If you're looking for genre identification help, there's a sticky in the Other Genres forum to help you find your niche.
If you're looking for dares, you'll find that thread stickied in the Reaching 50k forum, so mosey on over there to get your groove on.
The plot doctoring forum is a great place to ask general plotting questions, plug plot holes, and find names for your character's great aunt... but before you post take a moment to consider what you're asking. Your post may be better suited to one of our numerous genre lounges. If you post here, and it fits better in one of those forums, it may be moved without notice, so think first: Is it genre specific? Ghosts and spooks should probably be in Horror and Supernatural. Dragons and elves belong in Fantasy.
This is a *very* high traffic forum, and you really might get better, more specific attention in your genre forums, rather than getting pushed aside by the wave of other questions here. If it doesn't fit in one of those genre forums (or if it's more general than genre-specific), then feel free to post here.
You may have posted here in the last few days, and noticed that your post has vanished. It's okay! It's not gone, but we may have moved it to a more appropriate forum. This forum is so big, so fast, so BUSY, that posts get lost, so it's in your best interests that if a post is specific enough to fit in a specific genre forum, we've moved it there so you have a better chance of getting the feedback you're looking for. If you look in the genre forums, and find your post in a forum it doesn't fit, let me know which would be a better genre for your post and I'll move it there.
Some places to look:
Fantasy (Fairies, dragons, and magic) Adventure (Pirates! Adventure!) Other genres (fanfiction posts have been moved there) Horror & supernatural (ghosts/supernatural stuff) Mystery, Thriller and suspense (whodunits, murder mysteries)
Please note: plot questions and genre questions posted in this thread will be deleted without reply, so please start new topics (or look for an existing one to add on to.)
My problem is I had a plot, it was really serious, but then I got bored. And I made it less Sirius. Now my characters are really confused because I make up my story as I go. My original plot was that my characters are these kids that have been kidnapped and turned into weapons of mass destruction, and they have to rescue the world from evil scientist who are trying to take over. But now I'm, lost. I really don't know what to do. HELP!! - Lupus Amans.
I suggest you post in the Plot Doctoring forum; this thread isn't really intended for you to work out plot details. :) It's a general moderation post to help you find where threads might have gone.
I read in the Reference Desk forum that questions about what characters should do should be posted here, but you didn't mention that. Is it okay to post that here? I don't want to accidentally put it in the wrong forum and make someone have to move it. (It's a question about how an adopted kid might react to learning about adoption and meeting his real mother.) Thanks!
The way to know whether to post in Reference Desk or Plot Doctoring is simple:
Reference Desk = Facts (How far from point A to B, how much Jello would fill the Whitehouse, how much yarn for giraffe sweaters, Peach murder how to, etc)
Plot Doctoring = Creative (I don't know what will happen between point A and B, how does someone achieve a phobia of Jello, how might your character react to a giraffe wearing a sweater, why would someone murder with a peach, etc)

I need to ask for help making up a drug that could put my character to sleep. I don't want to use the name of an existing drug. Would that be okay to post here? Because I really have no idea where else to post, as I have no idea what genre my story is! *Goes off to post for genre identification*
Not sure where else to post... Is it normal to consider changing genres and rewriting everything I've written so far? Obviously December is for edits, and this is probably just my brain searching for a distraction, but I was wondering if it was common?
I'm not sure where to ask this so I thought I might ask it here and if you have an idea where i should post it please let me know!
Okay, so I need a little help.
My characters (one male the other female) just graduated. They have been best friends for the past four years and are about to head off to college. They are going to different colleges in different states, but they are cool with that. Right before they go their separate ways, they have a huge fight and the MMC tells the FMC that he never wants to see her again.
My question is, does anyone have an idea what they might fight about? because I got nothing.
Maybe they fought because one of them had strong feelings for the other, and was feeling abandoned by the other. If that makes sense. Like while they agreed to going to different colleges, one of them had other feelings about it but didn't share it. Sorry I'm probably no help.
When we post in Plot Doctoring and our question is answered, are we supposed to delete the thread on our own or does it delete itself automatically after a few days?
Threads are very rarely deleted. They remain in case someone else has a similar situation that they need help with. Even when the forums get wiped for the next NaNoWriMo, the threads from the previous years are archived. The only threads or comments that are deleted are obvious spam.
My question is about how to link three characters together. I started writing in a 'flow' to develop my voice and found three people emerged. One- probably my protagonist but I dont like her that much...has got in a mess as her marriage was in a state and a female she worked with and had supported her through this developed an obsession with her- they fought when my character agreed to reconcile with her husband and the other female ended up jumping off -or being pushed off by accident-a bridge. The second I love is an artist who hasn't painted for four years and the reason is yet to be revealed (to me too!). He has been in a relationship and has found out his partner is being unfaithful and he's left, going back to his Beach-house Gallery so guess he's going to start painting again. Third one- lovely character-lives on her own but with little cocker spaniel in a cottage by sea and owns and runs a small bookshop cafe. She's just had her first manuscript accepted with revisions. She meets the artist guy who comes to her cafe and recognises him as the artist who painted her favourite painting-but it's all peripheral at the moment. Think these two characters will become friends but not lovers. Shouild I do chapter about and then wend the stopries together? Sorry this is so long?!
One of my characters has a mafia-hired hitman after him, originally because of seeing some books or something that he wasn't supposed to see, but now I'm not so satisfied with that reason and I need a new one, any suggestions?
I have a woman who had a romantic interest (Guy A) that turned out to be a jerk, so she dumped him for another guy (Guy B) , who, as it turns out, has been lying to her a lot about rather important things, though he's since apologized. Her stubborn nature is having a hard time accepting him (Guy B) now that she knows he's lied to her, and I'm not sure what to do since it seems that Guy B has turned out to be the jerk in the situation!
This is an informative post, if you are sure that you're topic is good for Plot Doctoring (which all of yours are) then you need to make yourselves threads. No one will come in here to help you! -Xander Moderator
I double posted something, once in my genre and once in Plot Doctoring, because I'm interested in answers that are genre specific and interested in answers from people that don't read/write that genre. If that's okay, cool. If it's not, well, please delete one of them. :)

