The New NaNo for the New and the Insane

Hello again!

I have updated and added new sections to NaNo for the New and the Insane! You can now find it on the Smashwords site, which offers formats for all major ebook readers, plus on-line, pdf, rtf (which works with almost any word processor like Word and Open Office) and a couple stripped down text versions as well. Now you can have the book on your Nook, Kindle, Sony Reader, Kobo and more. As soon as the book is reviewed, it will also turn up for the iPad and more.

And yes, the book is still free!

I wrote this book a few years ago and some of the functions of the NaNo boards have since changed. Overall, however, the book still offers a lot of helpful hints. Download it early so you have time to read it before November! I hope you find it helpful!

The book also includes the Woodle Pooves story (Author Vs. Character), which I originally wrote for the NaNo boards many years ago. (It has apparently become my most popular story, since it's the one I hear the most about!)
You can download your free copy from here:

I LOVE this book and remember it fondly from my first Nano back in '07. It's thrilling to have it in a format I can load on my Kindle now.

Thank you Lazette for updating it and making it compatible with ereaders!

To anyone who needs a little help getting going, good advice on various parts of the process, then this is the book for you. Among other things, the Phase Outline that she mentioned helped me win my first Nano and I still use it on occasion. It's a good flexible outline for those who don't like to outline.

Re: The New NaNo for the New and the Insane

Thank you for posting this again this year! My only thought would be that a table of contents in the actual book would be nice. (Maybe there was one and I missed it.) It all just kind of flows and flows with no real clear breaks for chapters so finding things can be a little difficult.

I'll look at a clickable TOC in the new version, but to be honest it's not going to happen with this year's version. I'm fighting just to get my outline done for NaNo this year, along with a huge amount of other work. Ack.

Re: The New NaNo for the New and the Insane

It's annoying. XD

Oh, haven't managed to say this in past years, but here it is now:

While I don't read this religiously every year (it tends to become a prime form of procrastination), I do love rereading the "important" bits (all the things I need help with THIS year).

I used the phase outline to great success last year (though I have yet to use it perfectly for an entire novel: the first time I tried it I had 20-30 words per phase word. that was torture, but it forced me to describe things. Which is good.).

And I really enjoyed the new articles! Expanding Avenues of Inspiration and Worst Case Scenario were very helpful. And I'll definitely be using #write100 quite a lot this NaNo, as I'll probably only have sporadic times to write for the next year +. (traveling the woooorld for 14 months, starting this Sunday.) Speaking of which, I should go practice.

The Phase Outline has helped me avoid my bad habit of writing the 'fun' scenes and skipping the rest of the story. I now have a much better chance of completing something, even with it reaches 150 to 200K. (I write long. For me a 'short' story clocks in at 50K, and that is limiting things to a single POV and a simple plot line.)

I just read the original last week, probably a day or two before you posted this, and it's already super helpful. Thanks for the updates! I've only done nano once before and didn't finish (approx 42k). I've also never done an outline, just wrote as it came to me, so I'm hoping that doing the phase outline (or rather my version of it) will help me complete the 50k this year.

The only question is, what do I do if I don't complete the outline in time? I'm not positive that I will, but I'm afraid without it I'll lose focus...

Right down the main points of the outline from start to finish and then go back and fill in the extra stuff. That way you're certain to have at least a brief outline to work with and if you have time, you can fill in more of the fun little things between the big events.

The phase outline method helped me win in 2008, I think. I don't remember exactly what I pulled from it, but I definitely remember reading about. I just had a short list of character descriptions and some scenes on a half sheet of paper to keep me somewhat on track, but it was extremely helpful. A roundabout way of saying thank you for this book, I guess. :)

Re: The New NaNo for the New and the Insane

So, I downloaded this, figuring I would just read it on and off while I finalized my outline. Maybe read it when I got stuck during my writing and needed a break if I didn't finish before then.

Well... That's not what happened.

This book hooked me from the start! I love the way you write, and the combination of your wit and general knowledge was really helpful and inspiring. I read the entire thing in one sitting, and didn't even realize it had gotten dark until I finished. I will definitely be recommending this to other writers, whether or not they're Nano participants.

Also, your extras at the end, "The Angst of Hero Naming" and "Author versus Character", had me laughing so hard that the usually noisy neighbors were suspiciously quiet.

Thank you for writing this! I definitely enjoyed it, and will be using your tips in the future.

