After It's Too Late..

Writing a romance after the 'it's too late' point. So, the happy ending is sort of ruled out for the 'main' couple. Dead, chronic diseases or just migrations to countries far away. The couple is destined to never be together any more and has to move on, or stick with it and run in circles whilst getting older and older.

I'm writing one... my male, main side character (Mark) has been executed like a year before the actual story starts and my whole story is a letter from MC - William, who is imprisoned for treason, sodomy and adultery - writing a whole letter of explications to Mark. So, I can't have them together anymore and William is sort of stuck with his life also coming to an end...

So, any other people writing things that can't end right for the 'main' couple?

My main couple can't be together.
My MMC is the prince of Umbrage
My MFC is the princess of Sterling...the two countries are warring.

Back story..My MFC subdues and captures the MMC because he is the key to uplifting a law that will have her and her young sister taken to the gallows. Of course they mesh and fall in love...though its more fantasy, anyways it just so happens that the secret he holds, he doesn't know, is that he was born in her country and stolen and raised in his country, his mother went on a rampage and it brought on the law.

The MFC knows about his heritage and all she would have to do is let the secret out and save everyone and they could be together, but then he couldn't rule the country he was destined to rule. So instead of telling him who he is and making him choose her or his country, she keeps the secret to herself and attacks her own kingdom, taking the throne and letting them both go their separate ways.

It's sad but I think its classy that she loved him enough not to force him to choose.

I have a sort of love triangle going on that can't end well for anyone. 2 best friends love the same woman, but she has a divine purpose that kind of gets in the way of her love life. She is the handmaiden of a goddess of death, and it's her job to comfort the souls of the dead and help them accept that their life is over so that The Grey Lady (the goddess she serves) can take them to the afterlife. So the woman is part divine. She doesn't age. She can never die of old age, poison, or disease (though she can be killed). Even if she were to fall in love with an elf, assuming she didn't get killed, she would outlive anyone, even if she were to choose one of the best friends.

In fact, I'm really not sure how to tie up that plot. I started a thread about it. I'd appreciate any feedback you guys could give me on the matter:

Re: After It's Too Late..

I am debating it.

There has just been too much emotional damage done by the MC to the FC, even though she was already kind of beat up to start with...he just broke her. Plus the fact she gets killed kind of puts a damper on things....granted I left it open in case I wanted to bring her back (within the fantasy's logic cause I admit...by the death of this character, I'm heart broken. I just want SOMEONE happy XD)

But yeah even with that, still not sure they would even be together. He really does love her, they had a family together and they made a fantastic couple at one point. But I dunno..........too little too late, time doesn't heal all wounds. I'm 98% sure nothing can make her better emotionally. Poor thing.

Maybe they can end as good friends with her being peacefully oblivious to his still very real feelings of affection towards her
