I might try camping out on a spin bike at the gym during the off-hours. Can they revoke your gym membership for reasons of artistic insanity?

Though I did squeeze in a few notebook pages on the mat while waiting for yoga class to start.

Where are the weirdest places you've written in (or want to write in)?

I'm commenting from my new favorite writing place- the bathtub. Blankets? Check. Pillow? Check. Hot chocolate? Check. Good to go!

Other places I like to write: in a tree (when it's nice outside), on the roof, under my bed...yeah. :)

I like your gym idea. :D

My MC sits in a closet at one point, so I've been dragging pillows and blankets into my closet and that's working great.
A place I'd like to try writing in is the woods. I figure if I bring something to sit on, it'll provide some good inspiration.

I once spent an entire day sitting in the closet to write and I have found the woods are a great place for inspiration. Sometimes I get a little paranoid about the coyotes though; we have some coyote problems around here. I usually just write at the computer, even though all the aforementioned locations sound so much more fun.

Update on the gym... The spinning studio is a GREAT place for [noteobok] writing! Something about keeping my body in motion is great to convince my muse I'm not focused on him. Also, a darkened studio when the sun went down after 4:00, with trains going past the window and some good tunes in my ear helped me get out 1,000 words of an action sequence. So much easier to write your character running when your own legs are moving!

Also, the sauna makes a great place to write, though I wouldn't recommend it if you only write on electronic devices.

I wrote at a rehearsal for a musical this one time. It was a scene my friend and I weren't needed for, so we stepped out of the room and did a word war.
I also write in the car sometimes if someone else is driving. My laptop gets pretty cold in this weather, though.
Mine aren't that weird, but it's quite fun to write wherever you go.

Mine is probably in a cardboard box fort, with lots of blankets and pillows inside. I don't have the excuse of a young child for building it. I'm just immature enough to think it's incredibly fun, and that has led to several scenes of my darling FMC building forts with her friends.

I live out in the country, so I have satellite internet - which means I have a small download allowance before my internet goes super-slow for a day. Also, if I write at home, I get interrupted by my mom or my pets. So I've gone to several different places to write on better wifi connections:

the library (public library or the school one)

Panera

between classes backstage in the music & drama department (there's a class going on on the other side of the curtain, so I type quietly)

I have gone into the bathroom, sitting in the bath tub. Please note that I am writing on a computer, and for that reason the water was never going to be in the tub. I did have the sink on, though. I really just wanted to write and sitting up a tree wasn't working. People were still finding me and rousting me away from my story.

Umm, in the gym during gym class. We were doing fitness tests, so basically we just sat on the bench until our turn, so I got out my notebook and just wrote. It didn't work that well since everyone kept coming up to me and asking me what I was doing, so I explained I was writing a novel and then they all insisted on reading over my shoulder as I wrote. Didn't get much done. But 300 some words more than I had before. :)

I'm a boring person, so I usually just write in my notebook during school and sit in my bed and type after school. My closet is full of junk, so I wouldn't be able to sit there, but maybe if I clean it out I can...I think I just might do that. :D

Re: Weirdest places you've gone to write

That reminds me of a couple of years ago, when I began what is sort of a companion for my current story--I have various stories in progress set in the same world but with different characters, all of whom eventually become some sort of leader of their countries--anyway, I had this black notebook, and for a while I was sitting on the couch with one of my cousins, who is three years older than me. (everyone was taking turns reading my story, actually. It was kind of awesome.) Than, for a while, I was sitting next to a cousin who is a year younger than I am. It was sort of annoying, because I could tell that she was looking over my shoulder as I wrote. Later, when I told my other cousin about this, she slightly guiltily admitted that she'd been reading over my shoulder as I wrote too. But she was much sneakier about it, so I didn't mind.

Nothing very unusual for me. I've done most of my writing at my desk at home, at my desk at work or the lab bench, or the conference room in the lab. It's a wonderful room; big windows, comfy chairs, a long table.

Strangest place I can think of writing in recent memory was on a bench outside the library on a particularly nice day. Before that, it was in the park with a thermos of tea (poured into tea cups, of course) on the first nice day of spring.

Guess I need to try some more weird places to write...

