Islamic prayers?

I know that Muslims recite prayers five times daily. Is it dawn, mid-morning, noon, mid-afternoon and then evening?

What is the call to prayer in Islam?

How long do the prayers last?

And are non-Muslims required to participate if they are living in a Muslim society?

Re: Islamic prayers?

Prayer times: between dawn and sunrise (1. prayer, fajr); after the sun has reached its highest point (dhur, 2.); some time in the afternoon (3. asr, timing can differ according to the rules the islamic community adheres to); directly after the sun has set (maghreb, 4.); after full dark (approx. 1 to 1,5 h after maghreb, isha).

Call to prayer - see mythrai

I think you will need some research - the prayers are of different length, they are composed of units called ruka. One ruka consists of standing, bowing and going on the knees (very shortcut explanaition). So first prayer has two, second, third and fifth prayer 4, fourth prayer 3 ruka - obligatory. Usually people ad a fixed number of non- obligatory.

And no, non-muslims are not forced to participate, in some opinions not even allowed to join.

Someone's late to the party! :D

This series is an awesome look at how Muslims pray. Also, women raise their hands just up to their shoulders, not to their ears.

It's a 7-video series, but worth the watch. And the guy's Australian! :D

Re: Islamic prayers?

1) Dawn, noon, mid-afternoon, sunrise, evening/night.
2) Read up on the 'Azhan', however there are technically two calls; one given a few minutes beforehand to let people know that prayer will be read, then when everyone i assembled an Iqama is given. An Iqama is a lot like the Azhan but quite shorter and with different meaning, somewhat.
3) Tricky question. Each prayer is split off into "rukoos" which are basically stages. The rakaahs are, in general - stand (recite) bow (recite) stand (recite) prostrate (recite) kneel (recite) prostrate (recite) and in certain rakaahs, there's also two episodes of kneeling.
-Dawn prayer: Fajr: two rakaahs, two kneelings in last raakah.
-Noon: Zuhr (also spelt Thuhr): four rakaahs, two kneelings in 2nd and 4th rakaahs.
-Mid afternoon: Asr: same as Zuhr.
-Sunset: Maghrib*: three rakaahs, two kneelings in 2nd and 3rd rakaah.
-Evening-Isha: same as Zuhr and Asr.
And that's about it! There's also sunnah prayers, which are non-obligatory but recommended, in general, except for Asr.
4) No, definitely not.
That's all! :)