Perhaps this isn't they best place for this, but I'm writing about a deaf girl, and I have no idea how write about communication! She uses sign language, but should I do it the normal way ("Hi there," she signed and smiled.) or some other way??
Sorry if this is the wrong place to post, if it is tell me where to go and I'm off! =)

Re: READ THIS FIRST: (and... Where did my post go?!)
I need help with developing my characters would this be the correct place to post this?
Re: READ THIS FIRST: (and... Where did my post go?!)
Yup this is the place for character development.
Or you could post in your genre forum if the character is genre specific.

Re: READ THIS FIRST: (and... Where did my post go?!)
You could try wikipedia...
Re: READ THIS FIRST: (and... Where did my post go?!)
Your best bet is the Reference Desk forum. That's where "how does XXX work" sorts of questions live.
Re: READ THIS FIRST: (and... Where did my post go?!)
Is the a place to ask if I want help naming my novel? Or is there somewhere better to go?

There is a thread for help with title naming somewhere... ahh here it is

Yes, it's common. Discussion about the urge belongs in either Coffeehouse or Nano Ate My Soul.
"How to" go about changing your genre goes in Plot Doctoring, or your new Genre Lounge
Re: READ THIS FIRST: (and... Where did my post go?!)
Is it acceptable to bump threads here if they've fallen several pages back without getting any replies?
Re: READ THIS FIRST: (and... Where did my post go?!)
Yes, that's fine. Just don't bump before it's fallen back a while. :) You may have better luck posting in a specific genre forum.

That was actually my first thought, I was just worried about it being a bit used is all
Re: READ THIS FIRST: (and... Where did my post go?!)
This can be posted in Plot Doctoring.

So if you were to bookmark a particular thread, the link would still work?
Re: READ THIS FIRST: (and... Where did my post go?!)
As long as the thread is not moved, bookmarks work until the wipe in October.
Re: READ THIS FIRST: (and... Where did my post go?!)
Okay, thank you. :D
Re: READ THIS FIRST: (and... Where did my post go?!)
This actually helped a lot . SO I guess my novel is Horror & supernatural, and Mystery, Thriller and suspense

I need some ideas for a section of my story.
One of my characters has a mafia-hired hitman after him, originally because of seeing some books or something that he wasn't supposed to see, but now I'm not so satisfied with that reason and I need a new one, any suggestions?
Re: READ THIS FIRST: (and... Where did my post go?!)
So, plot problem:
I have a woman who had a romantic interest (Guy A) that turned out to be a jerk, so she dumped him for another guy (Guy B) , who, as it turns out, has been lying to her a lot about rather important things, though he's since apologized. Her stubborn nature is having a hard time accepting him (Guy B) now that she knows he's lied to her, and I'm not sure what to do since it seems that Guy B has turned out to be the jerk in the situation!

That is a tricky one, I had to look over the forum list. Try making a thread in Writing 101, they have the technical questions like that covered.
