Coolsville

It was a starless summer night. The clouds overhead kept any natural light from augmenting the street lamps' illumination. They also locked in the humidity that made the air feel like you had to swim through it.

Mynah didn't look like he minded it, even though he was wearing a suit and tie. He always wore a suit and tie when he was getting ready for a job anyways. A little smile flicked across his boyish face as he leaned against the lamp post, waiting for the right moment. His eyes were fixed on the bank across the street.

Re: Coolsville

The muggy heat pressed in on all sides like a warm, moist blanket. It made Oz's skin crawl to slog through it, but slog he did. He tugged at the cuffs off his shirt, swept his hair off the back of his neck, and barely kept the snarl off his lips. It jsut figured he'd be wearing three shirts when they wandered into a town hot enough to boil eggs in.

"Cheer up, boss. It won't be much longer until we find a hotel -- I mean, there's got to be one somewhere, right?"

Ah. There was the reason he was even out of the truck to begin with. Oz glanced down at his companion and offered a stiff smile, "Of course, Kay."

She nodded, brown hair all pinned up like she'd just rolled out of bed, and rolled her skinny, bare shoulders back. He walked a bit closer that strictly comfortable, if only because he was well aware that she looked an odd mix between innocent child and jaded streetwalker in those shorts and the heels she insisted on wearing everywhere.

She spotted someone up ahead, leaning up against the lamp-post and brightened up. "Excuse me!" she called, quickening her pace enough to leave Oz in her dust. She lifted a hand to wave, "Excuse me, sir?"

Mynah's gaze swept toward her, the smile becoming a little more business like. "Can I help you?"

Odd mix of clothing the girl was wearing. He wondered who her friend was.

"Maybe," Kane chirped. She pushed a lock out of her eyes and smiled at the stranger, not in the slightest bothered by shyness, or social decorum, "Y'see, we're new in town-- just rolled in a few minutes ago, in fact -- and we're looking for a place to stay tonight. We can't seem to find a hotel, though. Map's not any good, either. So I said to myself, Kay, that looks like a gent who knows his way around, and I was wondering if you might be able to point us in the right direction, if you'd be so kind."

Oz, half a step behind her, barely kept himself from facepalming. She couldn't just ask for directions, no, he had to deal with a girl who had to tell a story. Fitting, since she travelled with an artist, but downright annoying most times.

Mynah took the onslaught of information he couldn't care less about in stride, nodding sagely. "I know a few places nearby, though you might be better off sleeping in your car if you're a nervous kinda person. There aren't many reputable places to stay anymore, y'know."

Re: Coolsville

Nicky, who was walking pass a bank, paused in her steps to assess the people across the street. She was in her full police uniform, though she had no intention of policing that night. She didn't recognize them as any of her clients, so she kept walking. Her people knew to look for her.

-------------
Alexander blended into the bench he was sitting on, and watched the cop as he strolled down the street. According to his research, this cop was involved in some illegal exchanges with criminals. Anger flared up inside him at the very thought. Corruption in the police was all too common in Coolsville. Too many times had he seen convicted felons skip out of jail scot-free because of someone on the other side who bailed them out. Cops were the real criminals and he was determined to prove it.

"All the same, the truck's a bit tight with two people. Any no-tell will be fine, the closest, if you can manage it," Kane said. She had to laugh under her breath, though, because the idea of there being worse out there than who she shadowed was a real gas.

Oz cocked his head to one side, pushed his glasses up his nose, "What's town like, by the way? We're trying to get a feel for the place. Might stay a spell."

Eve slid further down into the worn, threadbare, musty smelling chair, ignoring the spring biting into her back. Perhaps if she was really quiet and didn't move the desk clerk would forget she was there. Shouldn't be too hard, he didn't seem to notice the sickly yellow bulb that kept flickering, the dirty carpets, smudged windows, old furniture. It was laughable, completely laughable that anybody would actually pay money to stay in such a dump. Then again, who was she to say, she was sitting in the lobby, probably contracting a case of fleas, lice, or worse just by being there. Of course, she wasn't paying to sit there either.
Only one person had come in that evening, some grungy looking teen with a fistful of crumpled cash and a hollow look about him. Probably a runaway, typical place to find those kind of people. Wiggling a little bit to get more comfortable she decided she'd most likely move on if nothing interesting happened, if the clerk didn't toss her out first, that is.