Re: Weirdest places you've gone to write

Sometimes I'll write at the library, but most often, I'll write on my bed (I'm on it right now!).
Writing in my bedroom has a lot of pros and 0 cons.
Such as:
1: a nearby outlet to plug in the laptop
2:Privacy. (I can't write with people breathing down my neck)
3: Familiarity. When you're familiar with a place, you're more relaxed, which is a much easier mood to write a book in than when you're tensed.
4:Comfort: When you're in a library chair, face it, your rear end and back start to hurt after a while. But, when I'm on my bed I can sit (or lay down) however I like without worrying about a librarian coming up to me saying that I don't have proper etiqite (I know I spelled that wrong... sorry)
5:You can stay there as long as you want. I mean, libraries and coffee shops aren't exactly open all night.

I've also written in my closet once; however, even though it provided MAX privacy, it was REALLY cramped.

Oh! And I've also written:

On my way to NYC

In a parking lot behind an abondoned building

At the dining room table

In a flooded basement (MY flooded basement)

On my friend's coffee table

In the middle of class or out in the hallways

In a tree (a couple of times for a couple of hours in the spring. The view was actually nice. Then, of course, my brothers had to break all the bottom branches. So long tree writing)

On my old swingset (it got taken down a few years back)

On a cliff behind a waterfall

In a tent on a rainy night

In a museum

While waiting in line at fair

On a small hill under a bush that resembles a weeping willow

I think that's all the WEIRD places.

For the first two weeks I took the notebook to school, which resulted in me writing:

-Standing up in the pouring rain, bent double trying to lean on my knee.

-During a Science lecture on the retina. With the teacher standing beside me.

Then I took it around during the weekends too.

-Bench at 5pm, in the dark. In a trench coat. The little old ladies thought I was some flasher.
-On the bus. Every day. Whilst the chavs lean over me and snigger and make idiotic comments.

Re: Weirdest places you've gone to write

While attempting to take a break from my computer I had decided to bring a notebook with me so I could jot down those odd thoughts I sometimes get to be safe and not forget while I visited a friends work place. I got to sit in her cubicle and felt, I don't know, kind of lazy when I heard the sound of other people typing away on their desktops. So instead of relaxing and just doodling on that paper I wrote in small letters and had finished four pages front and back that I was regretting when it took me hours to type it up when I got back to my computer.

One other time, I sat at someone's kitchen table with my laptop with a ginormous bag of Halloween candy to munch on, a shot of Port, and a Jack Russel Terrier that sat at my feet and that was certain that I had much better things to be doing instead of noveling...like giving him oodles of attention.

Normally, I sit at a card table next to a window, that's sort of jammed between the wall and my bed. Thusly, I can only get up and shimmy out of my confined area when there is something important to be done. That means bathroom breaks and coffee runs. I don't really think of food...

There are also times that I speak aloud about what is supposed to be happening and it just explodes into a spoken scene that I just kick myself for because I'm nowhere near a computer, have no paper or pen to write with, or happen to be in places where I get second looks. I kind of consider this method a way of writing, just in a more cerebral 'Where is that tape recorder that I don't own?' mindset.

Other people who listen to me mutter to myself as I walk down the street, or the women in public restrooms who stand near me while we are all washing our hands and can hear me fleshing out ideas and lines over the sound of the water probably just think I'm schizophrenic!

To wrap this up- I write everywhere, weird or not! Beaches, piers, parks, parked cars, benches of any sort, as well as buses and trains.

Last night I had to write another 300 words, and I only had an hour, and three friends were waiting in the living room, so I went up the stairs, sat down on the floor in the darkness (for some reason I didn't turn the light on), crossed my legs, opened up my laptop and started to write. Right there, on the floor.
Also, I've written on my iPad on the bus to school, and (while it wasn't for NaNo, it was still writing in weird places) I once locked myself in a school bathroom to write.

Like many people I have written in the closet, although I only do that when there is company over because of spider paranoia.

I also once got about five refrigerator boxes from a friend of my mom, and turned my entire room into a pillow-and-blanket fort.

My bathroom is tiled and a lot of the time I'll write on the tiles in the shower with dry-erase marker :D

When it's not raining the roof is my favorite place

At work. I'm on a computer all day long and I usually keep an open mail in which I type ideas/paragraphs/chapters (when workload is low and inspiration is high) and I send it to my private mail when the day is over. That's the most inconspicuous way I found to NaNo all day long whenever I get a chance.

