Females! Things Found In Your Room.

This question is for the gals. I'm writing a scene where my MMC visits my MFC's bedroom for the first time and I want to describe it as being a very non-typical female room. So that begs the question, what does a typical female bedroom look like?

In your room..
..what things are you proud of?
..what are your favorite things?
..what could you not be without?
..what color(s) are on your walls?
..etc?

FYI my MFC is in her early twenties.

Re: Females! Things Found In Your Room.

My walls are pink. Ugh, I hate that, but it'd be too much work to change it. I have a table covered in books, a nightstand with books, a dresser covered in books, some piles of clothes covered in books, a chest of drawers with (among other things) books and some books on my bookshelf. I have a lot of clutter from when I was a kid. Toys, stuffed animals and whatnot.

I'm not really proud of my room. I don't care about it. It's just a place to put things.

But what's on my walls and what little I'm even vaguely proud of pretty much exactly coincide, except for the miniature Christmas wreath (which is there year-round). I'm not proud of that. But I am proud of the drawing of someone in a sweatshirt looking emo (I did it while watching a play), the old and not so great drawing of one of my original characters (it represents a step forward in my style, but I've gone farther since), the first math problem of any significance I solved all by myself (disproving-- well into my teens-- the strong version of the assertion that "I can't do math")... I also once taped up a paper with goals I wanted to do (be charismatic, learn to understand math, etc.-- not great goals). I never did anything more with that. It didn't give me a good roadmap. But I never took it down. Oh, and some more things on my walls that aren't things I'm proud of would be two ribbons and two (or three?) locks of my hair.

I do usually keep my DS and GBA (and sometimes my PSP) in there when not using them, along with the chargers, and from one of the doors I hung all my DS games.

There are pens, sometimes pencils, colored pencils, notebooks, old diaries, etc.

I suspect my room may actually be non-typical. It will be fun to see the other responses.

Re: Females! Things Found In Your Room.

I am not typical in this regard...but maybe it'll give you some ideas anyway.

A minibass and an acoustic guitar in stands. I can't play guitar, and it's a right-handed guitar besides (I'm lefty), and I have a full-size bass, so both of these lovely instruments get used as hat racks. I hang my fedoras on the tuning keys :) There is a dresser, which has an earring stand on it, but I'm too lazy to put the earrings back in after I wear them, so it's mostly empty and there's a large pile of earrings, tangled necklaces, bracelets, charms, etc. in the little bin underneath and on the dresser's surface. There is also usually a random sock, a ticket to some concert I went to quite awhile ago, a wristband for a hospital lab, a couple marbles with dinosaurs on them, a stub of candle way too short to burn, a voting sticker (though I'm too young to vote), etc.

The walls are painted black with glow in the dark stars stuck to them. There are some posters for Green Day, the Clash, and Harry Potter stuck above the bed. There's a cardboard dragon model hanging from the ceiling. There are sneakers and boots on the floor, along with the papers I use to stuff the boots so they keep their shape. There are two little ottomans shaped like turtles (one was defective, so the company sent another free), with my sister's beloved teddy bear from when she was little and my beloved doll sitting on them. There's a small trunk pushed up underneath the windowsill and the plant stand, which has a few felt geckos and a handmade felt pony as well as the potted orange and ivy plants. There's a pachinko machine at the end of my bed. It's a loft bed; I sleep on the top, and the bottom usually has an acoustic bass and at least one pile of clean laundry I will eventually get around to putting away. There's a closet mirror in the doorway of my closet, which doesn't actually have a door, oh, and there's a bead curtain in my doorway.

Hope some of that was useful!

I doubt I'm typical, and just moved in October, but I have:
Bed (takes up half the room. it's a small room) with pillows, duvet, fleece blanket, and a couple stuffed animals from my childhood
chair, with pillow on it (and usually some laundry)
writing desk (currently covered in basket of nail polish bottles, hair elastic/brush/etc box, pens, etc)
bureau, with books on it (bookshelves not yet hung), jewelry box, and other random stuff
2 paintings
3 family pictures
wreath with many, many family pictures clipped to it
blank lavender walls that are waiting for things to be hung on them
dark purple curtains
storage cube nightstand with laptop &amp; ipad &amp; lamp
closet, with clothes, boxes to be unpacked, and laundry

My walls are probably not that typical either because they are white (well, that's possibly not uncommon *lol*) but the posters on the are a) Deep Space Nine and b) a photo of Santorini. The rest might be somewhat more typical because there is my computer with monitor, printer and loudspeakers, tons and tons of CDs, books and manga and the space on the shelf between manga and the manga/anime/game figures (no, I'm not an otaku but I just love these things *lol*) is covered in cosmetics (mainly lipstick, eye shadow and nail polish in shades of silver, green and blue) and jewellery (nothing expensive. Most girl from what I know wouldn't have expensive jewellery lying around, only the things they wear every day).

Re: Females! Things Found In Your Room.

I share my room with my sister, although neither of us use it much anymore since we left for college.