Re: Coolsville

An endless, mind-numbing volley of words echoed through Merrit’s worn-out mind. Again and again he heard the words of the witnesses, the opposing attorney, the judge, and finally, the jury’s verdict: guilty. He could hear his own words, too, and went back to them again and again, torturing himself with corrections and amendments, things he could have said or done that might have changed things. He stormed out into the muggy night air and headed toward the bus stop. If he hurried, he could still make it before the late night bus.

Noticing people ahead, Merrit slowed down, analyzing the little group quickly. He nodded a stiff greeting to a passing cop. He felt so utterly outraged by the entire justice system right now, it was all he could do to keep from slugging him. His eyes locked back on to the small group, two men and a young girl, none of whom looked like the trustworthy type at all. He turned away, trying not to draw attention to himself, and continued walking, keeping them in his peripheral vision.

-----------

Finally the damned officer had decided to show up. Kaelin had smoked two cigarettes in the time it took him to get there, and had started a third. Standing up, he slid out from under the awning and into the dim light of the streetlamp, making eye contact with the cop, a rather short, unimpressive man, probably in his twenties. He jerked his head back to toward the awning, gesturing to the cop that they should complete the deal under there, and took a mental count of all the places he could have stashed a weapon.

((^Yes, this is Nicky.))

Melanie sat on a street bench, legs crossed daintily. She had her phone out and was pretending to text, however she was really observing the people around her. A French-tipped finger reached up to absently twirl a honey blonde curl. A slight sigh escaped from her lips; how she missed the days when money seemed to flow endlessly towards her without her doing a thing. Of course, now she was forced to actually work, albeit illegally.

"Really, that close? Well isn't this our lucky night, eh? Thanks so much!" she all but bubbled over with good cheer and good will towards man. Oz rubbed at his temples and made a mental note to talk to her about laying the act on thick. It'd save them some weird looks, later, and plenty of money on asprin. It wasn't natural, that voice.

"Thanks," he said, distracted, "156 and Kelly? Have a good night. We'll be out of your hair -- come on, baby."

Kane shrugged narrow shoulders and drew away from Mynah, unbothered by the sharpness in her companion's tone. "Have a good night," she said, and offered a little wave before she followed Oz down the street, her heels clip-clopping as she walked.

Nicky nodded to the grungy man and followed him to the awning. She didn't wait and banter. "So, are you looking for a trade or what?" She didn't get any specifics on the nature of their meeting. She didn't care too much so long as her rep was intact. Nicky casually glanced around the street for any eavesdroppers.

-------------
Alex narrowed his eyes as the cop disappeared under an awning. He was about to leave when a girl sat on the same bench he was on. Would he look too suspicious going after the cop? What was she doing here anyway? He broke his gaze away from the cop and back to the girl. It seemed like she was waiting for someone, so he decided to stay put until she left.

Kane people-watched as she followed Oz -- they were moving in the same direction as an older man; stuffy, sort of harried looking. A lawyer by the cut of his suit and the shine of his shoes, though she didn't know what side he played on from this distnace. She grimaced and rubbed at her forehead as a ball of white-hot pain settled behind her left eye.

Damn these headaches, the heat brought out the worst in her.

"It's not much farther, babe," Oz said over his shoulder. He seemed distracted, and eager to get out of the heat. By the time they readed the no-tell, a sweat had broken on his face, and he wiped at it with his sleeve.

The air in the lobby was stifling and stuffy, smelling of old cigarette smoke and too much B.O. There was a woman off to one side, though why she`d hang around, Kane had no idea.

Eve didn't move from where she sat, though she did send a cursory glance at the two, a heavy lidded, disinterested look that merely spoke of a second of curiosity before dismissing them as of no interest and returning to the battered magazine she'd picked up.
She studied them out of the corner of her eye, glad now for the flickering light and the odd shadows it cast, for they would not be able to tell she was looking at them, even if they stared straight at her.
The girl looked young, too young to be traipsing about in those heels, yet Eve knew better than a lot of people that looks could be deceiving. The guy looked tense, distracted, as though he was just waiting to get somewhere he could close a door and relax, temporarily out of sight from anyone. They both looked hot, and no wonder, in weather like this.
The desk clerk somehow found the time, and energy, to shoot her an annoyed look in the middle of asking the two what type of room they'd like. Eve melted a little further into the chair and swiped at some stray strands of hair before tossing the magazine back onto the scarred coffee table.

