So I just realized why my FMC doesn't have any chemistry with the character I originally wanted her to be with: she's more into ladies than she is men! Hello, steamy lesbian romance! it just took me twenty three thousand words to figure out that's what my story is, lol. Has anyone else's characters done that to them?

Well, not quite, but my MMC who I thought was a total homophobic womaniser turns out to be sleeping with about as many men as women... I tried having a conversation with him about this, and he informed me he is apparantly straight, he just happens to have sex with men - but then he's in denial, frankly, so I think he's lying to me because he'd rather be thought of as an alpha male type. As far as I can tell he's actually an aromantic and pansexual by and large, but then he ends up falling in love so that's not quite... gah, how can this be, I made him up and even I can't understand him!

He can still be an alpha male even if he is into guys?

Well, I get that, but HE doesn't. Given the culture he's in it would be considered kind of shameful, besides which he's trying to live up to his dad's expectations of him to be a, you know, manly man who goes hunting and does man things etc. etc.

Believe me, I've tried to explain that one to him. But he's not listening...

Some flavor of demiromantic, maybe?

Ah, maybe... I can't really tell. I have half an inkling that it's not quite that he's aromantic, but more that he's loved FMC pretty much ever since he became sexually aware, but somehow doesn't put love and sex in the same boat so has contentedly gone and slept with lots of other people between then and now... or something. Like I say, I can't really understand it. I don't think he does, either...

One of my supporting characters who was supposed to be straight seems to be more bisexual than I originally intended. But it won't make a huge difference in my story at all.

In another story I've been working on for quite some time (not for Nano), I'm still confused about my MMC's sexual orientation, as I guess he must be at well. At first he was straight, but then it seemed like he was into his best friend, and it's all very confusing. I've taken a break from that story and hopefully when I come back to it it will make a little more sense. Though probably not.

One of my supporting characters was originally supposed to be jealous of my MMC's romance with his best friend because he secretly was in love with said best friend. Now it just turns out he's a jerk and is overprotective of said best friend in a "bros before hos" kinda way.

y u switch sexualities on us authors!?

Lol you all crack me up. Only other writers understand how Characters can misbehave.

How many times have we complained to non-writers about our characters doing/being something they shouldn't, and the non-writer goes, "...why don't you change them, then?"

...

"Uuuuuh. That's really not an option."

"Why not? You're the writer."

...

"Seriously, it just. It doesn't work like that."

My FMC was originally a lesbian. Then, she started to have one-sided feeling for my MMC so I made her bisexual. Now she's back to being a lesbian. :|
I don't think I'll ever be 100% sure what her sexuality is.

Definitely. My MMC was originally supposed to be gay with a confusing timeline before that, where he wasn't quite sure what he was. But then he decided he wanted to be pan and get into a polyamourous relationship with a girl and another guy, and now he thinks that maybe he's ace instead.
This is all very confusing. XD Especially for the other characters.

My two MCs were going to be lesbian and bisexual, and then my (straight female) supporting character went and fell in love with her (female) best friend and they both got promoted to MC status when the only thing that got me writing yesterday was their interaction -.-

I've just realized that one of my secondary characters is gay and the other is bi. And that they are together.
This actually solves a lot of relationship issues with other characters, so I'm quite happy. But how did it take me 40k to find out?

Imagine the awkwardness when my dad reads my book, and during the first 5 pages he turns to me and asks, straight-faced: "Why are they gay?"
Me: "They aren't..."

Yep - everyone whose read even just a little of my book is certain that the two male MCs are in love. When one has a girlfriend. And, what's even more irritating is that the more I read it, the more I see it. Arrgghh.

I'm torn between giving up and making them be together, or keeping them with their respective FEMALE love interests.

'Tis very vexing.

Kind of. My character's sexuality didn't change - I've always seen him as bisexual - but his primarily love interest's gender did. I was never really pissed off about that, more about the fact that I had the ENTIRE subplot planned out with his first love interest (a girl) before the idea that he was actually in love/obsessed with another major character who is a guy. So then that became the major romantic subplot. It's unrequited, though, and my character has a secondary love interest who is a girl and the only person he ever has a long-term relationship with (several years). Weirdly enough, it ended up not being the same girl I had initially planned, although that girl is still a pretty major character.

My MMC's (who's gay) identical twin brother. He started as straight, started veering towards being bi, then as totally openly gay, but then he went back to being straight, and now he's gay again--just super closeted this time o.o His being gay adds more to plot, but I'm pretty sure it's going to change again e.<

When I first met my triad, they all told me they were straight and I thought, "Cool! I haven't had straight main characters in years." But alas! I left the boys alone together too long. I should have known better. I ran back in and tore them apart in time to keep one of them straight, but the other is now bi and will forever have unrequited feelings for the straight one.