- The half of the walls are light yellow and half are white. We were in the process of painting them all a soft, light colored yellow years ago and never finished. It actually isn't that noticeable though.
- Two bookshelves.
- Large comfy chair next to one bookshelf.
- A number of books stacked on the small coffee table next to the chair.
- A light by the chair
- My sister's drawings and paintings on the wall
- Small, electric piano
- Two antique dressers (my mom likes to collect antiques) where we keep our clothes
- old trunk (my mom again)
- antique clocks - my mom's
- some beanie babies and stuffed animals
- I am into horses so there are horse head bookends, a horse table light, horse carvings, and the like since I seem to keep getting those kinds of things as gifts
- ribbons from horse shows
- My sister keeps a bunch of her lotions and other things on top of the bookshelf by the door because we have a full body mirror on the door
- bunk bed
- glow in the dark stars stuck to the ceiling
- 2.5 gallon fish tank on the bookshelf when I'm home
- A blue carpet. We didn't pick that color and I don't particularly like it but that is just what it was when we got the house.

I'm not really that proud of my room mostly because my sister is messier than me and keeps too much stuff and my mom puts her antiques and other crap in the room. It is too cluttered for my taste. My ideal way to have the room would just be the bed, a dresser, the two bookshelves, the piano, the chair, some of the stuffed animals, and some of the horse stuff.

For reference, I am twenty and my sister is eighteen.

Mine has the bed, no nightstands, a table (not a desk), computer, printer, and boxes. Yea... still moving in from 2 years ago :P

I also have a mini-refrigerator (4' tall) that's unplugged, and used for storage (bought it years ago).

The bedroom also has a wet bar in it. I have a few candles on it, and a hair straightener left out on top of the counter.

Is there even such a thing as a typical girl's room? ;)

In my room (that is, my entire apartment... theres only this one room, plus kitchen and bathroom, both about as large as a broom cupboard -.-), the walls are painted beige, red and orange (yes, I live in a furnace and I like it :) ), with gold-and-orange edging. One wall is covered with bookshelves, another with some cheap Ikea shelves (substitues for a dresser, there's no room for one...). I've got a TV, a DVD player, gaming consoles, lots of DVDs (movies, TV series and concerts), about a dozen dictionaries (1x French, 1x Spanish, 2x English, 1x Gaelic, 2x Finnish, and several German dictionaries for spelling, synonyms, foreign words etc.). There's video games galore, anything from survival horror to strategy - you name it, I have it. I also have an exercise bike which I use far too seldom. On my desk there is my computer, a stoneware jug from Spain with a matching cup, some candles, stray jewelry that didn't make it back into the chest, a CD with French lectures, and some cute plastic flowers my mom gave me because I just can't keep my plants alive...

...

Huh. That's way more stuff than I actually need ô.O

I don't know about anything that I'm proud of but I call tell you what's in it a bit.

My room is super small so my walls are white to make it look bigger. I have a blue radiator and bedding and door though.

On my walls
- NaNoWriMo poster
- Plot Bunny print
- Old birthday card from Nana with the quote "Go confidentially in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you've imagined"
- Print of Times Square in black and white with the yellow taxis.
- Small The Dark Knight Rises poster
- Postcards from friends when they've gone on holiday
- Self-taken photograph of John Barrowman and a concert ticket which he signed
- Photograph of me holding a falcon
- Photograph of my sister and I when we were really young playing on a beach together in a gold painted frame.
- Advent calendar (currently...)

On my only shelf is:
- Jack Skellington doll
- Sally doll
- Zero plush
- Digital photograph frame
- Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Megazord figure
- "Poet Tree" incense burner

So my room is pretty standard and a bit random, really!

In the corner is a green beanbag with all my laptop wires on it. And the bedding is green. And I'm the girl who has so many stuffed animals they fill the bed and overflow. I have a bookshelf along one of the walls that's filled with books, journals, CDs, and little trinkets I've collected, and more stuffed animals along the top.

Re: Females! Things Found In Your Room.

I kinda have three rooms: my homestay room in Spain (which I can't decorate much), my dorm room (which I can decorate in non-permanent ways) and my room in my parents' house (which I can do whatever I want, within reason.)

Walls in the homestay room I really like. Three walls are soft yellow, and the fourth is blue with yellow sponge spots (don't know what those are called) that kind of look like clouds in a sky. It's really pretty. I painted my own room a light green, my favorite color. (Actually my favorite color is a bit darker, but that wouldn't work well for a room.)

In my parents' house, I have all my NaNo certificates up. On the corkboard in my homestay place, I have a program for a dance performance I did. My dorm also has a corkboard, and I hung up a letter I got from a client at work thanking me for what I was doing, a thank-you card from the kids I volunteer with, etc. These are my big "pride" things. I also have various postcards in each room, and some useful stuff like bus maps, my class schedule, reminders (pick up milk, you have a meeting today), to-do lists, etc. Both my dorm room and my homestay place have inspirational quotes hung up.

I always have a shelf set aside for tea and a drawer in my desk set aside for snacks. My desk is often by a window, but never facing one, and in both my dorm room and my homestay room I have a corkboard to hang stuff up behind my computer while I'm doing homework.

My dorm room has photos of my friends hung up all over the wall, mostly friends who don't go to school with me. The shelves in my homestay room are lined with cards and letters from home, presents I need to bring back, etc. I also have some posters in each room. Kittens in my parents' house, COEXIST in my dorm room and a women's liberation poster I bought from a street vendor in Morocco in my homestay. (I'm bringing that to my dorm when I leave.) That's one of my favorite things.

