Specifically, verses a Christian would recommend to another Christian to read when she's encountered something which is inexplicable and really threatening. The first thing that comes to mind is the 23rd Psalm, but I'm sure there are plenty more...

Jeremiah 29:11 Whenever I need a reminder that God is bigger than the scary thing, I turn to that.

This is a good one. I have actually used this one in my novel to help my MC.

Jeremiah 29:11-13 is one of my all-time favorite Scripture passages, and it has helped me through some difficult things. =) Some others that I find comforting and have or would share with a fellow Christian include:

Jeremiah 31:3 - "The LORD has appeared of old to me, saying: 'Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; Therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you.' "

Isaiah 65:24 - "It shall come to pass that before they call, I will answer; and while they are still speaking, I will hear."

Philippians 4:6 - "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God"

“For the Lord shall fight for you and ye shall hold your peace…" (Exodus 14:14) "...What then shall we say to these things, if God be for us who can be against us.” (Romans 8:31)

Mark 10:27 - “With men this is impossible, but not with God, for with God all things are possible…”

Also Revelation 21:1-4 and all of Psalm 91, though I won't post them out here due to their length. There are so many others, but it depends on what the exact situation is or the need of the person to whom I would sharing.

Interesting question... I have a couple of suggestions. There’s always Proverbs 3:5-7, and another verse which I have always found encouraging, is Ephesians 6:10-18. :)

I always find Psalm 121 comforting. Psalm 27 as well.

Joshua 1:9, definitely.
Maybe Isaiah 44:24-28 (It's very "I am totally God, and I do all of fthese awe-inspiring things".)
Pslam 91
Maybe Psalm 3
John 14:27

I realize a bunch of these are entire psalms. Sorry. ^^'

2 Corinthians 12:9 "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness."

Not the whole verse, just the part speaking from God's perspective (it's the Paul Letters so it's not actually God speaking, just Paul giving his impressions), that I think is particularly sweet.

I always us the one line "The Lord is my Shepherd, there is NOTHING I shall want". I realise that the NOTHING is missing in some translations, but it has got me though oral cancer.

2 Kings 2:23-24 NKJV

"Then he went up from there to Bethel; and as he was going up the road, some youths came from the city and mocked him, and said to him, “Go up, you baldhead! Go up, you baldhead!” So he turned around and looked at them, and pronounced a curse on them in the name of the LORD. And two female bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the youths."

It always comforts me to know that if someone insults me for being bald, I can curse them and God will send she-bears to rip out their entrails.

I have started reading the psalms and had to stop after psalm 4 because they are all just filled with encouragement for various things.

You could also use biblegateway.com. You can search by terms there and there are also a TON of translations available in case one sounds awkward in your text.

John 16:33 These things have I spoken unto you that in me ye might have peace, in the world you shall have tribulation but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
I did that by memory so if I got something slightly wrong my apologies.
Also Psalm 37.