Chelsea was on her beat, and being very bored. The streetlamps gave off a harsh glow that only served to deepen shadows in crevices and alleyways, of which there were many, and none of the gangs we usually worked with had pulled anything recently, so there were no meetings to put together or tradeoffs to organize.

Chelsea didn't think of herself as a bad cop, just a smart one. There was too much crime and too many criminals for the force to put them all down, so why not reach a compromise? An agreement that was mutually beneficial to all parties involved, so to speak. As long as the criminals didn't do anything too drastic, and as long as Chelsea got her cut of every job, she wouldn't be responsible for their downfall and they didn't give her a hard time.

She wasn't a bad cop. Merely an opportunistic one.

((Guys, it's okay. I already knew there was a male desk clerk acting as the receptionist. It said so in ArtsyGal's first post. I was totally planning on having her show up late, whenever I got around to setting up a post. It's totally chill. But anyway, here she is. No worries.))

As usual, Sheila burst into the musty, run-down lobby about ten minutes late, wrinkling her nose at the disgusting place. Her pedicure had taken a lot longer than she’d thought it would, and then she’d had to zip home and pop a low-cal TV dinner in the microwave, and in the process she’d accidentally caught sight of herself in the mirror and her hair had been a wreck… Really, she had every excuse to be a few minutes late. Heels clicking on the dirty, faded linoleum, she swung around the two people waiting in front of the desk and marched up to...oh, no. She’d forgotten his name again. The desk clerk dude who so obligingly worked a few extra minutes into her shift every day.

“It’s alright, babe,” she said, flashing a lipstick smile and patting his shoulder. “I’ve got it from here. What were you asking for?” she asked, turning to the customers. She picked up a ballpoint pen and clicked it open, poised expectantly.

---------

Hearing the officer’s voice, Kaelin blinked, feeling terrible for assuming from her dress and appearance that this woman was a man. It took him a second to remember what he was talking about.

“Not exactly. Are you Jermaine?” His mom had apparently contacted an Officer Jermaine and explained where to meet Kaelin, though she’d given her no details on his appearance, and, as far as he was aware, hadn’t even explained the nature of the meeting. If Kaelin had snagged the wrong cop, he was screwed. He crossed two fingers, waiting apprehensively for an answer.

---------

Merrit felt increasingly uncomfortable as two of the disreputable-seeming people moved away from the other and began walking in the same direction as him. He picked up his pace, slipping his cell out of his pocket and pretending to text someone. That was something he often did around small groups of people he wasn’t acquainted with. He didn’t really know why. It made him feel less awkward for some reason. In any case, he couldn’t help feeling a bit relieved when they entered a shabby motel at 156 and Kelly.

Mynah checked his watch. Ten o'clock. Hopefully his associates wouldn't be late. And speak of the devil...

Two silhouettes approached him from the shadows of an alleyway, one vaguely feminine, the other masculine. They paused a long way off, and he caught a whisper almost no one else would have heard at that distance.

"Ready when you are, boss."

Mynah grinned and nodded. They knew the plan. Without another world he turned and strode straight toward the bank, hands in his pockets.

"Yeah," Nicky eyed the guy suspiciously. Was she wasting her time or what? "You Madam Carters' kid?" She couldn't imagine such a high-ranking criminal royalty having an offspring like this guy. She fished her pockets for a lighter and a beaten up pack of cigarettes. It was a nasty habit and she often wondered when she picked it up. Probably sometime around her other 'nasty' habits. With practiced ease, she lit up and blew out a puff of smoke.

[Wapahh, quick post. Dunno what to do with Zoey right now, so I'll just post for these two. Beck can be pretty much anywhere, by the way, if he'd needed or someone can run into him or whatever.]