I definitely couldn't be without my stuffed bear, Watson. My friend knitted him for me and he's my best friend. In my dorm, I couldn't be without my electric kettle, which allows me to make tea or soup or oatmeal or whatever without leaving the warmth of my room. I also love the radiator in my homestay room, which sadly I cannot bring with me. Hand sanitizer is a must.

I also have a drawer specifically for papers, a place that isn't too obvious to put my medicine, a place to keep money, a shelf for my makeup (which is actually in the bathroom in my homestay room) and usually one spot in my closet for out-of-season clothes just in case of an unseasonable day. All my school supplies must be in easy reach of my desk. PJs go under the pillow, bed is always made. A mirror is a must-have. Basic convenience stuff, not too complicated.

A lot of things from when I was a kid - i.e., unicorns <em>everywhere</em>, as well as a goodly assortment of stuffed animals.
My medals from Forensics, which I am extremely proud of.
A few mediocre drawings by me, as well as some masterful ones done by my friends.
Photos.
A large, maybe 4 feet wide and 3 feet tall, piece of white cardboard with a number of brightly colored sticky notes with snippets about plot or characters scrawled on them.
Notebooks, everywhere.
Clutter.
Clothes all over the floor.
Books.
A music stand.
And not a single writing implement.

Re: Females! Things Found In Your Room.

I resent the idea of a "typical girl's room." I don't think there is such a thing.

Anyhow, in my room you'll find a mess of things, such as:
-ribbons from horse shows
-Dallas Cowboys football memorabilia (from when they were actually good, dammit!)
-signed posters from various rock bands
-a ridiculous amount of photographs of me and my horse
-a ridiculous amount of books
-clothes... everywhere
-hay. Heh, it comes home with me from the barn... there's hay all over my house.
-assortments of various equine products, brushes, hoofpicks, a few bits, a halter, several pairs of horseshoes, a handful of horse treats, showsheen, half a bridle, a broken stirrup leather, a stud-kit (for studs on horseshoes, not... stallion studs), vet wrap, half a bottle of iodine, leather cleaner, two ziplock bags full of grain, a pair of spurs, and a bunch of other random horse things.
-notebooks and loose-leaf paper that is never quite where it belongs
-videogames and movies all over the place
-my bed and desk, which are always covered with so much crap I can barely use them for their intended purposes
-pens, everywhere
-a collection of hunting knives
-two pocket watches and a broken clock
-and a bunch of random trinkets

My walls are neon pink and neon green, and when I say neon I mean <em>neon.</em> My brother hasn't been able to go into my room since I painted it because the colors give him headaches. They're my cross-country colors.

Yeah, I began to realize after reading through people's responses that really isn't such a thing as a "typical girl's room." I wish there were an edit button.

My train of thought before posting was that I wanted my MFC to have a room that doesn't have the obvious tells of belonging to a woman. So I tried to brainstorm about what those tells were, and couldn't come up with anything besides: vanity, and stuffed animals.

Now I realize what I really wanted to know was what sort of unique, maybe even quirky things people had in their rooms, and on their walls. (You know, aside from the usual bed and closet) Like, someone mentioned a 1920's typewriter, and another mentioned a Spanish stoneware jug. Exactly what I was looking for!

Thank you to everyone who has replied, I definitely have some inspiration for my mfc's room now! :D

Re: Females! Things Found In Your Room.

..what things are you proud of?
The pictures on the walls that I drew! And the walls, because I painted them myself, and the window because I fixed that up myself as well. So basically everything I made myself, I guess!

..what are your favorite things?
My books - I have over 200 books in my room, in two bookshelves and stacked on top of my other furniture. My art supplies. My computer. My katana, which stands beside my bed, ready for action just in case. And the fairy lights I strung up and use more than my proper lights because they give such a cool mood to the place!

..what could you not be without?
Uh, most of it. Mostly all my art stuff, my computer, my notebooks. Well, and my bed, I guess that's important.

..what color(s) are on your walls?
Mostly white, but... okay, it's upstairs, so the roof is slanted, and so two of the walls are only up to about my waist before they slant into ceiling. Those two walls are purple. And the carpet is a greyish-beige kind of colour, not that you can see much of it.

..etc?
It's quite zombie-proof! It doesn't have a proper door, but a TRAP door in the middle of the floor, and the stairs leading up are more like a ladder really. The stairs are fitted but not attached, so you could kick them down with enough effort. Then I figure I could pile furniture on the door, and they'd never get it open. And to defend myself, I have the katana, and there's a bow and some arrows standing beside the wardrobe as well so I could shoot them through the window.

Not that I put a lot of thought into this.

I don't have a TV or a dresser or anything like that. I do have a mirror though. There's a doll's house in one corner, which I got for my 6th birthday (I think). And I have a load of decorative things, lots of dreamcatchers hanging in various places, a wind chime, seashells, little souvenirs from Paris and Amsterdam, pretty things like that. And lots of mess on the ground. I think that's pretty much it!

Hmm I think most of the things posted so far fall under "individual taste", but here are some things I not only have, but pretty much all of the gals I know (to some degree or another) have as well:

-Pillows...fact is, most gals like pillows. Maybe that's just me though...

-Jewelry of some form.

