Ok, Who's writing Dystopain? Or, who knows what it is and is intrigued?

Do you mean Dystopian?

Yeah, my computer auto-corrects it to Dystopain. Trying to get the problem fixed . . . .

While mine isn't Dystopian, it definitely has some Dystopian elements in it. Basically, the government is corrupt, as presented through its outwardly vague actions, and minor "revision" of the news and textbooks, spurred by widespread prejudice. It's all basically a desperate attempt to keep peace and perfection within the nation, and they often blame problems on other things in order to preserve the idea that humanity is completely without flaws.

Again, these minor Dystopian elements only act as the environment surrounding my storyline. I didn't want them to consume my novel, for they only exist to contribute to a theme I'm addressing in the story, thus why I tried to make the corruption realistic and subtle.

Oh! Mine! I get annoyed at how a ton of dystopian books feature a single totalitarian government, so I decided to spice things up a little. In mine, the main city is ruled by a bunch of police chiefs who basically behave like warlords. They all fight over who gets more control. Police brutality is sort of a HUGE thing in my novel.

mine started out very dystopian, and it was too depressing for me...changed to more steampunk / steampunkish fantasy. Much better.
Though I still have the dystopian one in the wings to be written later.

Fantasy dystopia here :)

It has a single totalitarian government, but I think (hope) I have a good twist on the "big symbolic dystopian leader" trope. They managed to get in power through fear and created new laws that basically state they can never leave power, and their leader's word is final. A massive charade is set up around the government so that the people don't notice what is going on, and even believe they have a fair election system. There's modernized Big Brother-esque surveillance and the towns and villages have been grouped into massive cities, keeping the population together and under control.

Unfortunately, I am paranoid that what I'm writing is essentially V For Vendetta with Shapeshifters, even though I hadn't even seen the film or read the comic before I came up with the idea. (Saw it when a friend I told the plot about mentioned the similarities.) It's different enough... I hope :)

I've seen the movie a billion times. I honestly don't think it sounds that similar. I think it seems closer to 1984 than anything (not like you're copying it though).

V for Vendetta (at least in the movie) is much more fascist, and they had basically no tolerance for homosexuality, different religion, etc. I think as long as you don't have a masked, burnt vigilante who is only referred by the roman numeral of his cell when he was captured by the government, I think you should be good.

Lol, yes. I've read 1984 and I'm satisfied it's far away from it. The only thing that's "very" similar to 1984 is the surveillance, but that's a trope in a number of dystopias.

The similarities to V for Vendetta was the plot of one character who killed a number of prominent politicians with the help of others; the fact that one character is unwilling to go along with said plot, but at the end chooses to after the death of another character; and the fact the ruling party got into power through fear.

But those similarities can be applied to a number of other texts anyway, so I'm not too worried at the moment, but I have been known to worry too much about similarities between my stories and other things, haha :|

As Kurt Vonnegut said when writing the Piano Player, he "cheerfully ripped off the plot of Brave New World, whose plot had been cheerfully ripped off from Yevgeny Zamyatin's We."

He didn't give a damn about the similarities between his works and other Dystopian writers' works. In fact, he acknowledged them, and he still remains an extremely famous and beloved writer, even after his death.

Mine is mostly based in a Dystopian society, but I also have a contrasting Utopia. It's mostly supposed to prove a point about how two complete opposite spectrums exist in this world, and it kind of leads to a basis for the development of my MC.

WriteYourWorld

I wrote and I'm writing (second book) a Dystopian-Romance book. Essentially, human beings have given up their ability to feel in order to establish and maintain peace.
All isn't as it seems.

It's actually published up on Smashwords right now, and I have been trying to find some readers to review it so I can make it even better. It's been hard finding folks, but what can you do.

Oh, my god! Happy to have a thread for dystopia. I'm planning to write one, just that it's targeted to the YA audience and all. I've been having ideas but they're still raw, and I need to cook things up more. Right now I'm playing around with the concept of developing "bodies for the government." It's this line that struck me in my art studies 2 class (which actually seems more like a social science of some sort), where our professor argued how those at the top of the pyramid just kept producing things that will drive us to work for their advantage, and thus become bodies for them. Meh, but this is an idea. I haven't come up with anything that feels right yet. Oh, coming up with a plot is an itchy process.

oh, i'm so glad i stumbled on this thread!

i'm just mapping out what i'm going to write in june's camp and i had my characters down, but there was still something missing - thanks, all - i've been turning over the last couple of days' of revelations about our beloved government, police and media and now i see where i can fit **ALL** of that into it!

thanks again

Mine is Dystopianish, I guess, but at the same time kind of an utopia as well. The nonmagical government has declared war on the magical one, and they're making life living hell for the wizards, but at the same time, it's still kind of an utopia because... well... kinda complicated, but they're also protected from the horrors of a global-warming-ized Earth. Dysutopia?