Ria sighed quietly to herself as she scrolled through photos on her camera. She'd just left a friend's house, and she wished she hadn't. The humidity out here was disgusting. Pushing her hair off her forehead, she glanced up at the bank across the street. She frowned curiously. Something seemed to be going on over there, but what?

--

Beck exhaled smoke slowly, glad for the opportunity to stop and enjoy a cigarette. He was outside in the muggy air, but it didn't bother him so much anymore. It was just another evening on the job. Glancing at the dying cigarette, he puffed out another breath - smokeless this time - and crushed it under his shoe. God. It seemed like ages ago he picked up the habit. He kept telling himself he needed to quit - but he had the feeling there was just nothing for it.

Chelsea smelled the cigarette smoke before she saw the man, standing in the shadows around a dimly flickering streetlamp. She'd quit smoking years ago -- she didn't want to spend her last years with cancer in a hospital -- but the smell of the smoke, as always, made her want to draw it deep into her lungs and breathe it out. She gave herself a mental kick. It wasn't worth it. "Hey," she called to the man. It was too dark to see his face yet. "You lost?"

Once more Daia had to face the dreadful mornings. Every since she became even freakier than she saw herself to be mornings were a nightmare: wake up calls, smells, noises. Luckily she noticed she doesn't need the alarm anymore and she would wake up instinctively, but the smells? How would she stop herself from feeling them from her own bedroom. That morning she gave up trying to sleep some more. Her mother had prepared her something great at home and her room mate was heating up her food apparently. She was pissed, she jumped from the bed and went to the kitchen.

Her room mate was startled. Daia said no word. She split the food in half, got her package and headed back to her room. She readied herself for college. In 10 minutes she was out on the door grumpy as usual.

Oliver frowned down at the soda the waitress had placed on his table. It was that orange stuff that parents got their kids because it didn't have caffeine in it. He probably could have used the caffeine, personally, but he'd bought it because it was what Jenny always got when they went to restaurants. And for whatever reason, he was feeling particularly nostalgic tonight.

His eyes turned to the fries he'd been halfheartedly munching at for the past few minutes, though he wasn't really looking at them. Jenny was off at a university in California. He hoped she was doing all right. Maybe he'd call her, if they didn't get a call in--

His two-way squawked, and he smiled grimly. Nope, no chance of that in this town. He looked over to the other cops he'd been eating with. "Hey, we've got a call."

Ever since Daia noticed she became 'freakier' than usual she had decided to move from the rented apartment she was sharing with a room mate into a hostel with no-sharing basis. She felt lonelier than ever but she no longer had to face the dreadful mornings. Mornings were a nightmare: wake up calls, smells, noises. Luckily she noticed she doesn't need the alarm anymore and she would wake up instinctively, but the smells? How would she stop herself from feeling them from her own bedroom.

She decided to take a walk that night. She needed some air and some noise to think. She usually opted for silence, but it was too quiet and felt miserably enough thanks to her loneliness. She got out in some casual clothes, a bit too thin for that night, and shivered on the road to the town center.

"Why ME!?", she shouted on what seemed to be an empty road except for the few cars passing by.

Clyde glanced off towards Oliver -- a good kid and a good cop, as far as she could tell -- when he spoke and nodded crisply. "What've we got?" she asked, and reached for her mug. She leaned back in her chair and drained the last few mouthfuls of coffee, the grit of undesolved sugar familiar in her mouth.

She was new on this force, new in this town, so she'd been careful. She didn't call attention to herself, didn't try to make friends. She did her job and she went home, which made group-meals like this particularly awkward. Nothing against them, but she'd prefer to be on her own, especially when she was still getting a feel for the people here.

Nobody seemed to realize they were related, even on the rare occasions when they actually interacted. His mom must have told her who she was meeting. “How much did she tell you?”

The woman obviously didn’t have a problem with smoking. He lifted his own cigarette back to his lips and inhaled deeply.

---------

Just a step past the shabby motel, Merrit jerked to a halt, suddenly remembering something. He had to go make a deposit at the bank – the cash-by date on his check expired tonight. He swore. It would take several minutes to get back to the bank, and then at least five to cash the check. He might not make it to the 10:30 bus.

Shaking his head at his own stupidity, he turned around and booked it back the direction he’d come.

