Questions and answers

Ok, so, basically - inspired by a thread in the fantasy forum - it's fairly simple. All you do is:

1. Answer the question the last person asked
2. Ask your own question

Ok, I'll start:

1. n/a
2. What's the best thing about your MMC? And the worst?

Re: Questions and answers

1. The whole getting together process takes about a few weeks but the catalyst is when my MMC's roommate, who they constantly joke cannot pick up social cues, simply tells him that the FMC likes him. MMC is in disbelief because roommate _cannot_ be right but he is and thus starts MMC having to decide how he feels and how he'll get FMC to talk to him again (they had a big fight).

1. I have *so many* couples, at all different stages of relationships (some are just starting out, some have been married for 20+ years), and my novel is set in 1872, and I have one scene where one of my 'old married couples' are getting ready for bed and talking about their children, and I feel like the 'routine' of them getting ready for bed just shows how well they know each other and how well they've supported each other over the years.

I personally know that they do get their HEA, but I leave it ambiguous at the end as to whether or not they escape from the bad guys and survive.

Re: Questions and answers

1) The romance hasn't really started in my one yet, but this little scene is quite sweet, I think.
“Sorry about Imran,” Diarmuid said, flicking his cigarette butt onto the floor. Ysabelle glared at him and he sighed, bent down to pick it up, and deposited it in the bin.
“’Sokay,” she said. “It is my job after all.”
“They do take the piss a bit though,” he told her. “Probably ’cause you don’t ever seem to have any other plans.” He glanced sideways at her, studying her profile in the half moonlight. “Evening plans. Private plans.”
“I... occasionally have plans,” Ysabelle objected.
“With other people?”
“You take me to the pub sometimes.”
“Doesn’t count.”
“I don’t see why not.”
“I mean in the sense of...” Diarmuid waved his hands in a gesture that all at once encompassed something extremely specific and something extremely vague. “Plans. Those kind.”
“Saying it in a funny voice doesn’t mean it makes more sense,” Ysabelle told him.
“Plans that can’t be rescheduled,” he tried again. “Because they involve other people. Or even just one other person. A specific other person.”
Ysabelle paused and turned to face him, frowning. He schooled his expression into a totally innocent one.
“What specific other person?” she asked carefully.
“...Me?” he offered.
“Are you asking me out?” she asked after a moment.
“Yes?”
She stared at him for a long moment and he grinned slightly awkwardly back at her. And then she started laughing and he relaxed somewhat.
“No,” she said finally.
“No?” Diarmuid looked perturbed. “Why not?”
“Because you’d be an awful date.” Ysabelle thumped him playfully on the shoulder and carrying on walking.
1. My MC's boyfriend arrives at his best friend's house, who he hasn't seen in a long time. They get into an argument because the friend is upset that the boyfriend has kept his relationship a secret, and they start yelling at each other but then realize that they're only mad because they really miss each other. And they hug and make up and it's very sweet. They actually have quite a few mini-quarrels that are resolved rather quickly with an uncommon amount of affection for two teenage boys with a completely platonic relationship. It's pretty cute if I may say so myself.

Re: Questions and answers

1. Yes! Big time! And it probably won't get dealt with within this timeline, but I was thinking about my 'villain', whom I love, and how much I love him, and sort of giving him....well not a full-blown romance, but sort of an ambiguous 'connection' to the current FMC's younger sister. Besides the fact that he's hurt her family tremendously, there will be a 30-year age gap between them. They definitely won't be getting married with babies, but they won't stay out of my head!

2. Kissing (and 'up') scenes....love them or hate them?

1. both. I love reading them in other books but writing them is a bit awkward, especially the 'up' scenes. I'm kinda embarrassed and I always worry that they're too over the top or cliche or... anything really. I don't think I can do them well but I always end up writing them anyway and I never think that other people's 'up' scenes are corny or over the top.

Re: Questions and answers

1. Worst? As in worst written or most awkward worst?

If worst written I will say probably the bonding moment between my two mmcs it just doesn't feel as deep as I want it to be. I think it's established they care about each other and have brotherly bond but I would prefer to show their companionship better.

in terms of awkward? Hm, I would say the forced dinner with his parents as one of them kind of went out of their way to make her uncomfortable and she didn't even know why so naturally she was completely confused and felt very out of place the entire meal.

My question:

What is the most intimate (emotional, doesn't have to be sex or anything) moment between your MCs?

