Wuxia

So, is anyone out there familiar with wuxia fiction? Anyone writing it? Not sure?

Wuxia is a genre originating in China. Over the past ten years, it has become more and more prevalent in Western culture, with the advent of movies like "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", "House of Flying Daggers", "The Forbidden Kingdome", and even "Kung Fu Panda". It focuses heavily on the martial arts aspect as well as the xia code of chivalry (mainly in line with the ideals of Confuscianism, with the addition of individualism). It is hard to explain in this little blurb, but I have done my best. The easiest way to get an understanding is to familiarize yourself...I digress.

So is anyone wiritng in this genre? Is this even an alternate genre and not just an adventure sub-genre? I want to know what you think and know and are doing.

Re: Wuxia

I'm trying to write a wuxia-ish story this year. It leans towards the more fantasy/magic side of things (think "Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain" with a touch of the Chinese ghost story elements) and is set in Shambhala rather than China.

I think wuxia is more or less the Chinese equivalent of the superheros genre. (Although individual novels may emphasize the mystery aspect, the romance, the patriotic aspect, etc. etc.) (And "House of Flying Daggers" was, as people have said, basically "Infernal Affairs" in ancient costume...and not as good. :-P) (And "Wuxia", the new Donnie Yen movie, isn't really so much traditional wuxia as it is "A History of Violence" with more martial arts!)

For NaNo, I'm classifying my novel as "fantasy", as I think mine is more fantasy than adventure.

Re: Wuxia

Wuxia is also set in a romanticised version of China's feudal past. I've always seen it as more as the equivalent of the fantasy genre.

My character is a martial artist and he does use it and there is magic and he does, in fact, use it at close quarters. But I wouldn't call it "wuxia" because of the setting.