---------

“Ah, no, we charge per night. Eighty dollars a night. What can I book you for?” Sheila asked, shooting him a sugary smile. Totally forced, too. She rarely felt like smiling sincerely these days. Right now, she either wanted to make out passionately with an attractive man, or curl up in a fetal position and sob. She most definitely did not want to be forcing smiles at shadowy customers in a no-star motel.

He helped himself to a mint from the bowl off to one side, slipped it into his mouth as he glanced over his shoudler to make sure his companion hadn't wandered off. It was a valid concern -- he'd nearly left her at a truck stop, once.

"So," he said, friendly as always, glancing down at her nametag for a split-second, "What's you do to get stuck working the graveyard shift...Sheila?"

Eve shifted, a bored, half asleep look on her face. Sheila had been late, again, which wasn't too surprising, it actually meant Eve had gotten a few extra minutes in front of the air conditioner . . . of course, that hadn't been entirely pleasant, as it kept belching foul smelling clouds of dusty air that was far warmer than it ought to have been. Depending on her mood Shelia would either completely ignore her presence, or kick her out the second she was finished with the people at the desk.
They were an interesting pair, she wondered what they were doing here, especially what kind of business they were doing that would warrant having to stay in this rotten bucket of mold, dust, and seeping smoke.

He put down money for his food plus a tip, then headed to the patrol car. "Ever handled a situation like this before?"

Nicky would find out about much Kaelin knew about it before letting on how much she knew. She had already convinced a few of her "clients" that she had a power from the radiation. Maybe she could dupe him into thinking that as well.

“What?” Kaelin asked, totally bewildered. The woman’s random comment about radiation threw him off a bit. And what did she mean by issues? Radiation did have a tendency to do that, didn’t it? “That’s…not what I’m here for. I don’t know about that. This is about a guy we need behind bars.”

------

“Oh, I’ve got a day job at a hair salon,” Sheila told him, settling down in the office chair and checking him out a room, “but it don’t pay enough to pay to the bills. So I’ve gotta work nights here. It’s not too bad, though. Work at the salon don’t start until 12:30, so I got from about five to eleven to catch a few winks each mornin’.”

Giving him a cheerful smile, Sheila handed him his key. “Room 231, second floor. King-sized bed. If you change your mind about how long you be stayin’, just tell me and I’ll add it up. Y’can pay on yer way out.” Noticing his lady friend out of the corner of her eye, she turned to her. “I wouldn’t eat those, hun. God knows how long they’ve been sittin’ there gatherin’ dust. Probably brake your jawbone.”

Clyde found herself falling into step with Oliver easily, shadowing him to the cruiser and slipping into the passenger's side.

"Oddly enough, no," she said casually, "I came from a po-dunk town, born and raised -- the most excitement I found was the odd B&E, or a traffic accident. I suppose I'll get enough practice here, though." She pause,d then added, feeling a touch defensive at her own inexperience, "Like I said, small town."

-

Oz smiled at Sheila and took his key. He flipped out his wallet and tucked the key away, before he casually plucked out a twnety and slid nit across the desk. He offered another smile, slight and genuine,

"Thanks so much, Miss Sheila, I'll be sure to swing by if anything changes. And here's hoping your night is a good one, alright? We've been all across this country on business and I don't think we've met a clerk quite as cheery as you." His smile widened into a crooked grin, friendly as anything, "Anyway, have a good night. If you need help with anything-" If you're going to be robbed, was politely hinted, but unsaid, "-you know where to find us."

He tucked his wallet back into his pocket and turned, "C'mon, babe, room's ready."

Kane spun on her heel, candy forgotten, and trotted over like a particularly well-trained pet. She tossed an easy grin as Sheila, along with a little wave, "Thanks," she chirped, "Have a good night. You too," she added, with a glance at the girl reading an ancient magazine.

She jerked her head in return to the girl's parting comment, a slightly questioning look on her face, as though she couldn't believe someone had actually paid any mind to her at all.
She watched them from under her lashes as they headed for their room before risking a glance at Sheila, just great, that certainly didn't help her. Sheila would remember she was here now.

The bank wasn't far away. The first thing Oliver noticed as he swung the car around to the curb was how quiet everything was. The robbery was supposed to have started not long ago, right? Wasn't it a little too soon for them to have all the hostages down and under control?