A. I haven't written it yet (my romance is quite slow - paced. In fact, there's no way I can fit everything in 50K), but I'd say that the most intimate moment so far happened in one of the flashbacks, when my MMC helps my FMC get over her father's death... or at least it was in my mind. I'm not happy with that scene, so I will definitely revise it.

Q. Do you have an ending to your story, or are you just making it up as you go along (and dread the moment you'll have to wrap things up because the plot is now way out of control... like me :P)?

Re: Questions and answers

I will answer that and say yes.

one common trait would be insecurity and how they both approach it.

Sage doesn't like to look "weak" ergo, he feels less masculine if were to say "I think I might lose you, because I don't feel like your equal"

vs Ari who is "Make me feel bad about myself, I will tear you apart with my vicious words and intellect! I may cry later but you won't see me do it!"

Where as she knows deep down she is better than a lot of people tell her, Sage fails to realizes his own potential this leads to them having a frustrating blow out and Sage pretty much stabs the poor girls heart out emotionally. By the time he tries to apologize it's too late.

Question:

What is the worst thing your bad guys do in the story?

A: Probably by a smidgen my "She kissed him first" scene. Up until this moment, the MMC had been the one putting the moves on my fmc. However, a disappointing realization about someone he had been close to and respecting leads him to spontaneously romance her for an afternoon surprise and it's one of the few times he sees her genuinely emotional and affectionate towards him.

Q: What, if any....is the saddest moment of your novel?

Answer:
The death of my MC's mother figure, Ashley, by far. She took her in after her real mother's death and raised her for fourteen years. They have a really sweet talk beforehand, where my MC asks why she took her in. It's the first time she openly calls her Mom. Ashley's boyfriend of many, many, MANY years is about to propose that night too. She dies standing up to the villain; note that Ashley's main flaw is being cowardly.

A: My favorite character is Thomas. He's so devoted and steadfast. Unfortunately, he doesn't make much of an appearance in my book. However, he is the whole reason there is a book, so the few appearances he does make are vastly important. My favorite scene is right after he just got notice that he's getting drafted into the war. He and his wife are arguing about it, mainly because she's scared to see him go. In the scene, he does everything he can to try to make her feel better, including promising that he'll come back to her. (And he does).

Re: Questions and answers

A: Probably Malcolm, who is the best friend of the main couple. He's extremely bizarre and theatrical and says a lot of really stupid things. I think he's kind of the comedic relief of my novel. At the same time, I was able to give him some issues so he's not just the joke-spurter. He struggles with his overtly feminine nature and this has become a very interesting thing to explore when writing. I love writing my MCs, but Malcolm is so entertaining, he wins.

Re: Questions and answers

A. Well, now that I think about it, it's one of the side couples, Nevaun and Cici. They never get together, but they have mutual love and respect for each other and that's all I'd ever really want in a relationship. Cici is the first person she can trust that's different from her.

Q. If there were different circumstances, would your character's relationship end up differently? Ex: Nevaun is an immortal and Cici isn't. If they were both immortal, they still wouldn't have gotten together, but they'd be best friends and always have each other's back.

So far I think I have only mentioned that around 4 or 5 times in the entire book. Well the bathing, peeing type stuff anyway. A lot of their gatherings center around food. In fact a sub plot involves the MC and MFC exchanging skills, she teaches him the art of cuisine. He teaches her how to play Piano

Is there any in particular character who might come off as more complex than the others in the story?

Ahhh, ninja'd! Sorry about that one...

1. Oh, she doesn't really care for children... which is totally why I'm getting her pregnant if I ever write a sequel. I think she'd warm to children once they were there, but as she was an orphan herself and brought up in a fairly brutal environment she has pretty mixed up feelings about childhood...

Re: Questions and answers

1. My story has some LitFic elements as a lot of it deals with the MC's alienation before the whole romance starts. It's very character driven as opposed to plot driven, which I'm told makes it LitFic - esque. And it may or may not be YA. No idea at the moment.

Re: Questions and answers

1) Well I actually just had this discussion with my husband. I don't think every "HEA" involves a wedding. As such my FMC and MMC will probably not end up married by the end of the story for a host of reasons, the biggest one being that I don't think it's wise to accept or offer a marriage proposal in the short time span they've known each other. They will however end up happily together in the end.

2) If you could change one thing about your story, be it an occurance, a setting, a character, etc, what would it be and why?
