OK, this is bizarre ... I'm KIND OF writing a Western but it's got a twist - think Tempest meets The Searchers or TRue Grit (depending on how I go with this). It's got a kind of spiritual feeling to it ... I have never written anything like it in my life so it will be interesting to see how it turns out. I'm writing for two charities and currently aiming at 100,000 words ...
I'm writing a Western. I don't know why they never have this as it's own forum!
My first (and second and third and fourth) NaNoWriMo's were Westerns. Though, since it takes place 50 miles away from Chicago, I call it a Mid-Western...
You might want to check out the Adventure genre lounge. That's the general catch all that includes that Western genre (at least in past years that's where the Western writers have been hanging out).
Yeah, I hang out in the Mystery forum `cause my novels are mysteries. I just think it'd be cool to have a separate forum for all the trip-ups and questions specific to Westerns.
I think I will check out the Adventure forum, though. That sounds like fun...
I wrote a Western for my first NaNo, and I'm doing another one this year. Happy to see a thread for us up already!
I usually stay here in Other Genres because I tend to write cross-genre stories - the universe my past and present Western stories are set in also is Alternate History and a bit Steampunk. And there's some magic in there too.
I got pointed to the "adventure" genre lounge too and I just started a Westerns thread there: http://www.nanowrimo.org/en/forums/adventure/threads/7488
I hope you'll join in. I want to know what your story sounds like to far.
There's a couple of Westerners (is that the right word?) in the Historical genre lounge too, and I think I even saw a few threads under romance, so I guess it's open to interpretation.

I think the Western genre is hard to pinpoint because it's a major historical setting with its own tropes and expectations, but can vary from adventure to thriller to romance.
This will be my third try at a western. The other two remain unfinished. Hope to get back to them at some point. Found this fantastic reference for all things western: http://www.truewestmagazine.com/jcontent/
I'm tackling a Western paranormal with alternate history thrown in for good measure. This is largely inspired by the intense amount of love I had for playing the Red Dead Redemption video game combined with an awesome typo I made one night that kicked my brain into overdrive.
I'm writing a western this year. Previously I wrote SF. I hung my hat in Historical Fiction and then decided to check out Other. Now I have to explore Adventure!
I have a novel that is a Historical Christian Romance that takes place in Texas, complete with Texas Rangers and outlaws, so I suppose I AM, in fact, writing a Western.
Westerns
Who else is doing a western? This will be my first one and it seems to be coming along better than anything else I've done for NaNo.

Re: Westerns
Yeah I am writing one as well. Last year I wrote Young Adult, but no more. I am stepping up my game this year!
And why isn't it listed as a major genre?

Thanks for the tip. Will head over there too.

Re: Westerns
I'm working on a fanfic western with no cross overs, so it is good to find out where the Western writers are. It's good to pick up tips.
Re: Westerns
Anyone up for sharing resources and links they come across?
Re: Westerns
Love to!

If anyone is looking for info about Canadian soldiers/NWMP officers in the era of the Old West, this is a good site: http://www.militaryheritage.com/vic_sold.htm
Re: Westerns
I'm writng modern cowboys fanfic - a modernized Magnificent 7 epic with a trace of Justified tied in. I consider it a Western... sorta.
Re: Westerns
I love the Magnificent Seven! Are you setting your story in the current modern day, or did you pick a particular era?
Re: Westerns
There's another thread for Westerns up in Adventure:

Re: Westerns
Please stop trying to herd us north towards the action-adventure mountains. Please?
Re: Westerns
Both of mine take place in the Arizona territory. I'm more familiar with that area.
Re: Westerns
That's good. I've researched the territories I'm setting my story in, but it's hard to discover where and when they change.

Thanks for the link! They have some really interesting stuff over there.

My western novel, Detour Trail, has been accepted by a publisher and should come out in early 2013. Yippee!
