So I'm just writing it as a fantasy with a historic feeling setting and I'll fill in the specific details in the editing process. I'm still trying not to get bogged down in the "what if" details. In my story, there was a plague (which is why the Revolution never happened) and its really hard to decide how everything would have been affected, especially technologically. Anyone else having these issues with their alternate reality? Basically I had the Korean War take a really nasty turn and become a huge nuclear war, which kills off pretty much everyone and sets the survivors back to the stone age. One of the people killed was President Harry Truman, who feels guilty over being unable to save everyone and tries to recreate the United States. He doesn't do very well, since he's a ghost now, and only a handful of people have the ability to see and speak with ghosts. Those who do misunderstand him, and worship him as a god, which annoys him. In some places---Hawaii, for example, where the story is set--the family of ghost mediums develop into a clergy system, with a lot of influence over the new Hawaiian government, and over time, grows fairly corrupt. And, to make matters over the course of five thousand years, Truman is starting to legitimately turn into an actual god, against his will. It's set 100 years into the future, but the whole plot revolves around a completely different history after WW1... :D And there's a lot of science in it... Yay, research! What did I get into...