-If you have recently gotten a gift from Tiffany's, Coach, ect. you will usually see the box/wrapper/bad/slash item proudly displayed. My best friend has slowly amassed this corner chalk full of her expensive boxes, I don't think she will ever get rid of them.

-Bras, lets face it, like guys our stuff ends up everywhere. Mine hang on a coat rack, I know, I'm weird.

-Photos

-Sentimental items

-Magazines, (Cosmo, InStyle, Glamour) almost every girl has her stash even if she denies reading that sort of thing.

-Odd bits of makeup

I have my stuff spread out over a whole apartment now, but here's what was in my room when I was still living with my mum:

In your room..
..what things are you proud of?
- the bookcase I built from scratch, all by myself
- come to think of it, my desk too - also built that myself
- group pictures from the meetings with a group of online friends

..what are your favorite things?
- one transparent plastic bin under my bed containing an axe, two sickles and the rusty remains of three WW2 pistols we found buried in the garden
- all four Hogwarts house banners hanging on my walls, hand-painted on silk scarves
- the lamp my dad carved out of a hollow tree trunk
- a picture frame with a cute picture of my younger brothers. Well, picture frame... you know when you cut a large branch off a tree, the bark grows over the cut? Someone cut off that circle of bark, and I turned it into a picture frame

..what could you not be without?
- bookcases (there were four of them)
- my houseplants (I had several dozen crammed into a room of about 3x4 m)
- mosquito net around the bed, because I love sleeping with the window open

I really missed having a hammock in my room, but there was just no room for it.

..what color(s) are on your walls?
two green, two yellow.

..etc? Well, the nececessary furniture - bed (a little higher than normal, for extra storage space), desk and chair, bookcases. And a makeshift sofa made out of a guest matress and a sheepskin. <em>No</em>mirror. <em>No</em> makeup. I still don't even own such things.

Re: Females! Things Found In Your Room.

..what things are you proud of?
The fact that my room has a ceiling, which it didn't for about six months this year.
A piano on one wall, which seems to impress visitors.

..what are your favorite things?
I think I get too used to my room to have 'favourite' things in it...

..what could you not be without?
Computer - although that's often a laptop which is somewhere around the house.
Piano, violin and guitar, most of which reside in my room most of the time.
A huge store of notebooks, which lives in one of the cupboards.
Bookshelf with everything from the Bible to Little Women to A Complete Guide to Middle Earth.
Music collection (sheet music, enough to cover the whole top of the piano, plus extra cupboards)

..what color(s) are on your walls?
Pale purple, and recently painted.

..etc?
My room is usually a complete mess, which I'm not particularly proud of. Also, as an example, right now there's a mattress on the middle of my floor, because my best friend slept over about a week ago and I haven't picked it up yet. There's also a lot of stuff lying around such as clothes, bags (handbags, backpacks etc.), books and also nailpolish, moisturiser etc. I never wear nailpolish, or use moisturiser, so I think these things just sort of appear because they know they should be in a teenage girl's bedroom. (I'm 18, by the way.)

Re: Females! Things Found In Your Room.

In my early twenties the walls of my room were coffee coloured and the floor and furniture were dark, dark wood.

I had thick red velvet curtains hanging from a black wrought iron rail, and the same colour velvet lining the insides of my book cases.

I had four Venetian carnival masks (chosen myself from shops in Venice) hanging on the wall between my two book cases and beneath them a battered brown leather sofa with a beige and chocolate afghan thrown on it. No cushions on the sofa though - I frigging hate cushions with a passion, especially stupid fiddly over-decorated little ones that don't actually do anything except take up space on the sofa.

My bed was made up with plain white linen, and had no header or footer - though I would have loved a big four poster or canopied princessy bed - instead I had a big batik banner of a chinese dragon where a headboard would have gone.

I had no visible mirror (inside the wardrobe) and no vanity. Just two book cases, big walk in wardrobe, big chest of drawers, my bed and sofa.

I'm not huge on keeping knick-knacky bits, so what I do have, I really like - I collect boxes though, usually finely carved wood, hammered metals, tooled leather - beautiful and useful for putting things in. I also had a soapstone mother and child carving from Zimbabwe which I love, and a lucky bamboo plant which is about the only thing that survived my plant-murdering ways.

I miss that room.

Now I'm married and not in my twenties anymore. But fortunately husband and I have very similar taste in furnishings, and the dark wood furniture, wooden floors, plain white linens and a ban on detestable cushions remains true. But the walls are white rather than coffee coloured, and the books, masks, boxes and scupture live in the lounges. Our bedroom is very uncluttered.

Re: Females! Things Found In Your Room.

Firstly, can I say that people's rooms are individual as much as people are! I hate being stereotyped as what a 'twenty-something female' would have.

..what things are you proud of?

Um... Nothing? My room is a disaster area. No, seriously though, it's pretty messy. I have a lot of hobbies and there's a lot of junk in my room, mostly art and craft materials in boxes. I have a desk, a bedside table and a horrible patterned carpet. My clothes are in two chests of drawers and a huge built in wardrobe (the other wardrobe is filled with yet more art materials. I have a lot of toys from childhood, and a lot that I bought when I was far too old for toys. I always have a pile of books and a bottle of water by my bed. I don't have a lot of cosmetics: I don't wear make up and my hair is short and ignored. I have a bottle of coconut moisturiser (because I love the smell of coconut) and some toothpaste (because I can't sleep if I haven't brushed my teeth so I need a spare tube at all times!). I have a lot of books, many left over from childhood, and a shelf of... Just things, knick-knacks... stuff collected throughout my life. I don't have a TV or computer in my room because I only really go in my room to sleep or get something. I spend the rest of my time downstairs. There's some boxes of DVDs too.

