Reasons for suspension from work?

I just had an idea for a thriller.
A FBI-agent is suspened from work for a longer period of time and moves to another country (from the USA to Germany) and starts teaching english at a high school for a living. I already know that she's obsessed with two people, that killed her family about 15 years ago and has been chasing them for the last years. So, I was thinking that maybe she made a mistake involving these murderers and this resulted in her suspension (like, she tried to catch them and got someone killed?).

So, I need a good reason to remove her from duty for a (long) while. Also, I don't think she'd be allowed to handle a FBI issued gun anymore, but what about a gun she bought privately? Would this affect her in any way if her employer found out that she'd been investigating a murder series without authorities from the FBI?

Also, how long can one be suspended without being fired?

-she become so obsessed that she starts slipping on her actual work (maybe someone gets killed because she didn't solve the case soon enough)
-she's become slightly mentally unstable (short tempered, mood swings, bursting into tears, seeing the killers everywhere, even when they arent there, insomnia, night terrors)
-she almost kills someone because she thinks its one of the killers

she has the right to bear arms (well i dont know about the German constitution. and if she got the gun in the US, airports would be a big no no. if worse comes to worse, she can get it in Germany using a fake ID or from a shady dealer who doesnt check IDs

depends on how close she is to her employer. if they're friends or at least respect each other, the employer might turn a blind eye or even help her. if not, yes, you could defiantly get in trouble if you work on a case when your badge has been revoked/ suspended, especially if you use the FBI data base, case files you shouldn't have, ect.

depends on what shes being suspended for. if its for mental/ physical health, probably as long as it takes for a doctor to clear her for duty. if shes being investigated herself because she messed up at work, things probably won't be so lenient

Can you move to another country when you're suspended, without pretty much saying you're quitting? My understanding is that suspension puts you in limbo. Some are still paid while on suspension, while other jobs aren't. So I can understand needing another job in the meantime as a source of income, but wouldn't it be temporary work? If it was something more permanent, it would mean you don't want that job anymore. And moving to another country seems pretty permanent.

I've never been suspended, so I'm not completely sure of the rules, so I could be wrong, but that is what I would think.

its unlikely that she would be assigned to a case involving the murder of her parents.

so if she is still "looking into it" , it is against orders, and continued investigation on her part could easily lead to her being suspended or fired (as well as mucking up the case so that the perps cannot be prosecuted and get off)

I would say she was working a kidnapping of a big wig and on her advice the family doesn't pay the ransom and the kid ends in up in a FedEx box in tiny pieces so of course her life as a FBI agent is over

I think I'm going with something similar to this. I realized that I would have less trouble with moving her to another country when she's being fired. She's a good terms with her former partner so she should be able to get important informations if she has no other way to gain them.
