If I ever would do one it has to have a point. It will not be the main part of my story as in such a romance, like incest, is not on my radar or romance. However, I was going to try a story in Ancient Rome where the brother and sister hooked up, but the world did not end happily for them.

I actually enjoy some taboo romances ie threesomes and maybe incest depends on how the characters are related. I think it's great to try something new and if you can make it work then I say go for it :)

My story leads to the MC being with a demon. With her knowledge that her love could just be Stockholm's syndrome, and her emotional state as she contemplates the many faces and situations of love.

"Is love an illness? -Does it depend on how I fell in love?" Melody asked him.

I have done a work with major incest themes, between brother and sister, aunt and nephew, and brother and brother. It was written as a tragedy however as the man in the center of all these relationships (with his blood sister, adopted brother and aunt) is eventually killed by the sister he's slept with at the cajoling of their mother. Still the love between the siblings was genuine at least in the beginning, no matter how horrid it turned out for all involved.

Re:

And if you're looking for feed-back on approaching the subject:

Honestly I would mostly say be careful. The reason why I wrote incest in the context of tragedy was because it inverted all of the genuine love the brother and sister had for each other, it ultimately weakened their relationship to the point where it *could* have such a tragic end. Granted the MMC was a terrible person who used sex to manipulate his naive younger brother and tried to use it to also manipulate his aunt (with even more disastrous consequences).

Incest does not necessarily have to be a vehicle for tragedy but it is a fairly heavy subject to use in a work. "Ada or Ardor" is an incest romance between a half brother and sister (though at the beginning they think they are first cousins) by Vladmir Nabokov. It may be worth checking out if you want more insight into the subject in fiction.

The taboo is actually that they're both men(its not tolerated), they don't know that they're brothers.

Re: Taboo Romance?

I actually have nothing against taboo. The controversy sells me on it.

M/M or F/F is something that I'm used to reading, mostly as side couples, so I see it very natural. This of course, as long as it doesn't abuse of the cliches that commonly haunt this types of settings.

If I were to write one with an actual purpose, it would be a brother/sister pair. Why? Because there are way too many of these that simply rely on tragidy and how it cannot work out. I would do one were the taboo and controversy is there, but it shouldn't end with a suicide or such. If we really are that open minded, our work should show it.

Other topics like transgender or such is not my forte. I have nothing against them, but I've got nothing to bring to the table in their favor. Once I read a bit about them then maybe I can work something out.

Re: Taboo Romance?

As a Devil's advocate, I'd have to say that writing incest isn't like writing M/M or transgender. There is a level of power and a degree of non-consensual elements to incest that aren't built in (not to say they can't happen), otherwise. It's a theme worth addressing, but I think one that needs to be addressed with care. Something like addressing domestic abuse and giving it a happily ever after...you'd have to do that really cautiously.

I don't know about it in "romance" per say, but back when I was in high school a couple of my favorite books by V.C. Andrews had brother/sister in them, and their parents were a niece/uncle (which is alluded to during the series and later there was a book about them). The first book, or what was initially the first book, is called Flowers in the Attic with the second being Petals in the Wind.

I'm going to second Dawn's response.

I read V.C. Andrews Flowers in the Attic as a teen. I thought the subject matter was very tactfully written. The relationship blossomed naturally from two young siblings being protective of each other and knowing they could only rely on each other...to them growing into mature teens who started to feel odd feelings toward one another.

That kind of thing was shocking back then and I think it can be entertaining if it's written tastefully.

Re: Taboo Romance?

In my story, incest was a somewhat relevant side-plot.

My FMC "seduces" her father in attempts to blackmail information out of him. It fails miserably because he totally doesn't have an issue with it. Emotional breakdown ensues.
And later, I play "rape" as a comedy. It's not rape really, no more than the Labor Day episode of 'Married... With Children' was. It's more like she just gets dead tired and he has unnatural stamina. You know, for the lawlz.
But I don't go into detail.

Later she finds out this guy, my MMC, is her cousin, and pretty much has been stalking her since the day they met. But not only that, he's also her half brother. Double whammy! However with him he actually loves her and stalks her to protect her, and because he's desperate for kindness. He's known she was his cousin from the beginning but didn't find out about the half sibling thing until later. That still didn't change how he felt about her. Should be noted he's Asexual, but romantic.

Screw sibling stories (although I do enjoy those) and even cousin stories (although those are fun).
I go for the taboo of all incest taboos... Father/daughter.

It;s over 2 books and it does have a happy ending :)