..what are your favorite things?

All my toys and art materials! I have no attention span so I'm constantly fiddling with something, making something or decorating something.

..what could you not be without?

My bed. I'm inherently lazy and I love laying in bed.

..what color(s) are on your walls?

Okay, here's the weirdest part: My walls are a painting. My mum told me to paint my room and wasn't more specific so my bedroom walls are a cove overlooking the sea. There's a distant island with a lighthouse on it, a tiny pebbelled beach where my bed sits and pine trees that loom above the bed. And two little sailboats. I used glitter paint on parts of the sea so that when the light comes through at th right angle, the sea sparkles. The wardrobe doors and the 'sky' of the walls have posters and pictures on them. I have one wardrobe door that I'm tiling with miniature collages which looks really cool. My posters are of Star Wars, Stargate and Leo Messi.

To be honest, I don't think my room is at all typical. But then maybe that's the point! Don't write a description based on 'A young woman's room', write it based on your character!

My room is fairly messy. Blue walls, wardrobe with sliding door - one is a mirror - various band posters on the wall and my calender and January exam timetable. My prom dress from Year 11 is on the side of my wardrobe.

I don't use my curtain rail for curtains, I hang stuff from it. There's various chimes and mirrored things, as well as my trilby, my scarves and my necker for Explorers.

A book shelf with loads of books, two frames full of concert tickets, three boxes with old magazines and important letters in them.

A desk I can't actually use as a desk. My advent calender, History folders/textbooks, paper from about three years ago - it's all piled up there. Next to it is my mini David Tennant stand-ee.

Bedside table with another pile of books, two glasses, some jewellery boxes, my headphones and ipod cable, a pen and notebook and my lamp.

My CD rack (only half full) with yet more books piled on top. Yes I have far too many books.

Various little ornaments and things on my windowsill, including Russian dolls my friend got me when she went to Russia, and two rubber ducks.

Re: Females! Things Found In Your Room.

I share my room with my girlfriend. I'm 21 and she's turning 20 in a month. We rent our flat so the walls in the whole place are white because we're not allowed to paint them. :(

In our room we have... two chest of drawers, because one is not enough for two girls living together! She has more clothes than I do, so the bottom drawer of mine is filled with all our important documents like passports, bank statements etc; loads of medicine and pill packets; notebooks and such. We also have a wardrobe with a mirror on one of the doors. Our furniture is kind of generic, not really 'us' at the moment because most of it came with the flat, once we own our own place it'll be a lot more personal, so I guess it depends if your FMC owns her own place or not, is allowed to paint her walls, stuff like that.

We have candles in our room, two of them, and candles throughout the flat. We like our candles. We have white blinds in the windows, and then pictures of our families on the windowsill, and I have two of those little scruffy teddy bear toys that say stuff like 'I love you' on them. Our room is quite messy at the minute; we haven't lived here that long and still haven't gotten into a clothes washing routine so there's lots of clothes on the floor instead of being in the laundry basket. :P

My girlfriend is a student at university, studying biomedical science, and she wants to be a doctor, so we have pictures of skeletonsand suchlike on the walls. Takes some explaining if people come over who don't know what she studies. We have my girlfriend's singing books and music stuff around, her Venetian mask collection (creepy) and my 'Learning Italian' book and random Italian notes and sayings stuck on post-its on some of the walls. (My girlfriend is originally from Italy, and I'm learning the language).

There's lots of make-up bits and bobs around the flat, and loads of shoes. More shoes than two girls need. We have a lot of books, too many to fit in our little bookcase, so we have books stacked by the side of it against the walls as well. We have our alcohol and shot glass collection on the windowledge in the living area, and more books and two bookends my mum gave us as a house warming gift, and also a radio on the windowledge.

We have a kitten too, so randomly scattered throughout the house are mice toys and crumpled up bits of paper she likes to chase.

In my early 20's I lived in a one room studio apt. The walls were white, except in the bathroom which was pale purple. I was proud of my painting of Louis Pasteur, who ruled over the kitchen. Also of my beautiful cats. Also I was proud of the way I drew little designs in the cat litter with the scoop after cleaning the box. (I think I had a lot of spare time then...) I did not have a TV. I did have a computer and a phone shaped like a frog. I still slept with a teddy bear in my twin bed. My dishes were cobalt blue glass. I had a Civil War reenacting dress in the closet, which also had rubber Halloween bats suspended from its high ceiling year round. I think I had some posters up... Plenty of books... A flowered futon couch hand me down from my parents... A rug with morning glories... Not a lot of money meant not a lot of fancy decoration.