Ria, who had been standing there not too far away with her camera clutched to her chest, looked over as the cop car wailed up. OhmyGod, so there really was something going on! It was just so quiet Ria couldn't be sure. She lingered where she was, watching with wide, curious eyes.

"You, too, sweetheart," Sheila said with a smile, this time genuine. The two walked out of the room, but Sheila kept smiling. What a nice man! She fingered the bill and gaped. He'd left her a twenty. Nobody tipped that much, especially not customers slipping in during her graveyard shift. They were usually so raunchy, she was lucky to get anything. She looked back up from her desk, staring the direction the man had left. Seeing that girl Eve out of the corner of her eye, Sheila turned to her, pursing her lips. "You better not make a racket if your plan is t'stay there," she told her, though Eve never made a peep.

---------

When the officer snapped at him, Kaelin flinched like he thought she would hit him. However, she just dug in one of her pockets and pulled out a notebook and pencil, asking him who the guy was.

"He calls himself Mynah," Kaelin started. Personally, he found that choice of name incredibly feminine, but then again, he didn't really have much room to talk. But at least he hadn't named himself. "Real name's Roger Uley. Here's his file." He extended the documents he was carrying toward the officer. "Has some pictures, some of his information, whatever we could scrounge up. Apparently he crossed Ms. Delaney Carter at some point, and she wants him locked up, at least five years." He paused, trying to remember if there was anything else.

Because I've been as loud as a big band up 'til this point she bit her tongue though, Sheila was in a good mood this evening and Eve wasn't about to push it. Leaning her head back she ticked down the pitiful list of information she'd been able to gather this evening, then again, this lobby wasn't exactly the pinnacle of flowing information. Still, the couple who'd checked in might be interesting to watch, he'd certainly managed to improve Sheila's mood, must have been a pretty good tip.

"Well, there's the upside at least," Clyde said, with a half-hearted smile. She smoothed her hair back and took a deep breath, trying to calm her nerves as they pulled up.

She tensed slightly, unease prickling down her back at the strange....mutedness surrounding the bank. The air felt heavy, smothering, and from more than just the intolerable heat.

She rolled her shoulders back to work out some tension, and got out of the car slowly, glancing around. "That's.... strange," she said lowly, with a look towards her partner.

"MIght as well get the bags now before it gets much darker -- you want to stay--"

"No,"she said brightly, and tossed his a smile. He grinned back and held the door for her when they cut through the lobby.

Oz offered a quick wave to Sheila, anod to the girl she'd been talking to, and ducked out after his lady. They had things to do, after all.

"Alright. Here's the upfront," Kaelin said, slipping an envelope out of his jacket pocket and extending it toward her. He honestly didn't know how much it was, but he hoped it would satisfy her. She'd surprised him by how quickly she'd agreed, and he didn't want anything to mess that up. One of the many sirens that always screamed through the city at night grew steadily louder and stopped nearby, close enough that Kaelin could see the red and blue lights flashing against the building opposite. Instinctively, he stiffened, growing wary.

---------

Sheila nodded and smiled at the man and his girlfriends as they cut back through, returning his little wave. She wondered what their names were. Maybe she would ask them when they came back. No, that would be weird, wouldn't it? Sheila wasn't really sure. It seemed like a perfectly normal thing to ask someone you were talking to their name, but she wasn't actually talking to them anymore. She should have asked when they were talking.

The air-conditioning shuddered on, and Sheila shivered, glancing around the room in annoyance. Did it have to be any colder in here than it already was?

---------

Merrit stopped a few hundred yards before the bank and quickly scratched his plans of cashing his check there. A police car sat parked in front of it, lights flashing and sirens blaring, and a few cops mingled outside of the building, looking tense. Merrit took a few steps closer, trying to figure out what they were doing, and suddenly everything went quiet. It was like someone at just dropped a muffler on the world. Everything seemed muted, smothered; even the siren sounded quieter than it had just a second ago. What had just happened?

She turned and stared into the dark, with steely, narrowed eyes, gaze flitting to and fro, trying top lock onto the cause. One hand rested on her gun.

"Come out," she said, "C.P.D, Coolsville Police Department; I won't ask again."

