Prince Escapes from Royalty Help!

So I need some quick help,

my novel has a prince (or actually a noble) who tries to leave and escape the noble lifestyle to have a more rough life. I know this has been mentioned hundreds of times, dont remind me, BUT I want to know what type of reasons would a noble leave his family and rich life that maybe aren't so obvious?

thanks a lot!

Re: Prince Escapes from Royalty Help!

There are two groups of reasons that might make sense, ideological and personal ones.

The first group of reasons would cover every reason the prince could have to be opposed to this lifestyle on principle because of his political, social, philosophical and religious convictions. Perhaps he considers the political and social system he lives in unjust and refuses to continue to be part of the ruling social class, perhaps he is a member of a religion or philosophical school that promotes ascetism or at least a simple lifestyle, perhaps he considers it his duty to share the hardships of the life of the common people instead of enjoying material comforts they could never dream of.

The second group would cover anything that has nothing to do with being opposed to the sort of life he has led so far on principle, but rather with his personal choices.
They could be mostly selfless: Perhaps he is self-aware enough to know that he would make a lousy ruler because he is mainly interested in botany and not much else, while his younger sister, who cannot inherit as long as he is in the way, would be a splendid administrator of the family lands. Perhaps he feels he has to do something that can only be accomplished if he leaves (go on a quest to save the world etc.).
They might also be selfish: Perhaps he wants to escape an arranged marriage, or his duties in general, or his overbearing parents, or simply dreams of having some sort of great adventure that he imagines as so much better than the sheltered life he has led.