Well... my floor is stone, my walls are a dark purple, and I have an entire wall covered with maps of Middle Earth, along with one giant one. On my other wall, I have a massive LotR poster of Frodo and Sam looking into Mordor. Other pictures include a couple of Oscar Wilde, and a Sweeney Todd one. I also have a little section above my bed with all my favourite poems.
On my wardrobe, I have all the flags of Europe stuck on it, as well as a few other countries outside Europe. On my ceiling, I have a giant map of Europe.
The rest of my room is filled with bookshelves, with a desk crammed into the corner. The things I'm most proud of would probably be my masks, that I picked up in Venice. I also have a figure of a medieval knight made of bronze which I love to pieces. My room is kind of small and I have a lot of stuff, so it's always really cluttered, but I like it like that.
I love my room. :D

My apologies. I realized that those who commented on how there is no such thing as a "typical" female bedroom are right.

My train of thought when I posted this was that I wanted to create a room for my MFC that was completely "her." In the description I want to say that there are no telling signs of the room belonging to a woman, such as a vanity or stuffed animals - which is why I asked for other "typical" things. Rather, I should have asked for common things to be found in female bedrooms, instead of generalizing.

All that aside, thank you everyone for sharing your rooms with me - I have lots of inspiration to go on now!

Re: Females! Things Found In Your Room.

I'm 19
I've been in a lot of different girls' bedrooms with different personalities - preppy, goth, messy, clean, theater-geek, and lots and lots of nerds. honestly, they're mostly all the same - the only differences are wall color, posters, and the random items that might be lying around. I think it would be pretty hard to have an obviously atypical room.

In your room..
..what things are you proud of?
the way I've designed it. my artwork, achievements, and gifts that I have on display

..what are your favorite things?
random trinkets that mean a lot to me - a small bobble head of my college mascot, a snow globe my sister gave me, a trophy from my dance team, a dolphin statue my father won me at Chuck E. Cheeses, dated bookends I received for my Bat Mitzvah, a glass statue in my initials that a friend made for me, a pillow a friend covered in quotes for me, my t-shirt quilt, which was a graduation gift from my parents

..what could you not be without?
my teddy bear and blanket

..what color(s) are on your walls?
blue now - I switched rooms with my sister when I went to college because my original room was significantly larger. the blue room is her old one, now mine. my own room was green with a pink stripe running about a foot below the ceiling.

..etc?
most girls I know, their rooms are either completely messy or completely clean. they have makeup somewhere - normally a desk or the top of their dresser. they have some kind of chair and a couple of throw pillows in addition to their bed. every girl I know that does't have a walk in closet has a closet that's bursting with clothes. there are normally lots of posters and lots of books - a few people I know don't have enough bookshelf space so they have piles on the floor. almost every girl I know has too much stuff for their room, and so some amount of it that they rarely use is in hidden tubs - under the bed, stored in the basement, or on upper shelves in the closet.

I gotta say something. When you're talking about women. You're talking about 50% of the population. That's a lot to generalize about a "typical" room. Is there a typical man's room? The person's bedroom, no matter what gender, is going to reflect the specific tastes and interests of that person.

There will also be a difference if MC has her own place. If her room is the only place she can rightfully call her own, then it's going to be crammed full of personality because there isn't anyplace else to put it. If she has an apartment, even a shared common room, there will be some "spillover" which will naturally make the bedroom more of a functional bedroom and less of an "everyroom".

I know it might be a bit late to be commenting, but...
At the moment, my walls are white, and I can't paint them (renting an apartment). For the past couple of years, (before I moved to this apartment) my walls have been blue. A medium shade, between light and dark, leaning toward light.
I'm most proud of the neon green squid hat on the back of my desk chair. I won it at 6 flags without too much effort, so I'm happy.
I'm less than proud of the half-finished puzzle of a coral reef that's been sitting on one of those fold up tv dinner stands you use when you don't feel like sitting at the kitchen table. I'd normally have it done by now, but it's just a squinch bigger than the top of the surface it's on so I lost my inspiration to finish it. It's been there about 3 weeks &gt;.&gt;
My favorite things in my room include: the jewelry box with my coin collection in it, my calendars (One is of Italy? I think, and the other has cartoon cats), my dreamcatchers (haven't slept without one since I was 10 unless I slept over at a friend's), and my two closets--1 with my books in it, the other with my notebooks and papers in it (and extra blankets, and clothes that can't be folded, such as my graduation gown, and prom dress from highschool).
I cannot be without my notebooks. Or my books. I have to have them or know they're close at hand because if I get bored and don't have anything to do...

I'm not sure the NaNo forums are really the best place if you want to find a "typical" description.
Because we're all writers, and I think the majority of us would agree that we aren't "typical."
Just a thought.

Anyway. . .

..what things are you proud of?
I have an award wall, where all the certificates and trophies and metals I've gotten for academic crap I've done, (I'm considered "gifted," apparently,) and I'm fairly proud of it.

..what are your favorite things?
My desk. The majority of the time I spend in my room is either sitting at my desk or sleeping. It's rather cluttered, and covered with pictures and quotes and bible verses, but I kind of like it. It's actually to the point that the other day, when I had to create a piece of "Self concept art" for my oral communications class, I took a picture of my desk.
I also like this picture of Edgar Allan Poe that I have. My sister-in-law gave me a print of it for my birthday last year, and I love it. I like my bed too. I have a lot of pillows and my mattress is about a foot thick and I love it. I would like my bookshelves, but I'm kind of irritated with them because they don't have enough room to hold all my books. I also love my window. It gives me a really awesome view of my back yard. and it lets light in, and I have a windowsill to put things on. You know, I like my T.V. too, but nowhere near as much as the other things.
..what could you not be without?
The whole room, and everything in it. It's like my sanctuary.
..what color(s) are on your walls?
My walls are a neon green color and I love them.
..etc?
I don't really know what to say here.