"Wrong way, sweetheart." The voice had come from just behind her this time. Oliver jerked around to look, eyes narrowed to slits, but no one was standing there either. Slowly he pulled out his own gun as well. He could worry about what was going on with his voice later; they needed to take this guy down.

All the normal sounds of traffic and the like began to fade as well, until all Clyde or Oliver could hear was each other moving around.

Clyde turned sharply, bringing up an arm to strike at the man --because it was a man, goddamnit -- all but whispering in her ear. She didn't stumble when there was nothing there, but a cold sweat broke over the back of her neck, and the hair on the back of her arms stood at attention. Instead she turned her gaze to the bank -- or, more importantly, the bank doors. Could be a distraction. She'd figure out why she was selectively deaf later.

"Well," Clyde said, her voice as steady as her hands on her gun, "This is unnerving. Oliver, I take it the selective deafness isn't just me? A nod will do."

Oliver nodded with the ghost of a smile. It's not just me, that's a good sign.

"Don't worry about it too much." This time the voice came from near Oliver, who just barely kept himself from jumping. "People usually get spooked when they first meet me, you know. Your reactions are perfectly natural."

Oliver was getting spooked whether he wanted to admit it or not, and that was irritating. What was this guy, the world's best ventriloquist? He looked to Clyde and motioned for her to keep talking to this whack-job. The longer they talked, the more likely he'd make a mistake, and the more likely it'd be that they could find where he was.

She slipped her gun back into her holster, kept her hands loose, her shoulders relaxed and her knees slightly bent -- ready to run or fight if she had to, "So you do this to everyone you meet then? Just...shut off the background white noise? Hell of a trick, that."

Oliver's eyes darted to Nicky. He held his hand up and shook his head vigorously for her to stay away.

"Oh don't be a spoilsport; she can join us." As Nicky approached, she'd find the background noise fading from her hearing as well.

Nicky shook her head at Oliver. She didn't know how to read lips. She staggered back a few steps from where she heard the voice. What the hell? She looked around for the ventriloquist and found nothing but an empty street. "I'm Nicky," She said gruffly as she did whenever she introduced herself. The radiation must have given this guy his powers, but she couldn't really say that out loud. They'd think she was crazy like the last person she'd mentioned it to.

Clyde glanced to Oliver, because, to be completely honest, this talk of freakhood like it was anything more than a label used for sulky teenagers full of self-loathing was starting to annoy her. She didn't know how Mynah was doing it -- though she could guess that he was throwing his voice, had bought some sort of scrambler for their two-wyas -- but it was almost as annoying as humouring him.

"Answer the question, Mynah," she said, looking back towards the bank,"There are innocent people in there. Decent people who don't deserve to get hurt in the crossfire. So are you acting alone, or have you got people in that bank, hurting those people?"

"How do you know that ANYONE'S been hurt? And you're cold, Nicky, nowhere near close." There was a very slight edge to Mynah's voice now. "I'm not here to hurt anyone, necessarily. If everyone cooperates, everyone gets home without so much as a scratch."

Oliver returned Clyde's glance and shrugged helplessly. He had absolutely no idea what was going on. If it weren't for his voice not working, he'd have thought Mynah just had too much time on his hands and had taught himself ventriloquism. One thing he DID know was that this was irritating, and the sooner this was dealt with the better.

He started scanning the area around them at ground level just as Nicky had been scanning the rooftops.

Nicky or Clyde might have seen a movement near the bank's door as a person walked across the threshold.

There was a pause. Oz blinked, seemingly put ill-at-ease by Sheila's sudden appearance. It was either that or the heat in the place had stunned him and started to melt his greymatter into unusable mush. He wet his lips and summoned up an easy smile.

"Evening, miss," he said, "My friend and I are looking for a place to stay tonight." He glanced around, taking note of the run-down appearance, as well as the shady clientele, "And I was wondering; do you charge the rooms by the hour?"

Behind him, Kane hummed a tune to herself -- Don't Fear the Reaper, if anyone bothered to listen in -- and poked around the lobby. She lit upwith a high, pleased noise, when she spotted an ancient candy machine and clip-clopped over to try and coax a gumball from it's depths, despite the stuck mechanism and dusty glass.