Hey,

So I downloaded your book for the kindle and started reading it tonight. I got only so far as to the part where you talk about outlining before I was throwing down my kindle to grab the stuff I already have written down to continue planning my novel. It was SO MOTIVATING! Thanks! :) Because I started reading this tonight and started planning, I've fixed my plot problem where I couldn't decide just exactly what direction my book was going to go in; which idea was going to happen. Now they both are. Two meshed into one to make the truly awesome. Now I have one hybrid plot and it's WAY better! With this figured out, I can continue planning how my novel is going to go and not worry about what it's REALLY about. Can't wait to read more of Nano for the New and the Insane to help my insanity prosper!!...To bed for now though.

...This might deserve a shoutout! ;) I'm so excited!

-Stacy

P.S, you're awesome, and thanks for writing it :) (and making it available for all to read).

Then you decide why you want to write it for yourself. Really, from the start you have to write some story you want to tell, and publication is only an added bonus for those who seek it. Besides, there is always the self publishing option, unless you think the reason others won't publish it is because of legal matters.

Hi! I'm new to NaNo and long time insane, so this must be the place for me. This is my very first year to try to write something. I already know that what I've banged out is far from perfect, but I'm resisting the urge for quality until AFTER NaNo. Instead of getting lost in the details and making it perfect, I really am just going to get it DONE! Nobody will touch this thing with a ten foot pole, but I'll have the time to revise, edit, rewrite and make it into something. That beautiful gemstone won't magically appear. I need the diamond in the rough to carve on first. I'm going to have that, or at least really try. (yeah I say that as I browse NaNo forums instead of getting anything written!)

Re: The New NaNo for the New and the Insane

Rubyfruit, writing a novel takes practice to improve your skills. Even if you know the first five you write will never be touched by any publisher ever, the writing of them will hone your skills for the sixth that will. Not to mention the fact that there is always self publishing out there. But really if you're pushing yourself for a deadline like NaNo then you have to do it because you like to write and you want to see what you can do. If you aren't even coming close to having fun then why bother?

Re: The New NaNo for the New and the Insane

If you are confident in your work and are just dubious as to which publisher, if any will take your work on, then the alternative is self publishing. I am not talking vanity publishers here, but total self publishing. There are now loads of sites that are available for self publishing available on the internet. Amazon, Smashwords, Lulu are a few that come to mind. Chech out the sites and read their respective admission requirements, then decide if you wish to procede along the road of self discovery. Book publishers are tightening their belts and printing less new writers each year. the Internet may be the only way for some new publishers to get a foot in the door. One online publisher, just recently gained a $2 million advance based on her online sales using Amazon. Give it a go, what have you got to loose.

I read this when I was still working on my outline and while my outline lays unfinished, reading this REALLY helped me battle the challenges I faced on the first day of writing - mainly "just keep going, don't worry".

I loved the "phase" strategy. I wrote out the first four "phases" of my novel prior to day 1 and each of them turned out 2,000 words long in actual writing.

Thanks for this, Lizette! Very generous of you. I inconveniently "lost" my copy of "No Plot? No Problem?" that I read every year and having your book is more than filling in the void.

I love the Phase Outlining concept. I'd been doing something similar (creating clever chapter "titles") but didn't move it to the next level like you explained was possible. I like the capturing of the idea quickly and allowing you to create a map of where to go next. It may save this year's NaNo from oblivion.

Thank you!

Well it's me again :)
Man I'm in a Nano spree these days. First time I ever try, and so glad I did.

I've also managed to read 70% of your book in a day, and squeeze 16k of my nano too! (16k since the 3rd Nov., obviously not in a day hehehee!). I'm not even sure how my book will end yet, but I'm beginning to hint it.

Your book is great Zette, I love it. And I couldn't find a better read for these days either, thumbs up, big thanks again B)

I hope everyone has had fun so far. I cn't believe we're close to the half way point already!

NaNo for the New and the Insane has reached 3000 downloads at Smashwords. It would be nice if a few of you would do a review for it and help draw attention to my work there in general. Thanks to anyone who jumps in with a few words and/or rating!

Just wanted to add my thanks. Phase outlining is basically what got me to 50k in less than two weeks as a NaNo newbie this year. On days when I was working from my notes, 2k or more in an hour wasn't unusual. If I didn't have notes, 1k in an hour was tough!

So thank you for the idea!

You can edit or not edit whenever you want. NaNoWriMo is simply about writing and nothing more. No one will ever see the work except for you, unless you share it with others. So editing is your choice. I will not be editing for a few months, in fact. The longer the work can sit, the better the editing goes because you are no longer caught up in what you think you wrote.

So write and have fun!