I am most definitely not a typical girl I dunno how much help I can give, being sixteen, but here you go:

I have books and stuff everywhere
If you find makeup, it has been planted
My room is untidy at all times
I have a lot of stuffed animals in my bed
Books all over the place
White bunk bed
Yellow walls with simple drawings of cell phones
A 'Blind Dogs' puppy calendar on my wall
Drawings, small notebooks with drawings and short poems clutter my desk
I have two dreamcatchers. I'm kinda obsessed with them...
There's an old fleece blanket in my bed all year 'round

..what things are you proud of?
My styrofoam and clay model of Discworld, that I made.

..what are your favorite things?
My hat collection, my books, my corkboard, my steampunk silhoette in a frame.

..what could you not be without?
Erm... I would find it difficult to live without my bed and clothes. :) Also I wouldn't want to be without my poodledog (stuffed animal from when I was a baby).

..what color(s) are on your walls?
I have pale purple walls and a huge yellow batik wrap thing from Costa Rica.

..etc?
I have a globe on my desk that has post-it notes on it related to the novel I'm writing. My friends find it weird and have to make sure I realize the stuff on the notes is not real. The globe is so big I can't use my desk to write on.

I think my room is an odd mix of typical and atypical. My walls are painted blue, with a darker blue strip by the floor. Curtains are blue. Sheets can be yellow, dark green, navy blue, peach, pretty much any colour. There's a framed poster of LOTR: The Two Towers on the wall, a 32" TV, PS3, gaming PC, and Kindle Touch, with scattered earphones, headsets, chargers, cables, and notebooks. The dressing table is full of all kinds of body sprays and perfumes, because I really like things like that, and the floor is generally a mess of shoes and socks. There's a black dreamcatcher balanced on the dressing table mirror, because I had nowhere to hang it above my bed, and a model of an ice dragon that a friend gave me for a birthday one year. My blanket is blue and brown plaid. There's a black leather jacket hanging behind my door. One of the more interesting items of decor on my dressing table is a small metal container full of my baby teeth, which squicked my boyfriend badly when he saw them.

I have my art art things, (TONS of papers, pencils, pens, markers, ect.), writing things, lots of notebooks, a standard desk with my important things on it: My Russian doll, camera, money box, candle, lava lamp, headphones, antique bracelet from WWI from France, French dictionary. Then on my wall I have a cork pin-board. It has a lot of my dreams posted on it, with several pictures of my best friends. I have some inspiring quotes posted ("Hang in there strong" is one,) some of my art, and a picture of my dad. I have my favorite necklace hanging by a tack, and I also have my suitcase key on it too. My walls are sky blue and light grass green. I just moved in, so my things are still in crates and such. My bed is a polka dot bed spread and a stripey blanket. On my wall I have a wooden ladder as a shelf with all my crafts and art that I have made. Oh, on my desk I have a laptop too.
My room is usually clean and organized, everything in it's specific place. That's just how I am. I have several of my favorite books displayed too. My suitcase is my most favorite item, and I couldn't live without my notebooks and journals.

- A Shaun the Sheep plushie
- A picture of Shakyamuni Buddha (hung there by my mom to cover an empty stretch of wall)
- Two bookshelves laden with genres from crappy romantic novels (yes, I'm a rehabilitated Twilighter) to serious literary criticism and school books
- A wardrobe
- Desk with a ton of pink things on it, including a pink lamp and a pink-and-white plastic cabinet for stationery
- Some fake plants
- My audio recording gear
- A brown vanity table that totally clashes with everything else because my mom just dumped it there since she didn't want to buy another one
- A wooden statue of an owl, facing the window in reference to Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom and righteous warfare. I freaking love mythology.

Re: Females! Things Found In Your Room.

I am in my early 20s, but watch I have a lot of obsessions so that's what my room is about.

First my roommate's room at school. She has a HUGE poster of Marilyn Monroe with a quote about sex. She also has coloring pages of Disney princesses and Wicked memorabilia (photos of her in costume as one of the characters for Halloween, poster, drawing of the poster, etc.). My roommate and I are both children at heart, but I just love her Marilyn poster because it's a great juxtaposition with everything else being all girly and cute (while I am also obsessed with Wicked, I do see it as a girly musical, I don't mean to offend anyone with that!).