Apart from that, I write on my iPhone most of the time so I've written about everywhere I have the time to sit for a minute and think. Bus, train, stations, busstops, my bed, my bathtub, my terrace, in my kitchen, while cooking, and so on.

I love writing in corners, if I go over to a friend's house, they all think I'm weird if I run off to their bedroom or the computer room and sit in a small corner to write in my notebook. :D
I also love writing in bed, usually close to midnight with a pen that lights up.
The weirdest place was probably at church. I have so many friends there, but they all can't read my handwriting. I have been learning that's a very good thing :)

Usually, I sprawl out and type on my iPad in awkward places like the middle of the hallway of my school, or at the foot of the stairs, and I've had people trip over me and step on my hands as I reach for a thesaurus or dictionary.

My French teacher was very amused as I scribbled out words in her class. XD

Well, I'm not sure if this is what the OP meant, but I always write on my iPhone, which is a weird place to write I guess- I get the idea its far more common than I think it is. If I have a few moments and the inspiration, I can just whip out the phone. Top relatively weird places I've written: subway, parking lot, locker room, and taxi cab.

Writing in class isn't so weird, neither is waiting for PE to start...or in the living room or on the couch or sprawled out on my bedroom floor, actually on my bed...I've written at the lunch tables and in study hall and so on. I don't write in very creative places, though, this year and last I attended a school play that's on during November and wrote at intermission both times, and afterwards when you get to say hi to the cast. And last year, I wrote on my iPod Touch a lot, walking around the school between classes. And I used to eat lunch in this neat little nook in the lunch area, so I would write there.

Re: Weirdest places you've gone to write

Well, I downloaded my novel into my Android phone and took it to work, and whenever I got the chance, I'd tap out a few words or sentences (especially during lunch break!) and managed a solid 500 words that way to add to my word count. It made formatting a bit difficult though, that's for sure.

But that really doesn't hold a candle to some of these stories. If I wasn't so damn sick, I'd definitely try some of these ideas...but looks like my bed is going to be the only place I write from in the foreseeable future.

Other places I write:

My bed, with my laptop balanced on one hip (don't ask)
My desk
The kitchen counter
The living room chair
An airplane
WashU library (because if anyone lives in/around St. Louis and has yet to go to WashU's main library...second and third floor has the most AMAZING chairs ever. So comfortable and such a good place to write. I banged out 3000 words in 2 hours sitting in those chairs)
A college lecture about Psychology
Couch in sister's dorm room
Starbucks café in the mall

None of those are particularly inspiring. Haha. Oh well...back to writing!

I write on the schoolbus, since I am either at school or tennis practice for my whole day. If I don't feel like writing on the bus, I write on a bench at the tennis courts waiting for my practice to start. The bus seems to work better, though, because I write better when I am incredibly bored, and am not distracted with any other fascinating parts of the world around me.

I wrote in class last year... but then I lost my notebook and it showed up later at the front of my homeroom (I thought someone stole it from my locker) it was such a bad novel and I was really embarrased so I haven't attempted to write during school this year... But I did type for three+ hours in the car to my Uncle's house for Thanksgiving. My sister kept trying to see what I was writing until I told her to stop... I'm very self-concious about my writing :/ I usually write at the kitchen table though, in one of the comfortable leathery chairs, and I'll use my mom's special Bose headphones to block everyone else out while I type.

So when I visited they didn't have internet, and I spent most of the time helping them...but at one point I squirreled myself away upstairs, in one of the unfinished bedrooms that was full of boxes and other miscellaneous stuff.
So there's this little closet in the back of the Advanced English teacher's room at my old school. I took my laptop back there for an hour and a half after school was out and wrote the entire time. It was good because there's no internet access there, therefore no distractions.

A little strange; I was in my bedroom, but inspiration struck while in the splits. I of course grabbed my laptop off the floor where I had discarded it and went to work, still in the splits... :)

Heh, I did something similar today. Except that it was already raining before I went outside into the woods, and it only got worse the longer I stayed. My hands started to freeze, and the water made the ink run, so I was forced to go back inside. (I write better outside with a notebook during the day for some odd reason. At night, though, I write best in bed with my laptop.)

