I realize that it's lots of fun to peruse the Science Fiction and Fantasy forums respectively, but I thought it'd be nice for all the science fantasy people to have some common ground where we can talk about all of the above.
*waves* Love science fantasy. Who says a fantasy world needs to be either stuck in a perpetual medieval era, or be a carbon copy of our own world except with vampires? The world I usually write in is very much science fantasy. A thousand years ago, it was high fantasy, then five hundred years later it was more steampunk then urban fantasy... and now the wizards are building spaceships.
Although this year I'm writing a Star Wars crossover fanfic involving a dimension-hopping wizard winding up in the Old Republic era... That's still science fantasy though, heh.
I'm pretty sure my entire universe counts as Science Fantasy. On the one hand, there's magic. On the other hand, there's aliens, space travel, and a lot of "what if" AUish stuff going on. Nice to know I'm not alone! C:
Woohoo, yay! Someone started a Science Fantasy thread! Mine mostly deals with parallel universes and genetic engineering, but there will also be a fair number of fantasy tropes, too.
I think I might be Science Fantasy, my novel is set in a bleak post apocalypse world with people of supernatural nature. I never really know how to describe it, or where I fit in. So much so that last year I dropped my original idea to go with a chick lit novel.
Yeah, my idea falls far more into Science Fantasy than Science Fiction, for certain. I'm using elements from a few different genres, primarily SciFi in the sense that ... well, it takes place in a "futuristic" setting and I'm attempting to incorporate some logical technology ideas, but fundamentally the universe is highly dependent on the supernatural elements that throw it way out of SciFi. The story itself will verge into Supernatural Fiction and border slightly against horror in some ways, too.
I just selected Fantasy since it is so broad anyway.
Ah, Science Fantasy. Probably my favorite genre, since I prefer low fantasy and soft sci fi, and mixing them is always fun!
My novel would 'technically' be Sci Fi. It's set in a future earth where aliens have taken over the world, leaving only a few small colonies of humanity that are just beginning to reclaim modern technology.
But!
The aliens are essentially elves without magic, they look like drow, think the Emperors and nobility are descendants of gods (sorta. It's more like they deify their ancestors) and the plot draws on a lot of fantasy elements.
And Science Fiction has always been used as a tool to explore social and political ideas. Fantasy, when it's actually trying to be more than a fun story, usually explores spiritual and religious ideas. My novel is a very religious novel, but most of the conflict is political. Win-win!
I definitely work in this area. Mainly in cases where science fiction and fantasy meet and fun ensues.
In some instances, the fantasy side is doing the science while trying to handle the science fiction world of the not too distance future. What would an elf think of an advanced version of the iPad, one that is self powered and has an AI that can answer most questions? How would fairies and other fae deal with cold iron creations like steam engines?
Science Fantasy writer reporting in. I've mostly been hanging around in YA actually, since my novel is shaping up to be YA Science Fantasy...
It's going to be post-apocalyptic and focused on a bunch of teenagers who have supernatural abilities. There are some definite (though in some cases very small scale/discreet) more advanced science moments (as it is set about 100 years in the future, and the apocalyptic event is going to be what starts the story), but there is basically some magic in this version of the universe.
I'll probably check back to this thread from time to time. :)
Science fantasy here :-) Glad I found a thread about it, because like most people I was hanging out in both fantasy and sci-fi. (and thanks for the people in the 'other' forum here for telling me it's science fantasy in the first place. ^^ After all the multiverse is endless and variable so there have to be advanced civilizations that travel through it. I'm planning a first novel in a series, attempt at a synopsis on my profile.
here, I'm doing Science Fantasy this year! Good that I found this threat, I also was hanging out in both the Sci-Fi and the Fantasy forums.
My story is set in the future, in another galaxy. I think it's a bit more Sci-Fi than Fantasy, but then that could change during November. I hope my idea will work out, so far I really like it. I still am so surprised it turned out to be Science Fantasy, 20 days ago I thought I would write a historical Fantasy novel. Not this year! And Science Fantasy is defenitly more of my liking ;)
So glad I found this Thread!! My storyline never truly fit into the Fantasy genre; as I'd been told to categorize it. And it is not true hard core Sci-Fi; though there are some definite aspects: multi dimensional characters and time displacement. Happy writing everyone.
W00t! I'm doing a Science Fantasy this year too! My story takes place in a future after a war that nearly destroys the world. Nations fall and once again became kingdoms and many of the technologies become banned. My MC, Alva, is an assassin whose job is to kill the King of Ramia (what used to be the USA). It's got magic, cyborgs (called SOLDIERS), Shifters ect...
One of my Nano projects is science-fantasy. It's secondary-world with a roughly late 21st-century tech level. Though, to me, it's not just the advanced technology that's interesting (advanced bio-engineering and medicine that have extended the average life-span to well over 100 years, as well as creating some real monsters), but also what they DON'T have (satellites, reliable internet, airplanes). I always like watching technology develop differently on different worlds.
Of course, we have tons of magic too. This story is set on the same fantasy world as all my other stories and none of the magic has gone anywhere. The MCs are medics and have healing charms and potions right alongside advanced pharmaceuticals.
Um. . . I'm not sure if my story counts as Science Fantasy or not. I have neither elves nor aliens. But what I do have is reincarnation via genetic manipulation/cloning, fanatics bent on bringing their dead gods to life, political intrigue/kidnapping/assassinations, and a couple kids living out the mythos of an ancient religion and becoming gods/ realizing their divinity.
It's all rather /Shades of Frank Herbert/, actually.
Science Fantasy

Anyone else writing science fantasy? :)

Re: Science Fantasy
My favorite genre. ;D Who says they have to be seperate?
Re: Science Fantasy
Last year's NaNovel was science fantasy, but it was more "science" than "fantasy" so I put it in scifi. This year I'm writing neither. Oh well.
Re: Science Fantasy
Steampunk counts, aye? At least, closer than either of those two. :)
Re: Science Fantasy
*waves* Yeah, I make up the effects I need then I rationalize them. If I can't rationalize them, I just move fast.

Re: Science Fantasy
ReeReevil - Now why would you do a thing like that? That makes me sad. ;) Your story sounds awesome.
Re: Science Fantasy
I felt oh so alone among the magical systems and elves. hehe

Re: Science Fantasy
I just discovered science fantasy a couple of weeks ago and realized that was what my story (mostly) is.