My room... I'm basically 5.
At home my room has white walls. I have a desk that is wooden (well, it's fake, but looks like wood, it's a cheap desk lol) and lots of shelves that are painted red and orange. My bed has a headboard that is painted red and has Elmo scrapbook stickers attached to it (and here we go!). My bedspread is a red and orange chenille furry fabric. I rotate Elmo sheets. The shelves are filled with Elmo stuffed animals, figurines, and other memorabilia. I have wall decals of Elmo, and Elmo garland around my closet. Sensing a pattern? LOL My bookshelves are white and actually hold books haha. One shelf on the bookshelves is devoted to my Harry Potter book collection (I have all the hardcovers and special editions of the American books, kids' cover illustration paperbacks of all the UK books, and I collect international editions), all of my Harry Potter coloring books/sticker books/ljournals/etc. and a scrapbook of newspaper and magazine clippings. In front of many of these books I have my wand in its wand box and some figurines/other accessories on top of that. My dresser has a mirror on top and it is white, but we put Elmo wallpaper border on the front of the drawers and I have stuffed animal Elmos sitting on top of it/hanging onto the mirror (it's up against a wall so they are like smushed between the wall and the mirror) and Elmo jewelry boxes. I keep most of my jewelry and hair things on the top of my dresser. I have a Harry Potter poster that is red-orange to go with the overall theme of my room. This is my dream room redesign from senior year of high school and my tastes have not changed, lol. One of my high school teachers helped me with it. I feel really sorry for my future husband, lol. We will need an Elmo room in our house!! I could not be without any of my Elmos. LOL Also, yes, my car is the same red-orange color. Slightly obsessed.

At school my bedroom is uh, slightly more subdued.
I have a standard desk/bookshelf/bed. I use the bookshelf for books and I also have another black shelf that breaks up into 9 square units from Target that I also use for books. I like having "themed" shelves and making them look pretty (like the HP one in my room) so I have like one big shelf with most of my "fun" books (I HAD to have my favorite books with me at school - even if I don't read them often it's comforting to see them there) and I have some tiny ones displayed in front of the others. I have a black cube shelf with my HP paperbacks and have a Harry figurine standing on top of some of them since they fit better stacked rather than standing. I have another with scrapbooking stickers/stuff and I put some of those in the front, etc. On top of the regular bookshelf I have two baskets for purses/coats/etc. On top of the black shelf, I have my (penguin!!) humidifier, a frame with lots of pictures from home, a few miniature stuffed animals/keychains lined up around the frame, and my Taylor Swift "shrine". I got this mini-poster that fit perfectly between the humidifier and frame, so I now also have my CDs displayed in front of the poster. There's also a mini birdhouse I made where I volunteer and my earrings (both of which have nothing to do with Taylor but are just in that spot, haha). I have some crate shelves that I use for lightweight things. I used to have a doll display on the shelves, but I always end up moving the dolls. Right now the top one has some purses and there's a fan and a basket of random stuff sitting on top of that, and I have some purses hanging off the side. The other two shelves just have random things. My desk is an L shape and has mostly my laptop, printer, a little tupperware tower of desk/craft supplies, and is covered in random junk (I am very disorganized). The shorter part of the L has drawers and I have one for important papers and stationery, one for hair things and jewelry, and the bottom one is for my medical supplies (first aid kit, bandaids, prescription refills I don't need to use yet, and OTC meds). My sewing kit and safebox *should* be in there but right now they are in a random corner that was empty so clearly needed to be filled with junk. My bed is like my room back home, Elmo comforter, stuffed animals all around it (this is actually practical - our beds stand out from the wall because of the head/footboard and I have it pushed up against the wall, so they are lining the wall so it's more comfortable and there's not an awkward gap) and right now I have my dolls mostly sitting against my footboard. I have a bulliten board over my bed and desk that mainly has more pictures. And then I have a closet. My jewelry organizer for non-earrings is a plastic organizer thing on a hanger that is flat and folds up, so I just have it hanging on the closet door. OH I have the coolest poster over my bed. It's here: http://www.shakespearesglobe.com/shop/product/quoting-shakespeare-poster/87 Also, I had empty wall space behind my door, so I made these index cards with lines from songs on them (like all with different handwriting/illustrations), and covered it up. That's probably my favorite part of my room. Our walls are kind-of a gross color, like between grey and tan.

My room at school is more utilitarian. For example I wouldn't come home and put my purses and keys in a basket in my room at my parents' house, I put them in the dining room so they are easier to access when I go to leave the house. Also, I have an entire half of my parents' basement pretty much to myself, and that's where I keep all of my crafting, scrapbooking, and doll things.

I forgot to mention my penguin rug! I have a penguin rug in front of my bed at school. I am also really into penguins and I have a lot of penguin bathroom accessories here too. My mom uses most of my penguin collection as Christmas decoration, though, so it's not really obvious at my parents' house except for then.

I also have a mask from Venice in my room at home and that would be one of my more prized posessions.

Also, at school we have an apartment with a kitchen, living room, bathroom and two bedrooms. So yeah, we also have posters and knick-knacks throughout the apartment. My current favorite are these Disney notecards I found online that feature the princesses' dresses turned into modern coture gowns. I couldn't bear to use them, so my roommate suggested mounting them on scrapbook paper and framing it. It's yet to actually be hung up on the wall because I'm lazy but it's pretty.

-what things are you proud of?
My ribbons won at dance competitions, writing notebooks, books on my shelve.

-what are your favorite things?
Hmm, probably my ribbons and writing notebooks. And my laptop, cell phone, tech geek here.

-what are things you could not be without?
Laptop, writing notebooks, cell phone. ( And the Bible, of course. )

-what color are your walls?
Two different shades of blue.

Etc...
Unfortunately the washer and dryer are in the room too, that means all of the many laundry baskets are there too.

I'm not really a nail-polish-y kind of girl, but there's a dresser, nightstand, bunkbed, two book shelves, and many things " strewn " about.( I have clothes that I have yet to put up in a box, at least they aren't all over the floor! )