Re: Weirdest places you've gone to write

So far during NaNo, my writing has taken place primarily in bed, at a desk before class, or at a table. The weirdest place would probably just be the car, at around 11:00 PM (and I still hit my daily word count!). However, I've written in a lot of weird places in the past. I've taken notebooks along on backpacking trips, so I've written a few days' walk from civilization on the side of a mountain in a tent. I've also written in trees, on top of boulders, in hammocks, on balcony railings (can you tell I like heights?), on beaches, on boats, leaning against my dog, and on and on. Basically, you name it, I've written there. As a part of a photo project my mom was doing, I have also read on top of a horse and while scuba diving.

Do you mean during NaNo, or just in general?

During NaNo, my writing places have actually been rather tame: The office during down time, on a beanbag chair in my creative space room at home, on the couch at home, at various and sundry Starbuck's/coffee houses around town, and at Panera.

I tried writing at McDonald's once, because it was late at night on a Sunday and it was the only place with coffee and Internet (besides home) that was open, but .... yeah .... didn't work out so well. x_x;;;;

The weirdest place I've written (or tried to write) period was on a sleeper bus in China. (Remember the bus with beds from Harry Potter? Remove the magic aspect, pack in a few more beds, and it's that exactly.)

I got a few sentences on my Palm TX in a railway station waiting room the other week, but most of my writing this NaNo has just been at home. A few years ago during a different writing challenge, I found I could write standing in the boarding line for a SouthWest flight at LAX (also on the trusty Palm). I sometimes used to write in a notebook while standing in the aisle of a crowded InterCity train, but I was much younger then (and thought erasable ballpoint pens were the best thing ever).

Re: Weirdest places you've gone to write

I haven't written in many odd places during NaNo. (Except for on a plane, which I finished my novel on!) But regularly I've written all over the place. My favorite, though, was sitting on a rock in the Grand Canyon. Two summers ago my family and I went river rafting and as part of it I decided to go sit on a rock three feet out in the water off where we were camping to write.

There's a nature reserve just down the road from work, so I sometimes go and sit on the riverbank to write, trying not to let the ducks see me running away from them. And there was one day when, with one thing after another, I was in church for twelve hours, so I took my laptop and did little bits of writing in the gaps. (By this last, I really mean "played a lot of Solitaire".)

:D I don't really have too many weird places to write. The two weirdest were in a car on a notebook and sitting on the sidewalk outside of my friends apartment on my phone. She doesn't allow smoking in her apartment, so I had no choice. :)

But, my regular writing spot has kind of gotten weird in the last few days. I live in a house with no central heat and air, so when it gets cold, we have a wood burning heater to warm the house up. My computer is RIGHT BESIDE it. I'm usually sitting there, in a tank top and shorts, sweating my butt off with it being a little over freezing outside. I serious took my temperature last night and it said 100.1F because I was getting so heated. Maybe I'll knock off some pounds from sweating so much. XD

I like to sequester myself in my bathtub. I will close and lock the door, pull the shower curtain across the length of the tub, as if I were going to actually have a real bath, have some music thing, like my ipad or ipod sitting on the edge with my head phones on. I usually also place a bunch of pillows in there pre-emptively, to make it more comfortable, which made it awfully convenient that I have been living by me lonesome self for this month of novelling. I feel the most alone with my novel in there. the bathroom is a place where you have your one on one time. Be it in the shower, or while you are doing your hair, or even sitting on the toilet, it is a precious, solemnn place. That is where I get most of my constructive writing accomplished.

Re: Weirdest places you've gone to write

Not exactly a 'place' per se, but during November/December (my novel was longer than expected), not long before Christmas, I was seriously behind on words, and my dear mother decided that she was going to drag us out for a whole day.
Guess who not only grabbed the laptop but managed to make a three-hour charge last twice that long? :D
There was honestly something like 20 minutes of charge left by the time we got home, but I would have gotten at least 5k done, if not twice that.

And then, around about the same time, my sister had a beach day that my mum went to help out with. I sat in the boot of the car, watching all these tiny little pre-teen kids run around on the beach while I was typing.

Of course, special mention goes out to when I was sitting in the car, whilst mum was driving through the middle of West Auckland, typing and trying to sing along to the radio AND hold a conversation at the same time :P

I also moved bedrooms recently, and although I'm one-week-on one-week-off with my parents, I might just camp out in the cupboard of my new room all month for NaNo this year. I can tell my dad I want to study for exams or something, seeing as my school's moved everything to the internet this year anyway :P (we haven't had internet at my dad's place since early 2009, you see)
