I realize that it's lots of fun to peruse the Science Fiction and Fantasy forums respectively, but I thought it'd be nice for all the science fantasy people to have some common ground where we can talk about all of the above.

Anyone else writing science fantasy? :)

*waves* Love science fantasy. Who says a fantasy world needs to be either stuck in a perpetual medieval era, or be a carbon copy of our own world except with vampires? The world I usually write in is very much science fantasy. A thousand years ago, it was high fantasy, then five hundred years later it was more steampunk then urban fantasy... and now the wizards are building spaceships.

Although this year I'm writing a Star Wars crossover fanfic involving a dimension-hopping wizard winding up in the Old Republic era... That's still science fantasy though, heh.

Yeah, my idea falls far more into Science Fantasy than Science Fiction, for certain. I'm using elements from a few different genres, primarily SciFi in the sense that ... well, it takes place in a "futuristic" setting and I'm attempting to incorporate some logical technology ideas, but fundamentally the universe is highly dependent on the supernatural elements that throw it way out of SciFi. The story itself will verge into Supernatural Fiction and border slightly against horror in some ways, too.

I just selected Fantasy since it is so broad anyway.

Re: Science Fantasy

Ah, Science Fantasy. Probably my favorite genre, since I prefer low fantasy and soft sci fi, and mixing them is always fun!

My novel would 'technically' be Sci Fi. It's set in a future earth where aliens have taken over the world, leaving only a few small colonies of humanity that are just beginning to reclaim modern technology.

But!

The aliens are essentially elves without magic, they look like drow, think the Emperors and nobility are descendants of gods (sorta. It's more like they deify their ancestors) and the plot draws on a lot of fantasy elements.

And Science Fiction has always been used as a tool to explore social and political ideas. Fantasy, when it's actually trying to be more than a fun story, usually explores spiritual and religious ideas. My novel is a very religious novel, but most of the conflict is political. Win-win!

I definitely work in this area. Mainly in cases where science fiction and fantasy meet and fun ensues.

In some instances, the fantasy side is doing the science while trying to handle the science fiction world of the not too distance future. What would an elf think of an advanced version of the iPad, one that is self powered and has an AI that can answer most questions? How would fairies and other fae deal with cold iron creations like steam engines?

Science Fantasy writer reporting in. I've mostly been hanging around in YA actually, since my novel is shaping up to be YA Science Fantasy...

It's going to be post-apocalyptic and focused on a bunch of teenagers who have supernatural abilities. There are some definite (though in some cases very small scale/discreet) more advanced science moments (as it is set about 100 years in the future, and the apocalyptic event is going to be what starts the story), but there is basically some magic in this version of the universe.

I'll probably check back to this thread from time to time. :)

After all the multiverse is endless and variable so there have to be advanced civilizations that travel through it.
I'm planning a first novel in a series, attempt at a synopsis on my profile.

Good that I found this threat, I also was hanging out in both the Sci-Fi and the Fantasy forums.

My story is set in the future, in another galaxy. I think it's a bit more Sci-Fi than Fantasy, but then that could change during November. I hope my idea will work out, so far I really like it.
I still am so surprised it turned out to be Science Fantasy, 20 days ago I thought I would write a historical Fantasy novel. Not this year! And Science Fantasy is defenitly more of my liking ;)

One of my Nano projects is science-fantasy. It's secondary-world with a roughly late 21st-century tech level. Though, to me, it's not just the advanced technology that's interesting (advanced bio-engineering and medicine that have extended the average life-span to well over 100 years, as well as creating some real monsters), but also what they DON'T have (satellites, reliable internet, airplanes). I always like watching technology develop differently on different worlds.

Of course, we have tons of magic too. This story is set on the same fantasy world as all my other stories and none of the magic has gone anywhere. The MCs are medics and have healing charms and potions right alongside advanced pharmaceuticals.

I freaking hate elves and dwarves and medieval worlds already, but I love magic. On the other side, I don't really like spaceships and aliens, but I do love not-so-friendly AIs and techonology. So, in my world there's magic (albeit a very strange kind of it) on one side, and techonology on the other ... though technology tends to collapse when in touch with magic.

I'm doing a fantasy/scifi bit here.

I have two worlds that occupy the same space. They are feeding off each other, one siphons the magical energy off the other, and uses it as a super-natural "fossil fuel" and the other world is siphoning off life energy from the first world. The only ones that know what is going on are a few scientists in the one world, mages in the other, and some native shamen-like peoples that can walk between the worlds.

The action revolvs around a MC discovering what is happening in the science-world, and being chased off, hiding with shamen by walking back into the magic world, where they track down the magic cabal that is destroying the science world.

Kind of a commentary on oil-dependance/ excuse to introduce a flying pirate ship that hops between worlds...

Re: Science Fantasy

I'm writing a story based in the Shadowrun Universe (though with little shadowrunning going on - or is it?). So obviously Science Fantasy.

I know that Gibson is crying that I do not write a proper Cyberpunk novel. Next time, maybe.

Re: Science Fantasy

Because my story takes place in the future, there came an almost automatic fictional quality to the technology/science my characters use. I'm splashing in a bit of esoteric spirituality, and allowing events that most practical people in 'the real world' would consider impossible...and...not all of my characters are 'of this world'. I guess that puts me in the not well populated genre of 'Esoteric Science Fantasy'.

Yay! I get to make my own rules! :-D

Technically this is what my story is. But as its more steam punk than fantasy, and has far more science influence than fantasy I filed it under sci-fi.

Goblins, and Airships, Magic with mechanics, Dystopian societies atop living planets. These are just a few of my favorite things.

Woot! I'm definitely more science fantasy... Well, urban fantasy with some horror thrown in. Post-war crumbling civilizations, a ruined planet, and a mixture of human and otherworldly races I'm trying to find something else to call other than "fae".

Re: Science Fantasy

Mine is more Sci-fi so that's what I put it under but it's defiantly in this category.
Basically it's an alien apocalypse thing but there is a race of aliens that are basically space vampires and then the human/alien hybrids end up being what humans know as vampires.
There are also wolf demons that posses one of my MCs (and apparently the main villain...) that makes 'em go on random killing spireas.

Sci-Fantasy is probably what my story is. I haven't really brought up magic yet, aside from a few prophetic dreams which I'm not sure counts (and besides...that was in last year's portion of the story...I'm seriously not getting very far this year...I blame crazy-IRL stuff XP), but it's probably there.

Oh, so that's what I'm writing! :D Hullo!

Mine is more on the fantasy side of things, but based on altering the laws of physics. There's also a big thing about alternate universes, and they may have to build a rocket to fix this whole mess. The results of all this are very fantasy, however.

Re: Science Fantasy

'Tis what I write. I used to write Sci-Fi then my friend got me a bit into Fantasy so I wrote a bit with that then somewhere in time it all began to mesh together.

My NaNo novel is set with aliens, spaceships, and futuristic technology meanwhile keeping a very fantasy approach with going sort of into the magic spectrum (not really, just has a sort of magic feel) with Sight and "Seeing" into Dimensions. The Dimensions can be other places or emotions/thoughts of a person. Also, while great technology runs rampant, it also holds an odd medieval touch. Wall surround every city rich enough to make one due to constant warring and such.
