her back, but, oy... she shouldn't not sound just like Pete or Myka or my ER characters.

Anyway, good luck to everyone trying to stay in their characters' heads.

My biggest one is Scar from Fullmetal Alchemist. I just cannot get in that man's head. He's an impossible brick wall. Which is why I switched to first person POV from Ed's POV for a long fic I'm working on from third person limited POV. This way, I don't have to know what he's thinking, just have a general idea what he's doing.

I also cannot read Ganondorf for the life of me. A couple friends of mine have been huge helps so far this year on that.

Re: Fanfiction writers, is there ever that one character that won't let you in their head?

I used to have the hardest time writing Reno from Final Fantasy VII -- which was pretty frustrating, considering that when it comes to FFVII, I almost exclusively write about the Turks and Zack Fair. Once I was able to figure him out a bit more, he instantly became one of my favorite characters (and I suddenly loved Axel from KH2 too XD) and he winds up always being one of the most important characters in my fics now. I've noticed from reading other fics that it tends to be really hard to find a balance with his character though. In Advent Children, he and Rude were pretty much exclusively used for comic relief and while that was an important part of their characters in the main game, they were still capable of being serious when it was required. I tend to tap into his more serious side a lot more than some writers, but have been told in reviews that they liked the way I characterized him.

I honestly don't think I've ever written Cloud actually (his post-Crisis Core character is too emo for my tastes and I just haven't had an opportunity to write him in my fics), but I can see how that would be hard -- especially without playing Crisis Core. He's a pretty shy, quiet guy in Crisis Core, but even then, he isn't exactly, uh, conscious in a lot of his scenes. By the way, I highly recommend playing Crisis Core -- I'm totally biased because I'm one of the rare people that prefer it to the main game, though. Even though you already have at least a vague idea of how it's going to end from the start, it has a great storyline and I love all the characters that are only in it and not the other (widely released) games.

I'm sure there are probably others, but the only other characters coming to mind that I've had a hard time writing are the Digimon from the original series. My first attempt at a NaNo last year was a nostaligic trip into the Digital World with an entire new adventure for the original digidestined and they got to the Digital World...and I couldn't write the digimon. It's pretty hard to have an epic adventure with Digimon fighting each other when I can only write the humans. And even then, I couldn't write Mimi or Joe, like at all. Needless to say, I switched over and wrote my first Harry Potter fanfiction.

Given the circumstances of my story, I'm having to work verrry hard to keep him in the middle. It doesn't help that he tends to be a man of few words.

Oh. My. God.

In my Adventures of Tintin fanfic, Tintin is driving me insane. It might be because of the way I twisted his character, but he's just so strange... He's not afraid to put people he hates in serious harm, and yet when his enemy tries to kill him, he simply ties him up downstairs? WTH?

Still, Tintin, the fact that you let your dog help you out is freaking epic. Pets forever!!!

For NaNo '09, I wrote a Harry Potter fanfiction about the Marauders in their first year at Hogwarts. I had the hardest time with James and Severus, but James especially.

As long as I have canon-typical situations, I can usually get into characters' heads fairly easily. I was co-writing an NCIS fanfiction with a friend (we started in Mayish and just finished this past weekend....), and there were times where I just couldn't figure out what was going on inside Gibbs' head, because everything was so far outside the realm of canon.

And when writing seaQuest fanfiction, I tend to struggle with Dr. Westphalen. (Bonus points for anyone who knows about seaQuest.)

Writing a Supernatural fanfic and having a hell of a time (huh, ironic) writing Castiel. It's set between seasons 5 and 6 though so I'm hoping that's the problem. Dean I can get, no sweat. Totally understand him and I think I do alright with his dialogue. But Castiel... Why, Castiel? I'm trying to justify his transformation in season 6 with limited success. Plus people are going to be PISSED at him when they read the end of the story. XD Even I don't fully get why he would do that.

Attempting to write a Kingdom Hearts 'fic when Sora won't let you write him is very difficult. In fact...in every fandom I have ever been in thus far, no female character has ever been extremely difficult. It's always a male character. I don't know why.

Which is weird. Zack lets me write him just fine, and Hayner is ridiculously easy to write, and fun, too. Every other male character has given me grief, and it's always select ones, and it's always weird, too. Couldn't write Trowa from Gundam Wing for crap, couldn't write Squall or Irvine remotely well when I was in FF8 fandom and now...Sora. He should be the easiest to write, but no! He's the hardest character so far. It's a good thing he's always gone in my fics. Every scene with him is a constant battle.

I'm writing pretty much Detective Conan right now and mostly focus on the FBI. While I love both Jodie and Shuuichi, they both can be difficult sometimes. Right now, Jodie is refusing to play calm while she's being confronted with Vermouth (they're at a public place and the Detective Boys are around, so they can't just try to kill each other). She's throwing one fit after another.
And don't start with Shuu. He's just standing in a corner, smoking and glaring at me. He's being creepy...

And when I'm writing for X-Men (Movieverse) I'm trying to avoid Wolverine. I just don't get him. Also, it's difficult to see what Gambit thinks.

And back again to complain. Writing yet another Supernatural story and now Sam is the one giving me trouble. Why are you such a whiny bitch for me, Sam Winchester? Yes, I know Dean is going to Hell but no one wants to listen to you nag him. I have no idea how to get him to loosen up a little. Also apparently I'm incapable of not making him into a nagging woman. Why, Sammy? Why?

I'm writing a fanfic for my friend's birthday involving the Neo Angelique characters. (She has the hots for Nyx but Rayne's mine, bwahaha.) For some reason, I just CANNOT get them right. I've been studying the game and the anime both and guhhh. It's not working. Nyx especially is hard for me, though it feels like he shouldn't be. J.D. is easy, just insert the word "smile" into his sentences about a kajillion times and you're there. I actually wrote Hyuuga out of the story because I can't think of anything for him to do besides sit quietly and be stoic, and that's boring. Argh you guys, just get along and make this work! Her birthday's in less than a week!!

Way late on the advice, but...Have you watched FMA: Brotherhood? Scar's in close to half of it, so you'll get to see much more of his personality. You might find it easier to get in his head afterwards.

Sasuke is a difficult character. I like to explore "what if" scenarios with him. What if Itachi spared him seeing his family's deaths and took him from the village. That sort of thing. He's a very bland character, in my opinion.

Sai is fun to write as he gets older and sees more of the world.

Orochimaru, from the Naruto series. I want to write one with him as a protagonist - not a good guy, but someone with a valid logic and moral system of his own.

The best I could do was give him a love for the Sound Village that resembles Naruto's love for Konoha, but that's not quite canon.
